00:00:00Getting into the evening now here in Adelaide at the Clipsal 500 for the second race and for the
00:00:09first time a twilight race another 125 kilometers to go so the stage is set for another thrilling
00:00:16effort by these V8 supercars after race one was taken out by Jamie Winkup at Red Bull Racing
00:00:21Australia remember that we've already had qualifying for this next race Craig Lowndes
00:00:26will start on pole position Scott McLaughlin out of Volvo Polestar Racing will be on the front row
00:00:32so what do you think folks will Volvo get their first podium this evening use our viewer vote app
00:00:38on 7sport or go to v8supercars.com.au slash vote the young kiwi has already delivered in race one
00:00:47with a top 10 finish for this brand new outfit it's under the Gary Rogers motorsport banner
00:00:52and his teammate Robert Dahlgren from Sweden making his V8 supercars debut here at Adelaide Mark
00:00:59Larkin yeah you're going to try and bowl in here mate sorry to interrupt you you keep getting dressed
00:01:03will I'll keep talking to you while you're getting dressed mate um p20 in the first race uh starting
00:01:08i'm sorry p13 and starting p20 here mate you got a battle on your hands you know that
00:01:11yeah yeah it was uh it was a tough tough day uh yesterday pretty much first time i'd driven the car so
00:01:17cramming practice and qualifying in we obviously um yeah we had pretty ordinary qualifying sessions i
00:01:23just uh didn't quite get my head around the car in those short sessions so um yeah we're definitely
00:01:27coming through we had a good practice this morning and a good race before so um hopefully another clean
00:01:32one now and we can show show our real speed in the morning in qualifying look forward to watching it
00:01:36cheers mate that's pretty crazy back there cheers guys just chas most it uh buckling himself in chas
00:01:44um look not the start you wanted in race one you'll be nice and fresh for this night race yeah for sure
00:01:49ready to go i think i did about uh 20 laps in the last race so uh yeah looking forward to uh
00:01:54fresh legs and hopefully they'll help us out against all the other guys all right mate all the best out there
00:01:58thank you so chas most it wow what an opening to his campaign at ford performance racing on lap one
00:02:07goes straight into the wall big big impact and big damage but not his fault yeah we should point out
00:02:12so power steering problem there it was leaking from the get-go so jason bright was on the radio
00:02:17warning his crew to warn others that there was oil leaking and unfortunately for chas he ended up
00:02:21tripping on his own oil and had nowhere to go so another hot day here in adelaide scafee i want to ask
00:02:27you how as a driver under these conditions you're used to coming here since 1999 and doing 250k straight
00:02:33off the bat to start the season so you know that fitness has got to be up there but now we've split
00:02:38them for the first time in between we've had about an hour or so in between what would the drivers be
00:02:43focusing on just getting that fluid back into the body and being prepared for this next go yeah look
00:02:48ice baths are plenty would be the case and when you saw garth tander and james courtney after race one
00:02:54you saw the physicality of this place the guy said straight away james comment was this is the
00:02:58hardest race of the year so although it's only 125 halfway of the old distance it's still a very
00:03:06very hard task the physical nature and the sort of place this is the stress of not making a mistake
00:03:13matt makes it hard work just on garth tander there scafee a little misfire right at the top of the rev
00:03:19range for him in that last race and the front split of the air dam on that car shifted as well
00:03:24so he probably clobbered the tires down here at turn one so the combination of those things made
00:03:29life tricky for him so remember that conditions will change a lot quicker now at this stage of
00:03:36the evening as the sun gets lower the shadows get across the circuit so the temperature obviously changes
00:03:41the circuit temperature changes as well the sun will be in their eyes especially heading up towards
00:03:46turns four five and six it'll be their backs going down towards turn eight thankfully so they won't
00:03:51have to worry about that while they're going 240 odd k's into eight maddie this is absolutely superb
00:03:58it is twilight the first of the twilight races and have a look around us the sun is sinking over
00:04:03adelaide the cars are rolling out have a look how good these volvos look as they zoom past
00:04:07scotty mclaughlin and robert dalgren going past there now and up in the stands behind us here the corporate
00:04:13area here they are hanging over the rails they are loving it here this afternoon and up in the
00:04:18grandstands on either side people have ducked out got some dinner and made their way back down here to
00:04:22be a part of this historic first twilight race at the clips of 500 fellas this is going to be a great
00:04:27evening no doubt about that as the temperature drops the grip will increase i spoke to lounge they've
00:04:32stiffened up the rear of the car a little to cope with that so is shane van gisbergen it's all to play
00:04:36for maddie there's a lot going on here and a scrambled grid relative to the last prime time v8
00:04:42supercar racing coming your way race start under 10 minutes away back at the clips of 500 right
00:04:48after this break
00:04:55an electric atmosphere at the adelaide parkland circuit 79 200 people through the gates today
00:05:03look at the corporates they're packed the barry sheen grandstand here on the pit straight it's packed
00:05:08as well the sun's setting it's the first time we've ever unleashed the v8 supercar beast into the
00:05:14night for race two it will be quite a spectacle it's one of the rare places around the v8 supercar
00:05:22circuit where you can hear the crowd above the roar of the cars as they come around
00:05:28it's no wonder that this is a hall of fame event so jamie winkup the winner of race one that's david
00:05:33couch his new engineer just over to the side of the driver's door there and winkup will start from
00:05:40the second row of the grid the first row belongs to his teammate craig lounge and volvo scott mclaughlin
00:05:47jason bright much further up the grid for this second race of the day what's really going to come
00:05:52into effect is the sunlight the boys are just fiddling around here with the rinse green at the moment how do
00:05:57you think this is going to play out oh it's definitely going to be a challenge out of uh turn three there
00:06:01up wakefield road the sun's directly in your eyes and the the tear off that we had was a bit too
00:06:06peppered so we uh decided to get rid of it unfortunately the tinting is on the outside so
00:06:12they had to reapply that but it's going to be an interesting race here you know we uh we have
00:06:16qualified a bit further up was a bit disappointed with qualifying so far back the last one because
00:06:20we've got good speed so hopefully we can have a good race good luck for this one yes hey craig
00:06:26lounges if i said to you even two years ago you'd be racing a volvo to the first corner you'd say
00:06:31larko nick off you you're dreaming uh correct i think that's uh look it's been a uh wonderful
00:06:37transition for them to come into the sport obviously scotty's done a great job with the
00:06:40car the boys have done a great job getting the car up to him or for him so uh yeah but it's going to
00:06:44be interesting a good run down to turn one mate uh you've hotted the car up you're expecting a higher
00:06:48grip level with the cooler circuit a little bit tough on the tires before you and the car is a
00:06:52combo think it'll be fast enough yeah i think so i think that uh yeah we have made some tweaks for
00:06:56the car and uh you know the temperature's dropping out of the out of the track at the moment sun
00:07:00glare's going down so it's sort of uh uh we believe that with the obviously that that rubber that race
00:07:05the development cars have just been on so we predict uh faster laptops good luck buddy thank you
00:07:11here with scotty mclaughlin if i look to the right i can see larko and craig lounge if i look straight
00:07:15ahead absolutely no one scotty mclaughlin on the front row in the volvo has clear line of sight
00:07:20scotty a new toy front row of the grid you are living the dream yeah it's amazing and so happy
00:07:24for all these guys so whatever happens whatever happens happens i'm going to go out there and just
00:07:28you know give my all put the channel down and have a bit of fun hey the good news is for the
00:07:32sponsors for the very first time we are broadcasting live into sweden tonight the big question is how
00:07:37do you out drag craig lounge to turn one oh uh less uh less brake more accelerator and we'll be
00:07:44all right and hopefully get there first but uh you know he's got off the line but hopefully i can go
00:07:48better we're loving this scotty all the best mate enjoy it thank you i'm loving it too thanks
00:07:53he should be loving it he's uh made a big decision to stay with gary rogers motorsport as they changed
00:07:58over to the volvo s60s and they've instantly got results in terms of qualifying and a top 10 finish
00:08:03in race one so remember we're asking you can volvo get their first podium tonight remember they
00:08:08haven't been in the australian touring car championship for 27 years the last time they
00:08:13race at oran park 1986 john bow finished on the podium in third behind a couple of fairly good
00:08:20campaigners in fact behind a nissen and a holden george fury and peter brock ahead of him that day so
00:08:26can the swedish mark make its mark today 75 points in the bank for jamie wing cup the total points for
00:08:33winning race one jamie wing cup can i say to you mate uh that first race not just winning the race but
00:08:38congratulations on beautiful driving mate i was watching your split times that whole last
00:08:43quarter of the race and it was magnificent the car was good you're at one with it clearly you've
00:08:48sorted it out so you're in a strong position again yeah thanks like obviously louncy was coming on
00:08:52strong and um that's always the toughest place for a driver you know you're sort of like the carrot
