00:00Data from Northumberland County Council shows that just a third of adults in the county
00:04are at a healthy weight. The figure was revealed at a meeting of the county's Health and
00:08Wellbeing Board. Factors such as low income and social deprivation were said to be key
00:12drivers of obesity in the county. While the majority of children and young people in the
00:17county are at a healthy weight, children from deprived backgrounds were twice as likely
00:21to be overweight than those who were less deprived. Across the county, 26.8% of the
00:27most deprived children in Year 6 were classed as obese, compared to just 15% of the least
00:32deprived. Last year, the Council and Northumbria Healthcare Trust launched the Healthy Weight
00:37Alliance in a bid to significantly cut obesity in the county over the following decade. Senior
00:42Public Health Manager David Turnbull said,
00:44Children in the most deprived households are almost twice as likely to be overweight. That
00:49simply is not fair. Mr Turnbull has said some of their ways to tackle this will include
00:53more consistent messaging and restricting the number of new takeaways through planning.
