00:00This is not a game. This is a 12-week job interview. It's a dog-eat-dog situation.
00:13Fourteen people have come to London in search of a job.
00:18There is no phone-in here. There is no text number. There is no panel of judges.
00:25I'm the one that decides who gets fired and I'm going to be the one ultimately who decides who gets hired.
00:32They've come to battle it out for a job with Sir Alan Sugar.
00:37I am the most belligerent person that you could ever come across.
00:40Tough and straight-talking, Sir Alan's built a business empire worth 800 million pounds.
00:47Business is not about coming, piss my money up the wall.
00:51He's offering one job with a six-figure salary.
00:55To get it, they're going to have to live and work together.
01:00Don't fucking dick me around. I'm getting pissed off with it.
01:02Quite frankly, I'd like to get rid of the bleeding free of you.
01:05This is the ultimate job interview.
01:08You're fired. You're fired. You're fired. You're a lightweight. You're fired.
01:15Previously on The Apprentice.
01:20Joe survived her first showdown with Sir Alan, to everyone's surprise.
01:26Sir Alan set their next task.
01:29Buying is one of the most important things.
01:33The teams had to negotiate the best price for the same ten items.
01:37If you do it for a tenner, I'll take it then.
01:39I'm done.
01:40As leader, I'm going to be watching.
01:42Joe took charge of her team.
01:44There's going to be no game playing. There's going to be no messing about
01:47because I've got eyes and ears in the back of my head.
01:49But her abrasive style put everyone's backs up.
01:52We can. We can't do it. Why? Give me the phone and I'll tell her.
01:57On the boys' team, Paul used every trick in the book to drive down prices.
02:02I'm getting married. I'm getting married. Yeah, I'm getting married.
02:05But Manny found the haggling hard to take.
02:08What the guys are telling me to do now is beg.
02:11We are completely out of cash. It's a bit annoying.
02:16It was a narrow victory.
02:18Boys win by eight pounds.
02:21In the boardroom, Karen and Alexa were quick to point the finger.
02:27Who should get fired then? I have to say Joe then.
02:30Who do you think should be fired? I have to say Joe.
02:33You're looking good.
02:34Then it was Alexa's turn to come under attack.
02:37I'm very concerned about you being a bit weak.
02:41I do not believe that I'm weak. Quite the contrary.
02:44And I really need to be given that opportunity, I believe,
02:47to show myself in project manager role.
02:49All right, you got it, OK?
02:52You're staying. You've spoken up for yourself.
02:55That's what it's all about. I've heard nothing from you, Karen.
02:58You're fired.
03:00Karen became the third casualty of the boardroom.
03:04Now, eleven remain to fight for the chance to become The Apprentice.
03:17At the house, the candidates wait to see who survived the boardroom.
03:21I think Karen will go, to be nice to them.
03:23I hope no.
03:24I think Karen will go.
03:25Joe, without a shadow of a doubt.
03:28Joe's very strong at defending herself.
03:30Joe, for three reasons.
03:31Number one, poor planning.
03:32Number two, the fact that she didn't impair the other team.
03:36Number three, she took no accountability for the task.
03:38She didn't fulfil the roles.
03:39We didn't do the basic things you should do when you're leading.
03:42She didn't manage.
03:43End of.
03:47I bet Joe and Alexa come back.
03:49Karen will be gone.
03:50Anyone who doesn't agree with me, bet you 50 quid.
03:52I think it's Karen and Joe.
03:54Can you imagine who comes back?
03:56Yes!
03:57Oh!
03:58Oh!
03:59Oh!
04:00Oh!
04:01Oh!
04:02Oh!
04:03Oh!
04:05Oh, well.
04:07Alexa.
04:08That's what happened.
04:09Say it, sit there.
04:10I did.
04:11So why Karen?
04:12At the end of the day, Sir Alan is a fair bloke.
04:14Like he said, you don't do bullshit, you don't do waffling.
04:16He knows what the deal is.
04:18You know what I mean?
04:19And he makes the decision and he made that today.
04:21None of us knew what was going to happen.
04:23And, you know, in the end, I ended up saying, look, I think I really need the chance here to show myself and what I can really do.
04:33Does that mean you're PM for the next task?
04:35I would hate to now get fired without having had the chance to be PM.
04:40Nobody wants to leave without proving, you know, who you are.
04:43Sorry.
04:44I just want to know what it is.
04:50Good evening, Dylan speaking.
04:52Hi, this is Jenny calling from Sir Alan's office.
04:54He wants you to meet him at the Oxo Tower restaurant.
04:56Oxo Tower's restaurant?
04:57The cars will be there to pick you up at 6.45 tomorrow morning.
05:01Lovely.
05:02Thank you, Jenny.
05:03Cheers.
05:04Bye.
05:05Guys, phone call.
05:06We need everybody in.
05:07Yeah, okay.
05:08We've got to meet at the Oxo Tower's restaurant.
05:09Oxo Tower.
05:10Okay, done.
05:11That's about it.
05:12Done.
05:136.45.
05:14The candidates head off for the briefing.
05:29Having won the previous two tasks, the boys seem to have bonded.
05:35We've had a lot of fun together recently.
05:36The girls haven't.
05:37Not for a while.
05:38We bonded.
05:39And time.
05:40Bonded.
05:41Yeah.
05:42I think it's a crucial part of the team functioning to bond.
05:43What does bonding mean to you, though?
05:44Bonding means to me that you're actually...
05:45Okay, let me answer that.
05:46Bonding means to me that we're all on the same wavelength.
05:47We're all working to the same goal.
