00:01Larry likes doing it sideways.
00:07Russell prefers a big punt in the front.
00:10Up onto two wheels and bang!
00:13While Jonesy clearly favours a head massage.
00:16This is Brad Jones!
00:18That's a big roll over.
00:20Whichever way you like it, V8 Supercar Racing Adelaide style had it all in the Clipsal 500.
00:26Two days of record crowds and crash and bash.
00:30A smorgasbord of Holden versus Ford.
00:36Lowndes has got Seton, that's a brilliant move!
00:38Dangerous downpours.
00:40Braveness and stupidity.
00:42Cruel mechanical failures.
00:44Lowndes has got a problem.
00:46And a brilliant last to first victory for Mark Scaife.
00:49Well done to Mark Scaife, a storming drive!
00:52Through it all, Mr Consistency, Garth Tander, extended his series lead.
00:57With Scaife, Radisic, Seton and Lowndes now close behind in the points.
01:01Things are really hotting up as we welcome you to Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway.
01:07For Round 4 of the 2000 Shell Championship Series.
01:11Exclusive to your home of V8 Supercar Racing.
01:14Network 10.
01:15Which way do you like it?
01:17Nooo!
01:18Oh look at that!
01:19Nooo!
01:20Nooo!
01:21Nooo!
01:2210 years ago, it was christened with a touring car racing for a time that was the home of the Australian 500cc motorcycle Grand Prix.
01:27Ten years ago it was christened with a touring car race and for a time it was the home of
01:49the Australian 500cc motorcycle Grand Prix.
01:52Today it plays host to round four of the Shell Championship Series.
01:55Hello I'm Greg Raston.
01:56Welcome to Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway.
01:58We're around about 30 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD.
02:01An absolutely glorious day here, not a cloud in the sky and we're set for a marvellous afternoon
02:06of V8 supercar racing.
02:07We revert to this round to the traditional three-race format.
02:10Let's take a look at the championship point score for you.
02:13And right now it looks like this, Garth Tanner on top of the points, 422 from Mark Scave after
02:18that Adelaide effort, just 54 points in arrears.
02:21Defending champion Craig Lowndes' fifth engine problems forced him out of the second race
02:25at the Island and the Clipsal 500 and that cost him a lot of points.
02:28Paul Radisic continues to be the best of the Blue Oval Brigade.
02:31Well Barry Sheen, have you ever seen such a great crowd as we've seen here at Eastern Creek?
02:35They're already rolling through the doors.
02:37Totally amazing.
02:38I mean the crowd is sort of ten deep to try and get through the turnstiles and that.
02:41The traffic is back, back.
02:42I think it would be the biggest crowd at Eastern Creek ever.
02:44Now we're expecting some changes as we walk to, or work towards rather the next round at
02:48Hidden Valley?
02:49Yeah, the parity committee have come up in their wisdom with, to slow the HRT down, what they're
02:55going to do is take a hundred millimetres off the front tray underneath the car.
02:59I don't want to get complicated about it.
03:01But the silly thing about it is Greg, what it's going to do is it's going to slow all, if it
03:05works, it's going to slow all the Holdens down, so you get like the Kmart team and Murphy
03:08and Richards, they really need all the help they can get.
03:10What they should do really is say, okay, the only Holdens we want to slow down are HRT,
03:15so why don't they penalise them with some weight?
03:17You know, whack 30 kilos of lead in it, if that doesn't work, whack 40 kilos in, until
03:22it brings it down to the speed, the same speed as everybody else.
03:25Then when they get beaten, take some of the weight out.
03:27That way at least it's fair, but as it stands, penalising the Kmart team, the Perkins, etc,
03:32etc, it's not the way of doing it.
03:33There you go, one vote for the lead trophy system.
03:36Well, it's Mark Scaife's 100th championship start here this weekend, and he's doing it
03:40in fine style as well.
03:41He's qualified on pole position, just alongside him, teammate Craig Lowndes, so an all HRT front
03:46row.
03:47Series leader Garth Tander and a resurgent Russell Ingle are on row two.
03:50Tony Longhurst has done a good job to be on the third row in a forward alongside Paul
03:54Radisic.
03:54Another standout for young line Todd Kelly, he'll start from grid position nine, and as you
03:58can see, a disappointing qualifying session for Bathurst winners Greg Murphy and Stephen
04:02Richard, Stephen Johnson also not a happy camper at the end of that qualifying session.
04:07Right now, though, Mark Osler is with the fastest of the drivers here at Eastern Creek.
04:11Well, in his long and successful career, you could say that Mark Scaife's had a bit of a
04:15love-hate relationship with Eastern Creek.
04:17Back in 1995, he had a terrible accident here that put him out for quite a number of weeks.
04:21But since then, it's been a fantastic place for him.
