00:00Retail sales weathered a stormy January according to data from the British Retail Consortium.
00:06UK total retail sales increased by 2.6% year on year in January. This is in stark contrast
00:14to the so-called death of the high street which has been a hot topic of debate. We have been on
00:20the streets of Liverpool to find out what long-lost shops you miss most from the high street.
00:26I miss Woolies the most. It's where I went as a kid to get my box sets, my games, the pick and
00:32mixes. It just had everything in it and if I think of one shop that I wish would come back it'd be
00:36that just because everything at once. I was a charmed boy. I loved shop charmed and I used to
00:41get the box sets there every time they came out because it was always the cheapest. Woolies of
00:46course. That's going back a few decades. C&A. I remember C&A. Owen Owens, Marks and Spencer's
00:54in the Strand. That's gone now. Blacklars. I remember going to Blacklars with my mum
01:01to see Santa. That was a long time ago. My mother told me decades ago that she took me and my sister
01:08to Blacklars Grotto and I did enjoy seeing the Father Christmas by the pier head at the museum.
01:18Liverpool is once again ahead of the curve as the beginning of the year saw monthly retail sales
01:23of 58.2 million pounds which is a year-on-year increase of 3.7%. This is despite a decrease of
01:318.2% in customer numbers. Shops are disappearing fast and getting being taken over. That's life
01:39isn't it? I think there's a place for everything. It's just how people go about it. I think the way
01:42things are now people seem to come out more often if they feel like they need to try on clothes
01:47or if there's an event going on that then they bounce off. I think for me working in the city
01:52centre that's when I see more people out and about is when they go to an event and then
01:58they do the shopping whilst they're around it.
