Evidence for the Resurrection

Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.  But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 00:00I think those are all the notices. So we're going to have a look at the resurrection second part.

00:08I spoke this morning on the subject. I gave you some of the reasons for the death and resurrection of Jesus.

00:15Particularly that he died for our sins and he rose again from the dead and he's alive today.

00:21We're going to have a look at some of the issues relating to it this evening.

00:25So let's just have a word of prayer as we come to the word of God.

00:27Lord, we do thank you that we can read from your word and we can study your word and learn from it.

00:33Pray that you help me to speak and help those who are here to hear and guide us into all truth.

00:38That we may know the scriptures, may know the reason for the season and also the reason for the hope that is within us in Jesus the Messiah.

00:48We thank you for this in Jesus' name. Amen.

00:53Okay, so I've got quite a lot of slides tonight.

01:06I have to say quite a lot of this is taken from Josh McDowell.

01:09If you know Josh McDowell, he wrote a book called The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict.

01:14And this is a sort of handbook if you want to know some of the reasons why we believe the Bible, why we believe in Jesus.

01:21And it's an excellent book which I recommend to you.

01:25So we're going to look tonight at the resurrection of Jesus.

01:28Resurrection is absolutely central to Christianity, to our faith.

01:33If you look in Paul's letter to the Corinthians, on Corinthians 15, verse 3, he says,

01:40So Paul tells us that some important facts there.

02:00One, that the reason for Jesus' death was he died for our sins.

02:05He did it according to the Scriptures.

02:07In other words, this was something which was prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures.

02:11He was literally dead, so therefore he was buried.

02:14And he rose again from the dead on the third day.

02:16And he also tells us that this was witnessed, first of all by Peter, then by the Twelve, then by Paul himself.

02:25Then he goes on to say by over 500 people at once.

02:28So there were eyewitnesses who saw this.

02:31It was a historical event which took place in time and space.

02:34It was not some kind of myth which was made up.

02:36It was a true event which happened and which changed the course of history.

02:41And Paul goes on to say in verse 12 of Corinthians 15,

02:46If Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty, and your faith is also empty.

02:51Yes, and we have found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God,

02:55that he raised up Christ from the dead, whom he did not raise up, if indeed the dead do not rise.

03:01For if the dead do not rise, then Christ did not rise.

03:03And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile, and you are still in your sins.

03:09Quite a strong statement there.

03:10He says, if Jesus Christ isn't risen from the dead, then your faith is futile.

03:14You are still in your sins.

03:15You might as well go home and do whatever you would do at home,

03:18because it's a waste of time to come and to listen to Tony Pierce speaking,

03:22or even to Paul speaking, or anybody else, because it's not a fact of history.

03:28But he goes on to say,

03:29But now Christ is risen from the dead.

03:31He has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

03:34For since by man came death, by man also came the resurrection of the dead.

03:40For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

03:45So don't go home.

03:46Stay here and listen to what I have to say.

03:49And above all, listen to what God says in his word.

03:51Because Jesus Christ really is risen from the dead,

03:54and he's become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

03:58Use of the word firstfruits is actually quite interesting,

04:01because in the Hebrew program concerning Passover,

04:06you have, first of all, the event of the remembrance of the Passover itself,

04:11the day when they came out of Egypt,

04:13when the firstborn were killed,

04:15and the Israelites were told to take the blood of the lamb

04:18and put it on the doorposts of their houses,

04:20and then the angel of death passed over those who were under the blood.

04:25And so it was a type, if you like, of our redemption,

04:27because if we're under the blood of Jesus,

04:29under the blood of Messiah,

04:30then the angel of death passes over us,

04:32and we pass from death to life.

04:35Paul was going to say somewhere else

04:36that Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

04:40But what's also interesting is that

04:42in the course of the Passover ceremony,

04:44in Bible times,

04:46on the first day after the Sabbath,

04:49during the Passover week,

04:51they had what they called the Feast of the Firstfruits.

