Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United's 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest at St James' Park in the Premier League. Goals from Jacob Murphy, Lewis Miley and an Alexander Isak brace gave the Magpies a 4-1 lead - but a subdued second-half performance almost saw them throw the win away.

00:00So, Newcastle United are back to winning ways here at St James' Park with a 4-3 win over
00:06Nottingham Forest. Now, the 4-3 makes it suggest it was a close match. It was anything but.
00:11I mean, it was close at the end. Newcastle, you know, almost conspired to throw away at
00:14the end. But, yeah, it was a chaotic afternoon at St James' Park, particularly our first
00:1945 minutes. It was absolutely mental, everything happening. Yeah, Newcastle back in part, back
00:24to their very best. You know, they scored three goals, sorry, four goals in 14 minutes,
00:28which was brilliant. And, you know, I've always said that that's when they're at their
00:32best at Medihal and they're ruthless when they're taking their chances and really getting
00:35into opponents, you know, that when they're in their faces, not bothered about who they
00:39are. And I think I was just pointing out last week that they looked at Man City and they
00:42were a little bit worried they didn't impose their game on them. But this week they were
00:44brilliant. They were right in their face, right in Nottingham Forest's face and got
00:49the win. Although, of course, as I said, you know, they almost threw it away at the end.
00:52But it was Forest who took the lead. It was a soft goal conceived. The ball was given
00:58away by Jacob Murphy down here, just behind me, actually. Callum Hudson-Odoi then, you
01:03know, took it inside, struck near post. Nick Pope was, I think, was probably expecting
01:08a sort of a curler. It didn't happen. He caught near post. Nick Pope stranded. 1-0 Forest
01:13and Newcastle started well as well. That was after six minutes. And it was a shame because
01:17they had really, you know, they'd started well. They had most of the ball, you know,
01:20and didn't allow them, their opponents to get settled. It was a positive start. And
01:26particularly against a team like Forest who are very good defensively, you do worry that
01:29if they can't get the goal back or if they struggle to, you know, break them down, then
01:34they might struggle to get back in the game. But they were able to do that. And I said
01:38four goals in a mad 14 minutes. Lewis Hall was a standout player. I'll be mentioning
01:44his name a lot over the next few minutes as I talk about the goals. But he was brilliant
01:47in attack. Yeah, so Miley gets him back level. It was a long way. It started with a free
01:54kick, actually. It was Lewis Hall, long free kick to Bruno around the back of it like he
01:58did against Forest, if you remember, last year at the city ground. His header sort of,
02:02he missed his header, but they managed to recycle the ball. Hall gets it back in on
02:06the left. He finds Miley in the box. Miley takes a brilliant touch to be fair. Sets himself
02:10up and lovely left footed finish. It was a brilliant finish from Lewis Miley for his
02:14second Premier League goal, you know, second goal of the season. Of course, scored against
02:17Bromley at the Gallagher end as well. So he loves a goal at the Gallagher end. And yeah,
02:21Miley Gasol go 1-1. And then minutes later, they're ahead, this time through Jacob Murphy.
02:27Now, again, Lewis Hall goes down the left. To be fair, some brilliant play from Isaac
02:34and Joe Willock puts Lewis Hall in. I think he's trying to find Willock up with a pass,
02:40but that gets blocked. It goes over the Matzels and falls into the path of Jacob Murphy, who
02:45does really well not to handball it in. He's sort of fallen. It comes off his chest. He
02:48bundles it in. It's not a pretty finish, but, you know, he does well not to handball
02:51it and goes in. And yeah, as I said, that's a 2-1 up. Two goals in two minutes. They were
02:56then deservingly ahead. I think they absolutely should have been ahead in that bit. They would
02:59have been disappointed at score early on, but they were full value for their 2-1 lead.
03:04That became 3-1 not long after. Lewis Hall with a cross. I told you I'd say something
03:08often. Lewis Hall with a cross, which was blocked by the hand of Ola Aina. Now he's
03:12sort of turning, but it hits him sort of on the back there. It does hit him there. I think
03:15it's a penalty. As soon as you see a replay, you think that's going to be given. And as
03:19much as Jared Gillett didn't give it initially, he did go over the monitor. A couple of looks
03:23up there and give a penalty. And it's not a surprise to see him give a penalty. I think
03:25it was one. Lewis Hall seemed convinced. It was his cross. Anthony Gordon right next to
03:30Hall thought the same as well. So Gillett agreed with it. Alexander Izak steps up and
03:38probably hits one of the worst penalties. He's missed a few penalties for Newcastle,
03:41but that was one of the worst ones he's hit. He hits it straight down the middle. And Matzels
03:46I think he starts low, thinking Izak's going to put it in the corner. And then as he realises
03:50he is and tries to get back up, but by then he just can't get the ball out. It was a really
03:53weird penalty. Matzels wasn't looking back on that too much. But you know, it doesn't
03:58matter how it goes in. It goes in. Izak wheels away in celebration, 3-1. And that becomes
04:034-1. Again, minutes later, Newcastle did really well. Two little bursts to score, two quick
04:07goals. This time Izak gets played through and he doesn't miss. He doesn't miss. And
04:14it does take a deflection, but that's a lucky get. That's what happens when you're a top
04:17striker. And 4-1 Newcastle after 30 odd minutes. It was a really, really crazy few minutes.
