00:00I love San Diego, by the way.
00:02Thank you. Tell us why.
00:03I've always said if I were to move anywhere else than Charleston, South Carolina,
00:07which I call kind of the San Diego of the East Coast, it'd be San Diego.
00:11It's just so beautiful.
00:12The vibes, like it reminds me of home just on the other side.
00:15It's so crazy.
00:16We hear that all the time about Charleston.
00:18Yeah, it's the gem of the South.
00:19It's beautiful, historic, almost said aquatic.
00:23What would it be? Oceanic, you know, beachy vibes.
00:26But also we live out on a farm like 25 minutes outside the city.
00:30And so, yeah, we're on Deep Creek out to the ocean, and it's like paradise.
00:36So, Brandon, I came to know you through one of my best friends, Darcy.
00:41And she's flying back from Nashville right now.
00:43She was on a trip with some friends, and she was like, no, you're talking to him.
00:47And she said, I don't care that I look like crap.
00:50I wanted to send this video.
00:52No way.
00:52As she's walking through the airport.
00:54Hi, Brandon.
00:55I love your music.
00:56So, anyway, I know it's hard to hear, but hi, Brandon.
00:59I love your music.
00:59What's her name again?
01:00Darcy.
01:01Shout out to Darcy.
01:02Love you.
01:03She thinks you are all that.
01:05Aw.
01:06Seriously, she loves you.
01:08You have to be used to that by now.
01:10But, I mean, watching.
01:10I don't know.
01:11When you and Jelly performed Heart Fought Hallelujah on Idol.
01:14Yeah.
01:15Watching Carrie react and saying, I've never met you.
01:18Yeah.
01:19But you're in my car.
01:20You're in our soundtrack of our house.
01:22And the way she reacted meeting you and you reacting meeting her.
01:26It was.
01:26Oh, I screamed.
01:27It was genuine.
01:28And it was beautiful.
01:29And I'd love to see, despite massive success on both of your sides, the admiration, the awe,
01:34the respect.
01:35And the, you know, I'll say it.
01:36The fanboy and the fangirl.
01:38That was super sweet.
01:39Yeah.
01:39It's still blowing my mind.
01:41I can't believe it.
01:41I mean, obviously, I knew I would step into that moment and just with so much respect.
01:46But to find out that she respects what I do, what I've done, is crazy.
01:51And to know that, and I think this goes for anyone, not just a celebrity, but to know that,
01:56like, there's people out there that this music is actually, like, it's their go-to to, like,
02:00get them through another day, you know?
02:03It's, like, why we do what we do.
02:05As a Christian-based artist, do you feel a bigger responsibility to make music to help
02:09people through their day?
02:10Or is it no different than any other format?
02:12You know, that's a hard conversation because I think God also delights in me writing a song
02:17about my wife because my marriage is holy, right?
02:20It's my first ministry.
02:21I think that's just as precious to God as me writing a song that could be sung in church,
02:25you know?
02:26And I think we've kind of confined them in, like, oh, this isn't a worship song because
02:29it's not, like, sung directly to the Lord.
02:32Well, I think, you know, worship and Christians become such a genre, but I think I'm just a
02:38man of worship.
02:39I think that, like, I can worship the Lord, like, and it's a lifestyle.
02:43And so I feel a sense of, I wouldn't necessarily say responsibility, but I feel a calling.
02:49Like, I feel like my calling is to make music that's going to give people faith and give
02:54them strength to keep going and also remind them, like, how God made them, that they're incredibly
03:00special, that he's obsessed with them and has a plan for their life.
03:03And I still have a blast writing other kinds of songs that aren't so on the nose Christian
03:08song.
03:09But I do feel like that's something that I'll never stop doing is writing songs that have
03:14the foundation of being faith.
03:16Well, I was just going to say, though, but your wife is made from God.
03:19Everything that is is made from God.
03:21I remember talking to my children about this when they were very little, and they're like,
03:25is God this flower?
03:26I said, God is part of the flower and the earth that it grew in and all of that.
03:30So it it really is still a praise to God, even if the subject is your wife.
