00:00Portugal, Southwest Europe.
00:11Historian Scott Walter is on a mission to unlock the secrets of one of history's most notorious groups, the Knights Templar.
00:21Portugal is absolutely one of the hotspots of Templar activity,
00:27and it happens to be one of the hotspots for a very long time.
00:30I mean, the Templars existed in Portugal in the 1120s.
00:35Scott believes there's a link between the Knights Templar and the renegade pirates of the 17th century.
00:43He's teamed up with renowned underwater explorer Barry Clifford
00:47to uncover the origins of a mysterious Templar ivory Christ statue found on a pirate shipwreck in the Indian Ocean.
00:56I hope I find some more evidence that ties Barry's Christ figure found in Madagascar here to the Iberian Peninsula.
01:05Two weeks ago, Scott met Barry in his Cape Cod lab to examine the ivory Christ statue.
01:11That's been on a long journey that's spent at least 300 years underwater.
01:16All right, I'm blown away.
01:19Determined to find answers, Scott embarked on a global treasure hunt.
01:24This dates back to the time of the Templars.
01:26How did it get on the bottom of the ocean in Madagascar?
01:30Scott followed the Templar trail in Israel, tracing the Christ figurine to the seaport town of Acre,
01:36and now believes the Knights took it with them, along with an immense treasure hoard,
01:42when they were forced out of the Holy Land in 1291.
01:46During the final siege of Acre, they used these tunnels.
01:503,000 of the Knights escaped, maybe even down this passageway, right here to the sea.
01:58Now, Scott's research has turned up a clue that links the Christ figure to Portugal.
02:04I have found an ivory Christ that looks a lot like Barry's Christ.
02:10First of all, we've got the hair part in the middle, the curly locks, the head tilted to the left.
02:16The detail of the ribs coming through the skin is really close.
02:20The emaciated look of the body is almost exactly the same.
02:24And the thing that I love, they're both made of ivory.
02:27All of it seems to match.
02:29But the most interesting thing, for me, it's out of the Iberian Peninsula.
02:35I'm guessing it's here in Portugal.
02:38100 miles northeast of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.
02:44Scott's first stop is on the outskirts of the city of Tamar.
02:49I'm going to a castle built by the Portuguese Templars in 1171.
02:55It was one of eight castles he built along the front lines, this river, to defend against the attacking Moors from the south, whose goal was to take the city of Tamar.
03:09An elite military order, the Knights Templar were sworn to protect religious pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land in the 12th century.
03:18Legend has it, they discovered unimaginable riches buried beneath King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem.
03:26With strongholds across Europe, the Templars set up base in Portugal, where they were on the front line in a religious war between the forces of Christianity and the Moors.
03:37Muslims from North Africa, who had controlled the region for centuries.
03:43It was a war they helped to win, ending in the Christian reconquest of Portugal.
03:50We're coming up on the castle.
03:52You can see the tower, the turrets, and the Templars could look out over the river and to those hills, where they expected the Moors to line those hills ready to attack.
04:03This was the perfect strategic position for the Templars.
04:11Because of the Templars' experience fighting the Moors in the Holy Land for centuries, they became a valuable military asset to the Kingdom of Portugal.
04:19Scott's here to meet with local historian, Manuel Gondra.
04:27Manuel?
04:29Yes?
04:30How are you doing?
04:31Oh, very well.
04:32Thank you, and you?
04:33I'm doing great.
04:34I have something for you, and I'm hoping maybe you can shed some light.
04:37There's an artifact that I've been researching.
04:40A carving of Christ made of ivory that came off a shipwreck from Madagascar.
04:46There's some people that believe this could be related to the Templars.
04:51Which Templars?
04:54Because it was very common to have these images here in Portugal since the second part of the 16th century.
05:02But folks about Templars and the history of Templars in 1307, they were persecuted elsewhere, not in here.
05:13In Portugal, there were Templars who lived for more than 500 years.
05:18Really?
05:21By the early 14th century, the Templars' wealth and power was at its height across Europe.
05:27King Philip IV of France feared they were in a position to overthrow his monarch and used rumors of strange secret rituals, including the mocking of Christ, to arrest the Templar knights on charges of blasphemy and heresy.
