00:08I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard, Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Morton,
00:12who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds. Gilles Pedro's stoppage time penalty snatched
00:17Brighton victory over Fulham and strengthened their hopes of securing a Champions League
00:20berth. We'll look back at that heart-stopping home win over the Cottagers Plus. We'll bring
00:24you the latest injury news as Albion prepare to visit title-holders Manchester City in
00:28the Premier League this weekend, as well as all the latest from Crawley Town. You
00:32can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk

00:45But we will start the Amex where Gilles Pedro's injury time penalty saw Brighton beat Fulham
00:492-1 on Saturday, as Fabian Hertzeg and his side move up to sixth in the Premier League
00:53with the clock fast past the allocated five minutes of stoppage time. Harrison Reid rashly
00:58caught the Brazilian with referee Sam Barrett immediately pointing to the spot. The 23-year-old
01:03kept his cords beat by Nanno and scored in three consecutive league matches for the first
01:07time, as Brian won a fourth successive top-flight game for the first time in almost 44 years,
01:12as well as registering a first-ever Premier League victory over the Cottagers. And with
01:16all that said, Darren, all those stats there. Not a bad day for you, Brian.
01:21Yeah, no, it was a really good performance against the team. Fulham, Sam and I were at
01:27the match and we were saying afterwards how impressed we were with Fulham. You can see
01:30why they're such a handful for any Premier League team these days. And Marco Silva's
01:36got them firing and they took the lead for a really, really impressive goal, actually.
01:43Down the right-hand side, he flew past Estupiñan. His cross was something else. And then Jiménez,
01:51he sort of peeled away at the back post and his first touch, he took it on his chest,
01:57was just really high-quality stuff. And his finish passed for Bruggen, beat him at the
02:02near post. But I don't think you can blame for Bruggen too much for that one. It was
02:06just a really, really good moment for Fulham and shows why they're doing so well this season.
02:13But Brighton came back and, yeah, great goal for van Gecke. You could see the header, where
02:23we were sat in the press box. You could just see it in straight away as soon as it left
02:27his head and he almost had a bit of draw on his header. It sort of curled into the...
02:33It was a really good header from van Gecke. And I think then Brighton just kept on pushing.
02:39They have that fitness now, which Hersele has spoken about a lot this season, where
02:44they need to improve and keep pushing and keep pushing. And they went to the end. And
02:49as you mentioned, Harrison Reid just caught Jal Pedro. It may be a softish sort of penalty,
02:58but these ones get given these days. Pedro went down, made the most of it, as you'd expect
03:03him to do. And then it was a really tense, tense moment. It was like they said, all the
03:10eyes of the Amex were on Pedro. Can he get that goal? And he kept his cool. And he just
03:16doesn't seem to miss from the spot these days. He's a very good penalty taker. He's done
03:21it in Europa League over the years for Brighton. And he kept his cool, slotted it home. And
03:27as you said, it took them up to six in the Premier League. They dropped down to seventh
03:31after Newcastle's win at West Ham. But that's still well in the mix for the Champions League
03:36qualification.
03:37Absolutely. Post-match, Hersele said Brighton were the only team on the pitch who really
03:42wanted to win and deserve the three points. Would you agree with that assessment, Sam?
03:46I had a quick look at the stats and all signs would seem to suggest that the better team
03:49did win that game.
03:50Yeah, I think Brighton were well worth their winner. But Fulham, as Derek mentioned, were
03:58really good, actually, and probably deserved a point based on their own performance. And
04:01perhaps they were a little bit missing something in attacks, because they only had the one
04:06shot on target, which was the goal. So perhaps they obviously couldn't have expected to win
04:10that game on that basis. But I think they would have been well worth the draw if it
04:15did finish 1-0. Obviously, they were very unlucky with the way in which they lost it.
04:19And even the first goal was some very poor defending. So it's kind of two poor moments
04:23from Fulham as such, where they obviously gave away their goal. Van Geert was obviously
04:27completely unmarked. It's a brilliant header, but he was obviously completely let free to
04:31do that. And then obviously, they gave away a penalty at the last moments of the game.