05:48Right.
05:49Okay.
05:50Sir Alan has called the teams to one of London's top restaurants overlooking the Thames.
05:51And he's got a surprise for them.
05:58Good morning.
05:59Good morning.
06:00How are we doing?
06:02Yes.
06:03I think it's a crucial part of the team functioning to bond.
06:07What does bonding mean to you, though?
06:08Bonding means to me that you're actually...
06:10Maybe I've got a bit of a bit of a different view of bonding.
06:11Bonding means to me that you're actually...
06:12Okay, let me answer that.
06:13Bonding means to me that we're all on the same wavelength.
06:14We're all working to the same goal.
06:15Right.
06:16Okay.
06:17Sir Alan has called the teams to one of London's top restaurants overlooking the Thames.
06:18And he's got a surprise for them.
06:19Good morning.
06:20Good morning. What I'm going to do is I'm going to try something very, very different.
06:25Ladies, I want one of you to put themselves forward to run the boys' team.
06:31Gentlemen, I want one of you to put yourself forward to run the girls' team.
06:38Alexa, move over to the boys' team. Manny, move over to the girls' team.
06:43Right, Alexa, you said you wanted to prove to me that you could be a team leader.
06:52You've got your chance now, okay? You've got a big task on your hands coming up.
06:56On top of that, you've got five men you've got to organise.
07:00Manny, we're going to see your skills, not only in business, but how you're going to manage a bunch of women also.
07:07This week, there is the Thames Festival.
07:11What it is, is a great festival that stretches from Tower Bridge right up to Westminster.
07:17Now, I've arranged for you two marquees in pole position, and you are going to turn those marquees into a themed restaurant.
07:26The team that makes the most amount of profit is going to win.
07:30The team that doesn't is going to lose, and in that losing team, one of you will get fired.
07:41The Thames Festival attracts half a million people to London's South Bank.
07:47The teams must transform these marquees into fully functioning restaurants.
07:54Manny's first meeting, leading the girls. He's keen to assert his authority.
08:00Can I say something?
08:01Go ahead, yeah.
08:02Harrods, when we were there the other day, they've got a truly British thing going on.
08:05They've got a British thing, okay.
08:06So that's already been...
08:07No discussion in a brainstorm, I want quick fire.
08:10Okay, so British, British thing, okay.
08:12What else?
08:13What else?
08:14Okay, just give me words, anything.
08:15Families.
08:16What else?
08:17Energy, okay.
08:18It's an experience that we're going to have when we get there.
08:19It's an experience for them.
08:20Okay.
08:21Let's put multicultural down here.
08:22Unique.
08:23Multicultural.
08:24You know, it's like the city.
08:25Portable.
08:26The whole world in one city.
08:27The whole world.
08:28Whatever we produce has got to be easy to eat.
08:29So people actually...
08:30Easy to eat, okay.
08:31What I mean is easy that you can take it and eat it out.
08:33Other ideas?
08:34It was a big decision this morning when I decided to go across to the girls team.
08:39My decision was based really on their previous performance.
08:43I think they've underperformed.
08:44I think they are capable of performing much higher.
08:48Other ideas?
08:49Come on.
08:50Maybe it's a leadership issue.
08:51I don't know.
08:52If I can get them working as a team, I think we're going to be a high-performing team.
08:56What we need to do also is now split up into two teams.
08:59One of us is going to go and meet with the cadre and see what they can provide us.
09:04And one of us will go to the...
09:05The themes.
09:06The theme.
09:07Yeah, we can do that.
09:08Cambridge graduate Alexa has to control the boys and their ideas.
09:13What do we need to decide?
09:14Said, sorry, do you mind if I just kick this off?
09:17Yes, of course.
09:18We need to decide what sort of food genre we're going for and what sort of theme we want.
09:24The key is simplicity.
09:26You know, it's just volume.
09:28It's just getting the food out.
09:29Yeah.
09:30If it takes five minutes, guys, honestly, it's too long.
09:32For me, it's about the family and children as well.
09:34So it's got to be a very simple food that we get the whole family in.
09:37The chips are good because you can have chips on their own.
09:39You can take them away in a comb.
09:40You can have fish for the mums and dads.
09:42Any kids who don't want them in with battered sausage and chips.
09:44The problem...
09:45Not the problem.
09:46That's my idea.
09:47Let's move on.
09:48No, no, no, it's fine.
09:49It's cool.
09:50It's just that what I was going to suggest is with fish and chips, you can't leave it
09:52out.
09:53Where do you store it?
09:54What I was going to suggest is pizza is brilliant because there are no other pizza stands.
09:58And again, that's going for a niche, it's going for a specialist area.
10:02And in my experience, running businesses, that is the way forward.
10:05It's flexible, vegetarian, carnivores, it covers the lot.
10:09And we can go for an Indian pizza, you can have an Italian pizza, you can have...
10:13That's the point.
10:14So you can have lots of varieties of pizzas.
10:16That will mix well with the multicultural feel of the festival.
10:19I think Alexa, you know, bless her socks, a big task with five guys.
10:24She was prepared to go with any suggestions.
10:26I could have turned around and said, shall I dye my hair blonde?
10:29And she would have said, yes, let's all dye our hair blonde.
10:32Ha, ha, ha.
10:38Both teams have been allocated caterers.
10:41Manny has dispatched Michelle and Ruth to develop a menu.
10:45What about, like, barbecue?
10:48Which leads to barbecue?
10:50Quite high risk, quite dangerous, it's a very public space.
10:52And you are going for quite a big catchment,
10:54and I think if you've got barbecues and children, they're not a good mix.
