00:00In Argentina, lawyers filed complaints before the justice system against President Javier
00:16Milley for his involvement in the Libra cryptocurrency scam.
00:23In Mexico, authorities registered a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the Oaxaca state.
00:31And in Germany, the 66th Munich Security Conference closed on a sour note for Europeans amid strained
00:36transatlantic relations.
00:43Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios
00:46in Havana, Cuba.
00:48Let's begin with the news.
00:49In Argentina, before the justice system, lawyers confirmed that they delivered criminal complaints
00:55against the nation's president, Javier Milley, accusing him of being part of a cryptocurrency
00:59scam that has become a global scandal.
01:02The economist Claudio Lozano has filed the first formal complaint, although it would
01:06not be the only one against the move in which the ultra-liberal president promoted a cryptocurrency
01:12that then crashed.
01:14Juan Mariano Jonens, president of the Argentinian court, ordered the appointment of a judge
01:19to the case.
01:20The complaints filed before foreign law firms already exceed 100.
01:25This happens as rumors spread regarding the current situation of the head of state, which
01:29is said to have locked himself up at the presidential residency.
01:37A defense for the single national union of the construction and similar industries of
01:41Panama, Suntrax, accused the nation's government of endorsing abuses and violations against
01:46the members of the union, arrested after protesting for their rights.
01:50The 83 workers were provisionally detained after the violent intervention of the police
01:54in a demonstration they held against the bill to reform the social security fund.
01:59The union's defense also denounced the absence of separation of powers and guarantees for
02:03workers and accused the country's president, José Raúl Molino, of directing the whole
02:08operation.
02:09They also denounced the move as a political trial that undermines the rule of law in the
02:13country.
02:14On Sunday, a soldier of the Asian Armed Forces and two officers of the Protected Air Security
02:23Brigade were killed after an attack by members of armed criminal groups in the municipality
02:27of Kenscoff.
02:28During this new attack, houses were set on fire and the national police arrested members
02:33of the armed group.
02:34A spokesman for the police force, Lionel Lazar, reported that law enforcement personnel have
02:40already regained control of the area where the radio antennas are located in the metropolitan
02:44region of the Asian capital.
02:46Armed groups want to gain control of the area in order to take off the air.
02:50Some media outlets are hostile to them and extort money from the owners.
03:05A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was registered early hours of Monday in the state of Oaxaca
03:18in southern Mexico.
03:19The epicenter of the quake was located in Yucitán de Zaragoza and was reported a few
03:24minutes after midnight.
03:26So far, no fatalities, injuries or damage to structures have been reported.
03:30The Mexican seismic alert system explained that the alarm did not go off because the
03:35earth movement had not been intense enough.
03:43And severe storms, including devastating tornadoes, have unleashed devastating flooding across
03:48the southeastern United States, resulting in at least nine fatalities, eight in Kentucky
03:53and one in Georgia.
03:55Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the event as one of the most severe weather incidents
04:01in the past decade, prompting him to declare a state of emergency.
04:04The storms left over 39,000 homes without power across the state, affecting residents'
04:10ability to seek safety and assistance.
04:13All 120 counties in Kentucky reported significant flooding, with some areas receiving between
04:19three to eight inches of rain.
04:22Emergency teams have conducted over 1,000 rescues as they respond to the crisis.
04:27The situation is particularly dire in eastern Kentucky, which is still recovering from devastating
04:31floods in 2022.
04:39We now have a first short break coming up.
04:40Before we invite you to join us on our TikTok at Televisual English, where you'll find news
04:44updates in different forms and formats.
04:50We'll be right back after the break.
04:52Thanks for joining us.
05:22Welcome back.
05:28The Hind Rijab Foundation, a legal arm of the March 30th Movement, has filed a complaint
05:33with International Criminal Court against Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
05:38Her HRF accuses Saar of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with Israel's
05:44military actions in Gaza since October 7th, 2023, alleging that he is complicit with Prime
05:49Minister Netanyahu in the mass displacement, starvation, and persecution of Palestine.
05:54With Saar's planned visit to Brussels on February 18th, the HRF urges Belgium to stop him and
06:03cooperate with the ICC, citing Belgium's obligations as a signatory to the Rome Statute.
06:09The HRF is named after Hind Rijab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces.
06:20And in Lebanon, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Kassem rejected the plan proposed
06:27by the United States regarding the Gaza Strip.
06:30Hezbollah's top leadership strongly condemned the plan to displace Palestinians from the
06:33Gaza Strip to Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, and warned against U.S. President Donald Trump's
06:39dangerous position to end Palestine.
06:41The Secretary-General made clear that this political genocide proposed by Trump in collaboration
06:45with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has no viability with the resilient Palestinian
06:51people.
06:52In this regard, he noted that current events make it clearer than ever that Israel is under
06:58the direction and guidance of the United States and that its role is to achieve Washington's
07:02expansionist goals.
07:08And the Arab League has condemned Israel's delays in withdrawing its forces from Lebanon.
07:13In a statement, Secretary-General Ahmed Abdel Gheit warned that any postponement would be
07:18a deliberate call for a crisis.