05:44On Friday the 13th, 1307, their grand master was arrested and later burned alive, and the surviving knights became hunted fugitives.
05:59But Portugal offered the knight's sanctuary, in return for defending the country from Islamic domination by the Moors.
06:08A faction of the Templars renamed themselves the Order of Christ and went on to spearhead Portugal's great age of discovery.
06:16In the 1400s, the Order's ships blazed a trail across the world's oceans, mapping the Atlantic, the coast of Africa, and beyond.
06:31That's interesting, most people say, well look, the Templars were done after 1307.
06:37In Portugal, that's absolutely not true.
06:39No, not true.
06:40Well that's amazing.
06:41So let me ask you this, do you think it's a reasonable possibility that the Portuguese Templars could have been to Madagascar and that this is evidence to support that?
06:53Yes.
06:55Well Manuel, this has been eye-opening to say the least.
06:58I really appreciate all your expertise.
07:00You've given me a lot to think about.
07:02But thank you so much.
07:03That's all.
07:05I think we've hit the jackpot.
07:07We have had a major turn.
07:10I'm excited.
07:11I am really excited.
07:15And Scott delves deeper, to find a link between the Portuguese Templars and the island of Madagascar.
07:21Where Barry Clifford and his team are also working to unlock the connection between the Knights Templar and 17th century pirates.
07:36Their expedition is based on the island of Isle St. Marie.
07:39One of its inlets was a notorious 17th century pirate haven known as Pirate Bay.
07:45Here, the remains of five ships from the golden age of piracy have lain undisturbed for 300 years.
07:55Barry is convinced that the key to the mystery lies on one of these wrecks waiting to be discovered.
08:03It's well known that the Templars were very serious mariners and had a navy and they actually flew the skull and crossbones a long, long time before Captain Kidd.
08:15We're finding unprecedented artifacts here.
08:19This is a dream come true and, you know, we've had a lot of work to get to this point.
08:23Now is when the mystery starts to get unraveled.
08:27Last week, Barry uncovered yet another artifact he believes could point to a link.
08:33Oh my god.
08:37Cross.
08:39That's a Templar cross.
08:40Is that real?
08:41It's real.
08:43That's incredible.
08:45With the cross at the forefront of his mind, Barry is now investigating a wreck he believes is the Adventure Galley.
08:53The flagship of the infamous pirate, Captain Kidd.
08:56There's only so many large ships in this little tiny area.
09:01And Kidd's ship was one of the three major vessels in this area or in the careening spot.
09:08I'm going to throw this piece of brain coral right where Captain Kidd's ship is.
09:13Like that.
09:14That's where Captain Kidd's ship is.
09:15Captain William Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates ever to sail the seven seas.
09:29Legendary for burying treasure, Kidd inspired the pirate myths that survive today.
09:36He commanded the ultimate pirate ship, the Adventure Galley.
09:43Equipped with 34 cannons and fitted with sails and oars for propulsion, she could outgun and outmaneuver enemy ships with ease.
09:51It was on this ship that Kidd patrolled the Indian Ocean, plundering merchant vessels for gold, spices and jewels.
10:05But after years at sea, the Adventure Galley was falling apart.
10:10After arriving in the pirate stronghold of Isle Saint Marie, Captain Kidd scuttled his ship.
10:16Stripping it of everything valuable before it sank.
10:25But Barry's not so sure the pirates took all the treasure off the ship.
10:30Based on old maps and pieces of burnt wood his team found on the sea floor, Barry is convinced this is the site of the wreck.
10:38The Adventure Galley was sinking badly.
10:40And Kidd took the ship and he drove it up into the careening spot, which is the only spot in the harbor where you can get a vessel up onto the beach.
10:53So when the ship sank, the stern of the ship goes down.
10:57So this is where Captain Kidd's cabin would be on the stern of the ship.
11:02This is where I want to dig. You know, there's going to be a lot of clues on the ship.
11:13Divers down.
11:15Diver one and two. Let me know when you reach bottom.
11:18Diver one and two.
11:19Diver one and two.