04:24Dominant here in 1999, and it looks like in 2000, Mark, continuing that form.
04:29This place is pretty good to you now.
04:30It has been, Mark.
04:31I mean, it's been a bit ordinary early in the 90s.
04:33But, I mean, we ended up, we've won a couple of times here, and it's a place that I really
04:37like.
04:38It's really fast.
04:39It's like Phillip Island.
04:40And, you know, it's a place that you have sort of happy memories about, really, other
04:42than firing the fence once.
04:43Is it tough getting a fast lap out of the car here in qualifying?
04:46That was a brilliant lap yesterday.
04:47Yeah, look, it was.
04:48I mean, it's a place that if you're really committed and you're really on the edge of disaster,
04:54you get a good reward, and that's, I mean, that's the good circuits, and certainly it's
05:01very easy just to make a little mistake and probably dump, you know, three or four tenths
05:05of a second.
05:06So, you know, look, I was really enjoying it.
05:07It was one of those laps you get away with every now and then.
05:10Now, regardless of pole position, a front row start here, obviously, critical.
05:14Oh, certainly.
05:15I mean, any of the sprint rounds, qualifying is important, and if we can just sneak the car
05:19away today, we'll be okay.
05:21Best of luck today.
05:23A pretty happy mark, Skafe, and why wouldn't he be after winning the round last year?
05:27Can he do it in 2000?
05:29Let's take a closer look at the circuit for you, and it's just shy of four k's in length
05:33and characterised by that one kilometre long main straight.
05:36A real mixture of corners from the sweeper at turn one to the hairpins like turns nine
05:40and turn two.
05:41But to show you the quick way around the creek, here's Neil Crompton with the forward inside
05:45line.
05:46Welcome aboard the FTR AU XR8 V8 supercar.
05:55We are at the 3.9 kilometre Eastern Creek Raceway.
05:58Not a bad track, not a sensational track, but one that we do enjoy coming to.
06:03Turn two.
06:04Down to turn two, the slowest corner on the track, it's a second gear corner.
06:07It's about 75 odd k's.
06:10Have to keep the car square out of here, up to third, then a short shift into fourth gear
06:16for this long, constant radius right hand turn three.
06:19Up over the tunnel, down the other side, a couple of bumps here and back to third.
06:24Very important not to jump too deep into this corner, because there's lots of built on the
06:28road on the left.
06:29Turn five, another constant radius left-hander.
06:33Use all the concrete on the exit apron.
06:36This is the corner I can't stand, six and seven, it turns right before it turns left.
06:41Why it does that, I have absolutely no idea.
06:45Up to fourth gear, just missed the shift a little bit there, sorry Glenn.
06:49Round turn eight, a few bumps round the back of Corporate Hill.
06:53Hard on the brakes, down to second gear for the tight right-hander.
06:57This is turn nine, the hairpin, accelerate hard out of here, up to third, up to fourth.
07:04Car gets up to around about 190 odd k's here, another corner where we turn right before we
07:10turn left.
07:11Turn 10, now turn 11, jump across the ripple strip, out to the apron, easy does it with
07:19the power when you come onto the front straight here, use all the exit space.
07:22A bit of a glance in the mirrors to make sure everybody's happy.
07:26Third, fourth, fifth and sixth, past the enormous grandstand, you can hear the Ford fans cheering.
07:33260 k's back to fifth gear and through one of the best corners, turn one, it's an absolute
07:38ripper.
07:39That's a hot lap of Eastern Creek.
07:41Turn one is a ripper and there's a big crowd down there as well, a huge crowd here at Eastern
07:45Creek and they're getting set to watch a huge field of V8 supercars do battle in race one,
07:49right after the break.
07:52And it said that!
07:53Oh!
07:54Oh!
07:55Oh!
07:56Oh!
07:57Oh!
07:58And it said that!
07:59Oh!
08:00Fresh clunk!
08:01Well, Glenn Segan got away to a brilliant...
08:02Oh!
08:03Oh!
08:04Oh!
08:05I thought he wouldn't be loved.
08:07Todd Kelly has scrunched the Holden Young Lions gun.
08:10Oh!
08:11Look at this!
08:12Oh!
08:13Oh!
08:14Oh!
08:15Oh!
08:16Oh!
08:17Oh!
08:18Oh!
08:19Oh!
08:20Oh!
08:21Oh!
08:22Oh!
08:23Oh!
08:24Oh!
08:25Want to Watch.
08:26Who's here when we look excited today.
08:27We've got some of the mighty moments we've seen here at the Creek in the past.
08:28And people like Todd Kelly and Wayne Gardner will be wanting to forget those moments,
08:34indeed, as they head off on their warm-up lap for the first of three sprints today.
08:35The first one, in fact all three of them being 13 lappers around the Creek, this is
08:39how they'll line up.