04:54And the Feast of the Firstfruits

04:55was when they waved the firstfruits of the harvest,

04:58the first early spring harvest before the Lord,

05:01as I hoped that there would be a following harvest later on,

05:04and there'd be the whole ingathering

05:05of the people who are brought,

05:08who are provided for by the Lord

05:10in a sort of food kind of way.

05:13But Paul used this as a picture, if you like,

05:15of the Messiah.

05:16And he said that

05:17as Jesus died

05:19and was buried,

05:22and he was buried during the

05:23Sabbath time,

05:25and he rose from the dead

05:26on the first day of the week,

05:27which we call Sunday.

05:29Jewish people call it

05:30Yom Rishon,

05:30the first day of the week.

05:32As Jesus rose on the first day of the week,

05:34so that was the Feast of Firstfruits.

05:36He was the first fruits

05:37to rise from the dead.

05:39He was the first to rise from the dead.

05:41And the idea of the Feast of Firstfruits

05:42is that there'll be a following fruits.

05:45There'll be a second fruits,

05:46and the third fruits,

05:46and the following fruits,

05:47if you like.

05:48So if Jesus is the first fruits

05:50from the dead,

05:52then we who believe in him

05:53are the following fruits,

05:54if you like.

05:55So we're the ones who have come

05:56to believe in him.

05:58And he goes on to say that

05:59since by man came death,

06:01by man also came

06:02the resurrection of the dead.

06:04So the problem of the human race

06:06comes with the fact

06:07that we are going to die.

06:09Anybody here not going to die?

06:12Maybe not.

06:13If the rapture comes first,

06:14we'll be taken up before we die.

06:16But in the normal course of events,

06:17everybody who lives

06:18on the face of the earth

06:19dies universally, 100%.

06:22Death is 100% in every generation.

06:25And he says here,

06:26as in Adam, all die.

06:28Adam, first man,

06:31first person to disobey God

06:32along with his wife Eve.

06:34And as they disobeyed God

06:35and brought the curse

06:37upon the human race

06:38because of their disobedience,

06:40so sin came into the world

06:41and death came into the world.

06:43It's been like that ever since.

06:45And just as every generation

06:47sees death,

06:49also every generation

06:50sees sin.

06:51Anybody here without sin?

06:54No?

06:55No?

06:56None of us are.

06:58The only one who's been without sin

06:59actually is Jesus himself.

07:02And he says here,

07:03as in Adam all die,

07:04so in Christ

07:05shall all be made alive.

07:07How can we be made alive?

07:08Because Jesus,

07:09who was without sin

07:10and is without sin,

07:12who is God,

07:13became man and God amongst us,

07:15laid down his life

07:15as a sacrifice on the cross,

07:18died,

07:18was buried,

07:19and rose again from the dead.

07:21And as he rose again from the dead,

07:22he conquered sin and death and hell

07:24and gave it the right

07:25to those who repent

07:26and believe the gospel,

07:28that's you and me,

07:29if we have become believers in Jesus,

07:31to enter into his kingdom

07:32and have eternal life.

07:34So as in Adam all die,

07:36so in Christ

07:36shall all be made alive.

07:39To say that

07:39that all be made alive

07:40doesn't mean that

07:41every person on the face of the earth

07:43is given resurrection life

07:46because of what Jesus did.

07:48We have to repent and believe it.

07:50But if we don't believe,

07:51then we will have eternal life

07:53in another place

07:54which you don't want to go to.

07:56In other words, hell.

07:57So there's a choice actually to be made.

07:59And we have eternal life

08:00through faith in Jesus.

08:03So as you can see from this passage

08:05that the concept of the resurrection

08:06is crucial

08:07to our understanding of Christianity.

08:11Without it,

08:11the whole edifice falls apart.

08:13With it,

08:14the whole thing makes sense.

08:16Therefore,

08:17the major theme of the New Testament

08:18is the resurrection of Jesus.

