00:00Lost treasure, the foundation of legends and lore, and the greatest lost treasure of all,
00:15belonged to the night's death.
00:20Now, new evidence is being unearthed.
00:24We're finding unprecedented artifacts here.
00:27Pirate shipwrecks, untouched for hundreds of years, that may hold lost Templar treasure.
00:35These artifacts could be connected. I want to get to the truth.
00:40Historian Scott Walter joins world-famous underwater explorer Barry Clifford
00:46in an adventure to crack a secret code and rewrite history as we know it.
00:51Now, from the deepest corners of Madagascar...
00:57I want to find out if there's any evidence that the Templars were here.
01:03...to the west coast of India.
01:06Ha! That's a triple tower.
01:09This is big. This is big.
01:11This is huge.
01:15Scott Barry and the team find new clues.
01:18After 300 years of being in a shipwreck, to find something that's intact like that, I think it's just absolutely miraculous.
01:26That lead them on a chase to a mysterious island.
01:30You never know what you're going to find. You just never know.
01:33I would hate to say no to anything at this point.
01:37As they close in on an ancient prize.
01:40The Loos had more treasure than all of the pirates in the Caribbean command.
01:46Might be right underneath you.
01:47On the southern tip of the island of Madagascar, historian Scott Walter is on the trail of a surviving faction of the Knights Templar.
02:12The whole idea that the Templars ended in 1307 is a myth.
02:17They traveled all over the world.
02:19And I'm determined, more than ever, to get to the bottom of this mystery.
02:24Scott believes the Templars brought their legendary treasure here to Madagascar in the 16th century.
02:32And now, he has a new lead.
02:35A remote cave system in an area once lived to the Templars.
02:40The only way to reach it is by chopper.
02:44Chopper's here. Let's get up there and go take a look.
02:47Off we go.
02:58For the last five weeks, Scott's been on a whirlwind journey, trying to unravel the mystery that directly connects 17th century pirates to the Knights Templar.
03:09The Templars were an elite order of warrior monks, founded in the Holy Land in the 12th century, to protect Christian pilgrims.
03:20For centuries, they've been linked to legends of a great treasure that later vanished from history.
03:30Scott's investigation began with an ivory carving of Christ found by Barry on a pirate wreck in Madagascar, a relic Barry's convinced once belonged to the Templars.
03:41Scott followed the Templar trail from Israel to Portugal, where he uncovered stunning new information.
03:57After the put-down of the Knights Templar in 1307, they existed in Portugal, and all they did was change their name to the Order of Christ.
04:09What's more, Scott found out these Portuguese Templars were among the first Europeans to set foot on Madagascar.
04:18And on the southern end of the island, he found proof in the remains of an old fort.
04:27I've been on this journey to try to find any evidence I can of Templars here in Madagascar, and I found it.
04:36I mean, here it is.
04:39Scott thinks the fort once held Templar treasure and suspects there are other hiding spots on the island.
04:48We know that the Portuguese Templars were on this island.
04:54They had to have had valuables, gold, silver.
04:58Maybe they buried the treasure underground.
05:02As Scott helicopters to the mysterious caves, he first wants to examine a local myth.
05:08On a nearby cliff face, there are ancient markings, said to be man-made.
05:14Scott thinks there's a chance they could have been left by the Portuguese Templars.
05:19I am totally intrigued. I've got to figure out what this thing is.
05:28What's that down there?
05:31Let's take a look.
05:32See that below that bush?
05:34Down a little further. What's that?
05:37Yep, I think I see what we're looking at here.
05:39It's right here.
05:41It's running almost perfectly horizontal across the rock.
05:44The markings are a series of vertical lines.
05:48Two feet tall, stretching 300 feet along the cliff face.
05:54I have to say, I can see why people would think that it's man-made.
05:56But in my mind, there's no question, this is a natural geological feature.
06:03Scott's a trained geologist.
06:05And the strange rock indentations make perfect sense.
06:09You know, people say, Mother Nature doesn't make straight lines.
06:13That's absolutely false.
06:15She makes straight lines all the time.
06:17And here's a great example of a great ear.
06:19All right, Jared, you know what?
06:22I think I've seen all I need.
06:23Let's roll.
06:28Scott continues on to the mouth of the caves.
06:32He thinks the Portuguese Templars may have used these caves when they came to this area
06:37and could have left clues.
06:40This is exciting.
06:41This could be the one thing that really breaks this case wide open.
