00:00It's showtime!
00:16Kendall Heider to a power display.
00:20He is still undefeated.
00:26He just might be the type of fighter who has superstar potential.
00:38Showbox, the new generation.
00:46We welcome you to a special Saturday night edition of Showbox.
00:50Tonight, from the heart of the Mojave Desert, we're in Indio, California,
00:53where the outside temperatures are on broil.
00:56And we expect inside the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino,
01:00things will be cooking as well with a triple dip on tap for you tonight.
01:05We will begin in the junior middleweight division,
01:08a scheduled 10-round fight between five-time Cuban national champion,
01:12Arislandi Lara, and upset-minded veteran, Freddy Hernandez.
01:17Then, we'll have an opportunity to see undefeated top prospect Gary Russell Jr. make his 2012 debut.
01:24He goes against Mexican import Christopher Perez.
01:27And then, it's our main event, the battle for the IBF Junior Middleweight Championship of the world.
01:33Two veterans, Cornelius Budridge, former champion Corey Spinks.
01:39And, hello again, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins.
01:45Once more, my partner, Steve Farr.
01:47Steve, two fights tonight in the 154-pound division.
01:50Without question, one of the most competitive divisions in boxing right now.
01:54And, of course, where there's great talent, that means great fights upcoming.
01:58And great fights. Make more great fights, Barry.
02:01I'll give you three reasons why the 154-pound division is so hot.
02:05Number one, Floyd Mayweather fights here. At least he did in his last fight against Cotto.
02:09Two, maybe the most charismatic young fighter in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, fights here.
02:14And, number three, Barry, there are more good young Americans in the top ten in this division than any other in boxing.
02:21So, as we take a look at my top ten, this will give you an idea of why we're excited here.
02:25Mayweather on top. When he comes out and fights again, maybe it'll be at 154.
02:28Maybe it'll be at welterweight. We'll see.
02:30Cotto, who fought Mayweather so well, he's number two.
02:33Alvarez, 21 years old. He has 41 fights already.
02:36He will fight on Showtime Championship Boxing on September 15th.
02:40You see where Lara and Bundridge are positioned.
02:43Lara waiting for his first title shot. Bundridge, 39 years old.
02:46He already has a title. And then you have the young guns.
02:49Trout, also a titleist. Looked pretty good in easily beating Delvin Rodriguez.
02:53And Vanna Smart Erosion hasn't had his shot yet.
02:56Rosado and Kirkland round out the top ten.
02:58They're both tremendous action fighters. A lot to get excited about at 154 pounds.
03:04Arislanti Lara was quoted this week as saying,
03:06If I do to Freddy Hernandez what I did to Ronald Hearns, who Lara KO'd in one round,
03:11no one will want to fight me. This is a problem.
03:14Lara made his name by dominating Paul Williams, who held the unofficial title of most avoided fighter in boxing.
03:20Maybe Lara's now assumed that role.
03:24It was seven years ago on Showbox that K-9 Bundridge was involved in the rarest of rarities, a double knockdown.
03:31He lost that fight to Sekou Pao in 22 seconds.
03:34Since then a lot's happened.
03:36K-9's received tons of exposure on the Contender Series, and more recently became a world titleist.
03:41Now at age 39 he finds himself at the right place, at the right time.
03:45And Corey Spinks is no longer mentioned as one of the best 154 pounders in the world.
03:52If that's going to change, Spinks is going to have to pull off an upset against a man who punished him and stopped him two years ago.
03:59This is my last shot, Spinks told us yesterday.
04:02Just how much is there left to give?
04:06So, two fights at 154 pounds. Both should be very entertaining.
04:11In the middle of those two fights, we get an opportunity to see a very talented featherweight by the name of Gary Russell Jr.
04:17He hasn't fought since last November.
04:19And this is a guy, now I know you, and you're not prone to hyperbole.
04:23And yet, when we talk about this guy, you don't talk about him only as a prospect.
04:26You say, maybe the single best prospect out there.
04:29Barry, speed is exciting.
04:31I was watching on the monitor a few minutes ago.
04:33Here it is on tape. Gary Russell warming up, hitting the pads with his dad.
04:37My eyes were rolling. He's so fast. That's what makes him exceptional.
04:40But there are two things I like about Gary Russell.
04:42He has a lot of hand speed, but he doesn't dance on the outside.
