00:00A 12 or 13-year-old survivor of incest being forced to carry a pregnancy to term?
00:07They don't want that?
00:09The overturning of Roe v. Wade and abortion rights has been at the center of the US presidential
00:14election.
00:15According to a survey conducted by the non-profit health policy organization, KFF, it is the
00:21top issue for American women younger than 30 in these elections.
00:27Women overall ranked abortion as their top three concerns after inflation and threats
00:32to democracy ahead of immigration.
00:35Welcome to Deep Dive with Outlook.
00:37Today, we will be discussing the US presidential elections and the impact of abortion rights
00:43on it.
00:44I absolutely support reinstating the protections of Roe v. Wade.
00:48Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has positioned herself as the reproductive
00:54rights candidate.
00:55Earning endorsements from organizations like the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Committee
01:01to Protect Health Care, and Reproductive Freedom for All.
01:05No, I'm not in favor of abortion, but it doesn't matter because this issue has now been taken
01:11over by the states.
01:13Former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump, on the other hand, has shifted his
01:18stance several times on the issue during the course of his campaign.
01:23Early last week, he said during a Fox News town hall, it's going to be redone, they are
01:29going to, you are going to, you end up with the vote of the people, they are too tough,
01:35too tough, and those are going to be redone because already there's a movement in those
01:40states.
01:41Earlier this month, he wrote on Truth Social that he would not support a federal abortion
01:46ban under any circumstances and would in fact veto it.
01:52But leading up to the presidential debate in August this year, when Trump's running
01:56mate J.D. Vance committed in an interview to veto a federal abortion ban, Trump dismissed
02:02it during the debate.
02:04Can you commit, Senator, sitting right here with me today, that if you and Donald Trump
02:09are elected, that you will not impose a federal ban on abortion?
02:13I can absolutely commit that.
02:15If such a piece of legislation landed on Donald Trump's desk, would he veto it?
02:20I think it would be very clear he would not support it.
02:21I mean, he said that explicitly.
02:22But would he veto it?
02:23Yeah, I mean, if you're not supporting it as the president of the United States, you
02:25fundamentally have to veto it.
02:26So he would veto a federal abortion ban?
02:28I think he would.
02:29He said that explicitly that he would.
02:31And again, Lindsey, Lindsey.
02:32I don't think he's ever said explicitly he would.
02:33I didn't discuss it with J.D. in all fairness.
02:36J.D., and I don't mind if he has a certain view, but I think he was speaking for me,
02:41but I really didn't.
02:42That same month, he also said he will vote against a ballot measure in his home state
02:48of Florida that would protect abortion rights.
02:51His decision to vote against it came just one day after he made this statement.
02:56Well, I think the six week is too short.
02:58It has to be more time.
03:00And so that's and I've told them that I want more weeks.
03:03So you'll vote in favor of the amendment?
03:05I'm voting that I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks.
03:09Critics believe the wavering position of Trump is an attempt to thread the divide between
03:14his anti-abortion supporters and the majority who support abortion rights.
03:19But as the elections get closer, we can see Trump openly expressing his stand on a federal
03:25abortion ban.
03:26Some think this could also be the presidential candidate's attempt to counteract the anger
03:31over the Roe v. Wade ruling that limited Republican gains in the 2022 midterm elections and boosted
03:38Democrats' performance in state races in Kentucky and Virginia last year.
03:44Abortion will be on the ballot in 10 U.S. states for the November 5 election.
03:49Lawmakers in New York and Maryland have also approved amendments for the ballot, aiming
03:55to enhance existing protection for abortion in their state constitutions.
04:01So far, voters have chosen to protect or expand abortion access in seven states since the
04:07court's decision, including conservative strongholds Ohio, Kentucky, and Kansas, highlighting
04:13the issue's ability to swing the elections.
04:16Outlook's next issue will be covering U.S. presidential elections in more depth.
04:21So stay tuned.