00:08:57out there trying to try not make a mistake but happy with uh race one but um this is going to be on
00:09:02now the track's cooled down a bit sun crazy sun into turn four and turn six so see how we go yeah
00:09:08it's a hard one mate because obviously when you're working that well with the car we know the track's
00:09:11going to change uh hard decision whether do you change the car do you leave it as is yeah no we've
00:09:16had a crack we ought not have a crack we've uh we've changed it all up so fingers crossed it's quicker
00:09:21were you aware what was going on behind you shane van gisbergen had come in much later put four
00:09:25ties and we thought he'd reel you in and knock you off but uh mate you had to put your head down
00:09:29yeah no we're all over that we're all over that but um see what happens i'm sure a few more boys
00:09:34will throw four on today good luck pal yes thank you you see couch in the background there david
00:09:38couch he's saying get out of there like i get out of there
00:09:44so this is where we're playing adelaide street circuit it's been the traditional
00:09:48season opener and it will remain that way for some time yet 3.22 kilometers top speed of 245
00:09:55kilometers per hour on approach to turn eight but remember it's half a street circuit and
00:09:59half a parkland circuit so it's got all the characteristics that you have out of a street
00:10:04circuit bumps manholes painted lines concrete walls the absolute lot it's a ripper of a place
00:10:12and it's brutal and it will be different under these changing conditions into the evening
00:10:22lounge on pole second time he's had pole at this circuit he's won here five times
00:10:26okay guys i want to show you the thermal camera watch this now have a look look at that there's the
00:10:33burnout mark that's the heat that craig lounge just put into the road look at that absolutely fabulous
00:10:41now what they want to do when they come back around he wants to line his car right back on that clean
00:10:45rubber there that clean bit of tarmac and a little bit of temperature in the road very very important
00:10:51beautiful absolutely straight away lays down the heat okay let's take a look at the starting grid
00:10:58incredible valvoline racing grm on the front row of the grid in their first event back in almost three
00:11:04decades wing cup with jason bright from team boc next to him on row two mark winterbottom lee holdsworth
00:11:11the leading erebus mercedes inside the top ten we have all five makes featuring in the top ten here
00:11:17in qualifying extraordinary scott pie is already off to a good start chas most it needs to fight his way
00:11:23back after issues in race one that forced him into the wall todd kelly had his hands full in race one and
00:11:29tim slade was looking good but then it all fell away nick perkatt starting from position 13 with james
00:11:35moffat next to him got shane van gisbergen and fabian coulthard rick kelly and garth tander way back in
00:11:4218th spot for gt david reynolds dnf next to his name for the first race will davison worked his way
00:11:50through the field earlier today he'll be looking to do that again david wall and jack perkins back in
00:11:55the category after a four-year absence dale wood comes off a successful dunlop series he's got russell
00:12:01ingle next to him and that's robert dalgren out of sweden now relocated to melbourne it was a long
00:12:08time ambition for him to come here and race in our category and he knows now how hard it is he's
00:12:14married with a couple of kids he's enjoying life in australia he's trying to get his head around
00:12:18these v8 supercars chased up a couple of issues and i wondered about the steering problem that we
00:12:23reported with todd kelly car seven and it turns out that part of the steering and suspension component
00:12:29at the front of the car called the upright on both sides had broken steering clevices they were
00:12:33very lucky to get that car home the forces that go through the car across the top of that curbing
00:12:38down at turn one and two are pretty extreme they're going to have to watch that in this event massive
00:12:43understeer for rick kelly had to use first gear down at turns nine and 14 they've tidied up the
00:12:48balance on that car they hope going to this one i reported before that lots of people changing the
00:12:52rear of their cars to cope with the cooling out and the temperatures front brake locking issue for
00:12:58fabian coulthard but pretty pleased with the way things panned out for him in terms of performance
00:13:02generally speaking the ford performance racing cars locking of the front brakes and in particular a
00:13:08general instability one minute they're not sure whether it's the fronts or the rears jack perkins
00:13:12had that problem and that's giving them a little bit of grief so they'll have to be very very careful
00:13:16with that keep coming keep coming it's up there mate so what an interesting battle to the first corner
00:13:25scott mclaughlin front row of the grid on debut for volvo five manufacturers in the top seven
00:13:33guys final cars moving into position on the grid right now and if you look along down the grid you'll see
00:13:38the lineup of yellow flags as each car moves into its position the officials retract those flags so
00:13:45it's like a cascade effect they're all in green flag molly's waved it go
00:13:53in many ways it's the great unknown off they go into the twilight
00:13:57and the clips of 500. a terrific start from craig lowndes mclaughlin couldn't get it away to
00:14:05challenge him into turn one but instantly wincup gets a jump on jason bright and they start fighting
00:14:14through the first turn on the outside up here staring directly into the fading sun james courtney
00:14:22in car 22. this is where most have went into the wall in race one
00:14:28they're looking for clean track space
00:14:31most important corner on the circuit turn seven it unleashes them onto brock brock straight
00:14:39single file it's a great start from lounge all the elements of his start perfect
00:14:51the initial jump for craig was good the fight was good and the secondary component of the start was
00:14:57very strong as well so that's given him an air gap turn nine contact there between the holden racing
00:15:03team scar tander and his stable mate nick perkatt cut triple two
00:15:15very good first lap there for lounge good gap great start no mistakes a lot of pressure now being applied to mclaughlin
00:15:24from series champion jamie winkup that gap you can see is one second lounge to mclaughlin but lounge
00:15:33just burnt a curve hop the end of the first lap that's not good doesn't need to do that too early
00:15:39he needs to keep them up his sleeve for late in the race in case he needs an attack
00:15:46something happened with the start for scott mclaughlin because it had a little bobble
00:15:51and it moved and i thought that it actually had a drama then i actually thought that that turned
00:15:54the engine off so that that hurt his start so it made lounge start look a bit better this is a good
00:16:02run a good run for wincup watch for him if he gets a good run here through eight he'll look to try and
00:16:07get the car down the inside at nine tries to keep the momentum up but i tell you what there was nothing
00:16:13wrong with the mid-corner balance of the bulb but there it is the diagonal run to the inside he can't
00:16:18stop it jamie winkup and crisscrosses on mclaughlin goes toe to toe with him jamie's got the inside
00:16:23running now for 11 and holds on great exchange boys oh and he got the fence on the way out there
00:16:33that was a very good piece of driving by both guys it was a big dive bomb from winkup and looks like
00:16:39they're at that stage scott mclaughlin contemplated doing the same brights now got a little bit of a run out
00:16:45of the final corner
00:16:53saw craig lounge of james courtney have a massive accident on the running to turn 11 a few years ago
00:16:59so very easy to make contact there and when winkup and mclaughlin drove around there side by side
00:17:06very healthy level of respect very good racing quality
00:17:09very high level drive driving impressive that red bull can make their cars work on
00:17:16tires that are still coming up to temperature and pressure and yet at the back end of the tire light
00:17:22long in the run they've got very good consistency and if you look at the lap by lap of their two cars
00:17:27relative to shane van gisbergen in the previous race they really made margin in the last 10 or 15
00:17:32laps over shane it's not an easy thing to do to be quick at the start of your sequence and then hold
00:17:38that advantage late in the sequence well sometimes it's actually a bad sign if you're really fast right
00:17:42at the start you know it's going to hurt the tire and you go backwards don't you so your point is absolutely 100
00:17:48guys this is the amazing thing about this adelaide street circuit you are so close
00:17:59to the action we're here at the turn onto the main straight and you can literally reach out and touch
00:18:04the cars as they go by and this is where you get the real intensity for what is happening in this race
00:18:10and just how close these guys get nose to tail it is absolutely incredible if your chest is not
00:18:16beating if your heart's not beating out of your chest here it never will sounds like yours is barrette's
00:18:211.9 seconds the margin from lounge to win cup teammates one and two at the moment red bull racing
00:18:26australia then mclaughlin in the volvo here's jason bright applying pressure but he can't get too
00:18:32racy here and expose the rear end of that car because right behind him is mark winterbottom who in turn
00:18:37has got lee holdsworth behind in the mercedes james courtney who had way too much understeer in that
00:18:44first race he said to me he was really animated when he described it and delayed in his pit stop
00:18:49so that explains a little bit of what went on there for the holden racing team then most it
00:18:53this is a better run inside the 10 and scotty pie
00:18:56that was going to be close wow and it was the yelping you could hear in the background was the
00:19:09inside front tire of jason bright's apart from us yelping in the box it was jason bright's stunlock hard