08:40Mark Scape on Pole, an all HRT front ropes, Craig Lowndes is alongside him.
08:45Tander and Russell Ingle, Paul Radisic, the first of the Ford drivers, Longhurst, Seaton
08:49and Bowe. Out of nine, Todd Kelly, big improver, and the Holden Young Lions, Commodore Neil
08:55Crompton alongside in the FTR Ford, Craig Baird and Jason Bargwana. Out of row six,
08:59out of row seven, Stephen Johnson and Larry Perkins, John Faulkner and Stephen Richards
09:03will start out of eight. It's been a disastrous weekend for the Kmart racing team and Greg
09:07Murphy didn't end up going that well either. As you can see there, he starts out of position
09:1318, just behind his former Super Touring teammate Brad Jones, Paul Wheel and Dougal McDougal
09:17from row 10, Mark Larkham and Cameron McConville on row 11, and Stephen Ellery and Cameron
09:22McLean. Greg Ritter and Peter Doolman, Paul Morris, one way back in the big cab Commodore,
09:28Thomas Mazira alongside Mark Poole, and Rodney Forbes, Anthony Tratt, another of the Fords
09:32and Mick Donagher. Around the mat for you, Reid, Romano, Ashby, Smurton and Heath, Barry Sheen,
09:38a big field of cars here. Quite incredible, when you see how far some of the good guys are
09:42back, you know, that shows you the quality, the depth, the quality. Incidentally, Stephen
09:47Johnson has been struggling this weekend, he's got a nerve trapped in his right arm,
09:51and he's been at the acupuncture guy chiropractor all the week, so that's why Johnson's struggling.
09:56Mitre 10 race cam shows you Mark Larkham in action, will bring you plenty of pickies
10:00from the Mitre 10 Ford. He'll be looking for a good result this weekend, has had an up and
10:05down weekend thus far, was up in practice. No science today on the feet that we're used to
10:10doing for Blanco. Good to see Brad Jones back too, anyone who's watching the Eclipse 500
10:16telecast at Adelaide, remember Brad did a spectacular rollover in the car, and the crew
10:21together with the members of the TAFE crash repair team worked around the clock back at
10:26his workshops in Albury to get that car back in action. Brad carrying our Colton and United
10:30in car, this is the V Clearance Simple camera aboard the Black Cat Falcon with John Bauer.
10:35Glenn Seaton, bit of a star at Adelaide, and looking for a strong run here, he's qualified
10:41quite well seventh, must happen to be a little bit further up the order, this car has responded
10:45very well to the 2000 specification Bridgestone control tyre, probably more so than a lot of
10:51the Fords, and Seaton looking much stronger at the creek, here's the wrap, Paul Radisic, faster
10:57for the Fords in qualifying, finds himself in fifth behind a quartet of Commodores.
11:03Should also make welcome viewers right around Australia through the 10 network, and in New
11:07Zealand through TV1, for round four of the Shell Championship Series, great shot out the
11:13front there, of the Shell Helix Racing Falcon as they make their way down the front straight,
11:17here's your forward race analysis, 38 starters in this one, as I mentioned before, three
11:2213 lappers, they equate around this 3.9 kilometre long Eastern Creek Circuit to 51 kilometres,
11:29and of course last year's winner he won two races, and his team mate Craig Lowndes finished
11:34first in the third, but it was good enough for Scaifey to walk away the round winner.
11:38Well Mark Scaife is very impressive in qualifying yesterday, still about three tenths of a second
11:42away from his qualifying record, which he set last year at 1.30.65, he was about three tenths
11:48away from that, but considering they expected to be about half a second faster here if they're
11:52on the old tyres, that's still showing good progress, because that new tyre, even though
11:56it's very durable, it has proven to be a little bit slower than last year's rubber, so good strong
12:00effort from the Holton Racing team, once again proving that they are the masters of knocking
12:04their cars into shape faster than anyone, they really do a great job in qualifying.
12:08Yeah, I was talking to Gareth Tander about ten minutes ago, and he was saying that
12:11they tried something in the warm-up this morning that he was suffering mid-corner speed, and
12:17not being as quick as the HRT cars, and he says they reckon they've found it, so
12:20we're going to find out pretty soon, aren't we?
12:23Certainly will do, all just about in readiness for a start.
12:27Look at the enforcer sitting up there, fourth position, he's had a very strong qualifying
12:31run, he's way down in the points, so he's got nothing to lose, eleventh in the points
12:34standings, we get the green flag.
12:35We get set to go racing here at the creek, the first of three 13 lappers for round four
12:41of the Shell Championship Series, will it be Lowndes or will it be Scaife, or will we
12:46see the likes of Russell Ingle charge through, we are all underway, and it's green, a great
12:50start by Tander, a drag race between the Holton Racing teammates, down into turn one for the
12:55first time, Scaife's got the inside run, it's a good start.
