Dasha joins John and Tammy backstage at Stagecoach.
Transcript
00:00Let's have a little cheers to you. Cheers to Dasha. Cheers to an amazing year. My God.
00:05Compared to last year when we first met you. Yeah. And to now. Insane. What a whirlwind.
00:11It's been a pretty crazy year. Yeah, a lot of love and a lot of just support from around the world.
00:16It's been so insane. You've been working very hard to earn all this. You deserve all this.
00:21But are you surprised by just the rapid nature of what's happening? Yeah, the pace really surprised
00:26me because I like I've had these dreams since I was a kid and I was kind of like delusionally
00:30confident of like it's going to happen someday. Like it has to happen. But the way in which
00:34it happened has never ceased to blow my mind because of just I don't know. I feel like the
00:40viralness of the song like really just lit a fire underneath everyone's butts and just
00:44made it this huge thing so fast. And like I understand that usually when someone has their
00:49first hit, it doesn't happen like that. You know, it's like a way slower burn. But yeah,
00:54I mean, I'm so glad it happened the way it is because I'm ready. You know, we're ready
00:58to rumble. Well, you know, they say that you are always supposed to be you called it delusionally
01:03optimistic, but I don't think that's true. You have a goal in mind of where you want to
01:06be. The problem comes is when you decide how you're going to get there. That's when you
01:11block out the universe giving you what you want. So when you just say I'm going to get
01:14there, then it's all these interesting little patterns. And there you go. Yeah, exactly.
01:18Now you're here. Yeah, I have to tell you, I loved your article in People magazine.
01:21Thank you. And it struck me your very secure, mature answer when they asked you about trailer
01:30swift. Yeah. And I loved what you said. Because you said, I think it's very creative and funny.
01:38And people could go that hurts my feelings or, you know what I mean? You weren't offended.
01:43At least seemingly it didn't to me. And I also want to defend anyone who lives in a trailer
01:47home. You know, when people try to use that as a negative, it's very upsetting to me.
01:52It is. And I so agree with that. I'm like, thank you. I really do appreciate that.
01:57We're in a trailer right now. I know. Exactly. And what's the problem? I'm having a great time.
02:01Exactly. Four walls and a door, man. It takes all kinds. And I loved your response to that.
02:07John can tell you that. I was saying, I'm so proud of how she answered that. It was so,
02:10I really was. I just think it was really good. We were talking about on the air this week,
02:14Dasha. Do you think if that would have happened last year, if this would have happened when you
02:18were at Stagecoach last year, would you have reacted the same way? Would you have had the
02:22same mindset? To Traylor Swift? Yeah. I think at the very beginning, I think yes,
02:27I would have. Honestly, I think that's more just like a character thing of like the thing about
02:31pursuing music my whole life. Like I was known as a girl who wanted to be a singer in high school
02:36and middle school. And like as much as like support I got, you also get like a lot of hate from
02:41like the mean girls in high school. And like, so I've always kind of had that juxtaposition to
02:45deal with in my life. So I feel like at a very young age, when I was 13, I put my first song,
02:49I kind of had to be like, you know what? I want this so bad. It doesn't matter what people say.
02:53And like, the more you react, like the more you're not reactive to what people hate on,
03:01the more like their words doesn't mean anything. Right. Well, you're not giving it energy.
03:06Exactly. Giving it no energy. So then they just look stupid. Right. And they just look mean.
03:10Right. And I'm like, okay, well, at least you're talking about me. Right. At least you know my
03:14name. Yes, exactly. So like having that attitude, I realized is so valuable. And my dad taught me
03:19that at a very young age. As an instigator, it's the worst for the instigator if there's no reaction.
03:23Exactly. Wait a second. You feel stupid. Why aren't you reacting to me? I'm a jerk. Totally.
03:27Also, we avoided a very potentially uncomfortable situation as I almost wore the exact same outfit
03:31you have on today. No. You have these mini hot shorts too? I mean, shockingly, I put it on.
03:37Shut up. Shut up. Didn't feel right in the hotel room. Really? Well, plus, you look like you.
03:40The blue leather was a little uncomfortable in the heat. The high boots. The high boots.
03:43And then the chafe. And it was up under the armpit. Oh, yeah. The lace top. A little too much hair.
