Installing tiles is a process that requires careful prep and attention to detail. Here's a step-by-step guide for basic floor or wall tile installation:

---

Tools & Materials You'll Need:

Tiles

Tile adhesive (thinset mortar)

Notched trowel

Tile spacers

Tile cutter or wet saw

Level

Chalk line or laser level

Grout & grout float

Sponge

Bucket

Measuring tape

Rubber mallet (optional)

---

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Surface Preparation

Clean the surface: It should be clean, dry, and level. Remove dust, grease, or any loose particles.

Repair uneven areas: Use a leveling compound if needed.

2. Plan the Layout

Find the center: Use a chalk line or laser level to find the center of the room or wall.

Dry lay tiles: Lay out a row of tiles (without adhesive) to see how they fit and where you might need to cut.

3. Apply Tile Adhesive

Mix the thinset as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Spread it with the flat side of the trowel, then comb it with the notched side.

Work in small sections so the adhesive doesn’t dry before you lay the tiles.

4. Lay the Tiles

Press tiles into the adhesive firmly.

Use spacers between tiles to maintain even grout lines.

Check level regularly and make adjustments.

5. Cutting Tiles

Use a tile cutter or wet saw for precise cuts around edges or obstacles (pipes, corners).

6. Let It Set

Let the tiles set for 24 hours (or as recommended) without walking on them.

7. Apply Grout

Remove spacers.

Mix grout and use a grout float to push it into joints.

Wipe off excess with a damp sponge, rinsing frequently.

8. Clean & Seal (Optional)

After grout dries (usually 24 hours), polish off any haze.

Apply grout sealer if needed, especially in wet areas like bathrooms.