11:20Diver one and two.
11:23Three hundred years after sinking, all that's left of what the team believes is the Adventure Galley is a sixty-foot long pile of exposed ballast stones.
11:33Stones held in the ship's hull to keep it stable at sea.
11:43Barry believes he knows where the stern is.
11:45But the visibility is making it difficult to locate what's left of the wreck
12:06We should be going right over the top of it down let me know when you see something
12:15Barry heads for where he thinks kids cabin would be right over the top of the adventure galley
12:25I think if there's very treasure anywhere it's right here
12:29And as he delicately digs the area he believes was once captain kids cabin
12:35What the f*** is that?
12:42You're not going to believe this
12:43I found another artifact
12:47Roger that diver one that's fantastic news
12:59I located this on the adventure galley
13:03It was deep in the ballast pile
13:06Could be a navigational divider
13:10Barry's found a divider a 17th century navigational tool vital for plotting a ship's course at sea
13:17It's exactly the kind of instrument captain kid would keep in his cabin
13:23And a further sign that kid left more on this ship when it sank than he let on
13:28Maybe even his treasure
13:31We've got so much work to do that this is only the beginning
13:35But it's a good clue
13:37It's a really good clue
13:38And we'll be exploring the wreck more carefully tomorrow
13:43Who knows what you're going to find here
13:46It's just limitless the potential of what this ship will produce
13:50Explorers Barry Clifford and Scott Walter are trying to find out if 17th century pilots are directly connected to the medieval Knights Templar
14:06In Madagascar Barry's looking for treasure and clues on what he suspects is the shipwreck of the legendary pirate Captain Kidd
14:23I found another artifact
14:25This is only the beginning
14:27Meanwhile in Portugal
14:33Scott's investigating the Knights Templar
14:37And he's already learned some groundbreaking information
14:40After the put down of the Knights Templar in 1307
14:46They existed in Portugal
14:48And all they did was change their name to the Order of Christ
14:51And they continued on for at least 500 more years until the middle of the 19th century
14:57Portugal has a long and rich tradition of exploring the seas
15:02And they were going off to ports all around the world during the Age of Exploration
15:07Under the banner, under the name of the Order of Christ
15:11Maybe, just maybe, they made it to Madagascar
15:15Scott has been tracing the path of what the team thinks is a precious Templar artifact
15:21An ivory figurine of Christ that Barry found on a pirate wreck in Madagascar
15:26Scott believes it may have originated here in Portugal
15:32The question is, was it part of a larger Templar treasure
15:38After the Templars fled the Holy Land, they crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Europe
15:44But when Philip IV drove them from his land, legend suggests seven Templar ships put to sea
15:53Carrying their vast treasure
15:56No one knows where they went
15:58Could it be their riches came to the ancient city of Tamar
16:04A city filled with a network of underground tunnels
16:08An ideal spot to hide treasure
16:12The idea of tunnels running underneath the city here in Tamar
16:16That's not a surprise at all
16:18I would expect that, classic Templar activity
16:20It would probably start up at the castle
16:23And then run right through here into this church
16:26The Santa Maria da Alaval church
16:31Was the spiritual home of the Templar Order of Christ in Portugal
16:35As Scott looks for possible clues
16:40He notices an inconsistency in the flagstones near the altar
16:44So if you look at this slab
16:46You can tell clearly that it's been cut in around the previously existing stones
16:51It's at a strange orientation
16:53It doesn't fit with the other stones in this church
16:55It's the only one that has this funny angle to it
16:59Scott has a simple but effective test to see if this piece of stone is covering any secrets
17:06There's something underneath here
17:08Look at this, the water is draining away
17:15There's a void underneath here
17:16So this could be the entrance to a tunnel system
17:20That leads all the way up to the Templar castle on the top of the hill
17:24There's something of great importance right here
17:27To learn more about the Templars
17:30Scott is going to have to go underground
17:33There's no doubt that there's more secrets literally underneath the city of Tomar
17:38So I'm going to keep looking
17:39I want to know more about that
17:425,000 miles away in Madagascar
17:47After a morning dive, Barry Clifford and his team are heading to their makeshift lab
17:54Lead archaeologist John Debray has news about their most intriguing find of the expedition so far
18:02A carving, they believe, is a South Asian Buddha
18:06I really just need to get to the bottom of this
18:09They unearthed the artifact on what Barry suspects is the fiery dragon
18:16The same wreck where Barry found the Christ statue that he believes has links to the Knights Templar
18:22I shouldn't jump to conclusion
18:24But it looks like a little Buddha
18:26If it's of Asian origin
18:28The Buddha could also link to the Templars
18:32Supporting a theory that they were trained by Chinese monks in the 12th century
18:38Hey Barry, you know the head
18:47I got an answer from London
18:49They say definitely not Asian
18:52The face is definitely European
18:54How about that, huh?