08:20If you read through the New Testament,

08:22you find it underpins

08:23every book in the Bible.

08:25In the Gospels,

08:26it tells us how and why it happened.

08:28Book of Acts,

08:29it tells us how the message spread

08:30based on the fact of the resurrection

08:32and the eyewitnesses of the resurrection

08:35who were the apostles

08:36who preached the gospel,

08:37beginning in Jerusalem,

08:38going to Judea and Samaria,

08:40and then to the ends of the earth.

08:42The epistles tell us

08:43how to apply the message

08:45of the death and resurrection of Jesus

08:46to the newly founded churches.

08:48And the Revelation looks at it

08:50in a way from a cosmic,

08:52eternal perspective

08:52of the resurrection,

08:54looking even into eternity

08:55and the consequences of that.

08:57So if you read through the New Testament,

08:59it's all about Jesus

09:00and it's all about

09:01the resurrection of Jesus.

09:05And even if you care to look

09:06into the prophetic passages

09:07in the Old Testament,

09:08a number of them also point

09:09to the resurrection of the Messiah,

09:11which was to come.

09:13So if that's the case,

09:15and you're thinking now

09:17from Satan's point of view,

09:19which hopefully you don't think about too much,

09:21but if you were thinking about it

09:22from Satan's point of view,

09:23what would you try to do

09:24to discredit Christianity?

09:28Anybody give me an eye?

09:29What would you do if you were...

09:29Say Jesus didn't rise from the dead?

09:31Yeah, you'd attack the resurrection.

09:33You'd say that Jesus

09:34didn't rise from the dead.

09:36So the strategy of Satan

09:37down through the age

09:38is going to be

09:38to try to stop people

09:39from believing

09:40in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

09:42If you can do that,

09:44make people doubt,

09:45then he makes people doubt

09:46the whole story about Christianity,

09:48about Jesus,

09:49and the church

09:49actually becomes redundant.

09:53The church doesn't preach this

09:53and actually got another membership

09:54so I might as well pack up

09:56and go home.

09:58And today you've got

09:59major agencies,

10:01if you like,

10:02of unbelief.

10:03You've got the secular,

10:04humanist,

10:05Marxist forces

10:06pushing atheism

10:07and rejection

10:08of the supernatural,

10:10rejection of the existence

10:10of God

10:11and particularly rejection

10:13of the idea

10:14that Jesus

10:14is the son of God

10:16who died

10:16and rose again

10:17from the dead.

10:20You've also got

10:21other religions,

10:22Islam in particular,

10:23which put out

10:23an alternative version

10:24of the story.

10:26Reduce Jesus

10:26to the role of a prophet

10:27or just another

10:29religious figure

10:30or even a kind of

10:31glorified social worker

10:33doing good against evil

10:34and deny the fact

10:36that he died

10:37and rose from the dead.

10:40And

10:40Islam particularly

10:42says that

10:43Jesus did not

10:44die

10:45on the cross,

10:46therefore he didn't

10:47rise from the dead.

10:48Islam is actually

10:49the only major religion

10:50which actually

10:50specifically says that.

10:52But you'll find

10:52that all of the others

10:53say it in some form

10:54or other.

10:55Even the compromised church

10:56sort of turns Jesus

10:57into some kind

10:58of glorified social worker

10:59overcoming bad things

11:01with good things,

11:02not the saviour

11:03of the world

11:04who died for our sins

11:05and rose again

11:05from the dead.

11:07Having said that,

11:08we gave out leaflets

11:09last week

11:10and we tried

11:11to talk to people.

11:11We found some people

11:12were interested,

11:13some people said

11:13they'd come along

11:14but they haven't done

11:15but anyway,

11:16never mind,

11:16at least we did

11:17have a chance

11:17to talk to them

11:18and we gave out

11:19these leaflets

11:20about the resurrection

11:21and had one or two

11:22good talks.