04:37So two kind of poor moments from a Fulham point of view. But they will be disappointed
04:43that their performance for the rest of the game, which was really compact, and they were
04:46really frustrating Brighton, and limited them to quite a few clear-cut chances. I know Brighton
04:51had the ball in the back of the net a couple of times when they were ruled out for offside.
04:54But that was down to Fulham holding their line really well and playing that kind of
04:58offside trap that obviously caught Brighton out. And as I say, if it had finished 1-0,
05:02I don't think there would have been too many complaints or things. Brighton weren't necessarily
05:06all over them for the whole match. But I think based on the chances that they did have, and
05:11obviously the quality they have going forward, and just the confidence as well, you felt
05:16like a goal was going to come, a moment was going to happen, even after the five minutes
05:19of injury time had been played, Brighton were still on the attack. They're still trying
05:23to go for that goal and to keep this winning run going on. And that's a testament to the
05:26confidence and the form they're in, and just the belief there is in the team at the moment.
05:30So I think it's a really, really great way to win the game in the end. And obviously
05:34the players and the fans were absolutely delighted with it.
05:36Yeah, absolutely. You mentioned that belief, Sam. Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex, defender
05:42Jan-Paul van Geck, who netted his first goal for Brighton in the win over Fulham, said
05:45the Seagulls can beat anybody. And off the back of their recent form, Derham, you wouldn't
05:48bet against him to do that, would you, at the moment?
05:52No, that's right. Yeah, he's very honest in his interview afterwards. And yeah, first
05:58of all, we're really pleased for van Geck, actually. He's been so consistent for Brighton
06:01for the last two seasons now. He's sort of really nailed down that spot. It's always
06:07Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster were probably just about the first pairing. But then he
06:13came in and he's really just been so consistent over two seasons now. It's great to see him
06:19get his first goal and with a really good header as well. And it'd be great to see the
06:24defenders chip in more with goals in the coming matches. But yeah, he's done really well.
06:31He's a Netherlands international now. So great for van Geck. And I agree with him. I think
06:37Brighton can beat any team on it. They've already proved it this season. They've beaten
06:42Manchester City at home. They've drawn with Arsenal twice. They narrowly lost to Liverpool
06:49but played really well up at Anfield. They've beaten Newcastle away twice, which is one
06:54of the hardest places to go in the Premier League. So yeah, I completely agree with van
07:01Geck. They can beat any team on their day. And as long as this front five keep firing
07:07in as they are for Brighton, they've got a lot of options off the bench nowadays. They've
07:13got the likes of Carlos Bolivar playing really well in midfield in front of him as well.
07:18Jack Hinshelwood is back to his best now after his injury. So yeah, I think it's Brighton
07:25a really strong outfit at the moment and their confidence is high as well.
07:29Yeah, absolutely. And they're now just a point behind fifth place Manchester City and a fifth
07:34place finishing the Premier League could be enough to see a team qualify for next season's
07:37Champions League as England currently top UEFA's coefficient table, which guarantees
07:42an additional Champions League spot. No doubt, Sam, it would be a magnificent achievement
07:46if they had been qualified for Europe's Premier Club competition, but a bit of a Sophie's
07:51choice. Do you think fans would prefer Champions League qualification or potentially lifting
07:55the FA Cup at Wembley in May?
07:57That's a very tough question. I think obviously they can, I'd say both. And to be honest,
08:02there's no reason why they can't with the squad they've got and the form they've obviously
08:06got going in all competitions at the moment. But if I had to choose one, I'd probably say
08:10the FA Cup because at the end of the day, nothing beats lifting a trophy. And that would
08:15also automatically put them in the Europa League at the very least next season anyway.
08:19So I think if you're a Brighton fan, you'd be saying silverware and to get to lift a
08:23trophy again, obviously, because they haven't won a trophy really since that League One
08:28title in 2010-11 season, if you're not counting those Classic Senior Cups since then. And
08:35obviously they did come close and they finished just behind Newcastle in achieving promotion
08:38to the Premier League in 2016-17, just one point in that year. They probably were a bit
08:43disappointed not to win the trophy and obviously getting promoted to the Premier League was
08:47the main aim that season. But they obviously haven't lifted silverware really at all in
08:52their club's history. So I feel like an FA Cup would be massive. And to do that this
08:57season, especially in the current climate with the amount of money that's in football
09:01and the amount of competition there is. And we've mentioned it in previous podcasts, but
09:05the FA Cup's wide open and Brighton really should be looking at this as a really big
09:09opportunity for them to do that. And as I say, if they do it, they're in the Europa
09:13League at the minimum. And if they then can get to the Champions League spots by league
09:17position, then that's a bonus, I think.