10:56So you've got to bear in mind, the time you've got to prep all this,
10:59you've got one day to do it.
11:01You weren't saying that it's going to be quick to produce?
11:03Yeah.
11:04Low-skilled labour, I think.
11:05Yeah.
11:06What about crepes?
11:07It's cheap, isn't it?
11:08It's put on with flour, water and eggs.
11:09Yeah, it is cheap, yeah.
11:10You're going to be cooking, aren't you?
11:12I'm not doing the whole service, no.
11:13I believe you're actually going to be cooking.
11:15The girls call Manny to discuss menu options.
11:27Hello?
11:28We're considering at the moment noodles, crepes.
11:32Crepes is the one that stands out, because there's the whole Brittany sort of theme,
11:39and I think we can build in a theme with crepes.
11:42With noodles, there is only one theme, which is an oriental theme,
11:45and we're stuck with that, aren't we?
11:49Sir Alan wants the restaurants themed.
11:51We need to be as quick as we can, because I'll...
11:54Manny takes Sharon and Joe to a prop house for inspiration for his crepe idea.
11:58Western-y kind of stuff.
12:00Yeah.
12:01Western themes, okay.
12:02Kind of seafood-y, that kind of thing.
12:04Okay, seafood.
12:05You know, you've got kind of food service bars or...
12:06Okay.
12:07That's just fab.
12:08So you've got an Egyptian theme here.
12:09Egypt, yeah.
12:10Okay.
12:11Egypt's good because it's large scale.
12:12Yeah.
12:13What do they eat in Egypt?
12:14Michelle and Ruth call Manny again to find out what theme he's come up with,
12:23so they can tailor the menu and order ingredients.
12:26I think I'm going to make a decision, because you need a decision.
12:29We're going to go for a sea-faring theme.
12:31Sea-faring theme?
12:32Nets.
12:33Rivers.
12:34Kits.
12:35Kits.
12:36Kits.
12:37Kits.
12:38Kits.
12:39Kits.
12:40Kits.
12:41Kits.
12:42Oh, is that actually linking to the product that you're selling?
12:45It doesn't, at all.
12:46With crepes?
12:47There's...
12:48There is no particular link.
12:49The only link that we can come up with is Paris, and this is the Thames Festival.
12:56Somehow we can make the link from the crepes to the Thames, somehow.
13:00Yeah.
13:01I cannot see crepes in the Thames.
13:04Well it can't be Paris.
13:05I do it sometimes.
13:06Paris, but maybe bring, make the decision on the majority, but I cannot see that going
13:11together.
13:12Hello?
13:13Is that a united decision, yeah?
13:14It's as united as we're going to get it.
13:17Okay, speak to you soon.
13:18Bye-bye.
13:19Manning's management currently, and I hope it changes quickly, is pretty poor.
13:24He's not listening to the advice that he's been given.
13:27I'm not saying that I know it all, but I have been here and done it before, and he should
13:32be really pulling out my strength.
13:34The girls have gone ahead with their order for crepe ingredients, but Manny has had
13:39a rethink.
13:40I think we've missed a trick.
13:41I think we should have pitched noodles first.
13:44Hello?
13:45I didn't want to be dictatorial, but if you want me to, I will be.
13:50Okay.
13:51Do the oriental theme with noodles.
13:54You're talking about the classic oriental, yeah?
13:56Classic oriental, we'll have, you know, maybe a Buddha sitting in the corner.
14:00I don't know.
14:01Okay, cheers.
14:02We've completely changed.
14:03They want us to go for the oriental and then push the crepes.
14:05What?
14:06And we're going for the classic oriental theme.
14:08Well, that's Manny.
14:09I'll lock it here.
14:11I think we can do a really great job there, can't we?
14:15I don't know how we'll bring in the learning.
14:17It's not the edge.
14:18It's not the edge for me.
14:19Well, we'd have to make an edge on top of it.
14:21Do you understand what I'm saying?
14:22Yeah.
14:23We'll find something on top of that.
14:24Can you talk to me as well?
14:25I'm sorry, sorry, Sharon.
14:26Yeah, sorry.
14:35Alexa's pizza team have also split in two.
14:38Hi.
14:39Hi.
14:40She's taken her boys with restaurant experience to meet their caterers.
14:44Thanks very much.
14:45Go straight through on the right-hand side door and then the second door on the right.
14:48I mean, to be honest, just to give you a bit of background around the group here today,
14:52I mean, myself personally, I've got eight years previous experience managing and actually
14:56working and doing service, you know, waiting as a waiter.
15:00Again, Tom has 14 to 15 years' experience, family business, so that's hands-on experience.
15:05So, you know, you have got some professionals here.
15:08It's crucial, with my experience, that you and I, we get along with that music.
15:11That's the most important thing.
15:13Communication has to flow.
15:15Dan, from your experience, how many people do you think you'd look to be selling to in
15:19an hour?
15:20I haven't got a bloody clue.
15:21It's only for you to commit yourself to say, okay, so many thousands of people,
15:24then we know we have to order X amount of fish, X amount of this.
15:27The only other way we could look at it is how many pizzas we want to make.
15:31Yeah, so basically, if we turn around and say, well, based on the budget we've got,
15:34we want to make 500 pizzas.
15:36Now, 500 pizzas generates six slices per pizza.
15:40Well, at least I've got a figure now that can work.
15:42Can you do that between nine and five if we get you all of the ingredients?
15:45If you've got a minimum of three other people?
15:48Well, the question is not whether I, it's whether you can be.
15:52You're not professionals.