07:20He stressed that the withdrawal must be complete and not on the agreed date.
07:26He urged parties guaranteeing the agreement to pressure Israel to fulfill its promise
07:30and leave southern Lebanon on schedule.
07:33Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah on November 27 after suffering losses
07:37and failing to achieve its objectives despite killing over 4,000 people in Lebanon.
07:43The 60-day truce was extended for three weeks until February 18, after the Israeli truce
07:47meets the withdrawal deadline.
07:54The African Union's Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adoe,
07:59warned of a possible break-up of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after the M23 armed
08:04group entered the city of Bukavu.
08:07These statements were made at a press conference on the sidelines of the AU summit in the Ethiopian
08:12capital, Addis Ababa, after columns of M23 fighters allied with Rwandan troops entered
08:17the center of an unrecognized city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday.
08:22With fears that the offensive could ignite a regional war, the international community
08:25has multiplied calls for a de-escalation and ceasefire so far in vain.
08:31It must be noted that the conflict with M23 has lasted more than three years.
08:40We are expressing grave concern – that is what our leaders did on the situation in
08:47eastern DRC – calling for immediate withdrawal of M23 and their supporters from all occupied
08:56towns and cities, including Goma Airport.
09:00We also express concern that this escalation, this new escalation, should not become an
09:09open conflict that would disrupt and impact on humanitarian activities and the already
09:17very weakened social fabric in the region.
09:23Also the 38th Summit of the African Union adopted the Convention to End Violence Against
09:28Women and Girls, becoming the first comprehensive continental instrument of its kind to address
09:33such actions.
09:35The document establishes a comprehensive and legally binding framework for the prevention,
09:39elimination, and effective response to all forms of violence against women and girls
09:43in Africa.
09:44The legal and social victory addresses the root causes and drivers of such violence,
09:49strengthening legal and institutional mechanisms, and promoting culture of respect for human
09:53rights, gender equality, and dignity, ensuring that African Union member states reinforce
09:58a common approach to eliminating such violence.
10:02We have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to join our YouTube channel

10:28Welcome back.
10:43In Germany, the 66th Munich Security Conference ended on a sour note for Europeans.
10:48Forum Chairman Christoph Husgen described it as a nightmare for Europe and closed the conference
10:53in tears.
10:54The presence of the U.S. Vice President James Devance especially upset the Germans.
10:59Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck condemned U.S. support for pro-Nazis
11:05parties and organizations in Germany.
11:07The president of the Munich conference went further and said that the Trump administration
11:11lives on a different planet and assured that after the Devance conference, the forum may
11:16no longer be a transatlantic initiative because there are no longer common values between
11:21Europe and the United States.
11:27On Sunday, February 16, tens of thousands of Berliners demonstrated to a lunch-week
11:32action for democracy, social justice, human rights, and against hatred.
11:37This comes after the U.S. Vice President called for a recognition of the far-right Alternative
11:41for Germany party, whose supporters downplayed the significance of the Holocaust for the
11:46German people.
11:48Voters shared their concern over local polls showing that the far-right Alternative for
11:52Germany party could become the second most voted party in Germany after the February
11:5723 legislative elections.
11:59Police estimated at least 30,000 people to have gathered in Bebelplatz Square in central
12:04Berlin while other sources announced that there were 38,000 participants.
12:11I just think that the Alternative for Germany and Christian Democratic Union parties are
12:20a huge problem right now, and that the right is simply far too big to just stay at home
12:25and do nothing about it.
12:27And I just think that it's right to take to the streets right now, because history must
12:31not be allowed to repeat itself.
12:33That's why I think it's super important to be active.
12:38Yes, Willy Brandt once said that 5% right-wing extremists are part of a democracy, but at
12:45the moment we have almost 20%.
12:47People who don't quite realize what these ultra-right-wingers are actually doing.
12:51I'm not in favor of a firewall.
12:53I'm simply in favor of positive thinking, and our parties should do the same.
12:59The United States will begin direct dialogues with Russia this week without the participation
13:03of Europe or Kiev, in a first formal step to end the Ukrainian conflict.
13:07A delegation of senior U.S. officials will arrive in the Middle East for talks with Russian
13:11envoys on how to end the conflict.
13:13The delegation includes Trump's envoy Steve Whitkoff and National Security Advisor Mike
13:18Walz, who will be joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
13:22The meeting will mark the beginning of Trump's accelerated timeline for an agreement to conduct
13:26negotiations only with Russia, at least for the moment.
13:34Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already announced his decision not to attend
13:39the meeting.
13:40He made it clear that he demands European involvement and does not want to enter into
13:44negotiations before determining what security guarantees the United States and its allies
13:49are prepared to offer to ensure that the ceasefire is not violated.
13:52The Ukrainian President has also stated that he would not accept a negotiated peace between
13:56Russia and the U.S.
14:04And in this context, the British Prime Minister says he is prepared to send troops to Kiev.
14:09The British probe also aims to protect the security of its territory and the whole of
14:13Europe, according to the Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
14:16Decision taken at the White House and accepted by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
14:20seems to have taken not only London by surprise, but also all the leaders of the European bloc.