18:58That is incredible
18:59The team is shocked
19:01This is like cherubic
19:03But rather than sink their theory
19:05The news opens up a fascinating new link to the Templars
19:10The face is a seraph and is likely to have been carved in Europe in the 17th century
19:17In Christian and Judaic traditions, seraphs are regarded as the highest ranked of all the angels
19:25Occupying an exalted position above God's throne
19:30But other medieval religious groups are thought to have believed they were more than angels
19:37Also said to represent a female deity
19:42Seraphs inspired cult-like devotion for underground heretical sects
19:46Including the Knights Templar
19:49Alternative beliefs such as these
19:53Led to rumors that Templars engaged in secret and bizarre rituals
19:58Directly contradicting the strict teachings of the Catholic Church
20:02It's hard to stop looking at it
20:09It's really gorgeous
20:10This is one of my favorite pieces
20:13I really, I really love that piece
20:15I can only guess today
20:17Of the importance of the piece that we discovered
20:20But my hunch is
20:21We've definitely opened up a new page in history in the Indian Ocean
20:25For Barry and the team
20:27The seraph is a monumental find
20:30If the seraph belonged to the Templars
20:34It might be the vital clue
20:36To lead to their long-lost treasure
20:39In Madagascar
20:48Barry Clifford and his team
20:50Have just received fascinating news
20:53A small, hand-carved wooden seraph
20:56They found on a pirate shipwreck
20:58May be connected to the Knights Templar
21:01A symbol of their underground secretive practices
21:05And it's not long before word of the discovery
21:09Which is Scott Walter in Portugal
21:11I can't believe that the Buddha turned out to be a seraph
21:17I mean, it's a key link in the chain
21:20The Templars, they operated underground
21:22Literally
21:23So, the treasure has to be underground too
21:26In Tamar
21:28Scott is searching for Templar tunnels
21:31In the church of Santa Maria de Oliva
21:34He's discovered a crypt near the altar
21:37But the entrance is sealed by a huge flagstone
21:40Look at this
21:41The water is draining away
21:43There's a void underneath here
21:44Maybe the entrance to the tunnel
21:46That leads up to the castle
21:48Is right here
21:49To try and access the tunnel
21:53Scott heads to the fortified castle
21:55Above the town
21:56Built in the middle of the 12th century
21:59It was another important Templar stronghold in Tamar
22:03And its interior looks eerily familiar to Scott
22:08We're inside the altar of the church
22:14The most sacred part of the building
22:16And this octagonal architecture
22:18Is a replication of the temple
22:21On the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem
22:23At the time of the Crusades
22:25The reason the Dome of the Rock
22:30Was so important to the Templars
22:32And why they replicated it here
22:34Is they believe the Dome of the Rock
22:36Was the original site of King Solomon's Temple
22:39If the Templars buried any treasure in Tamar
22:44This is a likely spot
22:47And Scott has gained access
22:49To the tunnel system's sacred entrance
22:52If I'm going to find any clues at all
22:55Maybe I can find something down here
22:57The world of the Knights Templar
23:01Was steeped in secret rituals
23:03And perhaps the most important ritual
23:05Was the one that initiated a candidate
23:07Into the order
23:08This is the entrance to the initiation chamber
23:11But before entering
23:13You have to pass under
23:14The three-faced figure of a man
23:17The Templars believed
23:18Could see your past
23:19Your present
23:20And your future
23:21And decide if you were worthy
23:23Of becoming a Knight