12:58Yeah, terrific start by Radicic, they sweep through the fast left hand at turn one, and
13:03it looks as though at this stage they're all through there fairly cleanly, and now down towards
13:07turn two, Scaife's got the upper hand, look at Tander on the outside having a run, Lowndes
13:12is up there as well.
13:15Big field, and luckily no incident so far, which is a surprise, Tander sits there in third
13:20place behind the defending series champion, Craig Lowndes who covers his line, down into
13:24turn four, but to leader is Mark Scaife, so it's Scaife from Lowndes, we go back to third
13:28and it's Tander, Ingles up there, so too Radicic, Radicic in between in fact.
13:32Yeah, Russell Engle will be kicking himself there, he's ahead of Radicic on the grid,
13:37and the car just bogged down a little bit, he finds himself in behind the shell forward.
13:41Yeah, it looked like he was getting a lot of wheel spin, Mark, he was sitting out there
13:43smoking and going nowhere.
13:46So the order at the moment, Scaife using his pole position to advantage, Lowndes and Scaife
13:51got away equally well, but Scaife being on the inside, that's where he wanted to be for
13:55that swing through turn one, so he took maximum advantage of that, leads him down through
13:58turn nine, Lowndes in behind him, Garth Tander in third position, Radicic in the first of
14:03the forwards in fourth, then it's back to Ingles, and the first of the FTR Falcons.
14:07We saw Glenn Seton getting his rear left off into the dirt there on the exit of turn nine,
14:11he's really trying, and the reason for that, he's under pressure from John Bow who sits
14:15just in behind him, here is your race leader, Mark Scaife, the pole sitter from team mate
14:20Craig Lowndes, Tander in third place, then it's Radicic, a great start, he's already moved
14:24up one position from his qualifying point, if you like, and is now in fourth place ahead
14:28of Ingles, Seton, Bow, then it's Kelly with a problem there for Steve Reid, that's on
14:32the exit of turn 12, coming onto the front straight, they sweep again through turn one,
14:37the Holden racing team have assumed command.
14:40Yeah, it's position's normal, so Mark Scaife dominant here, and indeed his team mate Craig
14:45Lowndes last year.
14:46Now Jason Barguanis coming into the pit, so there's some sort of problem there for the
14:49second of the Valvoline Cummins Commodores, not quite sure what happened, I'll try and
14:55get a replay of that for you and have a look possibly also at what happened to Steve Reid.
15:00Oh yes, it's a bit of a touch there, he got turned round by, who's that, Stephen Ellery?
15:05Yeah, it is, Stephen Ellery, yeah, a little tap on the inside left, and that's what happens.
15:11Down in pit lane there, there is Bargs, and that is obviously terminal, the youngster is
15:16out of the car, and that is not a good way to start his day, when you consider Mark that
15:20he finished in third place in the second race of the Clipsal 500, so he was on a high
15:26coming into this round.
15:27The Valvoline Cummins cars from the Gary Rogers stable have always been very reliable,
15:31so that's a surprising out for Jason Barguanis, and unfortunately that puts him right at the
15:35back of the grid for the start of heat two.
15:37This is looking out the back of the shell, Helix number 18 Falcon and Paul Radisic.
15:41Yeah, it seems to accelerate really good, that thing of Radisic is, pulling away, comes
15:47out, and it came out of the hairpin really nice.
15:49Oh, a doogle, a doogle!
15:50Damn me, that's, what's going on there?
15:52It's, it looked like, oh it is smoke, I thought it looked like steam to start off it.
15:58Not quite sure where the circuit that is, we might have a replay of it coming up in a
16:01minute, but a bit of problem for the Pepsi Commodore.
16:04Stradded out there on the track, but the order continues, Skate, Lounge, Tander, Radisic,
16:08Engel, Gwen Seton, John Bauer back in seventh, Tony Longhurst, Neil Crompton, and Craig Baird
16:13in the Perth Tech Falcon, rounds out the top ten.
16:15Yeah, the front three are pulling away from, just fractionally from Radisic now, by the
16:19looks of it.
16:21Now this could be interesting, because the officials are having difficulty moving
16:24Dougal McDougal's Pepsi Commodore from turn nine, where he has spun, and he's been unable
16:29to restart that car.
16:30Now these guys are currently at turn four on the circuit, so they will be in that vicinity
16:35of the track very, very quickly, there is Garth Tander sitting in third place at the
16:39moment.
16:40Boy, they'll have, if they can't move it, they'll have the yellow flags out, and obviously when
16:44the flags are not allowed to pass or anything, so we'll have to wait and see when they get
16:49there.
16:49Fastest lap so far for Mark Skate, a 1.33.56 for the Holton Racing Team driver, that's
16:55still a long way away from the lap record, though, a 1.31.75 set by Craig Lowndes.
