00:00We will talk about a common condition that many of us experience, Rod.
00:05And this is the Urinary Tract Infection or UTI.
00:09UTI is an infection that affects the urinary system
00:15and it can cause severe illness and damage to a person's daily life.
00:20If that's the case, we will be joined by urologist Dr. Joseph Lee
00:25to explain the symptoms and treatment for UTI.
00:30Good morning, Doc, and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:33Good morning, Rod and Audrey.
00:37And thank you for inviting Rise and Shine and our viewers.
00:41UTI is not new to Filipinos.
00:44Even me, I experience this when I like fish crackers.
00:48Before, here at PayTV4, we have a companion that we watch every day.
00:52I went to UTI.
00:53But Doc, for our viewers who have deep knowledge,
00:58can you please explain what is UTI and how does it start?
01:04Urinary tract infections happen on both genders.
01:11There is no preference.
01:13But of course, we always say that sometimes,
01:16the incidence happens to be higher in the female
01:20because of the urethral tract.
01:22That's number one.
01:24Second, how does urinary tract infection happen?
01:28Okay, you have to remember,
01:30you have to have at least more than 10,000 colonies
01:36of our own bacteria, E. coli.
01:40There could be other bacteria that would be coming in
01:42on reference of other contamination or urinary tract infection.
01:47Then, third, the classification of urinary tract infection varies.
01:53You can have acute, one week.
01:55Chronic, more than one week.
01:57It can be recurrent infections in one organism.
02:03It can also be relapsing,
02:05a repeated urinary tract infection of another organism.
02:09It means that if there is an existing one,
02:11it is called a new organism.
02:15There is also a hospital-acquired urinary tract infection.
02:22It means that because of instrumentation,
02:24surgical intervention, it can happen.
02:26Then, of course, we have an infection due to complications.
02:31So, we have to see that urinary tract infection,
02:35even if it is said by our sometimes individuals
02:38or it is left unattended,
02:41varies from different classifications.
02:43From a simple to a more complicated.
02:45So, now, we have to focus on that
02:47because our fellow countrymen always say,
02:50Hey, it's hard for me to pee.
02:52I can't pee.
02:54I'm okay not to drink water.
02:56You were saying a while ago, right?
02:58We were discussing.
02:59I can stop peeing.
03:01Those are the things and those are just some of the consequences
03:04that may lead to urinary tract infection in the long run.
03:09Doc, when Audrey said that she already had UTI
03:11and this is common to people who have UTI,
03:14how do we know that I already have UTI?
03:18Yes, because you're right, Rod.
03:20Sometimes, once in our lifetime,
03:22you might have experienced UTI
03:26but that's depending on the acuteness of the UTI.
03:30Now, how do we know?
03:31Of course, it's very basic.
03:32Urinalysis, urine culture.
03:34There are others because we base it on urinalysis.
03:37When you say urinalysis,
03:39you get the peak of the past cells.
03:41It means, what is the infection count?
03:44It's always said.
03:45Is the past cell high?
03:47The WBC.
03:48But we should always remember,
03:50you know, Rod, Audrey,
03:52is we have to know the organism
03:53because if you know the organism,
03:55you know the sensitivity of the antimicrobials that you're giving.
03:59Because we're different.
04:00Sometimes, we're saying,
04:02we're asking for medicine.
04:04Right, Rod?
04:04We'll go.
04:05You're a friend.
04:06I have UTI.
04:07I have a bad feeling.
04:08Doc, give me medicine.
04:09When you're given medicine,
04:11sometimes, you'll come back after 10 days.
04:13It doesn't get better.
04:14Because?
04:15Because it's not targeted.
04:17Exactly.
04:18The organism is not targeted.
04:19So, the proper diagnostic that we can do
04:24to combine is
04:25do a urinalysis
04:27and do a urine culture
04:28so we can know the microbial.
04:31So, there's a specific antibiotic
04:35for that bacteria.
04:37Okay, doc.
04:38What are the risk factors of UTI?
04:42Who has a high possibility of having it?
04:45The pregnant women, for example,
04:47and the children.
04:49Actually, there's no preference.
04:51Even age.
04:52Now, how do you treat pediatric UTI,
04:58female UTI,
05:00geriatric UTI.
05:01What does geriatric mean?
05:02The elderly have UTI.
05:05The children have UTI.
05:07The pregnant women have UTI.
05:10So, it's different.
05:13The only thing that we need to know
05:15is that it needs to be done quickly,
05:19properly,
05:20and that your medicine is appropriate.
05:26Because UTI,
05:27when you see it at first glance,
05:29and you treat it at the initial phase,
05:32it's easy to treat.
05:33The problem, Audrey,
05:35is when we treat it on a shotgun basis.
05:40It's like,
05:40okay, I'll just give the medicine,
05:42and it's gone.
05:42Then, it comes back.
05:43Then, you have what I mentioned earlier,
05:45Rod,
05:46the relapsing.
05:49When it comes back, it's different.
05:50Because what happened is,
05:52the bacteria made the antibiotics into vitamins.
05:56It helps.
05:57It strengthens.
05:58It strengthens.
05:59When it strengthens,
06:00you have to remember,
06:01it can cause other bacteria
06:03that are very adaptable to them.
06:06It means that it's a friend.
06:08Okay.
06:08Come here.
06:10Let's go together.
06:10Quickly.
06:11The bacteria are adapting.
06:12They're also adapting.
06:13Yes.
06:14But,
06:15because it's grown,
06:16yes, it's grown.
06:17When the elders say,
06:20they only drink coconut water.
06:26This is the thick one.
06:28It's red.
06:29When you squeeze the coconut,
06:30it's red.
06:32Or you just drink coconut water,
06:33and the UTI will be gone.
06:35Actually,
06:36it's very simple.
06:38You just hydrate with simple water.
06:40Plain water.
06:41It doesn't have to be really branded or whatever.
06:43The coconut is also water.
06:46But it doesn't have any effect.
06:51In cranberry,
06:54cranberry is very good sometimes when you do.
06:58But research shows that there's an inflammatory.
07:00Once something has inflammatory,
07:02or high antioxidant,
07:05it can pacify and reduce the number of infection count.
07:11But cranberry has just a little taste of water.
07:16But it's also good.
07:18Anything that has fluid can wash off the number of bacteria.
07:29So you have to remember
07:31that you prevent the number of colonization count.
07:37The lesser the bacteria,
07:38the lesser the virulence.
07:43Because if there's a lot of them,
07:45then they become virulent.
08:01Yes, this is the thing.
08:14You have to have a follow-up.
08:16Have a clear urinalysis and urine culture.
08:32You have to call for a rest.
08:34You call for a rest.
08:36If you call for a rest,
08:38it's hard for the bacteria to rest.
08:41And they come in much more virulent.
08:43They're much stronger.
