00:00Millions were left without power across Spain and Portugal, following a major electricity outage that also affected parts of France, Andorra and Belgium.
00:11Catholic cardinals have set the 7th of May as the start date for the conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor.
00:20The International Court of Justice has begun hearings on Israel's obligation to facilitate humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians.
00:30At least 68 African migrants have been killed in a U.S. airstrike on a detention center in Houthi-controlled northwestern Yemen.
00:41Millions were left without power across Spain and Portugal this Monday afternoon, following a major electricity outage.
00:50The blackout was reportedly nationwide in Portugal and widespread across Spain.
00:54Madrid's main airport lost power, and other airports ceased operations, while mobile networks were also down.
01:03Metros in Lisbon and Madrid were halted, reportedly leaving passengers trapped.
01:10The outage also affected Andorra and parts of France, and reportedly also reached Belgium.
01:16Spain's government held an emergency meeting to monitor the situation.
01:19The cause is unclear, but may be related to European grid issues, or a fire that damaged the power line in France.
01:28Well, I just landed here at Porto Airport in Portugal, and as you can see on the board behind me, there is some electricity.
01:38Many of those flights are delayed by several hours already.
01:42If I turn around, then the coffee shop behind me is continuing to serve what they have in the fridges.
01:47There's no electricity there, and they're doing all of their accounting by hand.
01:51The only people who seem at all concerned are the mobile phone salesmen, who are guarding what's in their store.
01:57They, too, don't have any network at the moment, or any electricity.
02:01I would say the situation is calm but confused, as people wait for more information.
02:06Jeremy Wilkes at Porto Airport for your news.
02:08Catholic cardinals have set the 7th of May as the start date for the conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor, delaying the secret vote by two days.
02:22Monday's informal meeting to set the date follows the death of Pope Francis, whose funeral was held on Saturday.
02:29According to the Vatican, the date was agreed to give time for the cardinals to get to know each other and find a consensus on a candidate before they are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel.
02:41The closed-door meeting will start inside the chapel and will involve some 135 cardinals from across the world.
02:48Although there is no set time frame for choosing the next Pope, the two conclaves that took place in 2005 and 2013 only lasted two days.
03:00Many cardinals have cited the desire to continue Pope Francis' pastoral focus on people who are marginalised and against war.
03:08Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nilsson said that Greenland cannot be bought.
03:19His comments came after a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederikson at her official residence on Sunday.
03:29Speaking to the media after their meeting, Nilsson called dialogue from the United States not respectful.
03:36The talks from the United States have not been respectful.
03:42The words used have not been respectful.
03:45And that's why we need to, in this situation, stand together.
03:49And in Greenland, we are willing to do that with all the countries that want us good and want to respect us.
03:56Nilsson made the remarks in defiance of U.S. President Donald Trump's interest in taking control of the strategic territory.
04:06Hundreds of people gathered in a rally against Islamophobia in Paris on Sunday.
04:18Demonstrators came together to pay tribute to the man who was fatally stabbed while praying in a mosque in southern France on Friday.
04:26We are here to bring our support, to say that these kind of acts don't have their place here and to make sure that it doesn't arrive.
04:36We have a system, we have a state that has fear.
04:39And it's this fear that we take in full faith.
04:41But in front, we are there.
04:43The people is there.
04:44The French people is there.
04:45And no one has fear.
04:46French leaders condemned the attack.
04:50Prime Minister François Beirut denounced it as Islamophobic.
04:53And President Emmanuel Macron emphasized France will not tolerate racism and hatred based on religion.
05:01On Monday, French authorities said the suspect involved in the attack has been identified.
05:06According to a French prosecutor, the man turned up in a police station in Italy.
05:11The International Court of Justice has begun a week of hearings into Israel's obligation to facilitate humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories.
05:27They come in response to a UN resolution from the General Assembly last year,
05:31asking the court to weigh in after Israel blocked UNRWA from operating on its territory.