06:44I'm committed now, so here we go.
07:09You know, if the Templars were here and went down in this cave,
07:13they sure didn't have this climbing equipment that I have.
07:18But they had ropes.
07:19They know how to use them.
07:21And if they wanted to get down in here, no problem.
07:30Question is, did they leave anything in here?
07:37500 miles to the north on Isle St. Marie.
07:43Underwater explorer Barry Clifford is also on the hunt for evidence
07:47linking 17th century pirates to the medievalites Templar.
07:53Barry's return to a wreck he believes is the fiery dragon.
07:59The very site where the suspected Templar ivory Christ statue was uncovered.
08:04Obviously, this is where the Christ was found.
08:08The arms of Christ are missing.
08:10The crucifix is missing.
08:11So just keep your eye out.
08:13Anything that looks like that, okay?
08:15Yeah.
08:15Okay, good.
08:18I'm really excited about this part of the wreck
08:21because we don't know what to expect.
08:24Barry's right-hand man, Chris McCourt, is first in the water.
08:28Five days ago, while exploring the wreck
08:35of what Barry thinks is the fiery dragon,
08:38he came across something unexpected.
08:40It's definitely a shipwreck.
08:43Very big timber.
08:46The team carried out a cutting-edge sonar scan of the seafloor.
08:50Any minute now, you should see the fiery dragon.
08:55You got it yet?
08:56Yes, we have the ballast pile.
08:58You can see the ballast pile clearly.
08:59Look, look, look.
09:01That revealed a remarkable image of not one,
09:04but two ships lying on top of each other.
09:07Guess what?
09:09There's a big chamber in there.
09:11Most exciting was a hollow space
09:14near to where the two ships intercept.
09:17Very interesting to see what that is.
09:20Is it possible the mysterious second ship
09:28once belonged to the Portuguese Templars
09:30who came to Madagascar?
09:32Barry wants to find out.
09:35The team zeroes in on the hollow chamber.
09:41Yeah, I found something here.
09:43Pretty interesting.
09:45I found something here.
09:46I found something.
09:47Go ahead, Diver 2.
09:57I found something pretty interesting down here.
10:03I just want you to just leave in and get a look.
10:05Let's take a look at this.
10:15What the f*** is that?
10:17F***.
10:22It's an ivory tusk.
10:24This is an Indian elephant, most likely.
10:29It's been down there a long time.
10:30300 years old.
10:33Chris has found the ivory tusk of an Indian elephant.
10:38Back in the day, they used to call them elephant's teeth.
10:41And obviously, they were unfortunately popular.
10:43Today, the ivory trade is strictly controlled.
10:48But in 17th century India, it was the basis of a thriving industry,
10:54turning out thousands of exquisite carved religious items
10:57for export to Europe by sea.
11:02Merchant ships sailing from India to Europe
11:04had to make a long and dangerous voyage across the Indian Ocean.
11:08Isle Saint-Marie was the perfect spot for pirates
11:12to launch daring raids against these lucrative targets.
11:18The tusk raises an intriguing possibility
11:21about the ivory figure of Christ Barry found on the same wreck site.
11:27The team have always assumed
11:28it came from the Templar heartlands of Europe or the Middle East.
11:32But could it too, like the ivory tusk, come from India?
11:36It will need to be stolen by pirates based here
11:40at Isle Saint-Marie.
11:44It's a radical theory
11:46that could send the investigation in a dramatic new direction.
11:50One of the cool things about that is
11:52you could tell what types of ships
11:54the Fire Dragon was capturing
11:56because of what we're finding on board.
11:59There's a great story unfolding here
12:02and a lot of surprises are about to happen.
12:05We'll find out a lot more.
12:06Explore Barry Clifford
12:15and historian Scott Walter
12:17are trying to unravel a mystery
12:19that directly connects the medieval Knights Templar
12:22and 17th century pirates.
12:26So here we go.
12:28Scott's in southern Madagascar
12:29looking for clues left behind
12:31by Portuguese Templars
12:33when they visited the island
12:34in the early 16th century.
12:38Local legends have brought him
12:40to this remote cave system.
12:41Whoa, look at that.
12:48I want to find out
12:49if there's any evidence
12:50that the Templars were here.
12:52So there's only one way to find out.
12:55I'm going to go down this trail right here.
12:59This cave goes for a long ways.
13:04I don't know how far,
13:05but we're going to check it out.