23:24The candidate would then be blindfolded here
23:27And led through these doors
23:29And down a series of steps
23:31Into the initiation chamber
23:33Down the length of this chamber
23:49Are Templar knights dressed in full regalia
23:53The candidate descends down the seven steps
23:56He passes underneath nine keystones
24:00Said to symbolize the nine levels
24:03That the Knights Templar dug
24:04Underneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem
24:06Where it's believed
24:08At the bottom level
24:09They found the Ark of the Covenant
24:11Once the candidate reaches
24:17The ninth keystone
24:19He stands before these two stones
24:22These stones are then lifted out
24:25And the candidate is lowered down
24:28Into a chamber
24:29Where he's only given bread and water
24:33And he's left for some people say
24:35Up to three days
24:36If at any time the candidate cries out
24:38And asked to be released
24:40He cannot become a member of the order
24:42If the candidate survives
24:44Three days in the chamber
24:46The stones are lifted out
24:48The candidate is brought up
24:50He has now survived the physical challenge
24:52The next challenge is intellectual
24:54He has asked three questions
24:56If he answers them correctly
24:58The blindfold is removed
25:00And he sees that he is standing underneath
25:02The ninth keystone
25:04Symbolic of the sun
25:05And he is now enlightened
25:07And has passed the test
25:10To become a full member
25:11Of the Knights Templar order
25:13If there are any clues
25:16To the location of Lost Templar treasure
25:18Surely they would be at the start
25:21Of this tunnel system
25:22Keep in mind
25:23In Jerusalem
25:24They built underground tunnels there as well
25:27And it wasn't just for military purposes
25:30These tunnels were also used
25:32To store precious valuables
25:33And certainly treasure
25:34These tunnels were a vital part
25:37Of their operation
25:38But on this day
25:42Any clues remain hidden
25:45Could there be Lost Templar riches
25:49Hidden under Tamar
25:50There is no doubt
25:53There is no doubt
25:53That there is more secrets
25:54Literally underneath the city of Tamar
25:57So I am going to keep looking
25:585,000 miles away
26:06In Madagascar
26:07Barry Clifford is also looking
26:11For treasure
26:12His team is excavating
26:14What they believe
26:15Is the Adventure Galley
26:17The former flagship
26:20Of the notorious pirate
26:21Captain Kidd
26:22Barry is investigating
26:25An area he believes
26:27Was once the stern
26:28And could hold
26:30Captain Kidd's cabin
26:31In a cache
26:33Of undiscovered artifacts
26:35So far
26:37Barry's found
26:38A key navigational tool
26:39On the wreck site
26:40Giving strength
26:42To his theory
26:42That there's more treasure
26:44To be found
26:45Barry continues to dig
26:49Into the wreck
26:50Could the cave
26:56Be all that remains
26:57Of Captain Kidd's cabin
26:59Barry wedges himself
27:07Into the space
27:08For a closer look
27:10It's so dark in there
27:13Can't see it
27:14But I can feel it
27:15Suddenly
27:18The cave collapses
27:20Diver one
27:22Diver one
27:22This is topside
27:23Just off the coast
27:39Of Madagascar
27:40Underwater explorer
27:42Barry Clifford
27:43Is looking for evidence
27:45That might link
27:45The pirates
27:46To the Knights Templar
27:48He's diving
27:49On the suspected shipwreck
27:51Of Captain Kidd
27:52The adventure galley
27:54An underwater cave
27:58Has collapsed
27:59On Barry
28:00And he's in a tight spot
28:02Diver one
28:06Diver one
28:07This is topside
28:08Barry is finally able
28:29To free himself
28:30And as the silt settles
28:33He spots something wedged
28:35In amongst the ballast stones
28:37What the f*** is that?