09:19Yeah, couldn't agree more with that, Sam. Well put indeed. This Saturday, Seas Albion
09:24visit City in a massive game in the race for the Champions League. City, by their ridiculously
09:28high standards, have had an abysmal campaign. City are used to challenging for Premier League
09:32and Champions League honours at this stage of the season. But after Saturday's 1-0 defeat
09:36at Surprise Package, Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola's team are in serious danger of
09:40missing out on European's Premier League club competition for the first time since 2010.
09:46Funny club, aren't they, City, at the moment? They're still City, but they've had a bit
09:49of a shocking season there by their standards. How do you see this one going and how are
09:54Albion stacked in terms of injuries going into this one?
09:57Yeah, it's one I'm really looking forward to, actually. And as you say, it's going to
10:01be quite crucial in the shake-up for these Champions League places. I saw the City-Nottingham
10:09Forest game last week and I actually thought City played quite well in that game. And as
10:13Brighton know, Nottingham Forest is a tough place to go this season. So, I think City,
10:20yeah, they haven't been at their best. But I saw signs in that game that they are still
10:26going to be a really tough force to be reckoned with. And they've still got some great players,
10:31obviously, that they can use at the Etihad. So, it's going to be a tricky game for Brighton.
10:40But Brighton are going to go there full of confidence. And when you look at Brighton's
10:46front five that they have, you probably wouldn't swap them at the moment on current form for
10:52too many players at the moment. They've got one of the best attacking units in the Premier
10:57League at the moment. When you look at Jakub Kvinte, Karol Matoma, Rute, and then Jal-Pedro
11:03in behind as well. Danny Welbeck can then come off the bench as well. And that's a really
11:08potent force as well. So, yeah, I think it's going to be a very entertaining game and it
11:14will really shape Brighton's season in terms of what they can do. They've got 10 more matches
11:20to go in the Premier League this season, pushing for those Champions League spots. And yeah,
11:26it's going to be one of those crunch games that you really look forward to at this stage
11:30of the season.
11:31Yeah, absolutely. I reckon it'll be a cracker. Best of luck to Brighton this weekend. We
11:35will take a short break now, but stay tuned as we were discussing all things Crawley Town.
11:41Welcome back to part two and substitute Panuche Kamara rescued a precious point for Crawley
11:45in the last minute as the Red Devils held playoff chasing Reading on Saturday. Crawley
11:49were heading to a fourth successive League One defeat when Kamara struck with a neat
11:52finish to cancel out Reading's first half opener. Sum that performance up for us, Mark.
11:57On paper, that sounded like a very positive result for the Reds.
12:02I think anything that's not a defeat is a positive result for Crawley at the moment.
12:07But it was an odd game because it was two quite poor sides, I thought. And at the end,
12:12I just had the feeling that nobody really deserved to win it. But Crawley, more than
12:16held their own against Reading and certainly second half, they absolutely dominated possession.
12:24Just couldn't create any chances. I think Kamara's effort was the third shot on goal
12:29in the second half. And when you're losing one nil, fighting relegation, fighting for
12:34your lives, it's not really good enough to not just bombard Reading's goal when you've
12:40got as much possession as you got. But Reading defended well. But yeah, they just couldn't
12:46get any real high quality chances. And I think it was the same on Tuesday night against Charlton
12:51as well, which we'll come on to. But it's hard work at the moment. And I don't know
12:57if it's just a lack of confidence. They've had a poor run of results, as we know. And
13:02maybe it's just a little bit of lack of belief there. I mean, they're trying their hardest.
13:07They played well at times. They played some really nice football. I know we're going to
13:10get on to Toby Malarkey, but it was good to see him back. But yeah, it's frustrating.
