00:00PTV Sports is back with Rafael Andrew, the Tarap National Team member for handball.
00:09Good morning.
00:10Good morning and congratulations on your Gintong Medal.
00:13It's such a historic win for Philippine handball.
00:16Yes, congratulations.
00:17But partner, we saw that he has an injury.
00:20Yes, earlier we spotted it.
00:24R.A., please tell us how you got that injury.
00:29I got injured in the first game of the beach tournament against Singapore.
00:33So, it was actually last 15 seconds when I stole the ball,
00:37and then the Singaporean defeated me and I got dislocated.
00:40So, I thought it was nothing because my bone was already like that.
00:43So, I thought it was nothing because I'm not an artist in pain.
00:46And then, after the game, when the whistle was over,
00:50I saw that my bone was already like that and we just pulled it.
00:53Yes, you were the only one who came back.
00:54No, my teammate, Kuya JM, came back that night.
00:57And then, he just had a splint and then it was over.
01:03That's so cool, partner.
01:04Maybe since they were on a high, their adrenaline in the game,
01:08he didn't notice that he was already injured.
01:10But you know, I said earlier that this is a historic win for the Philippine handball.
01:15But during the finals game, Vietnam was leading.
01:19So, what was the turning point of the game that you got?
01:23You reversed the story of the finals.
01:26Actually, that possession was blocked by our keeper, Kenneth Sandaga.
01:31And then, our head coach, Coach Jamel Pangandaman,
01:35he created the play for our specialist, Ryan.
01:39Unfortunately, Ryan wasn't able to do the play because the situation changed once he entered the court.
01:45So, I was the one who was open.
01:48And thankfully, my teammate, Ryan, trusted me.
01:52And then, I told him to pass to the back.
01:54When he passed, I had an open lane.
01:56And then, I took the shot.
01:57And thankfully, it went in.
02:00Partner, what R.A. was describing earlier, it was a sports movie moment.
02:04Yes.
02:07You can slow it down.
02:09So, when you're in that kind of situation, since it's highly dramatized in our media,
02:15when you're in that situation, what's running through your mind?
02:19Is it natural that this is what I'm going to do?
02:23Or does it sync in with how big of a moment is in front of you right this very moment?
02:35Because that moment was only the last three seconds.
02:38And then, they were so high.
02:40And you only have three steps.
02:41Because when it's four steps, it's like traveling.
02:44So, I didn't know.
02:46I just thought that what happened was what happened.
02:48Once I got the ball, I wasn't able to catch it because I didn't catch it.
02:53So, I just passed it.
02:54And then, when I got the shot, I just clung to it.
02:57I was like, whatever.
02:58It went in.
02:59When I turned around, everyone was shouting.
03:00So, I was like, okay, I'll shout too.
03:03Partner, you told me earlier, the first time I overcame the handball,
03:09this is a totally different line-up.
03:12And what I know is that A.R. used to be a swimmer in the University of the Philippines.
03:17So, why did you go to the world of handball?
03:21At that time, after three years in UAAP, I had to have all my units.
03:29So, I focused on my acads.
03:32And then, right after that semester, it was so heavy.
03:35I was 21, 24 units at that time.
03:38I met one of my professors back then, H.K., Sir Albert Dimarokot.
03:44He invited me to try handball.
03:46And then, he introduced me to the head coach, Coach Joanna Frankel.
03:51And then, I was tried in the beach handball training.
03:55What did you like?
03:56Why did you ultimately decide to switch sports?
04:02I feel like I'm not yet done being an athlete in swimming.
04:08So, I finished after three years, third year college.
04:11And then, I feel like I'm not yet content that I'm done being an athlete.
04:16And then, my opportunity to become an athlete again.
04:19And then, it became my passion.
04:23The community of the sport is so nice.
04:25The people are so kind.
04:26And then, they became my family.
04:29You've been a coach for a long time, ever since Coach Joanna Frankel.
04:32Yes, Coach Joanna Frankel.
04:33And then, you know, swimming is a totally different sport.
04:37The demand of swimming is different.
04:39But, what are the elements of being a swimmer that contributed or helped in handball?
04:45I feel like it's the discipline.
04:49Because, swimming, I consider it as an individual sport.
04:53And then, I have to transition to a team sport.
04:56So, I have to know how to get along with others.
04:58Those are the things that I learned from swimming.
05:02And then, I don't get late.
05:06About that, RA, you mentioned that you transitioned from individual to team sports.
05:12Yes.
05:13As someone who played the highest level in both categories,
05:19what are the biggest differences?
05:21And, in your opinion, where did you try the most?
05:25Well, I've been swimming for a long time, since I was a kid.
05:28But, I was more attracted to this sport.
05:33Because, you're not only competing for yourself.
05:37You can't just relax.
05:40Because, if you relax, the whole team will lose.
05:42So, this is what I feel like I'm striving for and will excel in the next few years.
05:48Because, it's a collaborative effort in a team sport.