28:48Oh my god
28:49Roger that
28:56Come into the bulkhead
28:57With the artifact
28:58It's a spoon
29:02That's been trapped
29:02In the wreck
29:03For over 300 years
29:05It's more evidence
29:11Suggesting Captain Kidd's
29:12Belongings
29:13Including his treasure
29:14Might be hidden
29:15On this ship
29:16Oh wow
29:18Pretty cool man
29:21If it's what we think
29:24It is
29:25You know
29:25Captain Kidd
29:26Could have
29:27Taken a soup
29:28With it
29:29It's history
29:30It's real history
29:31It's
29:32These are artifacts
29:33Coming off of Captain Kidd's ship
29:35Pirates
29:36Held these things
29:37In their hands
29:37It's
29:39It's
29:40It's the stuff
29:40Of Robert Louis Stevenson
29:42Happening
29:42Right before our eyes
29:44Yeah we're definitely
29:45Just scratching the surface here
29:47I mean it seems like
29:47Every time you
29:48Brush your hand
29:49Along the bottom
29:50Something else appears
29:51It's pretty cool
29:52Barry's team now wonders
29:56Are they close to
29:57Finding Kidd's treasure
29:59And does that treasure
30:01Have anything to do
30:02With the Knights Templar
30:03Meanwhile
30:07In Portugal
30:08Scott Walter
30:10Is investigating
30:11Whether the Templar's treasure
30:13May have once been hidden
30:14In the ancient city
30:15Of Tomar
30:16After examining
30:21A sealed crypt
30:22And an intricate
30:23Tunnel system
30:24Built beneath the city
30:25Scott is once again
30:27Meeting with local historian
30:28Manuel Gondra
30:29Looking for answers
30:31Before the
30:33Second World War
30:35Germans were interested
30:37In Tomar
30:37Germans?
30:39You mean
30:39You're talking about
30:39The Nazis?
30:40Yes
30:40There was a German guy
30:43Called Hermann Schutz
30:45That came here
30:47And he did some research
30:49With the help of
30:50Some Portuguese military men
30:52What was he looking for?
30:53He was
30:54He was after a crypt
30:55He was after a crypt
30:57Yes
30:57He was looking for something
30:59We know that the Templars
31:02Were incredibly wealthy
31:03They certainly had gold
31:05And who knows what else
31:06It makes a lot of sense
31:08That that's what the Nazis
31:09Would have been looking for
31:10Yes
31:11Yes
31:11But they were not
31:13Interested in gold
31:14They were interested
31:15In sacred objects
31:16And power objects
31:18Something like
31:19The Ark of the Covenant
31:20You think the Nazis
31:23Were looking for
31:23The Ark of the Covenant?
31:24Yes
31:25So you think
31:25Indiana Jones
31:26Could be true?
31:28I think so
31:28According to
31:30Ancient scriptures
31:31The Israelites
31:33Built the Ark of the Covenant
31:343,000 years ago
31:36To house the stone tablets
31:38On which the Ten Commandments
31:39Were written
31:40They were stored
31:42In the Temple of Solomon
31:44In Jerusalem
31:45But
31:45After Jerusalem
31:47Was conquered by the Babylonians
31:48In the 6th century BC
31:50The Ark of the Covenant
31:51Vanished
31:52And its whereabouts
31:53Entered the realm
31:54Of legend
31:56In 1933
31:58Hitler's Nazi party
32:00Came into power
32:01In Germany
32:01Alongside their twisted theories
32:05Of racial supremacy
32:07Senior Nazis
32:08Such as SS leader
32:10Heinrich Himmler
32:11Believed that
32:11Legendary artifacts
32:13Including the Ark of the Covenant
32:15Could be unearthed
32:17And made to serve
32:17A new master
32:18Adolf Hitler
32:20Himmler sent teams
32:24Of SS men
32:25Around the world
32:26To seek out
32:27These holy objects
32:28Intending to bring them
32:30Back to Berlin
32:31Where their fabled
32:32Supernatural power
32:33Would be harnessed
32:34To aid the Nazi bid
32:36For world domination
32:38You think the Nazis
32:42Were looking for the Ark of the Covenant
32:43Yes
32:44Here in Tomar
32:44Yes
32:45Do we have any idea
32:46What happened
32:47To whatever it was
32:48They found