13:17And yeah, they did. And obviously, they're missing Rashaan Hepburn, Murphy, Anto, Lashawani
13:21at the moment, through suspension. So they're lacking a little bit of squad depth in terms
13:28of attacking. Will Swan played on the left against Reading. Then he went up top. And
13:33he worked really hard, but just didn't have any chances provided to him. So yeah, it was
13:39positive in the sense they didn't lose. But it was a sort of missed opportunity. And I
13:43think it probably is down to a little bit of lack of belief at the moment. And they
13:46have got a lot of injuries. Dion Conroy is now out for a little bit. Bradley Ibrahim
13:51came on late on after having an injury. Jeremy Kelly was still injured for Saturday, but
13:56he came on as a sub on Tuesday. So they still haven't got their full squad. And I think
14:02that's a bit of a problem as well. They're lacking. The word bare bones has been used
14:07so many times this season for Crawley Town. It just seems every game we're down to bare
14:11bones. And it sounds like an excuse. It is a reason why, because they haven't been able
14:18to get consistently their best team out. So all in all, all that waffle, it was a good point.
14:28Well, you've mentioned Toby Malarkey there, Mark. The defender returned to the Crawley
14:31Town starting lineup after a six-week layoff and helped his side get a vital point against
14:36Reading. What did you say about his return, Sam? And how much of a boost will he give
14:40the Reds' backline?
14:41Yeah, it's a really good boost for Crawley. I think obviously they've really had missed
14:46actually. And he was obviously out for six weeks due to a back injury and only had one
14:49training session before he was back in the starting 11. So I mean, that just goes to
14:52show kind of how important he is and how crucial the second that you can get any kind of chance
14:57of playing, he's straight back into the action. And he said, if you think too much about it,
15:01it can go the other way. But being thrown straight in after one training session,
15:05after being out for six weeks actually helped him. He said it's helped not having too much
15:09time to think about it. His legs were a bit gone towards the end of the game, but he felt
15:13normal to be back out there. And he found his feet quite nicely, he said. And he said probably
15:18only those closest to him know kind of how the injury affected him. So that's, yeah, obviously
15:23it goes to show kind of how much that really impacted him obviously in his personal life.
15:27And I'm sure he'll be absolutely delighted to be back in action. And obviously pleased
15:32with the performance and pleased to get a point against Reading. I was hoping for a
15:36similar performance against Charlton, which we'll discuss. But it's, yeah, on a personal
15:41note for him, he'll be delighted to be back in action and really good for the club as well.
15:46Yeah, absolutely. Good to have him back. Meanwhile, Bristian Munch and Gladbach fan
15:50Mark Slonek hit a major milestone at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday, which is a
15:54sentence I didn't think I'd ever say on this podcast. Why did Mark take in Crawley v Reading,
15:58Mark? And what magnificent achievement has he now got under his belt?
16:03Yeah, so it was amazing. So I turned up to the ground on Saturday and I had a phone call
16:07from Ben Levin, the vice chairman. And he said, I've got an amazing story for you. And
16:13I thought, all right, OK, OK, what's this all about? But in fact, it was a really nice story.
16:19And yeah, so I met this guy, Mark Slonek, and he's from Germany. And yeah, he was completing
16:25the 92. He was supposed to be at the New Year's Day game against Charlton. That was obviously
16:31called off because of the weather. So yes, so he turned up and he said it was just luck that
16:38turns out that it wasn't planned that Crawley was going to be the last club he goes to. But he
16:42turned up and he's travelled to 55 different countries, 1,200 different matches, and he's
16:48completed Switzerland. He's completed Germany, now the UK. And it's just an incredible achievement.
16:55I mean, he's obviously got a lot of money and a lot of time, but fair play to him. And yeah,
17:00he just said he just loves football and that's what he wanted to do. And he said he's so pleased
17:04to be able to just complete the act and join the 92 club, which is, I don't know how many people
17:10have completed it. I imagine it's quite a unique club. So yeah, no, fair play to him. And yeah,
17:15and it's a shame Crawley couldn't get a win for him and he didn't bring Crawley luck on Saturday.