11:24One of the things

11:24which I noticed also

11:25was that a lot of people

11:26actually,

11:28as soon as they saw

11:29it was something

11:29about Jesus,

11:31totally didn't want

11:32to know,

11:33didn't want to discuss it,

11:34didn't want to argue

11:35against it,

11:35they're just,

11:36not for me,

11:37turn it away.

11:39I have to say

11:39to my shame

11:40as a white man,

11:42the majority of people

11:42who did that

11:43were young white men.

11:46The majority of people

11:47who actually were

11:47interested and took

11:48some notice,

11:50most of them,

11:50not most of them,

11:52were non-white

11:52and quite often female

11:54so actually,

11:55young white men

11:56were the biggest

11:56sort of no-no,

11:58don't even bother us,

11:59don't even try to

11:59tell us about it,

12:01it's not for me,

12:02push it away from me,

12:04depart from me

12:05if you like

12:06and it's all about this,

12:09some people spend

12:10their whole life

12:11saying to Jesus,

12:13go away from me,

12:14depart from me,

12:14I don't want to know

12:15and when they die

12:16they're going to

12:17stand before him

12:17and what do they

12:18hear him say?

12:19Depart from me.

12:20He cursed it

12:21into the everlasting fire

12:22prepared for the devil

12:23and his angels.

12:25Not a good idea

12:26to tell Jesus

12:26to depart from you

12:27but that's what's

12:29happening today

12:29and that's what's

12:30happening in all

12:31generations

12:31and what God

12:33wants us to do

12:34is to believe it

12:35and to believe

12:36and follow Jesus.

12:37Now I'm going to

12:38go through

12:39some of the objections

12:40which people make

12:41to the resurrection

12:42and give you

12:44some answers

12:45to objections

12:46if you like.

12:48So we've actually

12:49got six main objections

12:50so bear with me

12:51we'll look at

12:52some of these.

12:54Objection number one

12:55the resurrection

12:57stories

12:59were made up

13:00by later editors

13:01of the gospel

13:02in other words

13:04the story

13:04was made up

13:05about 80

13:06to 100 years later

13:07and it became

13:09written down

13:10in the gospels

13:11many years

13:12after Jesus came

13:13by people

13:15who were not

13:15eyewitnesses

13:16but people

13:16who made up

13:16the story

13:17many years later.

13:19Maybe you've heard

13:19me talk about

13:20the book

13:20by Asher Norman

13:21a Jewish critic

13:22of Christianity

13:22called 26 Reasons

13:23Why Jews

13:24Don't Believe in Jesus

13:25and his big beef

13:26about the resurrection

13:27and the New Testament

13:29itself

13:29he says it was written

13:30I think he says

13:31about 100 years later

13:32by people who really

13:34made up the story

13:35many years later.