15:54I actually used to work on a pizza counter in a supermarket, believe it or not.
15:59Personally, just pushing it.
16:02Okay.
16:07The other half of Alexa's team are at the prop house.
16:10We've got everything that you'd want for British or for Italian.
16:13They're looking for costumes for their Italian pizza restaurant.
16:16Hey, you messed with me, I carve you up.
16:21Look at this.
16:23We are enjoying.
16:24Excuse me.
16:27The food in the apprentice house is...
16:29Fantastic.
16:30Taking its toll.
16:31Awesome.
16:32I'm in favour.
16:33Absolutely excellent.
16:34Good stuff.
16:35Right.
16:36That's it.
16:37That's the last.
16:39No comment.
16:40Manny's girls want to know how many people, or covers, they're catering for.
16:50Okay.
16:51Let's go out, you know, whole hog and let's aim for a thousand covers.
16:57Are you sure?
16:59I'm sure.
17:00I'm sure.
17:01So that's 25 every 15 minutes.
17:0625 covers we're going to sell every 15 minutes.
17:09Are you sure about that?
17:10Yep.
17:11Two minutes.
17:12Um, Ruth, Michelle?
17:14Yeah?
17:15Go for a thousand covers.
17:18That's what we're going to aim to sell on Saturday, yeah?
17:21You must be very confident of your theme then.
17:23I can't wait to see it.
17:25I'm not confident of the theme.
17:29I'm more confident in my team.
17:35After spending most of the day discussing pizza ingredients, Alexa and her team arrive
17:40at the wholesalers to place orders.
17:47But they didn't check the opening hours.
17:50Well, I think that the way forward today is to make sure that we get the orders in.
17:54Yeah.
17:55These guys are not, you know, they haven't disappeared, they're not dead.
17:58They'll definitely pick up the messages and they'll call us back.
18:03Unable to meet face to face, Said has to leave orders on the wholesaler's answer phone.
18:08So there's no one to haggle with.
18:11We need a hundred chickens.
18:13We need 30 kilos of minced beef.
18:16And we need 45 kilos of gammon, which is boned and rolled gammon off the bone.
18:22Okay.
18:23So I'll repeat that again.
18:2445 kilos of gammon, minced beef, 30 kilos, chicken, a hundred chickens.
18:36After a 15 hour day, the teams are back at the house.
18:41Manny gets his girls together for a meeting.
18:44I just felt that my opinion has not been recognised at all today.
18:49That quite a lot of the things and advice that I have given and the experience that I have has been ignored.
18:54It's the way I work.
18:56All the options.
18:57I did actually continue to communicate to me what was going on.
19:01You go from a divergent phase to a convergent phase, which is where we are now.
19:05We're through the divergent phase, okay?
19:07We're not going to go off on tangents.
19:08That's what we were doing quite, it was planned.
19:11We were going through a divergent brainstorming phase.
19:14I was encouraging any ideas that people had, purposely.
19:18You just said now, you weren't happy with what we've ordered.
19:21You tell me what you're not happy with.
19:22No, no, I'm not getting any of that argument.
19:25I'm PM, I'm asking you a question.
19:26I want an answer.
19:27You're PM, so you do that.
19:28I want an answer.
19:29I thought we've got a mismatch, in my opinion.
19:31Of what?
19:32Tell me what the mismatch is.
19:33There's nothing.
19:34You're just being vague.
19:35I don't understand a word you're saying.
19:37You're so vague.
19:38You're saying you're not happy with what we've chosen.
19:39Listen, I'm not having this conversation.
19:40There's a mismatch.
19:41Tell me.
19:42Don't disappear, because we've not finished the conversation.
19:45Give me some...
19:46Sharon!
19:47Sharon!
19:48I'll tell all of you, I haven't got time for this.
19:52And I'm not interested in, you know, spoon-feeding people.
19:57I think that comment is actually out of order.
20:00We're professionals, we know what we're doing.
20:02You are!
20:03If somebody's got an individual issue with you, you need to sort it out.
20:06I mean, she just feels like she's raised and raised and raised and raised,
20:09you know, this isn't working, this isn't working, this isn't working,
20:11and you've just kind of gone, shut up.
20:13This is just fucking stupid.
20:15You know, we're all disjoining.
20:16We're all disjoining.
20:17We're all disjoining.
20:18We're all disjoining.
20:19So all you can do is make your views in a constructive way.
20:22He has been derogative.
20:24He has made decisions without the consent of everybody.
20:27And I'm totally and utterly pissed off.
20:308.30am.
20:45A big day for both teams.
20:48They must get their food ready for tomorrow's Thames Festival.
20:51Unfazed by last night's row, Manny's turned the girls into a production line,
20:58working on a thousand portions of noodles.
21:02With his team slaving in the kitchen, Manny slips away to order drinks.
21:07Hi.
21:08Are you going to be helping me?
21:10I need to buy a drink.
21:12Is that okay?
21:13What's the difference between 7up and Sprite?
21:19The boys' project manager, Alexa, takes Sam to her printers.
21:24She's set aside a whopping £500 for leaflets.
21:28We went through on the phone, didn't we, the leaflets that we need.
21:31The A5 size, two colours, single sided.
21:34So that sounds great.
21:36So Samuel has knocked up an idea for the design.
21:39This isn't going to knock your socks off, mate.
21:41So don't...
21:43Essentially, it's the...
21:45What we're talking about is a kind of Italian flag.
21:47Yeah.
21:48So you guys could be green.
21:49White, red.
21:50Is it red?
21:51I think it's green, white and red.