17:19But yeah, really nice story. And there's a video interview on our website that you can see with
17:24Mark Slonek. Absolutely. It's a lovely little story. But back to matters on the pitch. Thierry
17:29Small's first half goal gave play-off chasing Charlton a narrow Ligue 1 victory at Crawley on
17:33Tuesday night. Crawley's fourth defeat in five matches leaves them nine points in safety with
17:3710 games remaining. What did you make of the Reds' performance, Mark? It sounded positive,
17:42but I don't know if positive is going to start cutting it at this stage of the season.
17:48Yeah, exactly that. Again, it sounded very much a bit similar to the Reading game, but
17:53by all accounts, they played a bit better. But yeah, they just lacked that quality
17:59Rob Elliott said in his post-match that they didn't have that quality in the final third.
18:03They had a good hold of the game, especially in the second half of the game, but they just could
18:07not break Charlton down. I mean, Charlton have been in incredible form since Crawley beat them
18:11in early December. And yeah, they're a big strong side and they defend really well. But he said it,
18:19Rob Elliott said it was a bit of a scrappy affair. But yeah, again, they're just lacking that belief
18:25in front of goal. And actually just creating that, creating those clear-cut chances,
18:29they get a lot of possession, but you've got to turn that into chances and goals.
18:33But it's just not happening for Crawley in that sense at the moment. Again, they were still
18:36missing Hepburn, Murphy and Shawanee through suspension, but they're back this Saturday now.
18:42So that will be a big boost for them. But yeah, it's just not going their way at the moment.
18:48They just need that little bit of luck. I remember Scott Lindsay saying last year,
18:53actually, at one point when they were on a little bit of a winless run,
18:56you just need one of those goals that comes off someone's face or their bum or whatever
19:00just to go in and just to change their luck. I mean, Toby Malarkey said after Saturday's game,
19:04just one win, just one win, one moment will hopefully put them on a good run and give them
19:10every chance of getting out of it. It's looking tougher and tougher that they will get out of it
19:14now. But you never know. Stranger things have happened in football.
19:18Yeah, you've mentioned it and the Reds are now nine points adrift of 20th place,
19:21Peterborough and League One survival in general. But to make matters worse for Crawley,
19:25the Posh have a game in hand and if Peterborough were to win their game in hand,
19:29the Reds would then be 11 points adrift of safety. It does make grim reading, Mark,
19:34at this stage. Is there still hope that Crawley can maintain their League One status or
19:38we don't want to say doomed, but is it looking quite likely that they will go down?
19:43I was watching Sky Sports News last night when the Liverpool penalty shootout with PSG was
19:49happening and they were doing a little summary of all the results and they sort of said,
19:53oh, the bottom four look like they are cut adrift now. And you sort of tend to have to agree,
19:58don't you? Because it's looking hard. And I like you say, if Peterborough win that game, 11 points,
20:03they've got to get four wins and hope every other result goes their way of the last 11 matches. So,
20:09I mean, it's a big, tall ask. But the only sort of glimmer that they've got is that
20:14they're playing a lot of teams around them. They've got Bristol Rovers,
20:17Peterborough, Exeter, Northampton and Shrewsbury all in those last 11 games. And four of those
20:26are at home. So, if you look to those as your four wins and if you can pick up anything away
20:31from home, but they've got some tough away games, Stevenage, Rotherham, Huddersfield,
20:36Birmingham. I mean, Birmingham are probably going to have won it by the time Crawley play them.
20:40It's looking quite desperate now. I mean, you never say never, but you just can't see where
20:50that next win's coming from, the way they're playing and the lack of quality and the lack
20:54of chances they're creating. So, you just hope that, like I said, something goes their way
21:00at Huddersfield on Saturday, if they can just get something. But at the same time,
21:06it could work in their favour. They've got nothing to lose now because I think the general
21:10consensus is that they are pretty much down. They are relegated. So, surely there's no pressure then
21:17if they think you're down. Just go for it. No player wants a relegation on their CV. So,
21:21just go for it and just hopefully they can relax a little bit and just go for it. But
21:26I know it's not as simple as that. No, absolutely. Well, as you mentioned this Saturday,
21:30Caesar Reds visit seventh-placed Huddersfield Town, who sacked head coach Michael Duff on
21:35Sunday following their fourth defeat in five Ligue 1 matches. Saturday's 1-0 loss at Bristol
21:40Rovers proved to be Duff's final match in charge as the Terriers dropped out of the
21:43playoff places with 10 games of the season to go. How do you see this one going, Sam?
