Newy said the secrecy made it feel more like an FBI interrogation than a press event. He called out the disconnect between the team’s leadership and the fans, stating that the Mavs failed to control their own narrative, and the defensive emphasis felt like a smokescreen.

01:04I was in Cleveland when the Browns moved, and we had conversations with the mayor about, uh-oh, what's next?
01:10They didn't do that to us, though they said no cameras, but they did say you could come in here and talk to us.
01:15But, I mean, it wasn't anything like this where they were – you're just like, what are you trying to –
01:19like, you need me.
01:21That's the other thing about, like, you need me.
01:24That was the wildest thing about it.
01:26And so I initially asked Tim McMahon, hey, did you get an invite?
01:31He's like, to what?
01:32He didn't know about it at first.
01:37Anyway, he pushed back and said, look, we have to – we need to be able to record this.
01:42Because, you know, while you're telling us you're going to record it, we need to make sure that it doesn't break or that we're getting exactly what we want.
01:50Because at first they would just say, we're just going to give you a transcript.
01:52And lo and behold, the transcript didn't show up from the Mavericks until 4.41 in my email inbox.
01:57So luckily we were able to record it, but they told us there was no live tweeting.
02:02And they said we cannot air the audio.
02:06So, like, I have it, but I can't put it on air.
02:10So these are the restrictions that they gave us.
02:13It just wasn't a good look.
02:14When it was all done later on, I just talked to somebody I knew over there like, you know, this wasn't good.