04:45He stands in the pocket and fights.
04:47And for a lefty, most lefties, you take their right arm, you chop it off. They don't use it.
04:50He has a tremendous right hook. Lot to like with Gary Russell Jr.
04:54So, a lot to talk about tonight on Showbox.
04:57And we turn our attention now to our first fight of the evening.
05:00It is in the 154-pound division.
05:02Arislandi Lara and the veteran, Freddie Hernandez, will be going ten rounds.
05:08Freddie Hernandez, a guy born and raised in Mexico City.
05:13He does live in Linwood, California now.
05:16He's had 34 fights.
05:18And Hernandez often has been successful in those 34 fights.
05:22Some very accomplished fighters along the way.
05:24This will be his fourth appearance here on Showbox.
05:29Back in 2010, he took on DeMarcus Chop Chop Chorley.
05:33Remember him? Former champion.
05:34And he flashed some of the power that he'd shown in the early part of his career
05:38with a highlight knockout of the former champion.
05:43Up next, there would be another former champion,
05:45Mighty Mike Enchando, who would be dispatched inside of four rounds.
05:53Well, with his swagger back in full effect,
05:55he stepped up to face undefeated champion Andre Berto,
05:58only to get stopped in the very first round.
06:01So, Hernandez scoring a big win in his last fight,
06:04the only since the November 2010 loss to Berto
06:08by upsetting former world champion Luis Colazzo.
06:11That was back in October.
06:13He's beaten the last three softballs that he's faced,
06:15two of them former champions.
06:17He's going to need all of that experience tonight.
06:19Steve, take us behind the numbers.
06:21Well, with Freddie Hernandez, Barry, two and one.
06:24Hernandez has recently faced championship-level fighters.
06:27He's had two good wins over Corley and Colazzo,
06:29and one bad loss to Berto.
06:31Wait a minute.
06:32Hernandez has fought as high as 160,
06:35but he's really a welterweight,
06:36and he's moving up a division tonight.
06:38And yesterday's KO's.
06:40Hernandez scored stoppage wins in his first 14 fights,
06:43but 10 of those victims were winless.
06:45Since then, only six stoppage wins in 19 fights.
06:49Wait a minute. I got that.
06:51I got that. That was good.
06:53Arislandi Lara, on the other hand,
06:56who'll make up the other half of this matchup
06:58as a Cuban expat, a former world champion
07:00in the amateur ranks.
07:02He is starting to mature as a professional,
07:04and he's now become a force in one of boxing's
07:06most competitive divisions.
07:08As we mentioned, he's well-schooled.
07:10He's fundamentally sound, a natural counterpuncher
07:13with speed, very good movement.
07:15His only loss was a controversial majority decision.
07:19That came against two-time welterweight champion Paul Williams,
07:24and that was last July.
07:27His only fight since then was right here on Showbox.
07:30That was in April.
07:31He took on Ronald Hearns, son of the hitman Thomas Hearns,
07:34and turned in one of the more impressive victories to date.
07:37He destroyed Hearns.
07:39Three knockdowns in just 94 seconds.
07:41Showed the power that seems to be increasing every time he goes out.
07:47So he comes off a very impressive performance,
07:50and he's now at the top of many lists
07:53as one of the very best in the division.
07:55He hopes to make another impressive statement tonight.
07:57So, Steve, once more, take us behind the numbers on Erislandy Lara.
08:01I will do, Barry, hurrying up.
08:03Round card girls don't like Lara.
08:05His six most recent KOs have all come in the first round.
08:09Slowing down.
08:10You want activity?
08:11You won't find it here.
08:12Lara's fought only one round, his KO of Hearns, in the past year.
08:16And no babying.
08:17Lara's been tested from the start.
08:19He's already been matched against five dangerous opponents.
08:21Darnell Boone, Grady Brewer, Danny Perez, Carlos Molina,
08:25and the aforementioned Williams.
08:27So, here at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino,
08:29it is our first fight of the evening.
08:31Erislandy Lara and Freddy Hernandez.
08:33It is scheduled for ten rounds in the 154-pound division.
08:37Now, for the official introduction to the fighters,
08:39we take you for the first time tonight to the center of the ring,
08:42and our ring announcer, Jake Gutierrez. Jake!
08:46Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino
08:53here in Indio, California, for Showbox, the new generation.
08:59Presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Promociones del Pueblo,
09:05Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and Showtime.
