White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addresses growing controversy around the House GOP’s passage of the SAVE Act, a bill that critics say could disenfranchise millions—especially women and marginalized voters. While Republicans argue it’s about securing elections, Democrats and voting rights activists warn the law could purge eligible voters, particularly married women whose names may differ on documentation. Hillary Clinton, among others, has spoken out fiercely against the measure.

00:00And a final passage vote now on requiring in-person proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.
00:08The bill also requires states to remove non-citizens from their existing voter rolls
00:12and allows lawsuits against election officials who register people without proof of U.S. citizenship.
00:18Passed without objection. The motion to reconsider is laid on the table.
00:23As you know, yesterday the House has the Save Act.
00:26And many married women, soon-to-be-married women, are concerned that the new voter ID requirements may inhibit their access to the polls.
00:36What assurances can you give women voters in America to ease their concerns?
00:41Sure. Well, the Save Act, as you mentioned, was passed by the House yesterday.
00:45This is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. I believe I'm getting that correct.
00:50And this act is a common-sense measure. It would require proof of citizenship for voting in our elections.
00:55The Democrats have been fear-mongering about this bill.
00:58Have been saying that married women, if their name has changed, they didn't change it on their identification, would not be able to vote.
01:05That is a complete fallacy. There are outline in the bill about how to avoid that.
01:09The President very much supports a common-sense solution to ensuring that only citizens can engage in our elections.
01:16This is critical to improving the integrity of our elections and also the trust that American citizens need to have in our electoral process.
01:24The President supports this bill, and that is a myth that has been proven wrong by the text of this bill.
01:30And I believe some of the co-sponsors of the bill have been very vocal in addressing that.
01:33And certainly, I myself, as a married woman, would not stand before this podium if their President did not support such a common-sense measure.
01:40In America, you can't drive a car, board a plane, buy fireworks without an ID proving you are who you say you are.
01:49So why folks are allowed to vote to decide the future of this country without proving that they are a citizen first?
01:56Mr. Speaker, I rise today in honor of the House passing the SAVE Act just moments ago.
02:01It's common sense that only American citizens should be able to vote in American elections.
02:07Congressman Chip Roy's SAVE Act will close election loopholes by ensuring that every state requires voters to provide proof of citizenship before registering to vote.
02:17When non-citizens go to the ballot box, the electoral system is compromised and American votes are diluted.
02:24The American people have the right to determine the future of our country, and we refuse to be disenfranchised by illegal votes.
02:31I was proud to support the SAVE Act when it passed the House today.