21:52I think it is.
21:53When I was at school.
21:54Yeah.
21:57The rest of the boys are at their kitchen.
22:00They plan to produce 500 pizzas from scratch.
22:04So now, like I said, we need to decide who's going to be in charge today from your group.
22:09Yeah.
22:10And who's that going to be?
22:11I'll be in charge.
22:12Okay.
22:14The chicken order arrives, but there's a problem.
22:18When Saeed left the message with the butcher, he didn't specify the weight.
22:22And the chickens are bigger than normal, basically.
22:24So there's a slight difference in price.
22:26Now, yesterday, what we did the costing.
22:28Okay.
22:29100 chickens.
22:30We costed it for £1.88 per kilo.
22:33Okay.
22:34Today, it's £3 per kilo.
22:36How much does that affect that cost, mate?
22:38So now...
22:39When you're ordering, you have to be specific.
22:41So things like this.
22:42It's not just costing them money.
22:43It costs them time as well.
22:44It's a very quantity of cheese.
22:46You've got 100 kilos of gravy.
22:48Ginger.
22:49Saeed's expensive cheese order has also cost the team more than they planned.
22:54Well, that mozzarella's just completely blown our budget.
22:56It's £300 worth of cheese.
22:59What?
23:00As a worst-case scenario, do not spend any more than £100 until we call you otherwise.
23:05£100?
23:06You're saying we've got £100 left for our marketing?
23:13Okay.
23:14Hey, listen, mate, that's going to blow all of our marketing out of the water.
23:20I...
23:21We don't know what we're doing at the moment.
23:22We've got to fit...
23:23The dairy's come in a lot more than what's expected.
23:25Okay.
23:26Um, it's just, you know, shit happens on the project, so we just need to fix it.
23:31Yeah.
23:32I'll just do it.
23:33I'll just do it.
23:34Guys, just a quick update.
23:36With the budget, we made the wrong assumption, which has put us slightly in the shit.
23:41I think the main responsibility now is to get the pizza done.
23:45There's a discrepancy with the chicken, and no one's taking responsibility for it.
23:49There's a discrepancy with the mozzarella, and no one's really taking responsibility for it.
23:52I mean, yes, we are in the shit.
23:53We need to find a solution.
23:54So, I think, to be honest...
23:55It's like seeing when you're winning, and when shit at the fan, none of them want to know.
23:59We are running behind schedules.
24:01But the good news is that we're all working very, very hard.
24:04Yes.
24:05And, you know, all we can do now is really just go all out and see if we can, like, hit the target
24:10of 500.
24:11Between you and me, we'll get close to that.
24:15Right.
24:16I think we will solve this.
24:18I mean, there's no way we're going to get defeated by it, that's for sure.
24:26Hi.
24:27Can you probably switch to Natalie, please?
24:29Project manager Manny is sorting out his restaurant design, well away from the kitchen.
24:34I cannot just let you walk away, let you leave without a place.
24:42His girls have spent four hours cutting vegetables.
24:46Next, 50 chickens to shred.
24:48I can do it.
24:49I can do it.
24:50I can do it.
24:51It's only a chicken.
24:52What do you want to do?
24:53Oh, the smell is disgusting.
24:55I'll take it and a half.
24:56That's fine.
24:57I'll do whatever the project manager wants, but his management style, in my opinion, is
25:02very closed.
25:03He doesn't build rapport with people, and I've noticed that since he's come in the house.
25:10Not one for getting his hands dirty, Manny has more pressing business matters.
25:15Serviettes.
25:16Now, I'm looking at at least a minimum of a thousand, of course.
25:21A colour scheme within the marquee?
25:23Black, quite oriental, would go.
25:25OK.
25:26But they are more expensive than white.
25:27Are they?
25:28Mm.
25:29All right.
25:32Alexa and Sam return to help her team turn ingredients into pizzas.
25:37The final split that we agreed on these, it was 150 margarita.
25:41Yeah.
25:42100 bolognese.
25:43Yeah.
25:44100 tandoori chicken.
25:46150.
25:47150.
25:48And we will be making these on a pro rata basis.
25:53And the chickens only find themselves in the chicken tikka?
25:57In the chicken tikka thread.
26:00So there's 100 chickens and 100 chicken tikka pizzas.
26:05Chicken per pizza.
26:06That is...
26:07Sounds quite a big chicken.
26:08That sounds like a lot of chicken.
26:09It's too many chickens.
26:10We went on board.
26:11We have it.
26:12So what's the deal?
26:13So best value...
26:14OK.
26:15What we might find on the day is that more people want chicken pizzas than margaritas say,
26:27and we'll have the chicken to put on.
26:29Yeah.
26:30But yeah, that's...
26:31Interesting.
26:32Too many chickens.
26:33Thanks.
26:34Not only are they making toppings, they also aim to produce pizza bases by hand.
26:48Being overordered on ingredients, the pressure's on to make their target of 500 bases.
27:03Manny's back to oversee operations.
27:06His girls have been shredding chicken for most of the day.
27:10We're gonna start shredding the chicken with us.
27:11Yeah.
27:12There we go.
27:13There's shit loads of chicken.
27:14I'm shredded.
27:15And it is a nightmare.
27:17Bye.
27:18We've been going for 13 and a half hours, and we're shredding chicken.
27:23I'd be more than willing to help, but there were other things that needed to be done,
27:30and someone had to do them.
27:31It just happened to be me, so...
27:33I think Manny hasn't got his hands dirty enough.
27:35That's my opinion.
27:36He said, come on, girls, the thinner you shred the chicken, the further it goes.