13:06The highly secret of Knights Templar
13:13were rumored to have conducted
13:15many activities underground.
13:20In Templar tunnels in Israel,
13:22Scott saw symbols he believes
13:24they carved into the walls
13:25of these hidden chambers.
13:27This is a concept of sacred geometry.
13:31The Templars are absolutely into that.
13:37He's looking for similar evidence here.
13:40Well, this is awesome.
13:42I mean, look at these flowstone formations.
13:44They are thousands of years old,
13:46if not tens of thousands of years old.
13:50Okay.
13:51And it just keeps going down.
13:52I see something on the floor down there.
13:57I mean, there's bats flying around in here.
14:00Is that water, or what is that?
14:03Huh.
14:08It looks like there's
14:09three feet of water down there.
14:11I don't see anything in the bottom.
14:14This one's a dead end.
14:15Let's try another one.
14:22I want to see what that is there.
14:29Evidence of humans.
14:34We've got little gastropod shells,
14:38bone fragments,
14:39some organic material,
14:41but there's nothing here for me.
14:47I've checked every nook and cranny here.
14:49I've gone down every tunnel.
14:50Every one was a dead end.
14:52Now, whether they came in this cave or not,
14:54I don't know.
14:55I'm not finding any trace of it.
14:58This is time to move on.
15:01Scott's hit a dead end,
15:03but he's still convinced
15:04the Portuguese Templars
15:06brought their treasure
15:07to southern Madagascar
15:08in the 16th century.
15:11And he wonders
15:12if 200 years later,
15:14the notorious pirate,
15:16Captain Kidd,
15:17may have gotten his hands off
15:19as he scoured the emotion
15:21for plunder.
15:24Four weeks ago,
15:25the Templar pirate investigation
15:27shifted gears
15:28when Barry made
15:29an extraordinary discovery.
15:31A 100-pound metal ingot
15:36found on what Barry believes
15:38is the wreck of Kidd's flagship,
15:40the Adventure Galley.
15:42If this is Captain Kidd's treasure,
15:45it's beyond priceless.
15:48The big find catapulted Scott
15:50to New York City,
15:52where Kidd once lived.
15:55Scott learned
15:56the strange symbol
15:57on the bar,
15:58a triple tau,
15:59had Templar connections.
16:01Every Royal Arch Freemason
16:03in the world
16:05would recognize this
16:07as one of the symbols
16:09of Royal Archmasonry.
16:11It also has a connection
16:12to the medieval Knights campaign.
16:17It's well known
16:18that Kidd landed
16:19in southern Madagascar
16:21in 1697.
16:22Is it possible
16:25that this is when Kidd
16:26got his hands
16:27on the metal ingot?
16:29Scott arrives
16:30on Isle St. Marie,
16:31where he'll talk it over
16:32with Barry
16:33and Chris McCourt.
16:35Well, guys,
16:35it's great to see you.
16:36First thing I have to say
16:38is what an amazing find.
16:40That silver bar,
16:41the only thing I can say
16:42is bravo,
16:43and it's really
16:44got me buzzing.
16:47It's Barry and Scott's
16:48first face-to-face meeting
16:49since they met
16:50at Barry's lab
16:51in Cape Cod
16:52six weeks ago,
16:53and Scott
16:54has important news
16:56to share.
16:57I found the fort
16:58in southern Madagascar
16:59where the Portuguese
17:01Templars were marooned,
17:03so they definitely
17:04had a presence
17:04in southern Madagascar,
17:06but Kidd also sailed
17:08around the Horn
17:09and landed at Talir.
17:11He was in southern
17:12Madagascar as well,
17:13so we got Kidd
17:14in southern Madagascar,
17:15we've got the Portuguese
17:16Templars there,
17:17maybe that's where
17:18the silver bar came from.
17:19Your point is well taken,
17:22but I just think
17:23there's too much
17:23of a gap there.
17:25Okay.
17:25Time-wise.
17:27Everything that Kidd did
17:28for the most part
17:30was on record.
17:31There's very little
17:32that we don't know
17:34about Kidd
17:34because of all the
17:35people that were with him.
17:38My guess,
17:39and it's just a guess,
17:41is that Kidd was paid
17:43in gold and silver bars
17:45when he was in India.
17:47The silver bar
17:47could have come
17:48from India.
17:49That's the most plausible
17:50explanation of everything.