09:08Also sponsored by Corona Extra, La Cerveza Mas Fina,
09:12and AT&T, the nation's largest 4G network, AT&T Rethink Possible.
09:18The three judges for our upcoming bout will be David Denkin,
09:22Thomas Taylor, and Fritz Werner.
09:25And when the action starts, the man in charge,
09:27referee Wayne Hedgepeth.
09:32Introducing first, he'll be fighting out of the red corner.
09:35He wears the blue and orange trunks,
09:38and he weighed in at 154 and a quarter pounds.
09:41His professional record stands at 30 victories, 2 defeats, 1 no decision,
09:4620 big wins by knockout.
09:48Originally coming to us from Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico,
09:53he now fights out of Maywood, California.
09:56Ladies and gentlemen, here is the former welterweight title challenger,
09:59the hard-hitting Freddy Ariel Hernandez.
10:04And his opponent in this 10-round junior red-weight division bout,
10:11fighting out of the blue corner.
10:13He entered the ring wearing white, trimmed in gold,
10:15and he weighed in at 155 pounds.
10:18His record, 16 victories with only one defeat, including one draw,
10:2311 wins by knockout.
10:25Originally from Guantanamo, Cuba, he now fights out of Houston, Texas.
10:30Ladies and gentlemen, here is the three-time Cuban national amateur champion,
10:35and rated by the WBC number 3, IVF number 4, WBA number 5,
10:41junior middleweight contender, introducing,
10:44Addislandi, El Oro del Guantanamo, Lara!
10:58Okay, we're here.
10:59You gentlemen have received instructions in the dressing room.
11:01Obey my commands at all times and protect yourself at all times.
11:04Touch them up and come back out.
11:09A quick look here at the numbers.
11:11Hernandez, 5'10".
11:13So even though he's moving up in weight,
11:15he still has a little bit of a small height and reach advantage.
11:19But he's much better in close,
11:20and he's going to have to make this a phone booth fight.
11:22The rules, he's a California rules.
11:24No standing eight, no three-knockdown rule.
11:26Ref or doctor can stop the fight,
11:28can be saved by the bell in the last round only,
11:30and we stop it because of an accidental foul
11:33after the start of round four,
11:34scorecards before that technical draw.
11:37And with that, we are set to go
11:39with our first fight of the evening.
11:40Arislandi Lara in the white trunks,
11:43and Freddie Hernandez in the blue and gold trunks.
11:47Lara, as we said,
11:49hadn't gone more than one round in quite a while.
11:52Talked about him being a counterpuncher,
11:54but he's been very much the aggressor in recent fights.
11:57Nice combination from Lara right out of the box.
12:02Remember, Lara has all those first-round knockouts
12:04and his biggest fight for Hernandez,
12:06a first-round knockout loss.
12:07So, hold on until we finish three minutes here.
12:10Exactly. That was a good straight left a moment ago,
12:12also by Lara.
12:17Hernandez, a guy who's been around the block a little bit.
12:2032 fights. He's won 30, 20 by knockout.
12:26And he has some pop also.
12:29Well, we know what he did to Cha-Cha poorly.
12:32That was brutal.
12:37I like the fact early here that Hernandez
12:40stepping mostly to his left,
12:42which is away from Lara's big left hand.
12:44Lara's right hook is not a great punch,
12:46but his left hand can be devastating.
12:49Amateur experience, quite a mismatch here.
12:52Freddie Hernandez, he was on the Mexican national team,
12:55but you don't compare that to Lara,
12:56who was an 05 World Champ and had 330 amateur bouts.
13:01Pro experience, Freddie Hernandez has been a pro
13:05seven years longer, but only has 15 more fights.
13:07So, Lara's been pretty active since he turned four.
13:10Yeah, active, and he's been fighting
13:12eight and 10-round fights almost from the get-go.
13:14After about eight fights,
13:15he started fighting eight and 10-rounders.
13:18So, he's on a fast track,
13:21and that's largely because of the square
13:23of the 30 amateur fights you talked about.
13:25Lara just quicker in this first round.
13:28It's important for Lara to be busy.
13:32He has a tendency to just stand there sometimes
13:34with his gloves up high.
13:36Freddie Hernandez has to out-hustle him,
13:38and he's trying to do that right now.
13:41A shot to the ribs right as Hernandez stepped back,
13:43double left hand from Hernandez.
