00:00If you're finding it too hot at home there are a few simple steps you can take to cool your home down.
00:06One thing you can do is to keep your windows shut and curtains closed and blinds down during the
00:10heat of the day and open them in the evening to let the cool air in. Another simple step you can
00:16take is when you do open your windows in the evening, pop open any internal doors to create
00:22a cross current and get the cooler air moving quickly around your home. You can use a fan to
00:27help circulate the cooler air but you shouldn't use an electric fan if it gets above 35 degrees.
00:34You can make some improvised air conditioning if you simply place a frozen water bottle or a bowl
00:40of ice cubes in front of a fan this can help cool your house down too. One thing to do is to avoid
00:46using the oven where possible, perhaps make a refreshing salad or have a barbecue outside.
00:51House plants are a good way to keep your house cooler as well. Spider plants, aloe vera and peace
00:56lilies are particularly effective. Another tip is to stay downstairs where possible as hot air rises.
01:03You might want to move your home office downstairs if possible or even sleep downstairs if you have a
01:07sofa bed. If you are struggling to sleep one thing you can do is try putting your bed sheets inside a
01:12plastic bag in the freezer for just a few minutes before bed. You can also fill a hot water bottle
01:17with cold water and ice cubes and keep it near your feet or you could invest in a bamboo mattress topper
01:24which doesn't absorb heat in the way traditional mattresses do.