05:52So, you have a responsibility to your teammates and coaches.
05:56Yes.
05:57Your partner, AR, has a very intensive experience in terms of training abroad.
06:04And, this is one of your latest travels to Korea.
06:08But, I'm just curious.
06:09What is the philosophy or the method of training of international athletes
06:15that you want to adopt here in the Philippines?
06:21Of course, here in the Philippines, handball was introduced in 2012.
06:28And then, it started in 2014.
06:30I don't know the history.
06:32But, handball is not well-known here in the Philippines.
06:36And, when we train or compete abroad,
06:39the learnings of coaches and athletes are more advanced.
06:42So, that's the experience we're getting here.
06:46That we can use in training and teach our teammates.
06:50And, it's not included in the international training or tournament.
06:54You already said that the sport of handball,
06:58like some of the sports that we try,
07:02is not really noticed.
07:05So, in your opinion, what's the best way to follow the handball community?
07:12Or, to promote it more?
07:14Coach Zana started programs before.
07:19But, it was stopped because of the pandemic.
07:21And then, now that we're back,
07:24actually, prior to our departure to Thailand,
07:27he did a program for the Philippine Handball Federation
07:32in partnership with the College of Human Kinetics.
07:35So, in UP, there will also be handball programs.
07:39Though, they already started programs before
07:42in different places like Zambales.
07:45And then, we also have festivals, yearly festivals.
07:49It's done in Ateneo.
07:51So, there are handballs in Antipolo,
07:54in Ateneo, in San Agustin, Makati, and so on and so forth.
07:57So, there's still a bit of work to do.
08:00We're still going to work on all the programs around the zone.
08:05And then, Vismin, if possible.
08:07And, to also help a bit with the partner brands
08:10to promote our sport.
08:13For our viewers who don't know,
08:15what is handball?
08:17And, what's the difference between indoor and outdoor?
08:20And, what's harder to play?
08:22For me, personally,
08:24indoor handball is really harder
08:27because it has more physicality.
08:29As in, you can tackle, you can hold here.
08:32In handball, it's almost a non-contact sport.
08:35If you get close, it's either a penalty or a charging foul.
08:38And, in the game of indoor,
08:40it lasts for one hour.
08:42So, it's 30 minutes per half.
08:44And then, in beach handball,
08:46it's only 20 minutes, 10 minutes per half.
08:48And then, in beach handball,
08:50there are two points.
08:52In indoor handball, there are no two points.
08:54All are one point.
08:56So, for me, it's easier to play beach handball.
08:59But, it's more interesting to play indoor handball.
09:02Yes, because it's more physically intensive.
09:05I thought beach handball is more difficult
09:09because I tried it even in volleyball.
09:12When you hit the sand, it's hard.
09:14The feeling is heavy.
09:16But, beach handball is easier.
09:18But, at the same time,
09:20if there are contacts because you're in the sand,
09:23is that a factor?
09:25If you fall or something,
09:27at least, the sand will fall on you.
09:29Yes, sir.
09:30So, if there's an inflight or alley-oop,
09:32it's okay to do any tricks
09:34because it's easier.
09:36You're more compact in landing.
09:38But, our national team won
09:42in their competition against Vietnam.
09:45But, in SEA Games,
09:47are we going to compete?
09:49What preparations are we doing?
09:52Let me just add.
09:532019 Manila SEA Games,
09:55handball bronze.
09:572021 Vietnam SEA Games,
09:59silver.
10:00Is this the time?
10:01Yes, it is.
10:022025 Thailand SEA Games,
10:04is this the time?
10:06I hope so.
10:07We'll do our best.
10:09Now, we'll focus on training and recovery
10:12because from our experience in Thailand,
10:16we played two sports in 13 days
10:19with one day of rest only.
10:21So, our teammates' bodies got tired.
10:26A little recovery.
10:28Actually, we have a training later.
10:30So, we'll slowly balance.
10:32We'll follow all the coaches' plans
10:34up to SEA Games
10:36because I believe we can do it.
10:38We didn't lose too much
10:41in indoor handball in Thailand.
10:43Just a little.
10:44With short preparation,
10:45we can compete with podium finishers.
10:48We have ample time to prepare for SEA Games
10:50and I'm pretty confident
10:52that we can do it.
10:53The good thing about this partner
10:55is that they fought.
10:56Somehow, they know the line-up
10:58of their national team.
10:59Did you learn from them?
11:01I'm sure they're coaches.
11:03They looked at each other.
11:05Yes.
11:06They saw it.
11:07But on our end,
11:08in the Philippine team,
11:09there are teammates,
11:11there are players
11:12who can play in the beach
11:13or in the indoor.
11:14Some can play both.
11:16So, that will be a challenge
11:18for the coaches
11:19on how to balance
11:20the players in the pool
11:22of indoor handball.
11:24In structure.
11:25Yes.
11:26Somehow, did you have a meeting
11:27with your coaches
11:28regarding what will be added
11:31to your trainings this coming year?
11:34Not yet.