00:19:15tire really struggling to stop there when he realized that mclaughlin was going to turn down on him
00:19:21and look at the gap that opened up as a result of that so he's going to have to do that work again
00:19:25bright that's where barrettes was just on the inside there turn 14. so mclaughlin now complaining of
00:19:34oversteer fastest lap of the race done by jamie winkup as he cuts into the deficit of his teammate craig
00:19:42lounge remember we're going to see some pit stops depending on where you are in the field here's the
00:19:47first robert dahlgren i think you'll expect to see past seven in as well todd kelly
00:20:01these are the things that he's just going to have to get used to i said to him earlier today i bet
00:20:05you it's not 30 degrees where you come from in sweden on the east coast he said yeah minus
00:20:18for our queensland viewers who are on seven mate switch back over to seven to continue watching
00:20:23the clips or 500 now
00:20:32so that's the freight train trying to reel in the red bull racing australia commodores
00:20:37there at the front and that's the job that wing cup has been doing once he made that aggression
00:20:43aggressive move on scott mclaughlin as we welcome back our queensland viewers on seven
00:20:48for prime time v8 supercar racing and wind cup just keeps chipping away with fastest laps
00:20:54and he's now got the gap to under a second here's all the stops we spoke about holdsworth courtney
00:20:59todd kelly nick percad have all come in
00:21:05courtney i hope for a cleaner one this time
00:21:08it's all right it's all right we're going all right
00:21:11wait not slides wait not slides go go go go that was neat it was a rattle gun problem in the previous
00:21:16race race good job todd kelly in and out push hard he'll have a bit of clean air
00:21:24so 0.8 is the gap between lounge and wind cup jamie did a 21.5 on that last lap and that's only a
00:21:31tenth away from the best lap in the previous race of jason bright and as the temp cools out you'll see
00:21:35the lap times improve problem here jack perkins we've seen this happen here many times it's a very tight
00:21:40pick lane he might cop a penalty for that he might have been better to try and sneak around the corner
00:21:45i would have thought so too here we go there's a bit of action here for lee holdsworth i think
00:21:52in fairness to jack there you're very much limited in terms of steering lock so he possibly has had no
00:21:59choice but to press on when he got to the paint also it's very hard we've actually seen cars in the
00:22:03little guardrail there where you just can't make it in so on the left you end up getting to the paint and
00:22:08you're gone so that's wick up in same strategy as before trying to pull the same trick as race one
00:22:13turn up rears only mate this time oh again i mean short splash of fuel is going to be very quick
00:22:21thanks mate nothing in the pit lane so far try some easy more easier than last time please
00:22:28thank you
00:22:33they've got problems they've got problems on the right hand side again
00:22:36that's took an eternity to get that off it's right underneath that commentary box window
00:22:40and there's two cars there there's courtney and holdsworth
00:23:00yep black flag for jack perkins what we saw down there on the way into pit lane so wow jamie winkup you
00:23:08really see errors out of this red bull racing team they had a similar problem with car triple eight in
00:23:14race one and this time it's happened to car number one at a crucial time he can't afford to give away any
00:23:22seconds in pit lane that's what's happened so craig lounge has a big breather out in front as the sun
00:23:30is setting his gap over scott mclaughlin now is 3.7 seconds looking out the rear and now the front
00:23:39of winkup so his job is to get back into the focus put that behind him and make up the time that he lost
00:23:47stationary in fit lane mark winner bottom
00:23:54you see there matt the grip level of the concrete is very low so he's gone by the marks by about four
00:24:00or five hundred mil then but the great thing is it didn't affect him
00:24:03that's the kind of stuff that went right for winkup in 2013 on his way to another title and went wrong
00:24:18for frosty and today that worked perfectly they got in there they did it quickly and they released him
00:24:24in the fresh air holdsworth looks strong doesn't he the color's good flows very nicely through there
00:24:29you can see the amount of curb that the guys use let's just have a look at the curb usage so that's
00:24:34turn five a lot of inside curb there for winkup and then at six a lot of curb again then a lot of exit
00:24:41curb on the little run down to seven and this exit curb operates like a motocross berm you slide the car
00:24:49out to the curb and grab it this is this great run up rock straight to one of the wildest corners of
00:24:54australian motorsport turn eight 245 kilometers an hour and 235 mid corner he got a better run at
00:25:01holdsworth and down the inside he goes stay with us this is a great battle between jamie winkup and
00:25:08craig loud's leading
00:25:17back here at clipsal and look at this crunch for james courtney in with lee holdsworth as well and the door
00:25:25has come away from its hinges on car 22 but facing the opposite way look at this he tried to thread the
00:25:32needle free does not go into that and extraordinary so the passenger side door is now left hanging open
00:25:42he was instructed to try and get alongside the wall and knock it off instead he's been given a black flag
00:25:47mechanical black flag to come in and the holden racing team sp tools crew have to go to work
00:25:54doing some running repairs by ripping the door off at no other option and now they've sent james back out
00:26:00like that and in the blue overalls behind there's the category technical manager which is frank adamson
00:26:09the yellow flag has come out and it's a safety car on course so race director tim shenkins in the
00:26:14background on the race management channel advising everybody of this uh situation with the safety car
00:26:20tander's come in but i'm a little bit surprised that frank sent the car out there with the door off it
00:26:24well i'm i'm with you the hrt mini moke at the moment i would think they'll they'll actually ask
00:26:30him to come back in and fit a door i would think
00:26:32so it's going to be uh interesting now there is what five six drivers who haven't stopped
00:26:42lounges mclaughlin coultard davison wood and ingle it's the scene of the pit paddock area here the
00:26:49corporate area and the main grandstand on the pit straight
00:26:56so lounge 4.2 second margin will evaporate
00:26:59so i believe the safety car's been activated for debris
00:27:18this is going to benefit already wink up we saw the driver with his stop but this is going to benefit
00:27:23lounge having this stop under this condition well it is mate he's going to go for two tires again like
00:27:27in his last time when we saw earlier in the day it was a bit tough putting two tires now you can
00:27:31see there they're only going to give us fuel though really this is not about fuel at all just enough
00:27:36to get him out two tires in good shape this lady in the race i reckon this is going to put him in
00:27:41really good shape the order changes the safety car out there we'll take a break what will happen next
00:27:52and eclipsal 500
00:28:00welcome back you have mr race lap because the petters chrysler safety car is still in control
00:28:06of the field after the incident involving james courtney and that door barrettes yeah this is the
00:28:12piece of metal maddie that was formerly known as james courtney's side door this is what lee holdsworth
00:28:16wheel will do to your side panel door uh there is where the rubber is contacted the wheels grinded out
00:28:20there basically popped it out and the wind pressure at that speed has done the rest of the damage so
00:28:26at the moment james courtney has the best air conditioning on the twilight race so far
00:28:30but queensland and collingwood fans will be glad to know your signage has not been damaged
00:28:37thanks barrettes yeah this is going to be interesting to watch now this is the latest safety
00:28:42car restart rule been revamped for the this year and a lot of this has come about through that really
00:28:47exciting stuff we had in the 60 60 last year so there you are the two az zones that's acceleration
00:28:52zone the leader of the pack's got to slow them up they're going to do 50 or 60 k's but they must stay
00:28:58very much in indian file no diverting from that will be allowed at all now as they come around here
00:29:05here they are bunching up okay that was a safety car you just saw peeling into the lane
00:29:09right 50 to 60 k's an hour here no faster they must be in close proximity of each other
00:29:14and jason barguana our new driving standards observer said he won't tolerate anyone pulling
00:29:19side to side out of this indian file now i'm going to listen here as craig leads them down i'm standing
00:29:25right here in the acceleration zone he can make the jump whenever he likes not yet not yet okay it's up to
00:29:31him now there he goes fire and they all go chasing and another three wide affair and scott pyke gets
00:29:42really aggressive on the restart that's him going straight over the outside of the curves
00:29:50allowance in control and here's van gisbergen oh there's got to be contact there and there was
00:29:56this time it was garth's hand and getting a nudge 10 drivers in 25 then that basically had to leap
00:30:05across the top of the curve
00:30:09winnerbottom instantly putting pressure off of lachlan
00:30:14lounge controlled that beautifully
00:30:22totally different feel in the twilight affair
00:30:26sunny down to this stage up to this stage under race conditions everybody's been pretty handy around
00:30:31this turn and everybody has been pretty aggressive at this one this is always where the action is
00:30:39great temperatures screaming at 800 degrees down at turn nine as
00:30:45drivers launch on the stop pedal and look at lounge
00:30:51so comfortable around this circuit he won the first ever race here back in 1999
00:30:56That field compression of the safety car from the debris of James' car
00:31:03has actually served Jamie Wincup reasonably well
00:31:05because that stop, the right rear, was slow for him
00:31:08and he lost a heap of ground.