05:36The Palestinian ambassador to the Netherlands told the court that Israel is killing and displacing civilians and targeting aid workers in Gaza.
05:46Israel denies this and did not attend the hearing.
05:48It is another attempt to politicize and abuse the legal process in order to persecute Israel.
05:58The goal is to deprive Israel of its most basic right to defend itself.
06:04It is not Israel that should be on trial.
06:09It is the UN and UNRWA.
06:13The UN has become a rotten, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic body.
06:19Israel has accused UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas, a claim the aid group denies.
06:25The hearings began as Gaza's humanitarian aid system is nearing collapse
06:30after Israel blocked all entry of food, medicine and other supplies.
06:35Experts say the court's decision could impact international pressure on Israel to ease its restrictions,
06:41although it remains unclear whether it will have an effect, being not legally binding.
06:45Israel has bombed Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday.
06:54About an hour before the strike, Israel issued a warning stating it was targeting Hezbollah facilities
06:59and urged local residents to stay away from the site.
07:03The attack marks the third Israeli strike on the Lebanese capital
07:06since a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah took effect in November last year.
07:11The first strike was on the 28th of March, when Israel also gave a warning.
07:16A second strike followed on April 1st.
07:19This was a surprise strike that had killed four people, including a Hezbollah official.
07:25Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure,
07:29but Lebanon has urged the international community to pressure Israel
07:33to stop its near-daily attacks on southern and eastern parts of its country.
07:37It also requested that Israel withdraws its forces from the Lebanese territory
07:42it's still occupying as part of the ceasefire agreement.
07:48An alleged U.S. airstrike on a prison housing African migrants in Yemen
07:53has left at least 68 people dead, the Houthi rebels said on Monday.
07:59According to the Houthi-Iran Interior Ministry,
08:02some 115 migrants had been detained at the site.
08:05Graphic footage showed what appeared to be the victims and others wounded at the site,
08:11including those being treated at a packed hospital.
08:15There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military,
08:18but the American military acknowledged on Sunday
08:21it had carried out over 800 individual strikes since its month-long campaign.
08:27The Trump administration says it is targeting the Uthis
08:31It's because of the group's attacks on shipping in the Red Sea,
08:35a crucial global trade route, and on Israel.
08:39Monday's strike recalled a similar strike on the same compound in 2022
08:43by a Saudi-led coalition,
08:45which at the time caused a collapse that killed 66 detainees.
08:5011 people have been killed and at least 20 others injured
08:59after a car rammed into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, Canada,
09:05according to police.
09:07People were celebrating the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival
09:10when a car entered the street on Saturday evening.
09:13A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene.
09:17Videos posted on social media showed victims and debris strewn across a long stretch of road
09:24with at least seven people lying immobile on the ground.
09:28The Vancouver Police Department added that they don't believe it was an act of terrorism
09:33and are carrying out an investigation.
09:41Committed to the poor, migrants and the environment,
09:45Pope Francis dedicated his pontificates to the most disadvantaged.
09:50But was he really so progressive?
09:52The pontiff dedicated his first visits to the Italian island of Lampedusa,
09:57where he paid tributes to the migrants who died in the Mediterranean
10:01and denounced what he calls the globalization of indifference to their fate.
10:06He was a person for peace, a person for human dignity
10:11and he always called out when people were mistreated
10:18and when migrants were being scapegoated and demonized
10:23by not at least forces here in this parliament also.
10:26While the head of the church has opened his blessing to homosexual couples,
10:30the door to religious marriage remains closed to them.
10:34Advances in women's rights have been largely absent from his pontificate.
10:38During a visit to Belgium, the Pope described abortion doctors as hired killers
10:43and compared abortion to homicide.
10:45He did not see that to have restrictions on the sexual reproductive rights of women
10:54will not end up the abortions.
10:58The only thing that will make is these abortions to be unsafe
11:04and not accessible for all women.
11:08According to the Spanish MEP, this was a missed opportunity
11:25and the question remains, was the Pope unable or unwilling to reform the church?
