Join us for an evening of rarely performed Nino Rota music: Duo Fabulae returns to the studio with an all-Nino Rota programme for viola and piano. Nino Rota is mainly known for the vast number of film scores he wrote. The soundtracks of The Godfather, Romeo and Juliet, La Strada and most of Fellini’s other films are world famous. Yet, the commissioned film music represents only part of his work: he wrote a large quantity of beautiful compositions somewhat overshadowed by his cinematic success. Growing up in a musical family, he found a passion in composition very early on, composing his first opera at the age of 13. Many of his musical ideas and research would later feed his film scores. This concert is in a way, like stepping into his workshop and discovering the real person behind the music. Nino Rota was known to be reserved but also a very open-minded character, and this is very much heard in the dreaminess and melancholy of his music but also the humor and romanticism. Featuring composer Pizzetti as one of the main inspirational figures, Rota’s melodic simplicity and flexibility are key in his compositions. It is therefore the lyricism of his music but also the emotional content that suit so perfectly the viola and the piano in this occasion.