00:31:10It's put him back in contact with these guys now,
00:31:12so he'll be pretty racy.
00:31:13We need to keep an eye on him with his old foe, Mark Winterbottom.
00:31:16That setting sun up Wakefield Street's a nightmare for them at the moment.
00:31:20Rhianna's got some information for us on Jason Bright on screen,
00:31:22who's down the order.
00:31:23Yeah, just quickly fill in the gaps prior to that safety car.
00:31:26Jason Bright came in for his pit stop
00:31:28and the guns were not turned on.
00:31:30The air guns were not turned on at all, so delayed significantly.
00:31:33Remember, he started from fourth position, now down in 19th.
00:31:38Yeah, I heard them apologise to him.
00:31:40That's a strange one.
00:31:41Look at that car of James Courtney's with no passenger side front door on it.
00:31:47I'm surprised they haven't been forced to correct that, but...
00:31:52A little strange.
00:31:53It's a lounge.
00:31:56Again, a very impressive restart.
00:31:581.5 second lead over McLaughlin.
00:32:01A good battle going on behind there.
00:32:04Winkup by McLaughlin.
00:32:06It's a good, strong manoeuvre.
00:32:10And Winkup will forge his way towards the back of Scott McLaughlin.
00:32:14And on that subject, the category technical managers got that call in terms of the car safety and integrity.
00:32:21And the car had a mechanical black flag come in and pull the door off James' car.
00:32:25The slightly worrying thing is, if anything were to get in the car, that's the aspect that we're concerned about.
00:32:40And there's a little bit of side intrusion protection, certainly in the driver's door.
00:32:45Not so much on the passenger side.
00:32:47It's bad up there, isn't it?
00:32:49It'll be very difficult.
00:32:50The next 10 to 15 minutes are going to be a horror story.
00:32:53Here's Courtney and Bright.
00:32:56These guys battling from 19th and 20th and exchanging paint.
00:33:00Can hardly drill a hole in the passenger's door, at least.
00:33:03But everything else, you can still have a crack at.
00:33:04This is the per-cap car, triple-two, 21st.
00:33:10Winkup all tangled up in that mess down in turn nine in race one.
00:33:15We're riding with James.
00:33:17Van Gisbergen down the inside of Coulthard.
00:33:19This is for sixth and done.
00:33:21And Fabian, I was just about to say, has been man of the match so far.
00:33:24He started way down in 16th and got to sixth, so he gained ten positions before that.
00:33:30So he's still nine spots up.
00:33:32Van Gisbergen done a great job.
00:33:33He's gained now nine positions.
00:33:36Tander has also gained nine positions.
00:33:38So there's been some very good mid-path performances from Coulthard, Van Gisbergen and Tander.
00:33:50I reckon it's great to see that man there in the Wilson security entry,
00:33:54out of Dick Johnson racing, Scott Pye, up and fighting inside the top ten after a tough 2013.
00:34:00Lowndes leads the way.
00:34:03I hope you're enjoying your Saturday night V8 supercars at the Clipsal 500 where Craig Lowndes leads this second race of the year by 1.8 seconds of the Volvo of Scott McLaughlin with Jamie Winkup.
00:34:21Mark Winterbottom chasing.
00:34:25Hey, what about this guy, Gary Rogers?
00:34:27Does he have a way of uncovering talent or what?
00:34:29Scott McLaughlin, Gary.
00:34:30Second spot at the moment, going beautifully in a brand new car.
00:34:33This is a remarkable start to the year for you guys.
00:34:35It is.
00:34:36I mean, Scott is a great driver, no doubt about it.
00:34:39And the guys have put together a fantastic car.
00:34:41And look, you know, early days, but we're feeling, you know, I mean, it's great to start the year like this.
00:34:46I mean, it's been a huge time and effort to try and get this car or these cars built.
00:34:50And it's just nice to see where we are at this stage for all those boats and that shed there.
00:34:55Well, congratulations.
00:34:56The cars look fantastic and we're loving watching the race, Gary.
00:34:59Good on you.
00:34:59Thanks very much.
00:35:00Gary's got plenty of confidence in Scott McLaughlin.
00:35:03And so, too, have our viewers saying that Scott can get Volvo their first podium this evening.
00:35:1153% in favour.
00:35:13Keep drinking.
00:35:14Keep drinking.
00:35:14Our viewer vote.
00:35:15Last time a Volvo won in the Australian Touring Car Championship was 1986.
00:35:21Robin Franskiewicz at Adelaide International Raceway.
00:35:26And race control just advised that there'll be a post-race investigation on James Courtney in that incident up at Turn 4,
00:35:32which involved Lee Holdsworth and also Scott Pye.
00:35:36On board the Volvo now, some telemetry, courtesy of Shannon's,
00:35:40to give you an understanding of the pace and the gear and the revs.
00:35:46This is the running for Turn 7.
00:35:47That little rasp in the background is the car out of breath at maximum RPM.
00:35:527,500.
00:35:53Follow that rear bar, mate, if you need to.
00:35:55Stop in the rear bar.
00:35:55A brief moment of pause in sixth gear before aiming up for that very narrow hole in Turn 8.
00:36:05The drummer we're doing the rear bar on the way up to Turn 8 is it has a big impact on the way you turn
00:36:10because it makes it softer at the back.
00:36:13So what Richard Holway said to Scott McLaughlin was tweak the rear bar if you need it,
00:36:19which means it must have a bit of oversteer, means it's battling for rear grip,
00:36:23so they want to soften it off and make it look after its tyres better.
00:36:27But when you do soften the back of the car, it doesn't respond as well when you first turn the wheel.
00:36:32And at 245 kilometres an hour at Turn 8, you want the immediate response.
00:36:37So stiffer in the rear is better for a corner like that.
00:36:40On board before with Scotty McLaughlin, you've had a glimpse also of the latest generation
00:36:45of the Motec data logging system in the car and the display that the drivers see.
00:36:50That's the latest colour screen in that car, Rihanna.
00:36:53Dick Johnson and Steve Johnson just sitting in here watching their young guy, Scott Pye,
00:36:57sitting in fifth.
00:36:58That's a career best race result, if that's how it finishes.
00:37:00Well, so far so good, but there's still, you know, 17 or 18 laps to go.
00:37:04But he's doing a fantastic job.
00:37:07Both the guys, you know, have come out of the box really well
00:37:09and I'm really pleased the way things are going.
00:37:11Thanks, Dick.
00:37:12Pleasure.
00:37:13See, that was pretty tight up there a moment ago, just as Rihanna started the discussion.
00:37:17We held our breath in that battle.
00:37:20It's on there at the moment with Shane Van Gisbergen on the attack.
00:37:23These guys are arguing over fifth and sixth.
00:37:26Scott's done a great job this weekend.
00:37:28That thing looked loose in the rear through eight.
00:37:31Back of the car sliding.
00:37:32Here comes Shane.
00:37:33Tries the diagonal down the inside.
00:37:34He's got it on the abs and all it's got in his tank.
00:37:37What a shame.
00:37:40That may...
00:37:41Oh, oh, it's not over yet.
00:37:44Oh, look at this.
00:37:44The whole world passes him by now.
00:37:47We're looking at it from the angle that we saw it as on the wrong side, really.
00:37:51But I'm not sure that Shane's far enough up to get away with that one.
00:37:55And that'll be one that Jason Barguana looks at very carefully.
00:37:57And there's Johnson family watching on.
00:38:00And Scott Pye from fifth plummets down, down, down, down, down to 21st.
00:38:07And a little bit of an each-way bet on that one, Kropo, isn't it?
00:38:10Because he knew that Van Gisbergen was coming.
00:38:13Sometimes you've just got to give that spot away.