13:47And one more disclaimer before we go too far.
14:03At the fighter meeting, Valerie,
14:04you and I looked at Freddie Hernandez the wrong way,
14:06and he started bleeding.
14:07So, this is a problem he has.
14:08Has been, yeah.
14:09Also has been involved in a lot of fights
14:15where headbutts have occurred.
14:17There is a step on the right foot of Lara.
14:20That's always a pack to look for the left hand.
14:22By and large, pretty effective first round, I think, for Lara.
14:28Well, they're fighting at a distance, and I think he likes.
14:3010 seconds, up at the bell.
14:32Hernandez hasn't really gotten inside,
14:33and Lara is faster.
14:34Bring him up, bring him up.
14:35That went straight a little low.
14:37Five.
14:39He can't really call out on a feeling out round,
14:45because Lara was pretty much on the gas,
14:47and as you said, the fight was fought at his distance.
14:50Hey, beautiful round, beautiful round.
14:51That's your round, okay?
14:53Just keep doing what he's doing.
14:56When you throw the left hand,
14:58bring the hook back behind the left hand,
15:00a combination.
15:02Okay?
15:04Everything else is good.
15:06Just keep it.
15:07I want him to do this at his own pace.
15:11Actually, from round one,
15:13you have to be good to land the butt
15:15and a low blow at the same time,
15:17and that was what Lara just did.
15:21That doesn't look like it caused a cut, though.
15:24That has been an issue, as you said.
15:29Right, left, right.
15:36So we come to round two.
15:38You're the voice of Ronnie Shields,
15:40veteran trainer in the corner of Erislandi Lara.
15:51Show stats.
15:53Connect in round one,
15:5421-7 for Lara.
15:56Good body shot there by Lara.
15:59Yeah, there was a lot on that punch.
16:01Lara so far quicker and stronger.
16:06You know, it's a very important thing for Lara to look good right now,
16:16because his division's on fire,
16:18and he wants to get a big fight.
16:20Hernandez is the kind of opponent that should make him look good.
16:23Because Hernandez is busy,
16:24Lara has to fight.
16:25Nice combination right through the glove,
16:27straight ahead by Lara that time.
16:29Watch your head, watch your head!
16:31And again, a near headshot.
16:33He's got a good shot at the body.
16:34He seems to be getting to Freddie a little bit.
16:35Pretty early in this fight.
16:36Nice shot from Hernandez.
16:37And watch your head, watch your head.
16:49If there's one thing Lara has not shown yet, it's an infighting ability.
16:58There's one thing Lara has not shown yet the infighting ability. He really hasn't had to as a pro
17:03I think that's pretty Hernandez's strength. I would look for Freddy to try to get a little closer here and stay inside
17:08Yeah, I think he wants an ugly fight
17:16We talk about lara really making a career at least early on
17:19Being a counter puncher is doing some of that in this fight. A little bit better second round for Hernandez
17:28I
17:30Think Lara has respect for Hernandez and I say that because he's firing that left hand to the body more than he is to the head
17:36And that makes me believe he thinks he has to break his guy down before he can
17:40Double left hand double combination to the head that time
17:50A lot of sharpshooting him pretty well. He is and he's busy. This is the business we've seen Lara in quite a few fights
17:58Again the body. Okay, watch your head watch it
18:06That's a core punch combination for Hernandez
18:10Larry doing a good job of making himself a small package hard to hit
18:14Give you a lot of angles to that he does any despite his part right now, you know in the beginning
18:26Hernandez was happy to circle and ring center now. And this is coming forward to allow is assuming for the role of the box
18:33I
18:38To be the end the second round
18:46I'm gonna lie it's a yellow night yellow
18:48Give me the eyes, give me the eyes.
18:54Throw punches.
18:56You're smothering yourself tomorrow.
18:59He's forcing the fight, pressure on, pressure.
19:04You took a strong shot.
19:06Even if he hits you low, fight back.
19:13Action from round two, another good round for Lara.
19:15Look at the combination punching.
19:17One, two, right, left, right through the guard,
19:19as Barry described it.
19:20And then later in the round,
19:22they're in a distance, Hernandez coming forward,
19:25and a pretty nice left hook to the body
19:28because Lara was stationary,
19:30wasn't offering movement at that moment.
19:32Third round. Come on.
