00:52This is Phillip Island Raceway.
00:55And this is round one of the 2000 Shell Championship Series.

01:11Oh, look at that.
01:14It is the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix,
01:35and a real favourite among riders and drivers all around the world.
01:39And once again, the peace and tranquillity of Phillip Island is set to be shattered by the V8 supercars.
01:44Hello, I'm Greg Rust.
01:45This is round one of the Shell Championship Series for Season 2000.
01:49And what a year lies ahead.
01:50It's going to be a terrific year.
01:51We're going to all four corners of the country.
01:54In fact, we're going, of course, to the Adelaide 500, as we did last year.
01:57That event, if you can believe it, is going to be even bigger and better when we travel down there in April.
02:01The National Capital 100.
02:03That is a new event on this season's calendar.
02:05Canberra and the race, of course, down around Lake Burley Griffin.
02:08And in between the old and the new Parliament House, that promises to be a ripper.
02:12And it all concludes with the FAI 1000 Classic at Bathurst, Mount Panorama.
02:16And it will go right down to the wire, no doubt, as it did in Season 1999.
02:20Well, during the course of the off-season, our own Barry Sheen has been down here to the island.
02:24He's been here many times before as a commentator, but it's the first time he's been down here as a rider.
02:27But as you had two wins, has that changed your perspective on the island?
02:30Oh, it's a great circuit. It's a real Grand Prix-type circuit.
02:33The thing that really shocked me was how narrow it is.
02:35And for the V8s around here, I can't imagine there's a lot of room.
02:39It's good this year they changed the format.
02:40There's two 45-minute races, compulsory pit stop.
02:44They have to change the tyres, or if they don't change them,
02:46they have to take the wheels off and put the same wheels back.
02:49So it's going to make the old pit crews work pretty hard,
02:52and I think it's going to be very competitive.
02:53Very quickly, we've had four seasons in one day as well, haven't we?
02:56So the weather could be a factor.
02:58Oh, absolutely.
02:59I think Larry Perkins will be quite pleased if it does rain,
03:02because he ruined a set of tyres when he went off behind John Faulkner.
03:05But I think we're going to be in for a real good one.
03:07I can't wait. It's the first race.
03:09Well, there's been plenty happening during the off-season.
03:11Lots of scuttlebutton changes in the paddock area.
03:13And to bring you up to speed on all of them,
03:14here's a report from our own Mark Osler.
03:16It's an all-new look for reigning Bathurst champs Greg Murphy and Stephen Richards.
03:23The former Wins Commodores are now Kmart machines,
03:26and the team has a new owner in Gibson Motorsports commercial manager Gary Dumbrell.
03:31Success in the Shell sprint rounds is top priority in 2000.
03:35When you analyse the results of 1999,
03:37they weren't really that great during the sprint races.
03:39We've been working on that over the break,
03:40and during the year 2000,
03:42we've got to make sure our sprint races are as competitive as everyone else during the year.
03:47Reigning Shell series champion Holden Racing Team
03:50will have Ford drivers seeing red with its new corporate look.
03:53Major backer Mobil remains,
03:55but the factory cars of Craig Lowndes and Mark Scaife
03:57are now predominantly Holden Red.
04:00For rival Ford teams, it's like waving a red flag at a bull.
04:03Well, I mean, we've changed livery, obviously,
04:05but it's been evolution rather than revolution.
04:07The testing's gone really well.
04:09We can't wait to get back into it.
04:10Perkins Engineering has also had a facelift.
04:13The latest VT Commodores are the strongest chassis ever produced by the team.
04:18Combined with sharp new Castrol wall paint,
04:20Larry Perkins and Russell Engel will be hungry to claim
04:22that elusive first Shell series crown.
04:26Ford fans will be hoping for big things from Henry's hot shoes.
04:29At Dick Johnson Racing,
04:31rapid Kiwi Paul Radisic will be joined by Stephen Johnson,
04:34who takes over the famous number 17 Falcon following his father's retirement.