13:36Well when you read

13:40the New Testament

13:41and you look at

13:42the evidence

13:42you'll find that

13:43the resurrection

13:44event

13:45did take place

13:46in time and space

13:48the time when it

13:50happened was in

13:51the Passover time

13:52round about

13:5429 to 33 AD

13:55happened in Jerusalem

13:58in a specific place

14:00where it could be

14:00recognised

14:01in a tomb

14:02which belonged to

14:03a man called

14:03Joseph of Arimathea

14:04which was located

14:06in an identifiable

14:07place

14:08even as we've

14:10already heard

14:11there were Roman

14:11soldiers who were

14:12guarding the tomb

14:13who were real people

14:15now all of these

14:16people were located

14:18around the event

14:20and many of them

14:22would have been alive

14:23after the resurrection

14:24and after the disciples

14:25started preaching

14:25about it

14:26so basically

14:30they would have been

14:31there to discredit it

14:32if they wanted to

14:33and from the beginning

14:35it was clear that if

14:36you wanted to discredit

14:37Christianity

14:37you have to discredit

14:38the resurrection

14:39and one thing

14:41which you can work out

14:42from the New Testament

14:43is that the message

14:44spread

14:44very quickly

14:46going from

14:48Jerusalem

14:48to Judea

14:49and Samaria

14:49and then to the

14:50ends of the earth

14:51you know

14:53the famous story

14:53about the conversion

14:54of Saul

14:55or Paul

14:55on the way

14:56to Damascus

14:56most theologians

14:59believe that

15:00that happened

15:00round about

15:0135 to 36 AD

15:02that's within

15:03five to six years

15:05after the death

15:06of Jesus

15:06if you look

15:07in the story

15:08Paul was on his

15:09way to Damascus

15:10to arrest

15:11believers

15:11in Damascus

15:13that tells you

15:14that already

15:15the message

15:15had spread

15:15as far as

15:16Damascus

15:17from Jerusalem

15:17so it had spread

15:19within a relatively

15:20small few years

15:22to a place

15:23I think it's

15:24about a hundred

15:24miles north

15:25of Jerusalem

15:25over the

15:27Golan Heights

15:27into Syria

15:28and in the

15:31letter to the

15:32Corinthians

15:32Paul says

15:33that he went

15:34into Damascus

15:35and he was

15:35after he'd

15:37become a believer

15:38in Jesus

15:38and Ananias

15:40came and

15:40prayed for him

15:41and then he was

15:42let down

15:43across the wall

15:44into

15:44outside of

15:47Damascus

15:47because they were

15:48trying to

15:48arrest him

15:49and kill him

15:49he says

15:50he was

15:51escaped from

15:51Damascus

15:52in a basket

15:52when Aretas

15:53was governor

15:542 Corinthians

15:55chapter 11

15:56verse 32

15:57we know

15:58from

15:59Josephus

16:00history

16:00that Aretas

16:01was governor

16:02in Damascus

16:03and he stopped

16:03being governor

16:04in 39 AD

16:05that tells you

16:07that all this

16:07had happened

16:08within 10

16:09years of

16:10the beginning

16:12of the

16:12gospel story

16:14so it was

16:16which happened

16:17by eyewitnesses

16:18happened

16:20immediately

16:20had to get

16:21away

16:21immediately

16:22statement

16:25here from

16:25a man

16:26called

16:26William

16:26Craig

16:27knowing

16:27the truth

16:28about

16:28the

16:28resurrection

16:29he says

16:30without belief

16:31in the

16:31resurrection

16:31the Christian

16:32faith could

16:33not have

16:33come into

16:33being

16:34the disciples

16:35would have

16:35remained

16:36crushed

16:37and defeated

16:38men

16:38neither

16:39they continued

16:40to remember

16:40Jesus

16:40as their

16:41beloved

16:41teacher

16:41his

16:42crucifixion

16:42would have

16:43forever

16:43silenced

16:44any hope

16:44of him

16:45being

16:45the Messiah

16:45the cross

16:47would have

16:47remained

16:47the sad

16:48and shameful

16:48end of his

16:49career

16:49the origin

16:50of Christianity

16:51therefore hinges

16:51on the belief

16:52of the early

16:53disciples

16:53that God

16:54had raised

16:54Jesus

16:55from the dead

16:56not only that

16:57but they had

16:58spread the

16:58message

