Back pain is no joke. Nearly 65 million Americans suffer from it each day, according to the Health Policy Institute. Dr. Natalia Serrano, Senior Associate Director, Global Medical Affairs at Bayer, shares the latest news from a new study examining different treatment options.

This study examined over 300 trials of different non-surgical and non-interventional treatments for low back pain. Among the treatments effective for acute lower back pain, NSAIDs—nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which help reduce pain and fever—were among the few that proved successful. NSAID medications, like the active ingredients in Bayer Aleve® and Bayer® Aspirin, are some of the proven effective options in relieving this type of pain.

This study reaffirms the role of an NSAID as a science-backed option, underscoring their value as part of non-opioid, first-line care for lower back pain. It’s reassuring to see options like NSAIDs validated in rigorous, placebo-controlled studies.

Acute pain is short-term pain that comes on suddenly, lasts no more than six months, usually because of an injury, surgery, or illness. It’s your body’s way of saying, “hey, something’s wrong!”

Beyond medication, what else should we do to alleviate back pain? The doctor says it’s all about keeping a healthy lifestyle. “Eating healthy, sleeping well, sleeping on a supportive mattress, exercising, keeping hydrated, avoiding lifting heavy things,” she says, “all of these are strategies that will help you manage your lower back pain.”

Dr. Serrano also urges people to feel empowered to speak to their healthcare providers about their back pain and options that may be available based on their circumstances, because not all pain is the same.

This isn’t just about pain relief; it’s about accessible, non-surgical, evidence-based care that may be an option to empower people to get back to life.

00:00My name is Dr. Natalia Serrano. As a Medical Affairs Bay Area employee, I found this study
00:10very interesting. It examined over 300 trials of non-surgical, non-interventional treatment
00:17options for low back pain, and it found that amongst the few that were found to be successful
00:22and effective were NSAIDs. NSAIDs stand for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and they're
00:29the types of active ingredients found in products such as Bayer Aspirin and Bayer Relief that
00:35help relieve acute low back pain. The study reaffirms the role of NSAIDs as a science-backed
00:40option, underscoring their value as non-opioid first-line care treatment for low back pain.
00:46And you know, it's very reassuring to find these treatment options like NSAIDs that are
00:50efficacious and validated by these rigorous, robust, placebo-controlled scientific studies.
00:56Acute pain is short-term, it appears suddenly, it does not last for more than six months,
01:02and it is usually the result of injury, surgery, or illness. And it's essentially your body's
01:08way of raising its hand and saying, hey, there's something wrong here. So it's all about keeping
01:13a healthy lifestyle. So eating healthy, sleeping well, sleeping on a supported mattress, exercising,
01:19keeping hydrated, avoiding lifting heavy things. All of these are strategies that will help you manage
01:25your low back pain. So we want to encourage people to talk to their healthcare providers
01:30about their back pain, about the different treatment options like NSAIDs that are out there.
01:35Because all pains are not the same, and it really goes beyond the pain. It's about providing
01:39people with these accessible, non-surgical, non-interventional, evidence-based options like NSAIDs
01:47that may be an option for people to relieve their acute low back pain and to get back to living
01:53their lives.