04:38Big shoes to fill,
04:40but Junior denies he's under any added pressure.
04:43I've done five Bathursts now,
04:44and there's no pressure at Bathurst,
04:46there's no pressure anywhere else,
04:47so I'll just continue doing what I'm doing,
04:49and if it's good enough to win at the end,
04:51well, so be it.
04:52Jason Bright's decision to race Indy Lights in the US
04:55has opened the door for Kiwi Craig Baird
04:57at Stone Brothers Racing.
04:59Baird's Pertec Falcon will share garage space
05:01with a new Caltex Ford,
05:03driven by hard-charging Queenslander Tony Longhurst.
05:06Baird is fast and experienced,
05:08but as fellow countryman Paul Radisic discovered last year,
05:11he faces a steep learning curve.
05:13There's a few tracks I've got to learn and get a set-up on,
05:17but we've got a good base with a variety of set-ups from last year,
05:20so I don't see too many problems.
05:24BMW's super-touring champion Paul Morris
05:26is another driver facing a tough season.
05:28The young Queenslander returns to a regular Shell Series drive
05:32for the first time since competing in a Coke Commodore back in 1994.
05:36With his new two-car Commodore team,
05:38Morris is approaching 2000 very much as a learning year.
05:42Now the teams really have a big head start
05:44because of the testing restrictions,
05:46so it's going to be a learning year,
05:47and we just have to finish every race we can
05:49and get as much information as we can.
05:52Audi's super-touring champ Brad Jones
05:54also makes his long-awaited Shell Series debut
05:57at the wheel of an ex-Tony Longhurst Falcon.
06:00The BJR-prepared Aussie male machine could spring a surprise
06:03in the Albury-based team's first year of V8 competition.
06:07I think that being our first year is going to be very tough.
06:11It's the best the series has ever been.
06:13There's only tens of seconds between the front competitors,
06:15but at the end of the day,
06:16I like to think that we can run in the top ten.
06:19Last year's privateer champion Cameron McLean
06:22is eager to take the next step up the ladder.
06:24The ambitious Queenslander has replaced his older EL Falcon
06:27with an ex-Paul Wheel AU
06:29and, after an impressive debut season,
06:32has the big names of the sport firmly in his sights.
06:35HRT and Dixicars are good at the end of the year,
06:37and Stones, you know, they're obviously the goal,
06:40and if we can get up there and mix it with them,
06:41we'll be happy.
06:41We should also make welcome young gun Cameron McConville,
06:46who'll be lining up in the Autopro Commodore this year,
06:49and Stephen Ellery, who did a great job
06:50with Paul Ranisich at Mount Panorama.
06:52He lines up in the super-cheap Autos Falcon.
06:54Well, in qualifying, the defending champion came out blazing
06:57on pole position in the Holden Racing Team Commodore.
07:00The 22-year-old Garth Tander lines up alongside him.
07:03Mark Scaife and Larry Perkins make up the second row of the grid.
07:06Great debut from Tony Longhurst in the Caltechs Falcon,
07:09fifth fastest.
07:10And we go back to Jason Barguana.
07:11Great to see him inside the top ten.
07:13And Glenn Seaton rounds out the ten.
07:14In fact, a happy hunting ground the Islanders have been for him
07:17in the past, and he's hoping to enjoy a win here this weekend.
07:20But right now, Mark Osler is with our pole sitter.
07:24If anyone thought Craig Lowndes might be lacking motivation
07:27after taking three Shell Championship wins,
07:29they'd be very much mistaken.
07:31At Phillip Island, he's not only qualified on pole position,
07:33but he's also set a new qualifying record.
07:36Boy, where's the speed come from?
07:37Well, the guys have done a great job with the cars this year,
07:39and they are the existing cars we had from last year.
07:42This is our test circuit, so we expect it to go well.
07:44Obviously, we've gone beyond our expectations,
07:47obviously gone the best we've ever been down here as well.
07:49So in that respect, we're very, very happy.
