At the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Que., on Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly pushed back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty, saying they were "not up to debate, period.”
She noted that some of her European counterparts initially dismissed his 51st state remarks as humorous but said, “Canadians are anxious.
They're proud people. And you are here in a sovereign country.” Joly stressed the seriousness of the issue in her discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

00:00Yeah, I think that many of my colleagues coming here thought that this issue was still a joke.
00:06And that, you know, this had to be taken in a humorous way.
00:14But I've said to them, this is not a joke.
00:18Canadians are anxious. Canadians are proud people.
00:21And you are here in a sovereign country.
00:24And so therefore, you know, we don't expect this to be even discussed or clearly laughed at.
00:33And so I think you should ask them that question today.
00:37We had a very long conversation, the Secretary and I.
00:42I wanted to be able to have a frank conversation with him.
00:46Of course, Canada's sovereignty is not up for debate.
00:50And we had a long conversation on tariffs and trade.
00:53The approach when it comes to a relationship with the U.S. and through my conversation with the Secretary
01:01was we will put maximum pressure on the Americans.
01:05And meanwhile, we'll work on finding off-ramps.
01:09Because we know ultimately, at the end of the day, the Trump tariffs are going to hurt Americans.
01:16What I said to the Secretary is Canada's sovereignty is not up to debate.
01:22Period.
01:24There's no argument. There's no conversation about it.
01:27There's no need to talk about it.
01:29You're here. You respect us. You respect our sovereignty.
01:32You're in our country. You respect our people.
01:34Period.
01:35Canadians are anxious.
01:37And there is a real fear of people across the country of losing their jobs
01:41and their families of being able to have access to decent livelihoods.
01:46And so that's why I feel the urgency and the team feels the urgency
01:51of making sure that we are putting maximum pressure on the American administration,
01:59the Trump administration, while conveying to the American people,
02:03who are the only ones that can ultimately really have President Trump change course,
02:09to say to them, well, this is bad for you too.
02:12And to all the American friends here today, my message is clear.
02:17Trump tariffs are bad for American people.