32:48No
32:49And after he entered the place
32:51The entrance
32:52Was filled with concrete
32:53So they closed it off
32:56I think so
32:57And they wanted to cover
32:57Their tracks
32:58Essentially
32:58Perhaps
32:59Perhaps
32:59This is amazing stuff
33:01Manuel
33:02You've given me
33:03A lot to think about
33:04Thank you so much
33:05Not at all
33:06When Manuel
33:09When Manuel hit me
33:09With the Nazis
33:10Being in Tomar
33:11And digging
33:12In the churches
33:14And in the castle
33:15Looking for a crypt
33:16I'm like
33:17Wow
33:18If the Nazis were here
33:20They were looking
33:20For something important
33:21If what Manuel
33:23Is suggesting
33:24Is true
33:25It's evidence
33:27That the Templar treasure
33:28Could have passed
33:29Through Portugal
33:29The question is
33:32How did some
33:33Of this fabled treasure
33:34End up in the hands
33:35Of pirates
33:36In Madagascar
33:38Scott Walter
33:45Is investigating
33:46The ancient city
33:47Of Tomar
33:48He's discovered
33:50That after their fall
33:51In 1307
33:52The Knights Templar
33:54Carried on
33:54Under a new name
33:55The Order of Christ
33:57And went on
33:58To play a leading role
34:00In Portugal's
34:01Great voyages
34:01Of exploration
34:02Is it possible
34:05That the Order of Christ
34:06Traveled the world
34:07To carry a Templar treasure
34:09With them
34:09Scott's return
34:14To the church
34:15Of Santa Maria
34:16De Oliva
34:16To search
34:18For more clues
34:20Now this slab
34:23Right here
34:23Is very important
34:24This is
34:25An original
34:26Grave slab
34:27To the first
34:28Grandmaster
34:28Of the Knights Templar
34:29We see
34:30Templar symbolism
34:31All through
34:32This inscription
34:33And what it says here
34:35Here is fraternal
34:36Brother
34:36Galdim
34:38First military master
34:40Of the Order of the Temple
34:42Dated 1233
34:45Founder of the city
34:47Of Tomar
34:48Rest in peace
34:49What's really important
34:52About this church
34:53Is not just that
34:54The first grandmaster
34:55Of the Portuguese Templars
34:56Is buried here
34:57But all 22
34:59Of those first grandmasters
35:00You know just knowing
35:01That there are 22 grandmasters
35:03Buried in this church
35:04Is fascinating
35:06And this church
35:07Was really the epicenter
35:08Of Templar activity
35:09After investigating
35:11After investigating
35:11The grave slabs
35:12On the walls
35:13Of the church
35:14Scott discovers
35:15A headstone
35:16Off the main chapel
35:17I've been through
35:20Every inscription
35:21In this church
35:22The ones
35:22On grave slabs
35:23On the floor
35:24On the walls
35:25On the columns
35:26Every one of them
35:27But this inscription
35:28Here has caught
35:29My attention
35:29Right here
35:30We've got
35:31What looks like
35:32A T
35:32An R
35:33This thing is
35:34Really in tough shape
35:35But we've got
35:36A C here
35:37We've got a U
35:37That's an H
35:39Again it's degraded
35:41And an N
35:42And this is triggering
35:43Something in the back
35:45Of my mind
35:45A name
35:46A name I've heard before
35:48This spelling right here
35:50Is
35:50Looks very much
35:51Like the name
35:52De Cunha
35:53It could be
35:55A very important clue
35:55In 1506
36:00Ocean explorer
36:02Tristan De Cunha
36:03Led an order of Christ
36:04Expedition
36:05To the Indian Ocean
36:06To establish
36:07New trade routes
36:08For the Portuguese crown
36:09This expedition
36:14Marked a key moment
36:15In the order of Christ's history
36:17From protecting
36:18The kingdom's borders
36:19To expanding them
36:22Now
36:24Scott's researching
36:26An ancient Portuguese text
36:27For clues
36:28On where De Cunha sailed
36:29De Cunha
36:31Was an early Portuguese explorer
36:33Who had islands
36:35Named after him
36:35That he discovered
36:36In the southern Atlantic
36:37Basically between