19:36Well, as you said, Erslandy Lara
19:38really starting to get into the conversation
19:40when you start to talk about the premier fighters
19:43at 154 pounds.
19:46And, of course, the plumb out there is Canelo Alvarez.
19:49Of course.
19:54Well, the irony there is that Canelo's at 41 fights,
19:58and Lara has had, let me check my notes there, 18 fights,
20:02yet people would say,
20:03is Canelo ready for Lara?
20:05Yeah.
20:06Well, those 300 and something amateur fights go a long way.
20:08Yeah.
20:14Well, Hernandez is doing what he needs to do, Barry.
20:16He's attacking.
20:17He's making the fight.
20:18He has no choice.
20:19He's knocking out Box Lara.
20:20Watch your footing.
20:21Watch your footing.
20:22He's knocking much.
20:23It was 25-9 in Canelo's for Lara in round two.
20:25Now, you know the other thing that strikes me too, Steve,
20:27a lot of arm punches from Hernandez.
20:30Now, there he turned on out a little bit.
20:32Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
20:35No need for none of that.
20:36Swelling under the right eye of Hernandez.
20:39He's used to that.
20:41Give your punches up, Bolton.
20:49Freak, freak!
20:53He's coming down the box.
20:54That's in a place where it could swell.
20:58Yeah, it's already swelling.
20:59Here we go.
21:02Combination against.
21:03Just straight ahead right through the gloves.
21:06And the left to the top of the head.
21:09One thing I really do like about Lara,
21:14and we mentioned it earlier,
21:15but he gives you a lot of different angles.
21:17Sometimes he's squirt up in front of you,
21:18sometimes he's off to the side.
21:19All right, let him out, let him out.
21:20Freak, freak, freak.
21:21That's behind the head for you.
21:22Well, and he's a lefty, and let's face it,
21:24that in itself is an advantage.
21:29Watch your head, watch your head.
21:30Freddy Hernandez, though,
21:31he's been in with plenty of lefties.
21:33Not new to him.
21:34But again, you can see him step on the foot of Lara.
21:38This is where Freddy belongs on the inside.
21:43That left hook to the fight is his best point.
21:45Yeah, might have gotten his attention, too.
21:51Safe to safe out of the fight's on.
21:52Yeah, the fight is on Hernandez is definitely tempoed up here.
21:55Just missed with that hook.
22:00Freak!
22:02What time?
22:05Bump.
22:09Good body shot for Hernandez.
22:15Lara answered, but he was on the ropes momentarily,
22:18first time we've really seen that.
22:22And clearly Hernandez is in the range that he wants to be in.
22:26Bucks out of there.
22:27Bucks out of there.
22:29Yeah, he does try to run Lara out of the rings.
22:31No behind there.
22:32But he's been strong enough in this weight quest to do it.
22:33That's the question.
22:34Bucks.
22:3510 seconds.
22:3610 seconds.
22:40Not sure what Hernandez was complaining about.
22:51Back here at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.
22:55But the temperature's outside right now.
22:56It's kind of a bobby 104 down from about 112 this afternoon.
23:00Was that you I saw at the pool today?
23:02Yeah, it was.
23:03I was only there because my shoes melted.
23:11This is round four.
23:15Last round, pretty competitive round.
23:21Well, Barry, I agree with you.
23:22I gave it to Hernandez.
23:23As did I.
23:24And the show stats proved that 21-19 for Hernandez.
23:27Close, but he was effective.
23:29Posted his will a little bit.
23:32Lara moving a little bit more here at the start of the fourth round.
23:39Nice, quick combination for Mara.
23:43You know, it's interesting, Barry.
23:44Both guys are using similar defenses, high guard.
23:47The reason Lara lands, his hand speed is so fast
23:50that Hernandez doesn't have time to brace for the shots,
23:53where Lara braces for the shots Hernandez throw.
23:55He's trying to rip the body.
23:56Stop punching.
23:57Yeah.
23:58Lara, much more vocal here at this fourth round.
24:02Punch the elbow.
24:03Punch the elbow.
24:04Great.
24:05Great.
24:06Stop punching.
24:07And now we've got two clinches in the last 20 seconds.
24:08Every time you see a clinch, it means probably things are going well.
24:10for Hernandez.
24:11Great.
24:12I got you.
24:13Okay.
24:14We look at the punches so far.