04:22Certainly that 14 minutes was really crazy. It was certainly a crazy first half. Newcastle
04:26will look back on with great fondness at that period. They can hang their hats on that game
04:31and say, actually, this we were really good. And then towards the end of the first half,
04:34they still pressed for a remarkable fifth goal, but they couldn't get it. And then came
04:39out the second half and you imagine that the pace was going to drop. You'd think that Newcastle
04:42with that game against Liverpool on Wednesday and obviously Brighton next week, you'd think
04:46that they've got every right to drop off and maybe just because it was full throttle in that first
04:51half. And they did drop in the second period, but that allowed Forrest in and they couldn't,
04:55they shouldn't have done that because we know how good and how clinical someone like Chris Wood can
05:00be if he gets a chance, especially from all the tapes. There's a set piece, you know, a corner to
05:05go in and then it's 4-2 and that's exactly what happened with Milankovic. A corner went in,
05:08back post. It was a lovely improvised finish, to be fair, from him. Poor marking from Newcastle.
05:13And it was at that point, it had been coming. Forrest had actually observed it and he'd think,
05:16right, Newcastle now need to sort of just control the game because they weren't controlling the
05:20game. They weren't in control of the game. They might have took the pace down, but to bring the
05:24pace down, you have to be in control of the game and they weren't. You know, they took the pace
05:27down, but they weren't in control. So they did manage to, you know, miss a little bit of control
05:33back. I think Sandro Tonali played a part in that. He came on along with Harvey Barnes.
05:39But as the game went on, you just felt they needed that goal. They didn't get it.
05:43And then right at the end, Ryan Yates scores from another corner. Just before added time,
05:47that was literally the last kick of the 90. And then as they're celebrating, the three minutes
05:52get signalled by the fourth official. And you know Spiro Santo and his coaching staff were not
05:55happy with that three minutes. They thought it should have been longer. But Newcastle eventually
05:59held on. It was Callum Wilson spurned a good chance later on to make it 5-3. But yeah,
06:02it was one that Newcastle conspired to throw away and luckily they didn't.
06:06And yeah, they'll be happy with the win, of course they will. You know, it's a win.
06:08At the end of the day, they scored four goals. They've stopped the rot here. They've stopped the
06:12rot in the Premier League a little bit. Big match at Anfield and that'll be a real test of their
06:17credentials, of course, before the Carabao Cup final and then obviously Brighton in the FA Cup
06:20next week. They're two really big games. But yeah, right now, it's a win. It's three points,
06:26that's all that needs to know. And it was good for, you know, 45 minutes, as I said, it wasn't
06:30brilliant. The second half, second half was actually probably one of their worst performances.
06:34You know, they got beat 2-0 in that second half and probably deservedly so.
06:38But yeah, yes, Al-Rumayyan was watching on. He was here, obviously, big stadium and training
06:44ground talks and all that. So he'll have been happy with what he saw in terms of the win,
06:49again, performance-wise, probably not. Eddie Halby speaking to the media, I'm sure he'll be
06:52sort of echoing similar sentiments that performance-wise wasn't good enough in the second
06:56half, but they got the win and that's all that matters, really, on a day like this. And especially
07:01coming into the game, because it was a big win against Nottingham Forest. They're now just three
07:04points behind their opponents in the table, you know, with Chelsea losing yesterday. I don't know
07:09if you want to say, that Bournemouth losing yesterday, you know, there was wins that they
07:14could take advantage of. If they won today, they would take advantage of them, defeat them. They
07:19have done that, which is positive. So yeah, they head to Anfield with confidence, especially from
07:24that first 45, but yeah, they'll have to work on that second 45 minutes because it wasn't good
07:29enough. It just wasn't good enough. But ultimately, I can say it wasn't good enough and it
07:32doesn't really matter because Newcastle still got three points here against Nottingham Forest.
07:37And yeah, they go back up to fifth place in the Premier League table and
07:40all things are looking a little bit rosier here on Townside.