27:41Well, don't tell me, mate.
27:42I've been standing here 10 hours doing it.
27:44Do you know what I mean?
27:46The team finally come together for one last push.
27:49Come on, everybody, get on now.
27:52I'll be careful, but you can't get spliced, right?
27:56Get him up here.
27:57I'll be careful.
27:58I'll be careful.
27:59I'll be careful.
28:00I'll be careful.
28:01I'll be careful.
28:02I'll be careful.
28:03I'll be careful.
28:04I'll be careful.
28:05Come on, baby, just party with me.
28:06Let it loose and set your fire to the ground.
28:08You can see when you're sacked the dump.
28:09So let me sacked the dump.
28:10So let me sacked the dump.
28:11Come on.
28:12With everyone mucking in, they finally finish.
28:15finish
28:27alexa's team are attempting to prepare four times as much food as many
28:34obviously i have got concerns at this stage because
28:37day has not gone as planned it's nine o'clock at night now
28:41some of the guys have been here since nine o'clock in the morning
28:45so it's been a very long day and we're still not there yet
28:50they've made a vast amount of topping for their pizzas
28:58the chef checks progress towards their target of 500 bases
29:03they keep coming to me and say how many how many we got
29:05they think i'm going to say imagine number like 150 or 100 or something
29:0963.
29:11i think somebody out here the project manager needs to now look at it and say
29:14let's be realistic guys
29:18we're not going to get these done
29:20i think the project manager is out of a death definitely
29:27with no obvious leader in the kitchen no one seems sure who should be doing what
29:33at the end of the day what you're doing is a bit of a luxury for
29:37that but the hand does need to be shredded at some point
29:40i can make your mind up
29:42fuck's sake i mean i'm getting pissed off
29:44do you know what i mean just fucking tell me what needs to be done and i'll do it
29:47all right don't fucking dick me around because i'm getting pissed off with it
29:51you know what i mean
29:54what i'm trying to do is understand where the bottleneck is and do it and then you're just saying
29:57don't fucking do that go and fucking do that i want someone here to take control and understand
30:02where the bottlenecks are and deal with it okay now what needs to be done i'm not
30:06i'm not so i'm gonna make a fucking decision
30:08samuel i'm not kitchen manager just can someone tell me what to fucking do
30:12i'll do it so guys let's just listen any swear on the chance you've done i will do it okay so
30:17let's just calm down and finish chopping the fucking pineapple no problem no problem okay
30:20no problem all right if you don't want me to help you listen to me
30:25i know i shouldn't be laughing now but i just think this is hilarious it was a luxury for me
30:30i'm sorry it's not the way it come across so you've got to look the way you talk to me okay
30:35i just can't i don't fucking talk to me like that again you all right
30:42just go and do it again
30:45they're realized they're in the ship and they're not going to achieve what they set out to do
30:53welcome to the catering world
30:54two in the morning alexa's team finally call it a day
31:04they've got toppings for 500 pizzas

38:39you will always be successful in your professional career mine says you will soon discover your hidden
38:46talent mine says you are the apprentice of sir alan
38:54it's morning and the candidates leave their luxury house with their packed bags
38:58next day the eleven candidates have packed and are heading for their appointment in sir alan
39:04sugar's boardroom
39:08all have left well-paid jobs for a chance to work for him
39:13but one is about to find out if the gamble was in vain
39:18sir alan's classic car is on the road with the man himself wearing a frown on the back seat
39:23the glass facades of high rises in the city
39:34the candidates are all waiting anxiously outside the boardroom
39:42joe sits with her arms folded sam scratches his head while ruth flicks her hair and looks about her
39:49the team leaders manny and alexa are standing side by side each lost in their own thoughts
40:01you can go through to the boardroom now
40:04alexa and manny lead the way into the boardroom where nick and margaret are already seated at the large table
40:10as they take their seats and wait for sir alan the tension is palpable
40:25sir alan comes through the door and takes a seat between his aides opposite the candidates alexa averts
40:31her gaze
40:37you think you've done a good job i did the best job i could
40:41how'd we get on here how'd you like having a lady operating you any good
40:47don't all rush could be better
40:51what do you feel i enjoyed it i think uh we i think we worked all right together as a team
40:57anything else you got to say chaps i'd be very surprised if we won
41:05perceptive
41:08margaret how about uh let us know what um velocity got up to well velocity is a float of two thousand
41:15pounds they spent one thousand and ninety seven pounds they took one thousand four hundred and
41:21twenty three pounds so they made a profit of three hundred and twenty six right okay
41:28nick well then victor also given a budget of two thousand they spent it
41:33pretty much all of it bar six pounds they spent all of it yeah bar six pounds took only uh 1186
41:40pounds which resulted i'm afraid in the thumping loss of 807 loss that's the first chaps
41:46that's a first we'll be dealing with that later ladies well done you've had a good day you obviously
41:54work very very hard tell you what we're going to do you remember the restaurant that we were in the

42:14as you know one of you is going to get fired off you go the candidates get up and leave the boardroom
42:24later alexa's team are sitting in silence in a cafe
42:30for the losers a post-mortem paul tulip headhunter
42:37if i'm chosen to go in the boardroom i'm going to laugh my head off and i'm going to absolutely
42:41annihilate alexa if she uses her head um she's going to take um done and side into the boardroom
42:49with her because it was clearly the catering part where we underperformed from a project
42:55man's point of view it's just been a disaster it's been a roller coaster of disasters obviously you can
43:02blame everything on a project manager at the end of the day but i am delegated the responsibility of
43:08the budget to dun and um really let him run with it it's an embarrassing result but i am by far and
43:16away no way the weakest member of the team evening time over the city in the upmarket riverside restaurant
43:25the winning team are tucking into some food and wine sir alan comes over and takes a seat at their table