00:38:16And at the end of the day, what it's done to him now,
00:38:19from a really healthy fifth or sixth, you know win.
00:38:22Yeah, very hard decision to make in Escafie for a young...
00:38:25There you are, look at that.
00:38:26He wasn't really far up there.
00:38:28But Scotty didn't prove anything by not giving him a bit of room
00:38:30because Scotty Wood had a great run still
00:38:32down onto the inside and the next left-hander.
00:38:34So, good little lesson for him, I reckon, mate.
00:38:36Yeah, that's exactly right, Luka.
00:38:37And you've got to learn from those ones
00:38:38because one of the things that happened with Scott last year
00:38:41is he got involved in too much of that stuff.
00:38:44And now, if the car's a bit better
00:38:46and you're operating in a little bit better area of the field,
00:38:49your race craft has to improve.
00:38:51And as he gathered it back up and things settled down,
00:38:54Scott Pyatt went even further back from 21st to 24th.
00:39:01James Mocker was seriously close to that fence in car 360.
00:39:06Went and did an endurance race at Dubai earlier in the year,
00:39:08got some valuable miles in January
00:39:09as part of the Nissan Global Motorsport Exchange program
00:39:13that they've got going.
00:39:16Very aggressive driver.
00:39:18Breakthrough win for him last year.
00:39:20We're looking at Tim Slade from the rear bumper of Rick Kelly's car.
00:39:25Really heartened that that thing had good pace in race one.
00:39:28He said, for the first time ever in the history of our team and our car,
00:39:32I feel like I'm in the game racing.
00:39:34I'm not happy to drive all over the road
00:39:35and there's straights to cover everybody.
00:39:36Just tucked in behind those guys is Will Davison.
00:39:43In fact, he's a couple ahead of Rick Kelly.
00:39:46Will's now in 11th after, again, starting back in 20th.
00:39:51So he's got that Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E63 working well,
00:39:56picking his way through the field.
00:39:58Craig Lowndes remains the man to be.
00:40:01Gee, it's tough in the driver's seat.
00:40:02Welcome back.
00:40:10It's been a long, tough day for his V8 supercar drivers.
00:40:14And there's still more to go on lap 26 out of 39.
00:40:17Very important news, Matty,
00:40:19because Shane Van Gisbergen's going to get a black flag.
00:40:21Pitlane drive-through penalty for his role in that incident down at Turn 9.
00:40:25Race director Tim Schenken just called that.
00:40:27It's gone up on the timing monitor and there he is on screen, VIP Petfoods.
00:40:32So Jason Bargwana's determined that that wasn't far enough up.
00:40:36We weren't 100% sure.
00:40:38The shot from outside for me looked like he didn't quite get there.
00:40:41I want you to pit, pit, lap straight through, mate.
00:40:43Pit, pit, lap straight through.
00:40:51So that drags him out of fifth position.
00:40:54And a good haul of points in a spot like that,
00:40:58based on what he did also in the first race.
00:41:01And this is a great battle at the moment involving David Reynolds.
00:41:04He's got a couple of curb strikes on him.
00:41:05He's got James Courtney all over him.
00:41:08And gone.
00:41:09Actually, James has a foul of a stop.
00:41:10No, they're all gone.
00:41:11They're all gone.
00:41:12There goes Lee Holdsworth.
00:41:13Just got the best free kick that he's had for a while.
00:41:16And David's been in a battle.
00:41:18Oh, he's up against the wall in that thing.
00:41:20He rubbed it.
00:41:21He had it sideways in the grass.
00:41:23And the last three or four laps for David Reynolds
00:41:26have been an absolute scramble.
00:41:28He got his ears boxed up at the western end of the circuit
00:41:32a couple of laps ago.
00:41:34And there's Shane serving that penalty.
00:41:38Well, he's gone from 14th to 20th in the last two laps.
00:41:42So that drops Van Gisbergen down into 18th position here just in front of James Courtney.
00:41:54Right in that battle group that we were just watching.
00:41:57Davey Reynolds and the three-door Commodore.
00:42:00But we were on board with Davey Reynolds.
00:42:02You can hear the rear wheels.
00:42:04Look at that out to turn 11.
00:42:05That is very lucky to get away with that one.
00:42:07That's so close.
00:42:09But we were on board.
00:42:10We heard the car battling to stop.
00:42:12And then you could see James Courtney down the inside.
00:42:15He was never going to stop either.
00:42:17So both guys off the road.
00:42:18Lee Holdsworth just drove the Mercedes around the inside and off into the distance.
00:42:21I'll bet those little paws of Davey's were frantic in there trying to gather that one up.
00:42:25There wasn't a lot of humour going on then.
00:42:29Lee Holdsworth just got a big cheer from the team boss, Betty Clamenco, too.
00:42:32That was a nice move, Betty.
00:42:34That was a great move.
00:42:35It's all in the strategy.
00:42:36Good stuff.
00:42:37Hey, tell me, Will Davison, speaking of strategy,
00:42:39landed well in the team, into the top ten at the moment.
00:42:41You must be pretty pleased with his progress.
00:42:43I am really happy with his progress.
00:42:46He's in a car that he's not used to.
00:42:48And he's just gone out there and he's done exactly what we've asked of him.
00:42:52Betty, what about your emotions about a new year?
00:42:54Are you excited to get this one going?
00:42:56Oh, more than excited.
00:42:57It's something that's...
00:42:59I haven't slept for two weeks.
00:43:00I can imagine that.
00:43:01You're a champion, Betty.
00:43:02Thanks very much.
00:43:04Betty Clamenco in charge of Erebus Motorsport.
00:43:09They donated $50,000 to the Westmead Children's Hospital on the test day at Sydney Motorsport Park.
00:43:14So, battles galore raging here as the sun sets at the Clipsal 500.
00:43:22We'll bring you back for the final stages.
00:43:24The eight supercars on seven.
00:43:33Season 2014, ten laps to go in the second race here.
00:43:38Our first ever twilight race.
00:43:39Craig Lowndes is the leader.
00:43:41He's some four seconds up the road.
00:43:43His teammate, Jamie Winkup, is putting maximum pressure on Scott McLaughlin for second position.
00:43:48McLaughlin trying to hold on to this podium spot in Volvo's first outing of Polestar Racing.
00:43:56Just starting to see signals from the back of McLaughlin's car that it's stressed.
00:44:01It's sliding around here and there.
00:44:02It's wriggling here and there.
00:44:04And if you look at the braking stability in the mid-corner pace of Winkup's car, he's stalking him at the moment.
00:44:09So, any tick of the clock, he's going to slice him.
00:44:12You'll try and sneak up the inside somewhere.
00:44:14I don't know that he'll be at this last corner, but he's been very strong traditionally here, not only this weekend, but in years five, down at turn nine, where he does that diagonal run to the apex.
00:44:24So, he'll be trying to wind himself into a position where he's close enough, he keeps the momentum, and then just goes whack.
00:44:31And he goes out of the sight in the mirror of McLaughlin.
00:44:34Now, Scott will be aware of it.
00:44:36He's got a television, too.
00:44:37He'll have seen all that in the past.
00:44:38And he's got to try and find a way to protect that.
00:44:40But I'm not sure the rear tyres are going to help him.
00:44:42Oh, Neil, and a young guy like Scotty, I mean, how good is this for conditioning for the rest of his career?
00:44:48I mean, if there's anyone you wanted to look out in the rear-view mirror and not see in your bonnet, then you've rebined, but so would be Jamie Winkup.
00:44:54As the driver in front, you're trying every little trick.
00:44:57Stop early, stop late, turn in late, turn in early.
00:45:00Everything, but you know you're not going to force Jamie to make a mistake.
00:45:03Mentally tough for this guy, and I just think tremendous conditioning for his future.
00:45:07Good exit, turn seven, McLaughlin.
00:45:09Saved that one.
00:45:10So, that's one save.
00:45:11Exactly, and they've had the fastest second sector all week.
00:45:15So, one of the things about battling like this is for Jamie to do the pass that you said, McLaughlin's got to make a little mistake.
00:45:23Either coming out of seven or through turn eight to position himself so that Winkup can challenge.
00:45:30Keep in mind that Scott's constantly adjusting his car and his mind around the conditions as well.
00:45:34In fact, if anything, he's pulled a little bit of a margin here.
00:45:37So, he'd be encouraged by Richard Holway, his engineer, to have a little play with the front and rear anti-roll bars on the car.
00:45:43He might be making tiny little adjustments for the percentage.
00:45:47Eight to go, mate.