16:58immediately

16:59it happened

17:01straight away

17:02not 100

17:03years later

17:04as some would

17:04like to tell

17:05you

17:05story made

17:06up

17:06I once

17:08knew

17:08a somewhat

17:09crazy guy

17:10who used

17:11to communicate

17:11with me

17:12and he

17:12told me

17:12that he

17:14believed that

17:15Princess Diana

17:16was going to

17:17rise from

17:17the dead

17:17he kept

17:20reading me

17:20this

17:20and I said

17:21of course

17:22he said

17:23no Princess

17:23Diana is

17:24going to

17:24rise from

17:24the dead

17:24and when

17:25she rises

17:26from the

17:26dead

17:26there's going

17:27to be a

17:27great revival

17:28because people

17:29will believe

17:29in the

17:30resurrection

17:30of the

17:31dead

17:31anyway

17:33Princess Diana

17:34didn't rise

17:34from the

17:34dead of

17:35course

17:35and I

17:36don't know

17:36what's

17:36happened to

17:37him

17:37but he

17:37doesn't

17:37write to

17:38me

17:38anymore

17:38but just

17:39occurred to

17:40me

17:40supposing

17:40I said

17:41now

17:4127 years

17:43after she

17:43died

17:43actually

17:44Princess Diana

17:45did rise

17:46from the

17:46dead

17:46and I've

17:47got someone

17:47who saw

17:48her rise

17:48from the

17:48dead

17:48and other

17:49people saw

17:50her rise

17:50dead

17:50so you

17:51should

17:51believe

17:52that she

17:52rose

17:52from the

17:52dead

17:53what would

17:54you say

17:54to me

17:54you're

17:57crazy

17:57what evidence

17:58have you

17:58got

17:58you're

17:59telling me

18:00something

18:00which

18:00happened

18:02ago

18:02happened

18:03and nobody

18:04saw it

18:05at the

18:05time

18:05but you

18:06say

18:06somebody

18:06did

18:07see it

18:07trying to

18:08make up a

18:08story to

18:11so likewise

18:26believed it

18:26straight away

18:27and it

18:28was spread

18:28immediately

18:29and the

18:30message spread

18:30from Jerusalem

18:31to Judea

18:32to Samaria

18:33than to the

18:34ends of the

18:34earth

18:35which is

18:35what it

18:35tells you

18:35in the

18:36book of

18:36Acts

18:37going on

18:40let's see

18:40that Jesus

18:41actually told

18:41the disciples

18:42that this

18:42was going

18:43to happen

18:43and it

18:44wasn't a

18:44surprise to

18:45Jesus

18:45he said

18:46in

18:47Matthew

18:48chapter 16

18:49the time

18:50when Peter

18:50actually confessed

18:51that Jesus

18:52was the

18:52son of

18:53God

18:53and the

18:54Messiah

18:54then says

18:56from that

18:57time Jesus

18:57began to

18:58show his

18:58disciples

18:59that he

18:59must go

18:59to Jerusalem

19:00and suffer

19:01many things

19:01from the

19:01elders

19:02and chief

19:02priests

19:02and scribes

19:03and be

19:03killed

19:04and be

19:04raised

19:05the third

19:05day

19:06so Jesus

19:07told them

19:08it was going

19:08to happen

19:08before the

19:09event

19:10and in

19:13the

19:13gospel of

19:15Luke

19:15when the

19:16event does

19:17we read

19:18in chapter

19:19as they

19:20the women

19:21were afraid

19:21and bowed

19:21their faces

19:22to the

19:22earth

19:22they the

19:23angels

19:23said to

19:24why do

19:25you seek

19:25the living

19:25among the

19:26dead

19:26he's not

19:26here

19:27he is

19:27risen

19:27remember

19:28how he

19:28spoke

19:29to you

19:29while he

19:29was still

19:29in Galilee

19:30saying

19:30the son

19:30of man

19:31would be

19:31delivered

19:31into the

19:32hands

19:32of sinful

19:32men

19:33and be

19:33crucified

19:34and the

19:35third day

19:35rise from

19:36the dead

19:36in other words

19:38this was

19:38common knowledge

19:39to those who

19:40met with

19:41Jesus that he

19:41was going to

19:42die and rise

19:42from the

19:43dead

19:43and even the

19:44opposition

19:44knew this

19:45in Matthew

19:48in Matthew

19:50read to us

19:50this evening

19:50but let's

19:52followed

19:52the day

19:53preparation

19:53the chief

19:53priests

19:54and Pharisees

19:54gathered

19:55together

19:57Pilate

19:57saying

19:58sir we

23:57company of the

23:58priests and

23:58Pharisees have

23:59been impressed

23:59with the