43:35good evening hello hello well well done again thank you thank you how was it this fellow yeah is he any
43:43good he's brave i'd say brave very brave later as fireworks sent bursts of color into the nighttime sky
43:53the winning team stand watching them with wonder they raise their glasses for a toast
44:03daytime moving high above the skyscrapers in the city and the distinctive pyramid top tower as canary
44:10wharf the world reflected in the glass facades
44:13alexa and her team are waiting outside the boardroom anxious but composed
44:27saeed looks about him while dun moves his neck from side to side to relieve tension
44:35okay jenny will you send them all back in place
44:37you can go through to the boardroom now the men enter the boardroom first leaving alexa to follow
44:45on behind
44:48as usual sir alan sits between his aides with his expression deadly serious the candidates take their
44:55seats you put yourself forward for this task when i asked these gentlemen here what they thought about
45:02you i didn't get a kind of an immediate glowing report ansel tell me about gretel go on uh very
45:09much a consultative approach but um didn't make decisions at key times and also was quite easily led
45:15in my opinion
45:19if i've understood this correctly for what nick has been telling me there's a figure of 500 pizzas was
45:24has been bandied around this is what you as the team decided that you were going to make is that right
45:29or target to make is that right i had to take my lead from dun and saeed because i i don't have
45:37restaurant experience well you did work with pizza ponder you told me yes i sold pizzas at asda
45:43but i i don't really have experience of quantities that would go into producing um that number of pizzas
45:52not a good answer let's get to the calculations then dun what was the theory behind uh
45:59500 pizzas how did we get to 500 the 500 pizzas i suggested as a starting point and that's where
46:06but you just plucked it out of midair from we needed to start somewhere it was an error on our part
46:11our part your part i i don't know i i can't sound owned it at the end of the day all of you
46:17one of you him her you there were three people in the room and i put forward a suggestion and there
46:22was not one person that said actually i've got another suggestion over and above that when did the
46:27penny drop it seems it still hasn't bloody dropped when did the penny drop that this was a flawed
46:33project i raised the issue that uh 4 000 slices now what does that translate to um how many pizzas do
46:40we need to sell and in actual fact you know i was obviously worried about that and it calculated to one
46:45pizza every nine seconds which i felt was unreasonable i tell you what sunshine you do that you don't need
46:50a job with me you get you get a job with mcdonald's yeah what about you you're being very quiet at the
46:56moment what i would have expected at this point is the the project manager um to step in and say
47:01guys well listen you know i really do think this is unrealistic let's look at different options now
47:05hold on one second very very simple yes or no answer was you the one that was masterminding the
47:13production for want of a better word in the kitchen yes or no yes sir how many pizzas did you ended up
47:20making 90 pieces 90 i heard you bought 100 chickens yes one chicken per pizza is that right that was
47:26that it was dictated to me by the dictated by who by the chef but the chef said by 100 chickens you
47:31sure i don't know i took down 100 as a quantity and that was it you know like people there's little
47:37chickens and big chickens and i heard that they blumbered they were very big you messed it up didn't
47:41you you messed it up i've learned some lessons so i'm definitely sure you've learned the lesson there's
47:46no question of that it's a wonder why the lesson came so late because from what i can understand
47:51you've been in the restaurant business before haven't you i have i've managed restaurants you
47:54managed and managed under marco pierwai or something the titanic there's another bloody disaster in now
48:01any of you here should have recognized you ain't going to make this 500. your whole of your business
48:07plan is flawed now i'm so disappointed with a lot of you it all boils down to pricing and honestly yes
48:13we're pricing balls down to the what you dropped them in sunshine alexa you realize this is the
48:20third time you're on a losing team you put yourself forward you said you want to do it you said you
48:25wanted to show me so now you're going to tell me which two of these people you're going to bring back
48:31in this ballroom because one of you will get fired i'm going to have to bring back in with me
48:38dunn and saeed sir alan dunn and saeed but you three other gentlemen you go back off to the house
48:47and you three i'll see you back in here shortly
48:52the candidates get up and leave the boardroom sir alan watches them and shakes his head
48:57what a shower what a mess what a bloody shower outside paul ansell and sam say their goodbyes
49:08take easy
49:11alexa's sitting with her hands tightly clasped in front of her
49:17the first thing this morning you could see that none of them thought she was a good team leader
49:20right okay but then again i'm just trying to extract out of them who is responsible for what
49:24his budget man his job was to make money sure that whatever was spent it didn't exceed the budget
49:35was not his responsibility to decide what it was spent on this thing is very disappointing because
49:42any one of them could have spotted during the course of the day that they're not going to make 500
49:47well i've heard enough let's call them back we'll call them back in and get this over with
49:50the silence ready for you in the boardroom now saeed dun and alexa go back in and take their seats
50:06right this is it alexa i want to know why you as the project manager why shouldn't i fire you
50:14you shouldn't uh uh fire me me due to this task sir alan because i i gave my all to it
50:21i believe that i can go on from this and learn very much from the experience i can just go from
50:27strength to strength this is not holiday camp here or some college of further education where you know
50:34doom cops come to to learn what they're where to make mistakes you know you're supposed to be
50:39the brightest lot of entrepreneurs in the country one of the other things i'm struggling with is is
50:46that i've listened to his taylor woe i've listened to him also i listened to the others i don't know
50:51what you were doing can you tell me what you were physically actually doing other than being a strategist
50:58i was i was working throughout the whole thing i was i tried to split myself between the kitchen and