17:52Two of the main ships
17:53that he captured,
17:54the Ruparel
17:54and the Kuida Merchant,
17:56were Indian ships,
17:57and they were coming
17:57from India
17:58when he captured them.
18:01Okay.
18:02One thing I definitely know
18:03is that the Portuguese
18:04Templars established
18:05a settlement
18:06in Goa, India
18:07in 1510.
18:08Kidd was there,
18:09and I think there could be
18:11a connection
18:11between the two.
18:12You're going to need
18:13to get to India.
18:13Yeah.
18:16Could the Medieval
18:20Knights Templar
18:21be somehow connected
18:22to the 17th century
18:24pirates of the Indian Ocean?
18:26Explorers Barry Clifford
18:27and Scott Walter
18:29are looking for answers.
18:31Answers they believe
18:32will lead them
18:33to one of the greatest
18:34lost treasures
18:35of history.
18:40In Madagascar,
18:43Barry's team continues
18:44to explore a wreck
18:45they believe
18:46is the fiery dragon.
18:50Now they're closing in
18:51on what they think
18:52is the ship's cargo hold.
18:57This is where
18:58the ivory figure
18:59of Christ was discovered,
19:00and hopes are high
19:02for another breakthrough.
19:04But we don't know
19:05what we're going to find.
19:06God knows it could be anything.
19:09Lead diver Chris McCourt
19:10soon returns
19:11with a new find.
19:14Whoa.
19:16Good job, you guys.
19:17It's beautiful, yeah.
19:20It's delicate porcelain
19:22of a type made in China
19:24in the 17th century
19:25for export to Europe.
19:28I felt it in my hand
19:29I knew it was a cup,
19:30and then I brought it up
19:31out of the mud
19:31into the light,
19:33and it was gorgeous.
19:34After 300 years
19:40of being in a shipwreck,
19:42to find something
19:42that's intact like that
19:43I think is just
19:44absolutely miraculous.
19:53Chris heads back
19:54to the site,
19:55eager to see
19:56what he'll find next.
19:57Roger that.
20:06Stand by.
20:12It's very fragile.
20:14It looks like
20:14a monk's head.
20:16I found that
20:24in my first five minutes
20:25and tested.
20:27This really,
20:28really is beautiful.
20:30I've never seen
20:31anything like it.
20:32It looks religious
20:33to me.
20:35Depicting a monk.
20:38Absolutely beautiful.
20:39Pretty amazing.
20:40I really have a feeling
20:42there's more to this.
20:44There's more to this.
20:47The team believes
20:48the monk's head
20:49is a religious artifact,
20:51but its purpose
20:52and where it came from
20:53are a mystery.
20:59I'm going to
21:00send that to London
21:03to an expert
21:04who will be able
21:06to determine
21:07the origin
21:08of this thing.
21:11Is this another relic
21:12from the Knights Templar?
21:14Barry hopes
21:14to find out.
21:22Meanwhile,
21:23Scott's in Goa
21:24on the west coast
21:25of India.
21:26For the last six weeks,
21:28he's been tracing
21:28the journeys
21:29of the notorious pirate
21:31Captain Kidd
21:32and the Knights Templar.
21:34And both ancient trails
21:36have led him here.
21:38In the 1490s,
21:43Portuguese navigators
21:44discovered a new
21:45southern route
21:46around Africa.
21:48Eastern trade routes
21:49promised great riches.
21:51But first,
21:52they needed a stronghold
21:53in the Indian Ocean.
21:55So, in 1510,
21:57they seized the port
21:58of Goa
21:59in India.
22:02The king of Portugal
22:04placed his new colony
22:05under the authority
22:06of the Portuguese Templars.
22:10Is this where pirates
22:11and Templars
22:12crossed paths
22:13once again?
22:15We know that Captain Kidd
22:16was raiding ships
22:18off the coast of India.
22:19Now, this is just
22:20a theory right now.
22:21But what if
22:22some of those ships
22:23were Portuguese Templar ships?
22:26And maybe that's where
22:27Captain Kidd got his hands
22:29on the metal ingot.
22:30And maybe that's how
22:31the Templar treasure
22:32got to Madagascar.
22:37Captain Kidd
22:38had been commissioned
22:39by the English Crown
22:40to sail to the Indian Ocean
22:42to hunt pirates.
22:45But,
22:46after months
22:46without success,
22:48Kidd turned pirate himself,
22:50attacking rich merchant ships
22:52off India's west coast.
22:54In 1697,
22:59he captured a vessel
23:00called the Mary.