11:35We just got back.
11:36We rested first.
11:38And then,
11:39our first training is later.
11:40So, maybe later.
11:41Maybe later.
11:42Actually,
11:43we have a courtesy call
11:44with PSE Chairman,
11:45Mr. Richard Bachman,
11:47and Sir Gaston.
11:49We will discuss there.
11:50Maybe, they will plan
11:52future plans for handball
11:53up to SEA Games.
11:56R.A. said earlier
11:57that he believes that
11:58the Philippines team
11:59will be able to win
12:00the gold this time around.
12:01So, my question is,
12:03what's different this time around
12:06compared to our last campaigns
12:08that were successful
12:09but were a bit off
12:11of the shiniest medal?
12:13Yes.
12:15The difference will be
12:17that there are more players now.
12:19And as I mentioned earlier,
12:21it's more painful to play this.
12:23So, we really need
12:25enough resources
12:26that we can get
12:27from other help from PSE
12:29and all the people
12:30who want to help
12:31in our preparation.
12:32Because this is not going to be easy,
12:34but it's going to be worth it
12:35if we win.
12:37SEA Games is still a bit long, right?
12:39Yes, ma'am.
12:40Do you have upcoming
12:42international trainings
12:44or international
12:45and both international
12:46and local tournaments?
12:48Right now,
12:49we don't have
12:51any idea
12:52if we have any training camps.
12:54But we are preparing
12:55for the Asian Championships
12:56this May.
12:57May 1 to 10
12:58in Muscat, Oman.
13:00So, that's what we are preparing for.
13:02We are preparing for that now.
13:04And after that,
13:05we don't have any plans
13:07if we have a training camp abroad
13:09or if we have competitions.
13:11But,
13:12we believe in the program
13:14of Handball
13:15that will help us
13:17for SEA Games.
13:19So, after this historic win,
13:21has the team's expectations changed?
13:24Of course,
13:25it's a higher level
13:26that you know
13:27you can achieve.
13:28Yes, ma'am.
13:29Is it like
13:30new goals?
13:32Is the pressure
13:33higher now in our team?
13:35I feel
13:36it's the same.
13:37But,
13:38we need to be more disciplined
13:40and more organized.
13:42Everyone should be focused
13:44up to SEA Games
13:45because
13:47we are being watched
13:49by Southeast Asian countries
13:51in Handball,
13:52indoor Handball,
13:53that we are the underdogs.
13:54It's like,
13:55they are just new.
13:56So,
13:57it's better
13:58if we can surprise them
13:59in SEA Games
14:00that
14:01we can really beat them.
14:04The line-up of Handball
14:06is also new,
14:07right?
14:08Yes, ma'am.
14:09There are new players
14:10in Handball.
14:11And I think
14:12with this gold medal finish,
14:13definitely,
14:14the chemistry became better.
14:15Yes, ma'am.
14:16The chemistry
14:17of their roster.
14:18Yes, ma'am.
14:19Do you think
14:20your upcoming competition
14:21will be heavier?
14:22And will you have more
14:23opponents here?
14:25For the
14:26Beach Handball?
14:27In Beach Handball,
14:28we have a lot of opponents.
14:29Eleven countries
14:30are our opponents.
14:33In indoor,
14:34I don't know,
14:35maybe five or six.
14:36Maybe more
14:37in Southeast Asia.
14:39But,
14:40I'm more confident
14:41that our team
14:42is happier
14:43and more bonded.
14:44So,
14:45there are new athletes
14:46from
14:47other national teams,
14:49but also national athletes.
14:50So,
14:51it's really good
14:52because we learn
14:53from each other
14:54about their experience
14:55in their sport
14:56and in our sport.
14:57And then,
14:58our teammates
14:59are in a better condition
15:00now.
15:01They're more focused.
15:02They really want
15:03to win
15:04for this SEA Games
15:05because
15:06we started
15:07from bronze,
15:08silver.
15:09So,
15:10maybe this is
15:11our time for this.
15:12That's what
15:13we pray for.
15:14Yes.
15:15We pray for that.
15:16Little by little.
15:17There's a pattern.
15:18There's a trend.
15:19But,
15:20at this point,
15:21RA,
15:22this is your chance
15:23to send out
15:24your message
15:25if you have something
15:26to say
15:27and thank you.
15:28Or,
15:29if you have a message
15:30to send,
15:31how's the time?
15:32First of all,
15:33thank you again
15:34to the
15:35Philippine Sports Commission,
15:36Philippine Olympic Committee,
15:37and to all the
15:38partner brands
15:39of our team
15:40who trusted
15:41and supported us.
15:42To all the coaches,
15:43especially Coach Janna,
15:44Frank Kelly,
15:45and to all my teammates,
15:46thank you so much.
15:48And,
15:49I hope you continue
15:50to support us
15:51until SEA Games 2025.
15:53That's beautiful.
15:54Thank you so much, RA.
15:56And we hope to see you soon.
15:59And good luck.