00:45:48Eight to go, have a drink.
00:45:48That's Krusty, Richard Holway.
00:45:51Here's Gary Rogers, team owner of Volvo Polestar Racing.
00:45:54So, little tweaks percentage-wise on the front and rear brake percentage.
00:45:59So, the drivers can adjust these in a V8 supercar.
00:46:01You can't do it in your road car, but as the fuel load changes, as the grip level alters, you can change that braking treatment to your satisfaction and liking, looking for maximum performance.
00:46:11And on that lap, Scotty McLaughlin was two tenths faster than Jamie Winkup.
00:46:15Oh, big slide.
00:46:17That was turn six.
00:46:18He turned it in.
00:46:19We saw Lowndes go off the road there in the previous race.
00:46:22When Winkup turned in, then he had immediate oversteer on.
00:46:25He almost went off the road.
00:46:27And Jamie's problem, his line of sight is blocked by a car.
00:46:32He's also ingesting a big pile of hot air at the moment.
00:46:35So, hot, turbulent air from the rear of the Volvo, straight into the brake ducts on the Holden, and disturbing the front air and the front wing behaviour imbalance as well, Larco.
00:46:45Yeah, and to add to that, Neil, he's up against a car that's one of the fastest at turn eight, so he can't get on him under brakes.
00:46:50And since they've adjusted that rear bar, how beautifully does that thing put its power down?
00:46:54Now, a car not working well out there at the moment.
00:46:56Jason Bright, we expected a lot from him today, this weekend.
00:47:00He's radiated in.
00:47:01They don't know what's wrong with the car, whether it's tyres, maybe a damper.
00:47:04Nice move up the inside there, Shane Ben-Gisbergen.
00:47:07Don't know if it's a tyres, maybe a damper, maybe a broken anti-roll bar, which happens on the curbs around here.
00:47:13No explanation, but certainly off the boil and don't expect him to bounce back.
00:47:16OK, so that's a shock absorber when Larco refers to the damper, and car number 97, Shane Ben-Gisbergen, that extra position that you just saw on screen, takes him to 15th in the field.
00:47:29That's a battle pack in there, boys.
00:47:30There's a headache in that gang.
00:47:32So, all five manufacturers in the top ten.
00:47:37Will Davison in 10th.
00:47:40The lead, Nissan, is Michael Caruso in 8th.
00:47:43Garth Tander has done a great job to forge his way forward.
00:47:46So has Fabian Coulthard.
00:47:48That was a very, very good run.
00:47:50Conversely, Jason Bright not so good in this race that Mark Larkham just covered.
00:47:58This is Tim Slade attacking the back of Russell Engel.
00:48:03There's a bit of extra needle involved in that battle because that car that we're riding in at the moment was Russell's car.
00:48:10So he'll grow some extra elbow width in this process.
00:48:14He'll be making sure that Slade, he doesn't get an easy run.
00:48:17They had a great battle last year at Sydney Olympic Park at the back end of the year.
00:48:21Good pace mid-corner for Russell through turn eight there.
00:48:24And this battle here, 13th and 14th.
00:48:26Those guys are 28 seconds.
00:48:28Oh, Gizzy's in trouble.
00:48:31Slade did that on purpose, Danny.
00:48:33That was actually a very good presence of mind.
00:48:35So, Van Gisbergen had a big lunge.
00:48:38He was out of control.
00:48:39And as he was guy-waiting, Slade just helped him.
00:48:43Thighs and easy, mate. Thighs and easy.
00:48:45It was very good.
00:48:46It was a very good bit of driving.
00:48:49And when you've got that level of anticipation, just watch this.
00:48:53So, here's Van Gisbergen down there.
00:48:55He's battling to stop.
00:48:56As he's about to guy-rate, Tim's just gone,
00:48:59Thank you, I'll just turn you the other way.
00:49:00What about how far back the Giz made the commitment to that move?
00:49:04Remember, he's had to serve the pit lane penalty for an incident down here.
00:49:07Here we go.
00:49:08So, he's just going for a break.
00:49:09Watch this.
00:49:10Car on your right.
00:49:10Now it's gone.
00:49:12Drive off.
00:49:12That'll extend Russell Ingle's life, because it's just taken a bit of pressure off him as well.
00:49:18And he was well under pressure here.
00:49:21The chopper also gives us a great angle.
00:49:23So, watch this.
00:49:24The rears are locked.
00:49:26It's teetering.
00:49:27And then Tim kisses him goodnight.
00:49:29Well, there was a bit of an eagle when they were at Stone Brothers Racing River between those guys.
00:49:33He's not sending him Christmas cards anymore, Tim Slade.
00:49:37So, Jeff Slade has been on the radio to Shane Van Gisbergen and his engineer,
00:49:40and just telling him to lower his heart rate and quietly get back on with the job.
00:49:43He's down in 19.
00:49:45McLaughlin was good there.
00:49:46Did you see that little exit out of turn 11?
00:49:48Nice and straight.
00:49:49Looking after the tyres.
00:49:50And you can see, there's the lap speed comparison.
00:49:52Five to go, mate.
00:49:53Five to go.
00:49:54Richard Holloway there, coaxing young Scott to the end.
00:49:57He's only 20 years of age.
00:49:59Volvo's debut.
00:50:01He might have seen him off here.
00:50:02He's just giving himself that extra little bit of cushion.
00:50:05Jamie pushed very hard about three or four laps ago,
00:50:07and we kind of raised the tempo and the prospect of there being a change for position.
00:50:11I think it could be fading ever so slightly,
00:50:13but Winkup might be just resting the tyres a little bit,
00:50:16but he'll need to close the margin.
00:50:17And meantime, Lowndes is checking out, but the lap time,
00:50:20Scott was actually the fastest of the first three cars on that lap,
00:50:23so he's actually picked his game up a little bit.
00:50:26So the gap is four seconds, and that's pretty much how it stayed.
00:50:30The important thing for Scott McLaughlin is,
00:50:32yes, he's probably seen off Jamie Winkup for now,
00:50:35although you're never going to write Winkup off,
00:50:37but he's still got visual on the leader of the race.
00:50:40The other thing that's impressive,
00:50:41when we go on board with Scott at the moment,
00:50:43the wheel work is very gentle and deliberate.
00:50:46There's not a lot of wriggling going on.
00:50:47His steering tracers, if you looked at post-race starter,
00:50:50very deliberate, turning the car in, hitting his marks,
00:50:53releasing the lock and straightening it up.
00:50:58Car four, bad sportsmanship flag, Lee Holdsworth,
00:51:01the curb hopping down at turn two.
00:51:04McLaughlin and Lowndes have got no curb strikes.
00:51:07So if I was Richard Holloway now, you want to say,
00:51:09hey, mate, you can run across here a little bit now.
00:51:11Yeah, and you can't help but wonder,
00:51:13that little bit of breathing space Scotty has just enjoyed.
00:51:17I just wonder if that's Jamie just giving his tyres a little breather.
00:51:20Looks to me like he's ready to attack.
00:51:22Well, just as you said that, Larko, that margin's closed up again.
00:51:25So I speculated that that might be the case.
00:51:28Just rest the tyres slightly because we're now in the zone
00:51:31where we've only one kerbstrike against him for Jamie Winkup.
00:51:34He can up the pressure a bit now.
00:51:36Not much to lose him.
00:51:37He's got a big fistful of points from race one.
00:51:41Here he is.
00:51:41He's back to within a car length.
00:51:43That's enough to be a nuisance when you're in Scotts car.
00:51:45So remember the spot.
00:51:46You said it before.
00:51:47This is the important exit.
00:51:49Turn seven, run up to turn eight.
00:51:51Because you've got to get the run.
00:51:53You've got to keep the flow up.
00:51:55Winkup's not quite getting off there as well.
00:51:58Just watch this.
00:52:04Very nice, both guys.
00:52:05A little rear bar change there for Winkup.
00:52:08He's very strong under brakes.
00:52:09It's the strongest car of the field at turn nine.
00:52:13He's able to run the car in a little bit quicker late in the stop at Winkup
00:52:16because his big corner speed's a bit stronger than Scott.
00:52:18Scott's having to slow the car a little bit more.
00:52:21So Winkup's getting very close.
00:52:23If he could get a better exit off seven,
00:52:25he'd have a crack at him down there.
00:52:26But I'm not sure that he's strong enough at seven at the moment.
00:52:29I reckon this is the spot he's getting.
00:52:30I reckon he's worked out that he can't get it done at nine.