23:02And Kidd's crew
23:03terrorized and robbed
23:04the passengers,
23:06including five
23:07Portuguese monks.
23:09Once Kidd and his men
23:10were back aboard
23:11the adventure galley,
23:12the pirates released
23:13the Mary
23:14and set the monks
23:15free.
23:17Days later,
23:19two Portuguese warships
23:20were sent in pursuit
23:21of Kidd and his men.
23:24Kidd managed to sink
23:27one ship
23:28and escape,
23:29keeping much
23:30of the booty
23:30stolen from the Mary.
23:34Did his loot
23:35include the large ingot
23:37Barry found
23:37on what he believes
23:39is the wreck
23:39of Kidd's ship?
23:45Scott's looking for clues.
23:47He heads for the former
23:49heart of Portuguese
23:50Templar power
23:51in Old Goa.
23:52We're at a
23:54monastery
23:54dedicated to
23:56St. Augustine
23:56and in its time
23:58was probably
23:58one of the wealthiest
23:59areas in all of Goa.
24:01This is a beautiful
24:03example of architecture
24:05of the Portuguese
24:06Templars.
24:08This thing would have been
24:09overshadowing
24:10everything in this area.
24:13Its size,
24:14its beauty,
24:15the detail.
24:16I would like to have
24:18seen it in all
24:18its glory.
24:20Now,
24:21it's rubble.
24:25But,
24:26amid the ruins,
24:28Scott sees
24:29some familiar signs.
24:32Skull and crossbones
24:34right here.
24:35That's the
24:36unmistakable
24:37logo of the pirates.
24:39It's also
24:39an unmistakable
24:40symbol of
24:41the Templars,
24:42certainly the
24:43Portuguese Templars.
24:45This is great.
24:47This place is a
24:48treasure trove.
24:50Pirates,
24:51skull and crossbones,
24:52Masonic pavement.
24:55It's just amazing.
24:56It's just rich.
24:58And,
24:58look,
24:59there's one,
25:00two,
25:00three
25:00crosses of Lorraine,
25:02symbol of the
25:03bloodline families,
25:04symbol of the
25:05Templars.
25:06Once again,
25:07Scott seems to be
25:08surrounded by
25:09evidence of the
25:10Templars' presence.
25:12But what he sees next
25:13may break the
25:14investigation
25:15wide open.
25:17Okay,
25:18Barry's silver bar
25:19has got the
25:19triple tau,
25:20right?
25:23Look at that.
25:25Ha!
25:26That's a
25:27triple tau.
25:29There's two
25:29triple tau's
25:30just like the
25:31symbol on
25:32Barry's silver bar.
25:33This is big.
25:34This is big.
25:36This is huge.
25:41Barry's silver bar
25:43has got the
25:43triple tau,
25:44right?
25:45Look at that.
25:47Ha!
25:50Historian
25:50Scott Walter
25:51is in
25:52Goa,
25:52India,
25:53looking for
25:53clues to
25:54explain what
25:55he and the
25:55team believes
25:56is a mysterious
25:57connection
25:58between the
25:58Knights Templar
25:59and 17th
26:00century pirates.
26:02And he's
26:03just made
26:04a major
26:05discovery.
26:06That's a
26:06triple tau.
26:08There's two
26:08triple tau's
26:09just like the
26:10symbol on
26:11Barry's silver
26:11bar.
26:12This tells me
26:14with all this
26:15other symbolism
26:15that the
26:16Portuguese Templars
26:17have something
26:18to do with
26:18that silver
26:19bar.
26:19And to me,
26:20this is
26:20evidence of it.
26:21Scott's eager to
26:25share his discovery
26:26with historian
26:27Mark Coltco-Rivera
26:28in New York.
26:31Two weeks ago,
26:33Scott met with
26:34Mark and asked
26:35him to decipher
26:36the strange
26:36markings on a
26:37100-pound metal
26:38ingot, an
26:40underwater relic
26:41Barry Clifford
26:42unearthed, and is
26:43convinced is part of
26:44Captain Kidd's
26:45lost treasure.
26:46It is a Masonic
26:50symbol, but it
26:51also has a
26:52connection to the
26:54medieval Knights
26:55Templar.
27:00Scott, how are you?
27:02Well, I'm good.
27:03I'm hot.
27:04I'm in Goa, India.