03:35Yeah, I actually was just on a podcast yesterday, and I thought it was really cool. And he was
03:39like hearing he was listening to another podcast. And Bryce, the guy I was interviewing with, he
03:44said, how does a flower that's hidden in the deepest part of the forest that no man or angel
03:49will ever see give glory to God? He's I don't know if I can answer that. And then he pressed
03:54play back on the podcast. And he's like, it's because God sees the flower. And I think that
04:01man, it does. It's not about the things that I do. It's the man that I am. And that's what
04:05God cares about the most. So I pray more songs come. I hope I get to influence millions of
04:10more people. But at the end of the day, I try to remember that, like, I'm not the things
04:15that I do. And that's not where I find my worth, you know?
04:18Sure. And, and so coming back to the song, I think God's like, I'm proud. Whether you
04:23wrote a song for church or country radio, or you just sort of like being a really great
04:27husband. And you I did a record for my wife and thought I wouldn't share it with anyone.
04:31Yeah. Secret record for our 10 year anniversary. And a gift. Yeah. I led to lie to her and say
04:38I was going to Nashville to work on a different project. But I think that like he sees that
04:44and he's like, dang, I'm proud of you, son. Yeah, that's awesome. Brandon Lake is with
04:48us. It's such a pleasure to meet you, man. Last year, when Jelly, let's be honest, stole
04:51the show at Stagecoach. Yeah. He said, if they ask me back in a brilliant move, I will bring
04:56anybody I can to sing with me and make this an event. Yeah. And I'll do it on my dime.
05:02Yeah. Did he pay for you to be here? I have, I have other people that handle that. I stay
05:09out of it. And I'm like, just tell me we're in the green. And yeah, I was only kind of
05:13playing it. But seriously, though, he don't need to pay me. I'm honored to be here. I
05:17would pay. I probably am paying to be here. Let's be honest. I know you're going to do
05:21a hard fall hallelujah tonight, obviously. Yes, sir. Which is good. By the way, it's
05:25going to be a complete revival tonight. It's going to be, it's going to be one of those
05:28old school county fair, big tech revivals. And that's exactly what a Jilly Roll show is
05:34like. And I imagine what your live show is like. Any more collaborations tonight? Can you
05:39talk about it? Can you let us know? Not necessarily with me, but I know that there's a lot
05:43of collaborations happening tonight and I won't speak for Jilly, but I will say I am
05:46one of, I know a few that are really excited. Your eyes got really excited looking. So
05:52all right. Cause I'm just hoping I get to meet them backstage. That's awesome. I'm sure
05:56excited to meet you, man. Yeah, we certainly are. No, but we can see the excitement in your
06:00eyes when you said it. It's right there. Gosh, I wish I could read it. Well, clearly, you
06:06know, San Diego. So anytime you're in our neighborhood, please open door. Hang out. We're going to get
06:10great tacos, great coffee. Yeah. I've heard. Yeah. I've heard good things. I've heard good
06:14things. Really nice to meet you, man. Honored. Thank y'all for having me on. Oh, we have
06:18a gift for you. Oh, yes. Oh, right on. We have a gift for you. And thank you for saying
06:20hi to my best friend, Darcy. She's just, she sings your praises constantly. Oh, honored.
06:24Honored. Tell her I got a lot more songs coming out. King of Hearts. My record drops June 13th
06:29and we're going on tour. King of Hearts tour. Tickets are live and shows are already selling
06:33out. Beautiful. Excited to get out there with the people and sing these. So we know it's
06:37going to be windy tonight. I'm not sure you have a bandana, but now you do, but it's
06:41a John and Tam dana. Honored to rock it. And you know, you can wear it on stage if you
06:46want, but you can really do whatever you want. Would you be able to hear me sing like
06:50through the bandana? It breathes. It breathes. I don't always feel it. No. Maybe not. Maybe
06:56not. Maybe not. Anyway. But it'll keep the dust out before you sing. Oh, I was here yesterday
06:59and this morning I blew my nose and I was like, oh. Right. Yeah. I inhaled the entire desert.
07:04Right. That's about a week for us when we get back. Oh, I bet. Yeah, I bet.
07:07Hey, man. It's so nice to meet you finally. Honored to be here. Thanks for having me.
07:10Congratulations on everything. Have fun tonight like you're not. What a stupid thing to say.
07:13Oh, yeah. I'm going to be in heaven. All right, man.
