The Texas Rangers made a surprising move yesterday by hiring former MLB player Bret Boone as their new hitting coach. The team has ranked near the bottom of the league in key offensive categories this season, prompting the front office to seek a fresh offensive perspective. RJ and Bobby share their initial reactions to the hire and discuss how Boone’s impressive MLB background and deep knowledge of the game could be exactly what the Rangers need to revive their struggling offense.

00:00how cool is this rj choppy it's pretty darn cool um you know it's not often that you have
00:21somebody who's been on your show for a couple years now the oh let's just he's now the hitting
00:26coach or or a coach with the team that you guys that we cover so that that's really really cool
00:32and like he's like he's first one of the first families of the sport uh it's in their blood uh
00:38there's there's like there's nothing that brett boone doesn't know about baseball that he hasn't
00:42heard you know learn from his his dad or his grandfather uncle's brother whatever you know
00:48so it's like the whole family is just immersed in this this is like the phillips family in football
00:53the bowdens you know tommy and terry and and um oh my god jimmy jimmy yeah no uh no wrong one uh but
01:03it's it's uh it's a it's a fantastic family for baseball and who knows like who knows what this
01:10is gonna do right it's a hitting coach it's about messaging he's not gonna sit there and break down
01:15and like change he's not gonna go there and tell everybody hey change your batting stance that's not
01:18how this is gonna work this is about messaging yeah and i mean look he's not even their sole
01:24hitting coach right they've got like he's co-hitting coach and then you've also got uh it's you've got
01:30the co-hitting coach and you've got an assistant hitting coach so you got three people working on
01:33them hitting um so hopefully that'll be enough to to iron out some of these issues i love it because
01:38just from getting the chance to have him on here over the last two years i think he's
01:42exactly the type of at least philosophy or view of the game that they need right now which is
01:48they've got a guy who clearly is interested in analytics and is not just oh it's my old way like
01:54he comes on here he talks to us about spin rate and all the different stat cast measurements and
01:57stuff that he thinks are important he knows he also is still like old school baseball guy yeah who
02:03just like believes in certain bochi he believes in bochi's approach yeah that's that's basically it
02:08he he's essentially the same sort of view of baseball's bochi and i i think it'll be i i think
02:13this is a good hire