27:06Now, I know this was
27:07on Portuguese
27:08Templar colony, but
27:09I'm seeing Templar
27:10symbolism all over
27:11the place.
27:12In addition to that,
27:13I found something
27:14that you'll find
27:14very interesting.
27:15Do you remember
27:16that triple tau
27:17that was on
27:17that metal ingot?
27:19Sure.
27:20I found it here
27:21in Goa, in a
27:22monastery, on a
27:23grave slab, near
27:24the altar.
27:25Really?
27:27It makes
27:28perfect sense.
27:30You're in a
27:31former Portuguese
27:32colony.
27:32There were
27:33Templars there.
27:34And the triple
27:35tau, the temple
27:37of the Temple
27:38of Jerusalem
27:39and the
27:40Portuguese
27:40Templars.
27:42Okay.
27:42Well, this is
27:43really interesting
27:43because there's
27:44definitely a
27:45connection here.
27:46But tell me a
27:47little bit, what
27:47were the Templars
27:48doing in Goa?
27:49I mean, how did
27:49this whole thing
27:50start?
27:51Okay.
27:53The entire
27:54age of
27:55exploration done
27:57by Portugal
27:58was a
28:00Templar
28:00production.
28:01Now, Goa
28:03generated an
28:04immense amount
28:04of wealth
28:05for Portugal.
28:07Spice trade
28:07was immensely
28:08profitable
28:09and other goods
28:10as well.
28:11Then, certainly
28:12by the early
28:121700s, things
28:14had become a
28:15lot less
28:16hospitable.
28:18There were
28:19epidemics,
28:20there was
28:21warfare with
28:22the surrounding
28:22populations in
28:23India.
28:24so what they
28:26started doing
28:27was pulling
28:27things out.
28:29The Portuguese
28:29Templars
28:30started taking
28:31the gold,
28:32the silver,
28:33the arch treasure
28:34and they started
28:35shipping them out
28:35to take them
28:36back to Portugal.
28:37And a lot
28:38of the ships
28:39that they loaded
28:40down with treasure
28:42made it.
28:43But not
28:44their biggest
28:45ship.
28:46Really?
28:46laden with gold
28:52and silks
28:53and spices
28:54and pearls
28:55and jewelry
28:55of all sorts
28:56never makes it
28:57back to Portugal.
28:59Is that right?
28:59Every bit of it
29:02lost.
29:04Look, I've got
29:05a few more days
29:05here.
29:06I'm going to see
29:06what I can find
29:07out.
29:08Thanks for all
29:08your help.
29:09I appreciate it.
29:10I'll catch you
29:10later, okay?
29:13Mark's information
29:14has provided
29:15Scott with a new
29:16lead.
29:17It's time to
29:18investigate the
29:19Nosa Senora
29:20de Cabo.
29:24All you have to
29:25do is look out
29:25here and everything
29:26makes sense.
29:27You can see
29:28where the wealth
29:29of the Portuguese
29:30Templars was
29:31concentrated here
29:32in the churches
29:33here in Old
29:34Goa and in
29:35the 1700s when
29:37they finally decided
29:38that they had to
29:38get out of here
29:39they would have
29:40just loaded up
29:41their ships right
29:42on the river
29:43here and then
29:43just sail five
29:45miles to the
29:45ocean and they
29:46were gone.
29:52Scott has an
29:53idea about where
29:54he can find more
29:55info on the
29:56Nosa.
30:00I'm heading into
30:01the archives here
30:01in Goa to see
30:03if I can find
30:03evidence in the
30:05Portuguese period
30:06under the customs
30:07section anything
30:09about the Nasa ship
30:10and its cargo.
30:12I mean this is the
30:12time period when
30:14everything was taken
30:15out of the churches,
30:16all the wealth was
30:17loaded aboard these
30:18Portuguese ships and
30:20sent off.
30:20Let's see what we
30:34can find.
30:35So what I'm seeing
30:57here is these are
31:00manifest records for
31:01ships that are coming
31:03in and leaving Goa.
31:06The records start in
31:07the late 1600s right
31:09up to about 1720 and
31:11then they're gone for
31:12four years.
31:13There's nothing.
31:15And then after that
31:16the records pick up
31:17and they're detailed.
31:18The question is why
31:19are those years missing?
31:21Well these are the
31:21years that the Templars
31:22were taking things out
31:23of here and apparently
31:25they didn't want anyone
31:26to know.
31:27And that actually makes
31:28a lot of sense.