17:00They come down to turn nine here, Mark, this is where McDougal's car is parked, they're waving
17:04the yellow flag, just in time, in the nick of time, the officials, so that's good work.
17:08Skate continues to lead from Lowndes, then it's Tander, and a bit of a gap back to fourth
17:13place now to Paul Radicic.
17:15Let's check out the Shell Helix replay.
17:17Oh, what's this?
17:18This is, no, that's it.
17:20Oh, that's Steve Richards, a little bit of a tap there, but it looks a bit.
17:25Oh, they just did well to hang on to it.
17:28Now that's a separate incident, because it's a turn four.
17:29Oh, this is down at turn nine.
17:33Now there's been contact there.
17:36Oh, look at it.
17:37It was Stephen Richards again.
17:39Yeah, I think it was, actually.
17:41Those two blokes were trading blows all the way around that track.
17:45Unfortunately, McDougal's come off second best.
17:47And we hear from the pits that the reason for Jason Bargwana's retirement was another collision
17:53with Stephen Richards, apparently bent the steering arm on the Valvoline Cummins car,
17:57so that's why he's had to retire.
17:58So Stephen Richards has really been in the wars in the opening laps.
18:01He's fired up.
18:02The word, too, is that McDougal's car can't be restarted for whatever reason, so that will
18:06be parked off to the edge of turn nine for the remainder of this race.
18:10There's your race score.
18:11Skate leads from Lowndes, Tander, and Radicic.
18:13We go back, Ingle, Seton, Bowen, Longhurst, Brad Jones on screen.
18:17He's fighting away with John Faulkner.
18:19Yeah, going well.
18:19He was in the wars yesterday.
18:20Faulkner had a bit of an altercation very late in the session with Russell Ingle.
18:24Not only did they trade blows on the circuit, but they traded words off the circuit as well.
18:29It'd be interesting to see if anything happens there.
18:32If that was Stephen Richards, that two bangs and another pan we barred,
18:35it'd be interesting to see if their official dummy's consistent.
18:39You know, it's been pretty good this year, and they penalised a few people.
18:42And it'd be interesting, I suppose, if we wanted to have a look at our footage, aren't they?
18:47It was a miracle story of the season so far.
18:50The resurrection of the Aussie male Falcon of Brad Jones.
18:54Anyone who caught that horrific accident he had at Adelaide has said the car ended up on its roof.
18:59Very heavily damaged.
19:00The boys have been working flat out to get it back in race trim.
19:03Oh, Brad, he sits so close, doesn't he?
19:09He's got a rough idea how quick it is.
19:27So that's the fast left-hander at the end of the spray, coming to a hairpin.
19:31Brad at the moment, for those of you, possibly from Albury, that are following his progress,
19:35which is where he hails from, in 13th place at the moment, the Aussie male Falcon,
19:39which is a fantastic effort.
19:41The team, by their own admission, have worked so hard at repairing this car,
19:45worked day and night to do it.
19:46They've had a couple of testing days at Winton trying to get it right.
19:49They thought they had a good package and they came here.
19:52And all the data they'd acquired, they virtually had to throw out the window.
19:54They said it was virtually a pig.
19:56It was handling terribly during the course of practice and qualifying.
20:00But obviously, they've struck a chord.
20:02He thinks it's going very well.
20:03The trouble is for these teams that are trying to find their feet
20:06in the most competitive formula in Australia,
20:08under the regulations at the moment,
20:10no team has allowed more than 12 test days during the year.
20:13They've already used up half of them.
20:15Well, I was going to say, that may be fine for an established team,
20:17but when you're coming in right behind the eight ball like these guys,
20:20they've already used up six test days.
20:22They've got a hell of a lot of data they've got to try and collect to catch up.
20:25And it really is very difficult for these new teams to get a foothold.
20:29Yeah, I completely agree with that.
20:30When you consider the database that HRT's working from,
20:35then you take the other extreme, Brad Jones.
20:38It's not fair, really, is it?
20:39You bear in mind there too, Barry,
20:40that this car is an ex-Tony Longhurst Falcon,
20:42and Brad and Tony have very different driving styles.
20:45And any data, if they did acquire it from Tony,
20:47is probably of not too much value to Brad.
20:49And they've been working and trying to get a package
20:51that works well for Bradley.
20:52Right now, Skate leads.
20:53There is your Munro driver profile.
20:56Your pole's sitting here.
20:56Mark Skate, the 33-year-old from Melbourne.
20:58Of course, a memorable victory
21:00in the second race of the Clipsal 500.
21:03I was just saying, they're pulling away from Radisic.
21:05It looks a little bit like Radisic is Holden-Engler.
21:082.6 seconds, the gap back to the shell forward
21:11to this leading trail.