07:52But obviously, the racing is to come.
07:54And at the moment, we're just sitting in a comfortable groove,
07:56and hopefully, fingers crossed,
07:59that we can have a great year again.
08:00Now, two 45-minute races.
08:02What sort of tactics does this throw up?
08:03It's a totally new ball game, isn't it?
08:05Well, it is.
08:06Something new for the team.
08:07I think it's fantastic.
08:08The team are part of it.
08:09It's like Bathurst or the 500.
08:11The guys get in there, they've got to do their thing.
08:13And really, it's going to be a team tactic.

08:20making the best possible start for his attempt
08:22to win four championships from four championship starts.

09:08But right now, we're getting set for all the action
09:10from Race 1.
09:11This is Phillip Island,
09:12a fast and flowing circuit,
09:14and one that's a real favourite amongst all the drivers.
09:164.45 kilometres in length.
09:18Craig Lounds, the current lap record holder,
09:20but that could all change here this weekend.
09:22But to show you the inside line around the island,
09:24in fact, the forward inside line,
09:26here's our own Neil Crompton.

09:39Now, the whole idea of the inside line segment this year
09:42is to give you something just a little bit different
09:44from on board the car,
09:45rather than walking and talking.
09:47But I have to apologise.
09:48First of all, I'm in Glen's car,
09:51so I've got to be very, very careful.
09:52But it's incredibly wet all of a sudden.
09:54I've got cold, wet weather tyres.
09:56So if I bend this thing,
09:57I'd better jump off the island.
09:59We're just heading down through Turn 2.
10:01This is, under normal circumstances,
10:04one of the most picturesque circuits
10:05on the Australian Racing Tour.
10:07It is just fantastic.
10:10Round here through Turn 3,
10:11normally taken in third gear,
10:13about 240km.
10:15Very dangerous.
10:16There's a big clomper of trees
10:17and an earthy bank over there.
10:19If you hit that,
10:19you'd know all about it.
10:20Very heavily off the brakes
10:22back to second gear
10:23for Turn 4,
10:24the Honda Hair Pit.
10:25Slowest corner on the track,
10:27about 70 odd k's.
10:28Then you give it a big foot
10:29out the other side,
10:31up to third gear,
10:32to a corner they call Siberia
10:35because it's so far from anywhere.
10:38Third gear, delicate on the throttle,
10:40use all the road on the exit here.
10:43Whoa!
10:44And you can see how slippery it is.
10:46Up to fourth gear,
10:47that was just getting on the paint
10:48on the exit.
10:49Up to fifth gear,
10:50flat through here
10:52and the car really dances
10:53on the way up
10:54to what we call the Hayshed.
10:55About 240 odd k's.
10:57Back to fourth gear
10:59over the top of Lukey Heights.
11:01Got no grip at all here
11:02at the moment.
11:05And then it's a bit of a blind brow.
11:07Hard on the brakes again
11:08back to second gear.
11:10It's a particularly slow corner,
11:12about the same as Turn 4.
11:13So this is now Turn 8,
11:15exiting Lukey Heights.
11:18Turn 9,
11:19a long, long left corner.
11:21Very hard to get the balance
11:22of a car just right
11:23for this corner.
11:25Up to fourth gear,
11:26different drivers
11:26have different techniques.
11:28I prefer to grab fifth
11:29just as I come onto the main straight.
11:31It's a fantastic corner
11:32and a brilliant track.
11:34You come on here
11:34at about 220 odd k's.
11:37Line yourself up
11:38for the big run
11:38down the straight.
11:40You grab sixth gear
11:40just underneath the bridge
11:42and at the bottom
11:42you're doing 270 odd
11:44kilometres an hour
11:45and after normal circumstances
11:47it's the world's
11:48most brilliant view.
11:49Today,
11:49it's a bit ordinary.
11:51So who knows
11:51what's going to happen
11:52in the next 45 minutes
11:53with this race.
11:54We'll keep our fingers crossed.