36:39South America and Africa
36:41So that's where I'd heard
36:42The name before
36:43And that tombstone
36:44Tipped me off
36:45And here we have it
36:46In this text
36:47I see Tristan De Cunha
36:49At least three times here
36:51This text
36:53In old Portuguese
36:54Records De Cunha's journey
36:56My Portuguese
36:58Isn't great
36:59But I can fumble
37:00My way through this enough
37:02This name here
37:03Sal Lorenco
37:05Which is
37:06The old name
37:07For Madagascar
37:09There it is
37:10That is Madagascar
37:13And it's right here
37:14Boom
37:15So the record shows
37:18That Tristan De Cunha
37:19Was in Madagascar
37:20Somewhere around 1506
37:22And he had to have been
37:23Sailing under the Portuguese flag
37:25As a member
37:25Of the order of Christ
37:27A Portuguese Templar
37:28He had to be
37:29It's another major clue
37:32Was the ivory Christ statue
37:35Barry found in the Indian Ocean
37:37Which Scott then traced to Portugal
37:39Actually brought to Madagascar
37:42By De Cunha
37:43As secret Templar treasure
37:45You know what
37:46Finding Tristan De Cunha's name
37:49On that grave slab
37:50In that church
37:51Has kickstarted
37:52The whole investigation
37:53Historian Scott Walter
38:01And underwater explorer
38:02Barry Clifford
38:03Have joined forces
38:04To solve a mystery
38:06Connecting the medieval
38:07Knights Templar
38:08To the 17th century
38:10Brotherhood of pirates
38:12And so far
38:15They've made significant progress
38:17In Portugal
38:22Scott has learned
38:23That Tristan De Cunha
38:25A Templar
38:26In a sect known
38:27As the order of Christ
38:29Was the first European
38:31To set foot in Madagascar
38:33You know what
38:35Finding Tristan De Cunha's name
38:37On that grave slab
38:38In that church
38:39Has kickstarted
38:40The whole investigation
38:41Did De Cunha
38:43Bring Templar treasure with him
38:45And did that treasure
38:47End up
38:48In the hands of pirates
38:50As news reaches
38:54Barry and his team
38:55In Madagascar
38:56They are trying
38:58To find out
38:59They're exploring
39:03What they suspect
39:04Is Captain Kidd's ship
39:05The Adventure Galley
39:07For centuries
39:10Kidd has been connected
39:11To legends
39:12Of a vast
39:12Lost treasure
39:13Just like
39:15The Knights Templar
39:16It's been a great day
39:18We've brought some artifacts up
39:20That I think
39:21Everyone will be excited about
39:23The last dive
39:24Is coming back in
39:25In a couple of minutes time
39:26On the final dive
39:30Of the day
39:30Barry's exploring
39:31The area
39:32Where a small cave
39:33Crashed in on him earlier
39:35What do you think
39:37Is it like a rock
39:41Or something
39:42It doesn't feel like
39:44It's too smooth
39:46It's hard
39:52Yeah
39:53Holy
40:04See that
40:08100% so
40:11Could be Templar
40:15Next
40:19On pirate treasure
40:20Of the Knights Templar
40:21Could Captain Kidd
40:23Have been involved
40:24In a highly secretive mission
40:25To get Templar treasure
40:27This is a secret
40:29Coded
40:29Cipher
40:30You're not going to believe this
40:33That is a Templar symbol
40:35We're onto something
40:36Very, very important to it
40:38I see a symbol
40:40That I recognize
40:41It's something called
40:42The Triple Tau
40:43How did a Masonic symbol
40:45Get on this silver bar
40:46If it's what I think it is
40:48It'll be the front page
40:49Of every newspaper
40:50On the wall
40:50But maybe it's Balian
40:53You're not going to believe that
40:54You're not going to show that
40:54You're not going to prove it
40:55That loop
40:56That you're going to be on
40:57It doesn't feel like
40:57Well, Might
40:58disagree
40:59But maybe it's going to be a
40:59Full fire
41:00If it's going to be the å¿«
41:01That don't know
41:02I'll tell you
41:02How did you feel like
41:03Mom
41:16What do you think
41:17The Jopard beer