03:48It took me a while to lace this up. I get that. I bet it did. I bet it did. Well, this could have been
03:52very awkward. So I'm glad that I made a decision. Thank God you changed. Honestly, I appreciate it.
03:55I thought shorts and t-shirt might be the best. It's my least favorite thing to match with
03:58people. God forbid. I want to match with the Patron holder on your boot. Right?
04:02I think. Is that cool? Okay. Where did you get it? So I'm staying at the Patron house
04:06here. Okay. And it was on my bed when I walked in. A little gift basket. And it was all bedazzled
04:12and girl loves to sparkle. Yeah. And I said, here we go. Yeah. Were you over a Patron house
04:16here? Well, they have all the different. Yes or no is the answer. Oh. Yeah. I'm staying at the house
04:20they throw the parties at. Yeah. Oh my goodness. So if you're at the parties, pull up to my
04:24backyard. Right. Guarantee you we won't be invited. But thank you. No. It's okay. You're
04:28inviting me. What you mean? You hit me up. I'll get you to that party. Come on. I'll be
04:34there to deliver food and then I'll be asked to leave. It's my second gig. All right.
04:38So your new single, Not At This Party. Kind of, if someone hasn't really listened to it
04:44that well, give the gist of what this song is for you. Well, when I wrote it, I got the
04:50idea. I was at a party in Nashville and I did not want to be there. I was kind of going
04:53through it mentally and I was still trying to show a face and be a good friend. I got
04:57invited to this party, but I remember standing in the corner being like, if I have another
05:01conversation, a small talk, I'm going to find a fucking bridge. Like I just can't do this.
05:05And I was like, I wanted to go home. I didn't want to be there. And I remember being in the
05:08corner, like I'm so not at this party. And then I had a light bulb go off. I'm like,
05:12that's a cool song title. So I wrote down my phone. And then a couple of weeks later,
05:15I was in a session with Ashley Gorley, the king of country hits. Yeah. He knows his finger too.
05:20A couple of things and Ben Johnson. And, um, I literally gave him my phone. I was like,
05:24you should just go through and like find a title you like. And he's like, what's not this party?
05:27And I was like, well, I told him the story and he was like, that's so cool. It's so relatable
05:31because it's not only like at a party, but you're at work or you're at some other function or
05:36whatever you're at. It's just so real to like, not want to be there and like have to face that,
05:41like mental struggle with that. And so that song just spoke to me so, so clearly. And, um,
05:47we wrote the song so fast and is it always that easy? No, but the hits are always that easy.
05:52I will say Austin was that easy. Not this party was that easy. How long did Austin take you to
05:56write? An hour and a half. No shit. Flew out of my mouth. Did your boots stop working? Literally,
06:00I have the voice memo still. I freestyled that line and everybody in the room was like,
06:04what did you just say? Yeah. And I was like, I have no idea. What did I just say?
06:08After 90 minutes, despite the fact you were brand, brand new, at least to us,
06:11you knew it was hit after 90 minutes. I had this deep gut feeling. So cool. I had this. Yeah,
06:16it was crazy. And my brother called me. I sent it to him right away and he never gasses me up
06:21without needing to be gassed up. He calls me. He's never called me about a song before. And he's
06:25like, this is the best song you have ever written your entire life. That's so great. I was like,
06:28what? What a family you have. Yeah. I got a special one. You have a gift. Yes, we do. Oh my God.
06:34We have a gift and it might, it might clash. It's not as cool as the Patrona holder on your boot,
06:38but it's good for sweating. Okay. It's good for nose blowing. If you choose,
06:42you can wear it if you'd like to as well. Oh, I think I know. Oh my God.
06:46Well, this is not a bandana. It's a John and Tam Dana. And you can't, you can't do stagecoach.
06:53Please. Right. So, I mean, you can represent, I mean, that'd be perfect. When you're somewhere,
06:59right. When you're not at this party, you can throw that on. Exactly. I'm like, sorry. You're not here.
07:03John and Tammy are here. Believe me, you flash that name, you'll get nowhere.
07:06You'll be, it'll be just what you want. Incognito mode. Thank you guys.
07:11Hey, listen, it's been so fun watching this past year for you. Main stage this year.
07:15We cannot wait, literally can't wait to see what's next for you. And just remember us when,
07:20when it happens. Of course. Come on. My family at K-Sun, you guys are the best. Thank you.
07:23Thank you guys. Yeah. All right.