00:52:33Oh, big move.
00:52:33He locked a wheel and ran into the dirty stuff.
00:52:37That may be the thing for Scott McLaughlin now to get to the end.
00:52:42That little gap.
00:52:43The gap there now is 0.8 of a second.
00:52:46On that lap, Winkup lost about four tenths
00:52:50because it's a 22.5 versus a 22.9.
00:52:53And huge pressure and temperature here for Scott McLaughlin.
00:52:59And he is not blinking.
00:53:00So you've got Winkup all over you going into the final corner.
00:53:03Looks as though he could even give you a quick drilling as you get down there.
00:53:07And we're not seeing any faltering at all from McLaughlin.
00:53:10In fact, left rear dropped onto the dirt there for Winkup.
00:53:14That explains it a little bit more.
00:53:15But it's giving him a cushion.
00:53:16Here it is again from the back of Scottie's car.
00:53:19And I think Winkup's worked out that that's actually the spot now.
00:53:22I think that if he gets out of turn 11,
00:53:25the left-hander behind the pits,
00:53:26that the turn 13 run and the final corner
00:53:29is probably going to be a better spot than turn 9.
00:53:33Positions 4, 5 and 6 here.
00:53:35Scott McLaughlin hit that kerb on the inside really hard.
00:53:39And here comes Mostert.
00:53:41He's having a much better run in this second race than the first.
00:53:44Had a power steering drama if he weren't with our coverage earlier in the day
00:53:47in race 1 for car 6.
00:53:50On loan to Dick Johnson Racing last year.
00:53:52Joined the series for the first round of the championship
00:53:55and really made his presence felt.
00:53:56A win at Queensland Raceway.
00:53:59Drafted back into the factory squad for 2014
00:54:02when Will Davison went to Erebus Motorsport.
00:54:05He's only a car length away from his teammate Mark Witterbottom
00:54:08and Kultar was very lucky to get away with that one.
00:54:10Oh, he hit the kerb on the inside as hard as I've seen anyone all weekend.
00:54:14It bounced the car wide.
00:54:16You can see he's already hit the tyres at turn 1
00:54:18because the front air dam is dislodged.
00:54:21This will be good for Mostert's confidence, Neil.
00:54:23It's a very good run to get to where he is.
00:54:26And he knows in the race, in this particular part of today's proceedings,
00:54:30he's been every bit as fast, if not faster, than his teammate.
00:54:33Good job here, Garth Pander as well, who's a watching brief on this little pack.
00:54:38So Garth is seventh.
00:54:39Remember, he had some stripe in the first race with a little misfire
00:54:42at the top end of the rev range
00:54:43and a problem with the front wing on the car, the air dam.
00:54:47So he's gathered it up now and is in the game.
00:54:49We're watching Mark Witterbottom in the office.
00:54:50He's busy glimpsing the rearview mirror at the moment on the run to eight.
00:54:53There's going to be a drama out of this.
00:54:59Did you see, Frosty?
00:55:00There'll be a drama out of that.
00:55:03Seriously, I took a step back in the commentary box
00:55:05and he's 500 metres from me.
00:55:07That was very spooky through there
00:55:09because Koolbottom was so close to the back of his car.
00:55:11It was light.
00:55:12It makes it light in the rear end.
00:55:13It destabilises the aero.
00:55:15Here we go.
00:55:16Winkup, you're right.
00:55:17Mark, he's on him at the final corner.
00:55:19That could be the spot.
00:55:21And Jamie has been racking up curb hops.
00:55:24He's using up what he's got left over the last couple of laps.
00:55:28If you're Scott, you've got to run straight through.
00:55:29Run straight through.
00:55:31Yep.
00:55:32Did he get one?
00:55:32No, he still didn't.
00:55:34You just drive it across there.
00:55:37Extraordinary drive from this 20-year-old
00:55:38holding off a five-time series champ
00:55:41who's at the peak of his powers.
00:55:43The ride control of that Red Bull car under brakes in turn four there
00:55:46was really impressive.
00:55:47He's right on the rear bumper of the Volvo.
00:55:49These guys playing for keeps.
00:55:51Look at Winkup.
00:55:52He's all over the back of this thing.
00:55:53He's got to get an exit here as they make the run to seven.
00:55:55If he's off here cleanly and he can harass McLaughlin,
00:55:58a chance may come when they get down to turn nine.
00:56:01This is the moment.
00:56:02He's closer now on the run of the way.
00:56:04This is what he's got to do.
00:56:05Let's watch, listen and learn.
00:56:11Nothing in it.
00:56:12Move it over, Scotty.
00:56:13A bit of anything.
00:56:14McLaughlin can hold his ground there
00:56:16and Winkup is at the absolute edge of the breaking performance.
00:56:18He goes wide.
00:56:20No.
00:56:20He's trying to get underneath him.
00:56:21When they get to ten, the crowd reacts.
00:56:23This is fantastic.
00:56:26Winkup up the inside.
00:56:28McLaughlin gives him some space.
00:56:30They run.
00:56:32But the Red Bull racing man has got through.
00:56:34The champion's done the job.
00:56:36Dive down the inside.
00:56:37Down the inside.
00:56:40So close.
00:56:41What a battle.
00:56:42Unbelievable.
00:56:43Crank.
00:56:44Oh!
00:56:45He's got it.
00:56:46He's back.
00:56:47And Scott McLaughlin puts one on the champ.
00:56:50And Bolton into second on Deboe.
00:56:54Sensational, Scott McLaughlin.
00:56:56That is brilliant.
00:56:58Good job all at all.
00:56:59Absolute brilliance.
00:57:00Well done, Scott McLaughlin and Jamie Winkup.
00:57:03That's as tough as an exchange gets.
00:57:10He may have given Jamie Winkup a little bump then.
00:57:21Hey, Gary.
00:57:22Gary Rutley wants to give his boys a cuddle.
00:57:24You're right.
00:57:27That didn't work.
00:57:28Gary Rodgers, you know how tough this game is.
00:57:31Better than anyone, mate.
00:57:32What a spectacular effort by both your team and your driver.
00:57:35It was.
00:57:36It was.
00:57:36I mean, it's tough, Marco, you know.
00:57:38But just, he never gave up, mate.
00:57:41Look at you, mate.
00:57:42Good on you, mate.
00:57:42Really happy for you.
00:57:43Fantastic.
00:57:45Tears in his eyes.
00:57:47Gary loves a fighter.
00:57:48And he's got a true one in Scott McLaughlin.
00:57:51Now let's take a look at this final turn.
00:57:53So Winkup's got him.
00:57:55They rub panels.
00:57:55Scott goes on the inside.
00:57:58Winkup just went wide by himself.
00:58:01And McLaughlin put the hammer down to get second position.
00:58:05Great job.
00:58:05Wow.
00:58:06No bump and run in that.
00:58:07No drama at all.
00:58:09Look at this, guys.
00:58:09This is unbelievable.
00:58:11How Scott McLaughlin did not end up in the fence on the exit of that turn, I'll never know.
00:58:16But Jamie should be complimented for that.
00:58:18Absolutely.
00:58:19Could have fed him in.
00:58:20Absolutely.
00:58:21Great exchange.
00:58:22Brilliant motor racing.
00:58:24Total respect.
00:58:24They gave each other space.
00:58:27And that's as good a contest as you'll see.
00:58:29Look at that.
00:58:30McLaughlin had the thing wheel spinning and tail wagging in second gear when he came off turn 11.
00:58:35And watch this.
00:58:36He positions back on the race line.
00:58:38That's where the grip is.
00:58:39Traditional line.
00:58:40Makes the apex.
00:58:42Jamie picks up the throttle and slides it.
00:58:44And Scotty gets one.
00:58:46How's that?
00:58:46He's no Sunday Volvo driver.
00:58:49He's a Saturday Volvo racer.
00:58:51With a hell of a fight.
00:58:53But congratulations to Craig Lowndes.
00:58:55And Jeremy Morse.
00:58:56Our Red Bull Racing.
00:58:58Deliver a one-two punch in terms of victory.
00:59:00And this huge crowd.
00:59:0380,000 people here today.
00:59:05They've seen him.
00:59:08Well, another classic.
00:59:09Lowndes, who won the first race here in 1999, now has six race wins at this circuit.
00:59:16And this will be emotional.
00:59:18And the Red Bull team are out there to applaud Scott McLaughlin as well.
00:59:22They did.
00:59:23All of pit lane were doing this.
