BMitch and JP discuss Commanders coach Martin Mayhew deciding to retire before the next NFL league year begins.
Transcript
00:00I'm talking about Martin Mayhew
00:06from Washington and I'm that's
00:09a dude you played with. Um won
00:11a Super Bowl with ride bikes
00:14with now. Yeah. Um were you
00:15surprised by that? Like, just
00:17kind of curious your reaction
00:18to the Mayhew. I want a little
00:20shot, you know, and I'm don't
00:23know. It was just he's decided
00:24to do it or anything else but
00:27it's been a long time. You
00:29know, I cover it now. I've been
00:31covering it now since while I
00:33was playing and then after I
00:34retired but he's been like when
00:38he stopped playing in no time,
00:40he was in the front office and
00:43he's been in a general manager
00:44mode and that that that you
00:46know, being a um a scout and
00:49all that type of stuff. That
00:51that's that's a lot of work,
00:52man. That's a lot of hours.
00:54Yeah. And so, you think about
00:56how long he's been in the
00:57league and he's been working
00:59probably have over 3040 years.
01:02He was drafted in eighty-nine
01:05played. I think nine seasons.
01:08Then, he went to law school.
01:10Yeah. At one point which is
01:12pretty damn impressive on its
01:13own. Um and then, yeah, I mean
01:17they only list uh maybe I can
01:18find it. If we're going to
01:20trust Wikipedia, Wikipedia
01:21might be a better reference to
01:22the law school in the off
01:23season. Think about that. Dude,
01:25man. Um and I I want to say so
01:27I don't know if you're going to
01:28agree with this B. Um alright.
01:30So, in ninety-nine, he got an
01:33internship in the front office
01:34with the skins. Then, he gets
01:36hired in Detroit, starts
01:37working on the football ops
01:39side, works his way up. I I
01:41mean, it's pretty crazy to to
01:43think what that level of
01:45accomplishments are. Um I I
01:49want to clarify one thing
01:51though. I I had a bunch of
01:52these and I know you tell me to
01:54and perhaps I should have but
01:55I I enough people said this
01:56that I that I I want to make
01:58something clear. Um is it
02:01possible that Mayhew's contract
02:04expired and he decided to
02:07retire? Yes, that's entirely
02:08possible but when Adam Peters
02:10yesterday spoke fairly
02:12emotionally about what Martin
02:14means to him and remember,
02:16Mayhew was with them out in
02:18San Fran and when when Peters
02:20talks about what Mayhew did for
02:21him at UCLA, like he's not
02:23making that up. Yeah. And I I
02:25know how close Mayhew and Lance
02:27Newmark are like people want to
02:31make these giant assumptions
02:33that Peters was just being
02:35polite and sometimes like these
02:37are real humans with real
02:38emotions and that was a real
02:40conversation yesterday. When
02:42Adam thanked him for everything
02:43he's done and said that he's a
02:45legend for the franchise and
02:46for the league. The fact that
02:48he's telling the truth. He
02:49could have, he could have
02:50gone somewhere else. Is that
02:51what he wanted to do? Right.
02:52Didn't have to retire but if he
02:53decided to retire, it may be
02:55what he wanted to do. A lot of
02:57people can't look at that
02:58sometimes. You know, it's 32
03:00other teams out there and they
03:02always looking for extra help
03:03to do stuff. So. Yeah, man. I
03:06I think I don't know. Like
03:09every once in a while, put down
03:11your extremely cynical, jaded
03:13guard. But you gotta realize
03:15you're dealing with social
03:16media, dog. Yeah, I I just.
03:1899% idiots. I don't think I
03:21don't think it's that much but
03:22I think it is. The the the
03:25amount of people that
03:26responded to me, oh AP just
03:29fired him. He was just being
03:30polite. Like, you're wrong.
03:32You're incorrect. Um AP has a
03:35serious like appreciation of
03:38this dude as a person and uh I
03:41just I wanna do at least what
03:44we could clarify that.