14:26According to Starmer's latest statement, security has become the great challenge and is emerging
14:30as a crucial topic of the meeting to be held this Monday in the French capital, Paris.
14:51In Cuba, the President of Venezuela's National Assembly presented his book, Río Quemado,
14:56during the Havana International Book Fair.
14:58During the presentation of his literary work, Rodríguez explained that the book is based
15:03on an extensive poem, which is interwoven between each of its chapters, solving a conversation
15:10between an 11-year-old boy and the pain and terror of his father's murder.
15:14In this sense, Rodríguez points out that this work has served to exercise many things
15:19that at some time were difficult to deal with.
15:22During the presentation, the Venezuelan Minister of Communication, Freddy Náñez, was also
15:26present and emphasized that the book fair in Cuba represents the defense of dignity
15:30and a response to all those who try to silence the voice of the people.
15:44Indeed, the Cuban book fair is much more than a book fair.
15:47It is an exercise in dignity, a defense of beauty and a response to the scoundrels and
15:53savages who seek to silence an entire people.
15:56It is a fair that it is a moral choice and for which we in Latin America are grateful.
16:01Today, we at La Sirena Publishing House are celebrating because we have a stand here in Cuba,
16:07thanks to the generosity of the Cuban Book Institute and we hope that this edition
16:11reaches young people and Cuban readers.
16:14But we are proud to also present the second edition of the book, Río Quemado,
16:18by the writer, political poet and psychiatrist, Jorge Rodríguez Gómez.
16:26In a special interview for a news multi-platform telestour,
16:29the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez,
16:31talked about his experience presenting the book in Cuba.
16:43It is always a pleasure to come to this free land, to the land of Fidel,
16:47to the land of Raul and also to one of the most important book fairs in the world,
16:52without a doubt, one of the most important in our continent,
16:55for its persistence, for the strength it presents, for the great variety of titles
17:00and the great numbers of activities that take place at this fair.
17:04So I feel deeply proud and grateful that I have been able to come here
17:09and to present the pages that I have been working on over the years.
17:13Here we have come to present a collection of poems, which is very meaningful to me,
17:18which is a poem dedicated to my father.
17:21Today, the anniversary of his birth, we have presented the book Río Quemado,
17:26which is a long conversation throughout the book between an 11-year-old boy
17:31and the pain and the fear that the murder of his father meant.
17:35And another exhibition entitled The Lost Alphabet opened in Istanbul, Turkey.
17:39The installations are displayed in a former hat factory.
17:42Details from a correspondent in UNICEF.
17:48Since its construction in 1833, the House of Fez hat was a symbol of modernization
17:54and also of migration.
17:56It was here that modern hats were made for the Ottoman army,
17:59whose model and name came from the city of Fez in Morocco.
18:02Restored in 2018 and converted into one of the most important art galleries in the city.
18:07This building is currently hosting an exhibition of the artist Ahmet Güneştekin.
18:14The main theme is memory, remembrance, confrontation with oneself.
18:19This includes migration, destruction, wars.
18:22But above all, the exhibition presents stories, tales, myths,
18:26objects that belong to all the cultures that have existed in the world.
18:30Objects that belong to all the cultures that our geography harbors.
18:37The exhibition is entitled Lost Alphabet.
18:40Several objects present letters in chaos.
18:43An invitation to visitors to remember and rearrange them.
18:48Displacing people from their places is like breaking a tree from its place.
18:52The trunk can be removed, but its roots remain in the ground.
18:55Sooner or later, they are reborn.
18:57Cultures and languages are exactly like that.
18:59It is impossible to remove them.
19:04Güneştekin's work of the last six years is exhibited in an area of almost 10,000 square meters.
19:10The works are paintings, installations, objects.
19:14Many invite to a journey through time and mythology.
19:19Here the mythological figure of the Medusa is depicted.
19:22Here its eyes and tail are shown.
19:24And here we see the effects caused by its hair.
19:27And this is what we were discussing just now.
19:33Many painted, decorated and oversized doors catch the eye.
19:37Güneştekin explains that traveling through the country,
19:40he realized that every door told a different story behind it.
19:46Here we tell the story of Lilith, according to mythology the first wife of Adam,
19:50who demanded equality and was cast out.
19:54We tell her story of a rebellious but ignored woman as a source of inspiration.
20:03Other installations tell of current journeys' migration,
20:06where visitors to the exhibition rediscover their own history.
20:12Here I see that a chest has been used, just like the one my grandmother had.
20:16People used to travel and emigrate using them as trunks.
20:20Here I see another trunk made of camel skin, very typical of the Middle East.
20:25I see trunks of all geographies here.
20:31The works are well received and the exhibition is thought-provoking, save visitors.
20:38I've been here for an hour at the exhibition, which I enjoyed very much.
20:42It's an exhibition that encourages a lot of thinking. I liked it very much.
20:47The exhibition of the Lost Alphabet will be open to the public until July 20th
20:53in the Old Hat Factory, next to the Golden Horn.
21:01At least we have come to the end of this news brief.