21:48With all that I've just said there, it does seem like the perfect opportunity to play,
21:52perfect time, sorry, to play Huddersfield for the Reds.
21:55Yeah, absolutely. On paper, it does seem that way. Obviously, Huddersfield had just one win
22:00in the last five games and obviously have had two consecutive defeats. So, that scene,
22:04Michael Duff obviously loses his job. They obviously are still well in the mix for a
22:09playoff place and they'll be looking at this game against Crawley as a big chance to get
22:14an important three points, obviously, because they're going to be having the same conversations
22:17about Crawley being the perfect team for them to play in the period that they're at the moment. So,
22:23it's a difficult one to call in that sense. Obviously, Crawley, as Mark said, you can go
22:27there. Just try and play as free-flowing football as they can and just try to turn any kind of
22:34position they might have in the game to chances, which they've not really been doing. Just not
22:39being able to have enough shots on goal and without that, you don't stand a chance. So,
22:44hopefully, Crawley can go there and do the fans proud to travel up there, because obviously,
22:50it's going to be a long away trip. So, fingers crossed, fingers crossed. I think that's all we
22:55can do at this stage, really. Crawley, obviously, are desperate for a win if they are to have any
23:00chance of staying up, really. Yeah, absolutely. And as ever, we will end with score predictions,
23:06starting with Brian's trip to Man City on Derryn, on Saturday. Derryn, we'll start with you. How
23:15do you see that one going? I genuinely think it could be anything. Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure if
23:20it's going to be cagey or if it's going to be open, but it's a make-or-break for them, really,
23:26in terms of their Champions League one. So, I'm going to go for a 2-2, I think.
23:33Sam, what do you reckon? I can definitely see there being goals in this and Brighton,
23:36I think they should fancy their chances against City. I think so. I think Brighton will go there
23:41and win. The form they're on, the confidence they're playing with, the squad depth they've
23:45got. I reckon I'm going to go for a 3-1 win to Brighton. I'm not too happy with that.
23:55Well, I am. Well, I am, because that's exactly what I was going to go for. I think Brighton
23:59are just going to take advantage of their form and Man City's form and just go for it and
24:04run away with a victory. Jao Pedro getting two of them. We don't think there's any chance of the
24:08old relentless Man City machine turning up on Saturday. We all seem pretty convinced Brighton
24:12are going to do it. Yeah, it's very rare would you really say Brighton were favourites for a
24:20game like this. But, yeah, if you look at it purely in terms of form and stats,
24:25Brighton are certainly in the box seat. But, yeah, I still think City are a very good team.
24:35Could be anything. Could be absolutely anything. Also, on Saturday, Crawley, as we said,
24:39made that trip to Huddersfield. Again, Mark, this could well be anything. Two sides devoid
24:44of confidence could either be nil or 4-4, I think. Yeah, like I say, I think it's a good
24:50time for them to be playing Huddersfield, although new manager bounce. I don't know
24:56if they've named anyone yet, have they? I don't think they have, no. So, yeah, interim boss.
25:01So, I think Crawley, yeah, I think this is going to be that one win Toby Malarkey's winning,
25:06going on about one win will change it all. So, I'm going to go for a 2-0 win with Rush
25:11on Hepburn-Murphy scoring two. Is this the start of the great Crawley
25:15town escape then, Sam? I think it'll be a draw. I'll go for a draw, which doesn't really help
25:21either team too much. Two teams that were desperate for a win and it would end in a one-on-draw.
25:28And finally, Darren, what do you reckon? What's going to happen at Huddersfield?
25:31Yeah, it's now or never now, isn't it, for Crawley? I'm going to go for a one-nil victory,
25:38one-nil victory for Crawley. Oh, excellent stuff. Well, best of luck to
25:41Brighton and Crawley this weekend and you can catch up with all this latest sports news covering