21:12We've seen it all year.
21:14Two Holden Racing Team, Commodores and Garth Tander.
21:16They're the dominant force in 2000.
21:18How about Russell being kicking himself
21:19that he didn't go to the start?
21:22Well, it is difficult.
21:23Around this track, a lot of constant radius corners.
21:25And we do see that quite often
21:27when the cars get locked up in this train.
21:29Quite difficult to overtake.
21:31Well, Russell said yesterday during the course
21:32of the Meet the Drivers briefing
21:33that he's got nothing to lose.
21:34He's languishing in 11th place in the championship.
21:37And right now he's going very hard.
21:38John, Mark Bull, I should say,
21:40in the John Deere Commodore
21:41having a brief off down at Turn 4.
21:43Let's check him out on your Shell Helix race score.
21:45Mark Scape and Craig Lowndes
21:46are top of the tree from Garth Tander
21:48and Paul Radisic.
21:49And it's Russell Ingle, Glenn Seton,
21:51John Bauer and Tony Longhurst.
21:53They are your top eight.
21:54Neil Condon, Craig Baird,
21:55Greg Murphy has recovered to be up in 11th.
21:57And Brad Jones, a great job in 13th at the moment.
21:59Stay with us here at the Creek.
22:04Holden's running one, two and three
22:09on the way over the road
22:09in race one of the fourth round
22:12of the Shell Championship Series.
22:13Scape, Lowndes and Tander,
22:15they are your top three.
22:17Those of you following Mark Larkham's pros,
22:19just how well he's going, I should say,
22:21he's had a bit of trouble,
22:22has been in for a stop-go penalty
22:23and just gone back out again.
22:27Yeah, Holden Racing team opening up.
22:29Let's have a look at the replay, Baz.
22:30Oh, it's Paul Will.
22:31Well, basically, he just lost it
22:33and the story had nothing to it.
22:36That's a shame for him
22:37because he's been really going very well
22:39this year and it's earned a little a lot.
22:41Yeah, he's earned a bit of speed on occasions.
22:43Yeah.
22:44But this is where the real speed is.
22:46You look at the back end of Lowndes' car,
22:49it looks, it's getting,
22:51it's a lot looser than Scaife's car.
22:53Yeah, these two drivers set their cars
22:55up quite differently.
22:55I know Craig likes a softer set-up than Mark Scaife
22:59and the car really doesn't move around
23:02an awful lot on the road.
23:03Problems also for Greg Murphy,
23:05the Kmart Racing Commodore.
23:06He's just come into the pits,
23:08so all that hard work
23:10was in position 13 in the Kmart Commodore.
23:15Not quite sure what happened.
23:16Now, we're being told that the officials
23:17are going through and having a good close look
23:19at the start,
23:19so it seems that these stop-go penalties
23:21that Larkham copped and Murphy's now copping
23:23could be related to jumping the start,
23:26which is very easy to do, I must say,
23:28here, because you tend to roll down
23:29and there's a slight sort of inclination
23:30on the start-finish line here.
23:32I was going to say,
23:33it might explain Murphy going from 18th to 11th.
23:37Oh, that's very odd.
23:38That's right.
23:39We did make a sensational start,
23:41so maybe it was too sensational
23:42as far as the officials are concerned.
23:44They're very, very tough on jump starts.
23:48It's a nice little supercar.
23:49Freight trainer forwards,
23:51a seat and bow along us,
23:52Crompton and Baird all together.
23:54Tell you what,
23:54Paul Morris is doing a good job there.
23:55He started out of position 27
23:57and has moved up to 16th,
23:59I think it is at the moment,
24:00in the big cab racing Commodore.
24:02In fact, 17th it is that he is on the road.
24:04Now, they were having some...
24:05Oh, I think it's gone.
24:06Look at this down,
24:06the inside of Stephen Johnson.
24:07Oh, they're going to fight about it,
24:09but they actually touch.
24:10Yes, they do.
24:11Coming through turn nine,
24:12now Cameron McConville
24:13takes advantage of that.
24:15Stephen Johnson fighting back, though.
24:18Well, at least they seem to have
24:18sorted Cameron's car out now.
24:20It was misfiring,
24:22getting over...
24:23As soon as it went over 5,000,
24:25under any kind of...
24:26Oh!
24:27It's a bit tight.
24:28Yeah, as soon as it got over 5,000,
24:30I think it kept cutting out and misfiring,
24:32so they had to change virtually everything
24:34because they didn't know what it was.
24:36Well, Stephen Johnson's doing a terrific job so far,
24:38considering it's his rookie
24:39Shell Championship Series season,
24:41doing a full season.
24:42He has competed before
24:42in the odd round or two,
24:44but this is the first time
24:44he's launched a full campaign.
24:46He's currently sixth in the points.