00:59:25This was just a fantastic reaction from the industry for Gary Rogers Motorsport and Scott McLaughlin.
00:59:31Well done, Lowndes.
00:59:3595 race wins now.
00:59:39Lowndes goes over to congratulate Scott McLaughlin because we appreciate the enormity of what he has achieved.
00:59:45But congratulations to you, Craig Lowndes.
00:59:46I mean, that's why you are the champion.
00:59:48Mate, tremendous effort.
00:59:50You end day one as the championship leader.
00:59:52Nice way to start this year.
00:59:53Yeah, thanks, Barrett.
00:59:54Yeah, look, it was great to have the first race out of the way.
00:59:57We had a great one, too.
00:59:58I was actually watching the big stream, watching these two guys going out at Hammer and Tong.
01:00:01So, luckily, I had a bit of a buffer.
01:00:03But, look, credit to the guys in Red Bull.
01:00:05We made a few tweaks over, you know, between races.
01:00:09The sun was a little bit of a worry for about five laps.
01:00:11But then, of course, it disappeared behind all the buildings and away we went.
01:00:15So, what a day.
01:00:16Those tweaks all set for tomorrow now?
01:00:19Oh, look, for sure, no doubt.
01:00:20And we've obviously got to think about a longer race, not just the sprint races.
01:00:23But, you know, the boys will do a fantastic job.
01:00:26We've got a car on one piece.
01:00:27So, look, it's all looking good.
01:00:28But I'm just going to say hello to Levi and Chile at home.
01:00:30It's looking good.
01:00:31Good on you, Loudsy.
01:00:32Congratulations.
01:00:32Come with me now, folks.
01:00:33Let's catch up with this guy as he embraces his team, Scotty McLaughlin.
01:00:37It has been a remarkable result.
01:00:40And as he just catches up with Richard and the crew, Scotty, that was incredible.
01:00:45That is going to be one of the great moments of the year.
01:00:47And you've nailed it again.
01:00:48Well done.
01:00:49Holy cow.
01:00:54Holy cow.
01:00:55Well, no, seriously, my boys, man, I can't thank them enough.
01:01:00It was amazing.
01:01:01Richard, the crew, all the fans, you guys are playing the Volvo jokes, but I guess they're
01:01:06gone now.
01:01:06So, yeah.
01:01:08So, thanks, guys.
01:01:10And, mate, this is, I've never been this happy second.
01:01:13Jesus.
01:01:14Now, just take us through the emotions for you.
01:01:16You're on the last lap.
01:01:17You've got Jamie Wincup on your tail.
01:01:19He gets by you.
01:01:20What happens then?
01:01:21And, oh, I was an idiot.
01:01:22I slowed down too much.
01:01:24So, I should have blocked him a bit better.
01:01:26But he got me.
01:01:27And then we went side by side.
01:01:28It was pretty good racing.
01:01:29And I don't know what happened on there.
01:01:31I just fucked her in first.
01:01:32Gave some gentle.
01:01:33Fuck yeah.
01:01:34Sorry.
01:01:38Sorry.
01:01:41We understand there's a level of excitement, Scott.
01:01:43Sorry.
01:01:44Sorry.
01:01:44Sorry to all the little kids out there.
01:01:47But congratulations, mate.
01:01:48I mean, and what a way to kickstart your team.
01:01:50What a way to bring Volvo into V8 Supercars.
01:01:52Volvo, Polestar, Valvoline.
01:01:54Thanks, guys.
01:01:56Hopefully we've got more of this.
01:01:58Awesome, Jill, mate.
01:01:59Congratulations, Scott.
01:01:59We'll see you on the podium.
01:02:00And, of course, Jamie Wincup, who was right there throughout it too.
01:02:03Jamie, awesome.
01:02:04That was an amazing duel you gave us.
01:02:06We were riding with you guys all the way.
01:02:08Credit to Scotty, but great effort by you as well, mate.
01:02:10Yeah, I suppose the crowd's happy.
01:02:12That's the main thing.
01:02:14We, yeah, that's what it's all about, you know.
01:02:17That's what this sprint format's all about, going hard.
01:02:19And, yeah, it went hard to the end, Scotty.
01:02:21You did a great job.
01:02:22You were hard and fair.
01:02:24Well done.
01:02:24We'll see you on the podium.
01:02:25Good on you, Jamie.
01:02:26Cheers.
01:02:28Hard and fair.
01:02:29And furious at times.
01:02:31What a finish.
01:02:32What a finish.
01:02:34These guys are out of control.
01:02:35So this is how it started.
01:02:37Lowndes was on pole position.
01:02:39Scott McLaughlin was next to him, but instantly McLaughlin found himself battling Lowndes'
01:02:43team-mate in Jamie Wincup.
01:02:45And we know how that would end.
01:02:47Richard Holway looking on.
01:02:48Jason Bright's car number eight had troubles, but not as much as James Courtney's car 22 tangled up
01:02:55with Scott Pye and Lee Holdsworth, and it became a three-door Commodore after the HRT crew had got in there and ripped it apart and gave him some fresh air for the rest of the night.
01:03:04That was a bizarre incident.
01:03:06Scott Pye was doing so well, looking at a career-best finish in the top five until he got turned around by Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:03:13And then it was on.
01:03:15McGis came firing back after serving a penalty.
01:03:19Tim Slade just pushed him out of the way.
01:03:21And this extraordinary final lap is amazing dice per second.
01:03:26As Lowndes crosses and gains the chequered flag, the entire stand went up to applaud and cheer home.
01:03:34Young Scott McLaughlin against Jamie Wincup.
01:03:36It's a wonderful story.
01:03:37Mark Winterbottom in fourth.
01:03:38Fabian Coulthard.
01:03:39Chas Mostert.
01:03:40Excellent effort.
01:03:41Good fight from Garth Tander as well in car number two.
01:03:45Midfield Russell Ingle finishes 13th.
01:03:48Van Gisbergen would end up in 16th.
01:03:50And Scottie Pye down in 20th.
01:03:52Dale Wood in the last man running with David Wall not making the finish.
01:03:56Time for the podium.
01:03:59Race two of our year.
01:04:01And would you please congratulate the winning drivers from our second race of the V8 Supercar season.
01:04:06In first place for Red Bull Racing Australia, Craig Lowndes.
01:04:13In second spot for Valvoline Racing GRM, Scott McLaughlin.
01:04:21And in third place for Red Bull Racing Australia, Jamie Wincup.
01:04:26Making the presentation to our, or receiving the trophy I should say, on behalf of the winning team from Red Bull Racing Australia, Jeremy Moore.
01:04:39Presenting the third place trophy is Mr Andrew Ford, the chairman of South Australian Motorsport Board.
01:04:45Presenting the third place trophy is Mr Jeff Timms, director of sales, Clipsal, by Schneider Electric, our major sponsor.
01:05:02Presenting to the winning team is Mark Warren, the chief executive officer of the South Australian Motorsport Board.
01:05:07And making the presentation of the first place trophy is the Honourable Leon Bignall MP, the Minister for Motorsport.
01:05:22Ladies and gentlemen, the 2014 V8 Supercars, Clipsal 500 Adelaide, race two winners.
01:05:31Another stellar drive from Craig Lowndes.
01:05:34Another gripping race this season is alive.
01:05:4295 career race wins for Lowndes.
01:05:46He'll be aiming at that century sometime this year.
01:05:49And he has the championship lead after day one of season 2014 with a second and a first.
01:05:55So five points ahead of his teammate.
01:05:57And a good bank of points for Mark Whitterbottom especially.
01:06:00So we've got all of the manufacturers inside the top ten in the championship.
01:06:07Great start to the season.
01:06:08And that's the face of a very satisfied man.
01:06:17It's Christian Dahl on the left who owns Polestar, a high performance division of Volvo.
01:06:23So they've come here to play and they've taken away a podium position.
01:06:26Race day extra, 12 o'clock, featuring the V8 Utes race three.
01:06:31That'll get us started at the Clipsal 500 tomorrow.
01:06:33And then remember we've got a top ten shootout to determine our pole position for the final 250 kilometres.
01:06:39And that will crown the 2014 Clipsal 500 champion.
01:06:44What a race.
01:06:44We hope you've enjoyed the twilight primetime V8 supercar racing.
01:06:48We'll see you tomorrow.
01:06:49We'll see you tomorrow.
01:06:50We'll see you tomorrow.
01:06:50Bye.
01:06:50Bye.
01:06:50Bye.
01:06:50Bye.
01:06:50Bye.
