00:00A good Tuesday evening to all. Yours truly, Denise Osorio here, and this is PTV News Now.
00:11Kicking off our stories for this evening.
00:14The 4Ps or Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program is the government's premier anti-poverty and social amelioration program
00:21that combines assistance on education, skills training, feeding, and financial help to hundreds of thousands of its beneficiary families.
00:30Many of whom have turned their lives around after receiving gainful employment after finishing or graduating from the program.
00:37Even better nowadays, 4Ps members and or graduates are seizing opportunities from other government aid programs
00:46like the Bagong Pilipinas Traveling Roadshow and Job Fair that tours the entire nation to extend food items and produce at a cost.
00:54Free medical diagnosis and treatment, financial subsidies, and the most sought-after benefit,
01:00a job fair offering employment and work opportunities or job offers right on the spot.
01:06The Just Concluded Trabaho at Servisong Pangkalusugang Bagong Pilipinas Job Fair in the Gupan City
01:12yielded 100 four-piece beneficiaries slash hots or hired on the spot job seekers.
01:1821 local and 9 overseas employers had 4,000 jobs up for grabs during the job fair presided over by the Department of Labor and Employment.
01:28Of the 3,000 four-piece beneficiaries who participated,
01:31148 got the nod of employers with 124 who managed near-hire status.
01:38Labor and Employment Chief Bienvenido Laguesma stressed government's commitment to bring its services closer to the public
01:45by way of a reinforced whole-of-government strategy.
01:48Results of the latest Social Weather Station poll show, among others,
01:55the public's preference for government leaders who will fight for the country's sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
02:02Quezon City 2nd District Representative and Deputy Speaker David Suarez said,
02:06the public's overwhelming support for pro-sovereignty leaders in government
02:11underscores the country seeking government officials working for a stronger, independent future.
02:16A strat-based commission polling nationwide conducted from April 11 to April 14
02:21found that 75% of the 800 or 1,800 who joined the poll prefer officials in government
02:28who will defend the country's sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
02:32Likewise, House Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzalez said,
02:36the latest poll results clearly bolster the chances or odds of Alianza's list of senatorial candidates winning in the May 12 midterm polls.
02:45In addition, Representative Gonzalez vowed to campaign even harder for ruling coalition's Senate ticket in the remaining days of the stump.
02:56A Ukrainian couple from Kherson fled their home in 2022 as Russian artillery fire began to mount.
03:05Eventually, they made their way to America and settled in the Mile High City to restart their lives and spread the joys of Ukrainian food.
03:13VOA's Anne Rice narrates the story, care of Svetlana Pristeznianska.
03:20Yevhenia and Kostyantin Muchen had just opened their second restaurant in Kherson, Ukraine, when Russia invaded in February 2022.
03:29The fighting closed their restaurant, so Yevhenia says they helped locals with food prep and delivery.
03:35When the war came to her son, life turned upside down.
03:40We didn't expect what had happened.
03:42We worked to help save as many lives as we could, volunteering every day.
03:48During Russia's occupation of the city, they say they began receiving threats
03:52and realized they needed to keep their then six-year-old daughter safe.
03:57We had kids in basements while we helped locals, but when volunteers started disappearing,
04:04we realized we needed to leave for the sake of our daughter.
04:08The couple says they left the city at night, on foot, and ultimately ended up in the United States.
04:15Kostyantin says with just about nothing.
04:17In Ukraine, we were business owners, so it was so difficult for us to start over here.
04:24All our savings remained in Ukraine.
04:27Kostyantin tried working as a chef, but wanted to open his own venue.
04:32He didn't have the money for a restaurant, so he started small with a food truck.
04:37Restaurateurs without a restaurant, the Muchen's call themselves.
04:42We invested 4,500 into the truck.
04:44It's an old pop-up trailer.
04:46We installed a steam table and started working at fairs and breweries.
04:51Sunflower food operates in various parts of Denver.
04:55An online calendar shows where they are on any given day.
04:59The menu includes mostly family recipes, sweet and savory dumplings,
05:04cabbage rolls, potato latkes, chicken kiev, and traditional salads.
05:08Most often, people order chicken kiev, because I guess it sounds familiar, and cabbage rolls.
05:18Americans have a tough time pronouncing names of dishes, but I teach them.
05:24But he doesn't have to teach them to love the food.
05:27This was my first time ever having Ukrainian food.
05:29It was delicious.
05:31The stuffed pancakes specifically was my favorite,
05:33and the meatballs were amazing, and the dumplings.
05:37It was the best food there.
05:39We started following them on social media.
05:41It was great.
05:43My favorite dish is the dumplings.
05:45Muchen says he never expected sunflower food to be as successful as it has become.
05:50But despite their success in the U.S.,
05:53the couple dreams of returning home and opening a new restaurant,
05:57one that brings American cuisine to Ukrainians.
