The Maldives and Malaysia have reaffirmed their longstanding diplomatic ties, with both nations expressing hope to expand cooperation in education, trade, technology and climate resilience.

00:00The warmth of your welcome reflects the time-honored bonds of friendship between our two countries.
00:07The Prime Minister and I held very fruitful discussions today on a wide range of issues.
00:14We reaffirmed our commitment to elevate our partnership to greater heights, keeping in
00:20mind that the Maldives and Malaysia are bound by shared values, mutual respect and a strong
00:26foundation of Islamic faith.
00:29This year we celebrate the 57th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between our
00:34two countries.
00:35Over the decades, our partnership has matured into one characterised by high-level cooperation
00:42and people-to-people exchanges.
00:44I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Government and the people of Malaysia for the
00:48generous assistance and cooperation extended to the Maldives over the years, especially
00:53in developing our human resource capacity.
00:57The Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme has contributed immensely to capacity building
01:04of our civil servants over the years.
01:07In addition, the educational opportunities provided to Maldivians in Malaysia have enriched individual
01:15lives and contributed to the nation's development.
01:18I welcome the over 600 scholarship opportunities that have been made available to Maldivian students
01:25by Malaysian higher education institutions.
01:28I express deep appreciation to the Prime Minister and the Malaysian Government for the supportive
01:34visa arrangements extended to the Maldivian students and their families, particularly with
01:39the arrangement of the Guardian visa.
01:42These policies have significantly contributed to Malaysia's position as a preferred destination,
01:48especially for the Maldivians pursuing higher education.
01:52As Excellency the Prime Minister has highlighted, we have signed and exchanged key documents aimed
01:57at enhancing our collaboration in areas such as health, tourism, sports, financial services and training
02:05of our diplomats.
02:07These instruments will serve as strong foundations for expanding collaboration and delivering tangible
02:14benefits to our people.
02:16Our discussions paved the way for future collaboration in several promising areas.
02:21I also express our keen interest in expediting and concluding MOUs in the field of defence and other
02:31important areas.
02:33Malaysia's advancement and leadership in the halal industry and digital economy are truly commendable.
02:38I deeply appreciate the Prime Minister's willingness to share Malaysia's expertise with us.
02:44We are interested in exploring joint initiatives in digital transformation such as information technology,
02:51artificial intelligence and cyber security.
02:54We look forward to forging meaningful partnerships that can tap into these dynamic sectors for mutual
03:01benefits.
03:02Trade and investment remains key pillars of our bilateral relationship.
03:06We exchange ideas and avenues for enhanced trade and investments between our two countries.
03:13I see immense potential to deepen our economic ties and invite Malaysian investors to explore
03:19opportunities for opportunities in the Maldives, particularly in our special economic zones, business sector,
03:25financial services, maritime economy and in addition to digital economy.
03:32Later today I will attend a business forum where I will get the opportunity to engage with Malaysian
03:39businesses and investors.
03:41I thank you Prime Minister for deciding to take your time out to grace the occasion and it
03:49is a great honour for the Maldivian people.

03:53We have also exchanged views on matters such as climate change with which countries to pose
04:01an existential threat to the Maldives as a low-aligned small island development state.
04:07I shared our national commitments including our efforts towards generating 33% of our energy
04:13for renewable sources by 2028 and the ongoing work to plant 5 million trees in our country
04:21by 2028.
04:23The Maldives economy and livelihoods are heavily dependent on sustainability of our fragile environment.
04:29I spoke to the Prime Minister about the importance of accessible global adaptation finance for vulnerable
04:35countries such as the Maldives, struggling with the disproportionate brunt of the ill effect
04:41of climate change.
04:44Looking ahead, we are united in our vision to transform our close partnership, including
04:48through high-level exchanges and meaningful engagements that enrich our understanding and
04:54strengthen our bonds.
04:56I also conveyed to the Prime Minister our full support and cooperation as Malaysia takes on
05:03ASEAN chairmanship this year.
05:06I am pleased that our meeting concluded with a strong sense of mutual respect, shared purpose
05:12and optimism for the future.
05:14I am honoured to extend an invitation to the Prime Minister to undertake an official visit to
05:19the Maldives at your convenience.