24:49I asked Stephen how he got the nerve trapped
24:51in his shoulder.
24:51He said lifting...
24:52Look at this down to the inside.
24:53Rodney Forbes having a go.
24:54Cameron McConville as well.
24:55Three wide down into turn two.
24:57Oh, goodness.
24:58That was going to end in tears,
24:59and luckily it hasn't,
25:00and Forbes is the man
25:01who's profited from all that.
25:02A bit of a touch.
25:03Oh, yes!
25:06Did well to hang on to that, didn't he?
25:08Oh, Greg Murphy.
25:10Gets the short back and sides.
25:11I mean, Rodney Forbes
25:12gets the short back and sides.
25:14That was very tough stuff.
25:16Oh, dear.
25:17Oh, here we go.
25:18Anthony Tratt.
25:19Problems there in the Toll Falcon,
25:21and he's slowing down.
25:22Looks like it's on the exit of turn 12, in fact.
25:24Now these two are up again.
25:25Look at the front of the boards.
25:27So they're not giving up.
25:28Cameron McConville,
25:29the 26-year-old from Victoria.
25:31Former Australian Formula 4 champion,
25:34did it in 1992.
25:36Rodney Forbes
25:36finished second in last year's
25:38Privateers Championship in the V8s,
25:40and this year,
25:40a level one driver
25:41in the winds-backed Commodore.
25:44Look at this down the inside
25:45at turn nine.
25:45McConville has another look.
25:46These two are going at it.
25:47Absolutely hammer and tong.
25:52Cameron McConville.
25:53It's an important round for him
25:54in the championship,
25:55with three laps remaining
25:56for our race leader.
25:5726-year-old Victorian.
25:59He's right back in the points,
26:0125th in the order so far.
26:03Steve Johnson's lost his wing mirror,
26:05I think, Mark.
26:06He's got all of all that.
26:07Yeah.
26:08There's plenty of fisticuffs.
26:09You're quite right there, too, Mark.
26:11They're doing quite well
26:12with this Autopro Commodore.
26:14They're gradually coming to terms with it.
26:16Well, that was...
26:17I have to say,
26:17the three of them did very well there,
26:19not to really get out of shape
26:22and banging.
26:23Yeah.
26:25Cameron McConville did well, isn't he?
26:28Back at the front of the field.
26:30No change.
26:32Holden Racing Team
26:33running one and two,
26:34but it's car two ahead of car one.
26:36Escape from Lowndes and Tander.
26:38Now, Tander is close here,
26:40but it's so difficult to pass
26:41at Eastern Creek.
26:42That's the thing.
26:44Yeah, I've seen it over the years,
26:45V8 racing here.
26:46You do get a few big goes
26:48happening down at about turn two,
26:49but for most of the track,
26:50you really are locked in.
26:51You know what Russell Ingle
26:52said to me the other night?
26:53He said,
26:53you know what would be interesting
26:54is to run this circuit in reverse
26:55because that would change
26:56the radius of the corners
26:58of this place a lot more
26:59and would open up,
27:00he believes,
27:00a lot more passing opportunities.
27:02So there's something to think about.
27:03Garth Tander could be
27:04in a good position here
27:05if he can get a good run
27:06onto the straight
27:07because he's got both
27:09the HRT cars,
27:11so he should get
27:12a really good drag.
27:13He needs to be a lot closer than that.
27:15And then there's a possibility
27:16of getting up the inside
27:17into turn one.
27:19Now, what's...
27:20No, he's not close enough.
27:21So as they come across
27:22the start-finish line
27:22this time around,
27:23there are two laps remaining.
27:24A great shot
27:25from the good you blimp,
27:27isn't it?
27:27Fantastic as they go
27:28right down into turn one.
27:30Now, for all your V8 Supercar information,
27:32why not jump on the net
27:33and check out
27:34the V8 Supercar website,
27:35V8Supercar.com.au.
27:38It's got race results,
27:39a whole heap of information
27:40about the championship.
27:41And while you're on there,
27:42why don't you check out
27:43the 10 website as well?
27:44I think from memory
27:45there's a link there
27:45to the 10 website,
27:46but if not,
27:4710.com.au.
27:49All the sorts of information
27:50on 10 programs.
27:51A big fest coming up tonight.
27:52A lot of Tom Cruise movies
27:53happening,
27:54and by those of you
27:56watching last night
27:56would have checked out
27:57Barry Sheen on Good News Week.
27:58Oh, my God.
27:59We've got a gap back
28:01to Paul Radisic now.
28:025.3 seconds.
28:03That leading trio
28:04are really monstrous.
28:06We go on board
28:07with the Rad.
28:08Hard at the wheel,
28:10but just not fast enough
28:12here this weekend.