31:29So the fact that I'm not
31:30finding any record tells
31:32me everything.
31:33The NASA was the
31:34biggest treasure ship.
31:35It had the biggest load.
31:37It had disappeared into
31:38history.
31:38I want to know what
31:39happened to that thing.
31:47Scott has traveled to
31:48Goa, India where he's
31:50now on the trail of the
31:51Nosa Senora de Cabo.
31:54He believes it was a
31:55Portuguese Templar
31:56gallium shipping treasure
31:57back home to Lisbon.
31:59But it never reached its
32:01destination.
32:03And in the custom archives
32:04there's no trace of the ship
32:06or its valuable cargo.
32:10Scott arranges a call with
32:12team historian Chris McCourt
32:13in Madagascar to take stock
32:16of this new information.
32:18Hey Scott, how's it going
32:19over there?
32:20Well it's going great.
32:21But I want to know how
32:22you're doing.
32:23Have you found anything else?
32:24We're doing really well.
32:25One of the objects that we
32:27found this morning is a
32:28small sculpture of a stone
32:31of a monk's head.
32:33Carved in stone.
32:35Sounds really interesting.
32:36Great job.
32:37Yeah.
32:38Things in Goa are coming
32:39pretty well for me too.
32:40I have to say.
32:41You remember the triple
32:42towel on the bar?
32:46Yeah, how could I forget
32:47that?
32:48I found it on a grave slab.
32:51The triple towel is here in
32:52Goa.
32:53That's amazing.
32:54You can't.
32:54That's really amazing.
32:55So I talked to a guy named
32:57Mark Polka Rivera and he
32:59told me a really interesting
33:00story about this amazing
33:02treasure ship.
33:03In 1721 the Portuguese
33:05Templars took all of their
33:07wealth out of the churches
33:09and they loaded it onto this
33:10ship.
33:11It was absolutely packed and
33:13then it disappeared.
33:14It was called the Nasa
33:15Senora de Cabo.
33:17Oh, I've heard of that.
33:18You have?
33:21You do know that ship?
33:23Yeah, it was captured in
33:251721 by one of the most
33:27successful pirates during the
33:28Golden Age of Piracy and his
33:30name was Oliver Lemus.
33:35As the Nasa sailed across the
33:37Indian Ocean, she was caught in a
33:39violent storm.
33:41The captain ditched the heavy
33:42cannons and took refuge at the
33:44island of Reunion.
33:45As the crew made repairs, the
33:48giant galleon lay disarmed in the
33:49last night, a sitting duck for
33:52pirates.
33:53When word of the Gnosis
33:55plenty reached French pirate
33:57Olivier Lavasseur, a.k.a.
33:59LeBouze, he immediately set sail
34:02from his base on Isle St.
34:04Marine, determined to claim her as his
34:07prize.
34:08LeBouze and his men boarded the ship
34:10and stole more than $100 million
34:13in gold, diamonds, and religious
34:16artifacts, all without firing a
34:19Satan shot.
34:22One of the great treasures that was
34:24taken from the ship was called the
34:26Flaming Cross of Goa.
34:27The Flaming Cross of Goa.
34:30300 pounds, solid gold cross.
34:33What?
34:33A king of diamonds and tools.
34:35Now, yeah, this is a thing of
34:36dreams, you notice?
34:38And it apparently took three of his
34:40men to carry the cross off.
34:43I can't believe that.
34:44That's, that's unreal.
34:46What do you think?
34:47Could it still be out there
34:48somewhere?
34:49Well, it's, it's a very good
34:51possibility.
34:52The last place that he was seen
34:54was 1722.
34:55sailing out of, of, of the harbor
34:58here on St. Marie.
35:01For six weeks, Barry's team has
35:04been diving shipwrecks off the
35:05coast of Madagascar, hunting for
35:07clues to connect the Knights Templar
35:09to pirates.
35:11But has the key to the mystery been
35:13right next to them, on land, the
35:15entire time?
35:18The team began with just one clue,
35:21an ivory figure of Christ found on a
35:24pirate shipwreck.
35:26And one theory, that it was once part
35:29of a Templar horde of riches.
35:33Then, Barry found what he believes is a
35:35piece of Captain Kidd's treasure, an
35:38ingot with Templar markings.
35:40And the team had a second theory.
35:43That Captain Kidd was on a secret mission to
35:46recover Templar treasure.
35:48Now, a completely new theory connecting pirates and
35:58Templars has emerged.