51:04marketing because i wanted to have an overview of the whole picture when things went wrong when he
51:08bought too many chickens what did you do then what did you say to him didn't you say to him you've
51:13bought too many chickens or you've bought two fatter chickens did you say to him my god we've only got
51:1990 pizzas mathematics said that the 720 potential bits of pizza that you had were costing four pounds 37
51:28each and you must have agreed to sell them for three quid yeah we signed surgeons i got yeah we sold them
51:35for three pounds sir alan because that was the price we thought the market could bear you went any
51:40higher you knew you were losing money basically we knew at that point that we would only just about
51:46break even at about five doomed doomed you were doomed i mean i didn't did acknowledge with the team
51:52that so who do you think who do you think responsible then as team leader who do you think is
51:56responsible i think um all three of us were in that meeting i want to know which individual is
52:03responsible who should i fire here today for this who's who's responsible for this disaster
52:09well i have to accept partial responsibility because i was saying i should fire you then
52:14is that what you're saying i'm not saying that you should fire me no dunn was there to manage the
52:18budget and um made numerous assumptions that didn't do us uh you know a lot of good in the long run
52:25so you want him to go instead of you i think um basically it's it's a hard call it's a hard call
52:33but um you're indecisive i wonder what's one of the reasons why this total project went pear shape
52:44dunn why should i keep you here so alan the failure of the project is purely on the fact that we bought
52:53we owed you you were in charge of the budget correct which we didn't exceed um the failure
52:58of the project didn't exceed i gave you the money with the intention of yes go and spend the whole
53:03two thousand pound make me ten thousand pounds i have not worked it out yet i'm not seeing where you
53:09where where you've contributed i said we need to shift dead stop i then made a suggestion we need
53:14to keep making pizza keep making suggestions so what do you do you make suggestions and then you look
53:19you know po faced at people and you see no reaction so what do you do you give up no i keep going but
53:25ultimately i am not the team leader and hence the reason why i'll back in this room for because dunn was
53:31involved in the initial discussion with the chef and it was all about those assumptions that we made that
53:37did the 500 pizzas was not really you think that's the main flaw in the in the project do you yeah i think
53:42i think once the 500 figure was there then that it was a downward spiral after that well only if you
53:50failed to make anywhere near 500. you're sitting here and you are that much away from walking out that
53:58door okay so i'm asking you who is responsible with regards to success or failure of this task alexa's
54:05responsible with regards to making only 90 pizzas saeed is you think saeed should be fired right and
54:12saeed what's your opinion about this so alan i i strongly disagree i'm not but i didn't expect
54:17you to agree exactly i'm a born fighter i i put in 150 you're not a ball manufacturer that's for sure
54:24you put me into any situation i'll give you put you in the kitchen mate i put you in the kitchen
54:28i gave him you know i put you in the kitchen and what did you do you made 20 of what you were supposed
54:33to make is that much from going out the door you're that much from going out the door you tell me why
54:39you should stay here because i'm a fighter and i will find i'm not interested in bloody fighting
54:43you tell me about this task i think with all respect i'm not having to go there was no milestones
54:49there was no contingency plan it was a free fall we could do what we want when you were buying on this
54:54telephone i'll have 100 chickens i'll have two kilos of mozzarella i wasn't buying didn't you we were
54:59placing the order then buying call it what you want okay we ran out of time that's why i could when you
55:04considering at the time you were bunny in a way there how much money was clocking up you didn't give it any
55:09thought to how much it was costing absolutely just just a second so absolutely you're going to
55:13negotiate with anybody i like taking on challenges and i because you know i i think it's it's part
55:19of my makeup i set you lot a task the other day right and i have got to fire somebody here quite
55:25frankly i'd like to get rid of the bleeding free of you now tell me why i shouldn't get rid of you
55:31now because i'm a winner and that's why you're not a bloody winner you're lost so i don't i've learned
55:37from my mistakes and i have learned from this definitely this will never happen again business
55:40is not about coming piss my money up the wall oh never mind sorry you lost it now you learned you
55:46won't do it again i've learned life the hard way from a young age i hold you 100 responsible and i
55:51gave 150 percent i hold you 100 responsible i stepped up to the mark okay and i deliver i'm sorry
55:58side i hold you 100 responsible but i warned you i warned you severely about this you have not come to
56:06the table today you have not told me what you did i still don't understand what you did he should be
56:12going with you also you're a very very bad manager you didn't manage this thing properly you are lightweight
56:19you're fired i'm really angry for the situation clear off the three of them head towards the boardroom
56:29door leaving sir alan looking seriously displeased saeed hangs back for a moment thanks for the opportunity
56:40cheeky bastard thank you the opportunity
56:44saeed punches the air then goes and gives alexa a hug
56:48a hug what a bloody mess eh complete mess what a bloody mess just like all the other fired candidates
57:00alexa carries her suitcase out of the office block and walks towards the waiting taxi
57:07it's um not very good to be called a lousy manager the point is that's one person's opinion i actually
57:13think that i am a good manager and um i'll go forward and and i will make a success of my career
57:19whether he thinks that or not the taxi carries on along a main road
57:29one job now 10 candidates sir alan's search for his apprentice continues
57:36next week morning sir alan this task is all about advertising sir alan lets the teams loose on his
57:4515 million pound jet oh you two teams are going to drum up an advertising campaign

58:05magic because we believe nothing is impossible magic for me just feels a bit musical most important
