Amanda Reynolds, une jeune photographe, est agressée par un intrus cagoulé à son domicile de Los Feliz, un quartier de Los Angeles. Le lieutenant James Dawson se propose d'assurer sa protection, ce qui ne manque pas d'attiser la jalousie de Liam, son associé au studio et ex-petit ami. Amanda fait l'acquisition d'une arme à feu sur les conseils du lieutenant Valencia, retrouvée morte asphyxiée dans son garage, peu de temps après lui avoir parlé au téléphone. Amanda et Liam décrochent un contrat publicitaire avec la marque Carlson et ils décident de donner une réception pour fêter l'événement. Amanda y invite le lieutenant Dawson, qui prétend avoir appréhendé son agresseur.
