The voters of Dickson made history when they cast their ballots in this year’s federal election, causing Peter Dutton to become the first federal opposition leader to lose their seat. His margin has often been tight – and Labor has long held hope of ousting Mr Dutton from the outer-metropolitan electorate north of Brisbane – so what changed locals mind this election?

00:00In this sleepy village outside Brisbane, there's been a major shake-up.
00:08This long-time Liberal territory is now in Labor's hands.
00:14What are your thoughts on Peter Dutton losing the seat last night?
00:18I'm pretty happy about it.
00:19I guess I wasn't surprised really.
00:20Very happy when I wake up to good news this morning.
00:23So why did the voters of Dixon, north-west of Brisbane, buck a 24-year blue seat trend?
00:31Very crass, very aggressive.
00:33His ideas and policies might be good, but I think most of them didn't sell well with the public.
00:38I'm not quite sure why it's changed, but possibly Trump.
00:42You see him in the interviews and stuff, he's not really, he never come across as genuine.
00:46While many told the ABC they were concerned about the coalition's stance on nuclear,
00:51it was Dutton, the person, not his policies, that ultimately decided their vote.
00:57I think people sort of were not really prepared to put up with what appears to be bullied tactics.
01:05I think he shot himself in the foot a few times.
01:08I don't think he's been his own best friend.
01:10I don't think he's been the community's best friend.
01:12The seat of Dixon looks very different to how it did when Peter Dutton was first elected in 2001.
01:19However, electoral data shows there hasn't been a massive change in the demographic since the last federal election.
01:27Many felt that Peter Dutton served the community well as the local member, but that it was time for change.
01:34He's been a good local member for a long time, so he's done a good job for the local area.
01:40If he wasn't running for Prime Minister, I reckon he would have still kept his seat.
01:45The hope now for Dixon's future...
01:47Stability like Peter did for a long, long time.