28:13Yeah, it does look like
28:14Paul is holding up Russell
28:16because if he was Russell,
28:19we'd definitely be making
28:20a bit of faster
28:20than he is at the moment.
28:21It's amazing how the times
28:22have pumped out too.
28:23They started off at 1.33.2
28:25for Scaife's fastest lap
28:27on lap three.
28:27We're now at lap 11
28:28and they're all running
28:291.34.6, 1.34.7,
28:31so times have pumped out
28:33by a second
28:33over this race distance.
28:36Jump aboard with the Rad.
28:38In the Shell Helix racing,
28:40Falcon working towards
28:41turns 11 and 12.
28:44And quite a gap
28:45between himself
28:46and Garth Tander
28:47who sits in third place.
28:48Radisic currently in fourth,
28:50making his way out
28:51of turns 11 and 12
28:52and on to the one
28:52kilometre long main straight.
28:55In the AU Falcon,
28:56this is where they
28:56rev it right out
28:57and up to sixth gear
28:58and he will get
28:58the last lap
28:59forward this time around.
29:01As they come across
29:02the start-finish line,
29:03the HRT duo
29:04flash across
29:05and so too does Tander.
29:07One lap to go.
29:09Oh, it's Tander's...
29:15He's going to struggle.
29:18I mean, basically,
29:19there really isn't
29:20anywhere there
29:21unless he can get on
29:22good onto the
29:23start-finish straight
29:25or maybe downhill
29:26into the hairpin,
29:27but...
29:27Look at him
29:28having a look here.
29:29He's going to go everywhere,
29:30but it's so easy
29:31to stay in the middle
29:32of the road
29:33in this place.
29:34And this is helping
29:34Mark Scaife immensely.
29:36There's now about
29:37a car length or two
29:38between these guys
29:39and they work towards
29:40turns six and seven
29:41around the back
29:42of the corporate hill area
29:44here at Eastern Creek.
29:45No change in position.
29:47Scaife holds command
29:49from Lowndes.
29:50Very important round
29:50for Craig Lowndes too
29:51because with those two
29:52failures in the car
29:53in the opening rounds
29:54of the championship,
29:55he's now fifth
29:55on points,
29:56about 162 points
29:58behind Tander.
29:58So he really has to
29:59start finishing every race
30:01if he's going to keep
30:01his championship chase alive.
30:03Lowndes plays defensive.
30:05A bit of lap traffic
30:05coming into play here.
30:06Will it affect them
30:07between now
30:09and when they see
30:09the chequered flag?
30:10Escape from Lowndes
30:11and Tander.
30:13Opportunities fast
30:13running out
30:14for our 23-year-old
30:15championship leader
30:16in the Valvoline
30:17Cummins Commodore.
30:18Right now he sits
30:19in third place.
30:20Lowndes plays again
30:22defensive,
30:23forcing Tander
30:23to do all the hard work
30:24onto the front straight
30:25for the final time
30:26and this I think
30:27is how they'll finish.
30:28Escape will take out
30:29race one,
30:30chequered flag at the ready.
30:31Lowndes will finish second.
30:32A great result
30:33for the Holden Racing team
30:34one and two
30:35and a good job also
30:36by Garth Candor
30:37getting home
30:38in third place.
30:41First of the four
30:41is home Paul Radisic
30:42so well done
30:43to the Kiwi.
30:45And then it's
30:45Russell Ingle,
30:47Glenn Seaton
30:47and John Bauer.
30:49That is how they finished
30:50in race one.
30:52Here at Eastern Creek
30:53another 2.13 lap
30:54is still set
30:55to come your way.
30:58A big, big day's racing
30:59and the times
31:00as Mark Osler
31:00pointed out
31:01have been quite incredible.
31:03The best for Escape
31:04was a 1.33.26
31:05his last lap
31:07to give you an idea
31:07a 1.34.73
31:09so during the course
31:11of that race
31:12the times dropped off
31:13and it'll be interesting
31:14to see particularly
31:15in terms of tyre choice
31:16just how things go
31:17in race two
31:18and race three
31:19here today
31:19at the creek.
31:20Let's check out
31:21the Shell Helix
31:22race score for you
31:23at the end of race one.
31:24Scaven Lowndes
31:25from Tander,
31:26Radisic,
31:27Russell Ingle
31:27and Glenn Seaton.
31:28John Bauer
31:29there as well
31:29in the Cat Racing Falcon
31:31and Tony Longhurst
31:32rounds out the top eight.
31:34We go further back
31:35Neil Crompton
31:35in the Ford Tickford
31:36Racing Falcon
31:37then it's Craig Baird
31:38Brad Jones
31:39up to 12
31:39which is terrific
31:40and Stephen Richards
31:41after all that
31:41barging
31:42finishes in 15th place.
31:44Well time now
31:44for you
31:45to win a great competition.
31:46forget that.