36:01Scott believes a Portuguese Templar ship, the
36:04Nosa Senora de Cabo, sailing from Goa, was attacked by a pirate called
36:09Naboo's.
36:11He returned with his loot to Isle St. Marie, and his
36:14Hall of Templar treasure, including the Flaming Cross of Goa, may still lie
36:20buried on pirate island.
36:21Well, if there's a holy grail of treasure from Goa, it's the Flaming Cross of Goa.
36:29Maybe Barry and his team is sitting right on top of it.
36:33And if found, it would be one of the greatest archaeological and historical finds ever.
36:39Explorers Scott Wolter and Barry Clifford are trying to unwrap a mystery that directly connects
36:51the Medieval Knights Templar to 17th century pirates.
36:55And if they can solve it, it may just lead them to the greatest Hall of Lost Treasure in history.
37:03In Madagascar, Barry and project historian Chris McCourt are on their way to
37:09investigate what's known locally as Pirate Island.
37:14It's just a few hundred yards from where they've been diving pirate wrecks for the last six weeks.
37:21But now, they have a new lead.
37:24The team believes that nearly 300 years ago, French pirate Olivier Lavasseur, a.k.a. Laboo's,
37:31buried sacred Templar treasure on this very same island.
37:36And this is where Laboo's?
37:38Yeah.
37:39Hung out.
37:39He was here in 1722.
37:42That was the last time his ship was seen.
37:43So, Laboo's is treasure.
37:46It could be here.
37:48Laboo's moves to Madagascar, sets up a place on Pirate Island,
37:52and he became the wealthiest, most successful pirate ever.
37:56But the last place that he was thought to have had his treasure was Pirate Island.
38:05After looting the Gnosis Signora de Cabo, a ship the team believes was laden with Templar treasure,
38:12Laboo's retired to a nearby island, a fantastically wealthy man.
38:16But his criminal past soon caught up with him.
38:22Captured by the French, he was taken away in chains.
38:25And a decade after stealing what may have been the greatest Templar treasure of all, the Flaming Cross of Goa,
38:34he was convicted of piracy and sentenced to death.
38:38As his hands were tied, and the hangman's noose was placed around his neck,
38:46Laboo's threw a piece of parchment into the crowd,
38:49covered in a mysterious pirate code.
38:54Laboo's dared the crowd to solve his code and find his secret horde,
38:59shouting,
38:59My treasure for he who understands.
39:04Seconds later,
39:06the last man to know the location of the Flaming Cross of Goa
39:09was dead.
39:16Ever since the moment that he was hanged,
39:18people have been looking for that treasure,
39:19nobody's ever found anything.
39:21Using that map that he threw out to the crowd.
39:25Mathematicians, people that do crossword puzzles,
39:27people that are really into iconography,
39:29nobody's ever been able to locate it,
39:31which is really exciting for me.
39:34You know, Laboo's had almost a million pounds sterling,
39:37and he was captured without a penny.
39:40What did he do with it?
39:44Barry and Chris press uphill into the dense jungle,
39:47looking for clues on the tiny island Laboo's once called home.
39:54All right, check this out.
39:56This is the deep spot in the harbor right here,
39:58so this would have been a perfect place to have put the cannon.
40:02It's a flat area.
40:04It's really...
40:06That's the perfect place to build a house?
40:08Really, yeah.
40:09It's totally laid out and nice.
40:11This is the spot to investigate.
40:13That's for sure.
40:18Chris!
40:19Yeah.
40:19Come here.
40:21There's a deep, deep hole here.
40:27There's actually three very deep holes.
40:31Yeah.
40:32If somebody went to a lot of effort to dig these...
40:35You know, why would anybody dig a tunnel in the middle of this island?
40:39It would have been a safe place to have hid their stuff.
40:46We have to come back here with our equipment.
40:48Yeah.
40:49Have the archaeologists do a survey.
40:52After a six-week worldwide investigation,
40:55the Pirate Templar Trail has led Barry, Chris, and the team to this spot.
41:02Could they be standing just feet from an incredible haul of lost Templar treasure,
41:07buried here by one of history's most infamous pirates?
41:12You never know what you're going to find.
41:13You just never know.
41:14I would hate to say no to anything at this point.
41:22We know that Babuze was here,
41:25and he had more treasure than all of the pirates in the Caribbean come on.
41:30What did he do with it?
41:31Might be right underneath you.
41:32Yeah.