24:15Big advantage for Lara, but on my card, that only amounts to a 2-1 advantage in the round.
24:19That's right.
24:20I haven't scored.
24:21The box out there.
24:22Got your hands free.
24:23Got your hands free.
24:24You got your hands free.
24:25That was a good right hand by Lara.
24:26And now we've got two clinches in the last 20 seconds.
24:28Every time you see a clinch, it means probably things are going well for Hernandez.
24:30Great.
24:31I got you, okay?
24:32We look at the punches so far.
24:33Big advantage for Lara, but on my card, that only amounts to a 2-1 advantage in the round.
24:37That's right.
24:38I haven't scored all of them.
24:39Buck's out there.
24:40Buck's out there.
24:41Look.
24:42Get your hands free.
24:43You got your hands free.
24:44That was a good right hand by Lara.
24:47That's a good right hand by Lara.
24:52And good body work, too, and then he brought the right hand up.
24:58Counter-rept hand, and a good one, and that hurt Hernandez.
25:05Well, so far, at least, Freddy Hernandez showing he could take the punch of a 154-pound opponent.
25:12Very good round so far for Lara, though.
25:17Good body shot.
25:26Got a very nice adjustment made by Erislandi Lara on this round.
25:33After he allowed Hernandez to walk to him in the third round.
25:38Yeah, he got roughed up in that third round, Barry.
25:41You're right, and it really hasn't happened to all this long.
25:47Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
25:48Almost a full takedown.
25:49Come on, stop holding him like that.
25:50And Hernandez using one of my favorite punches.
25:52Touch gloves, touch gloves.
25:53Yes.
25:54Oh, puss.
25:55It's time.
25:56Not taught in too many gyms.
25:56No, that's what it's not.
25:57And it hurts when you sit.
25:58Freddy like that, Freddy.
25:59Step on his toes.
26:01If you have to step on his toes.
26:03If you have to step on his toes.
26:04He's using dirty tactics.
26:05Close that eye.
26:06Work on that eye.
26:07Work on that eye.
26:08Work on that eye.
26:09Come on, man.
26:10That's a good move.
26:11Just follow him.
26:12Throw punches.
26:13Pressure him.
26:14Oh, that's what it's not.
26:15And it hurts when you sit.
26:16It's not.
26:17It hurts when you sit.
26:18It hurts when you sit.
26:19It hurts when you sit.
26:20It hurts when you sit.
26:21It hurts when you sit.
26:22Freddy like that, Freddy.
26:24Step on his toes.
26:25If you have to step on his toes.
26:26If you have to step on his toes.
26:27You're using dirty tactics.
26:28Close that eye.
26:29Work on that eye.
26:30Work on that eye.
26:32Come on, man.
26:33It's good.
26:35Just follow him.
26:37Throw punches. Pressure him.
26:55The clothes okay?
26:59Excuse me.
27:03Keep it clean, man.
27:07So we come to round five.
27:11Stop putting your step back.
27:13Watch your heads.
27:15Earth Race said keep it clean.
27:17And right out of the box,
27:19there's a head back.
27:21There you go.
27:23That's all right there.
27:25To underline the point,
27:27that Lara had a good round four.
27:29She had the most connection in any round so far
27:31there's a fight.
27:37I want her name is to continue pressuring,
27:39but it gets out quick.
27:43Double right hand of the body,
27:45three right hands of the body.
27:47And Linda Lara staying in the inside willingly.
27:51Yeah.
27:53Yeah.
27:55Yeah.
27:57Yeah.
27:59Yeah.
28:01Yeah.
28:03I don't know what Lara was asking the referee there.
28:19I think he was indicating low blow,
28:21but the referee said to Freddie, keep him up, yeah.
28:34This is a pretty good pace, wouldn't you say, Barry?
28:36I would say, absolutely.
28:37It's a demanding fight physically.
28:41And Lorenzo, those guys, looks like he can fight all night.
28:45He's certainly very relaxed in the ring, that's for sure.
28:49Come on, keep it clean.
29:00No warning there, might have been another blow by Freddie, yeah.
29:08Lorenzo, looks like he wants to whirl Hernandez in.
29:19That's a weapon we haven't seen much of, huh?
29:23The Jazz, solid jazz.
29:29That is the good land of Hernandez's land of five,
29:31the whole fight.
29:34Now blood from the left eye of Hernandez.
29:38So swelling under the right eye, blood from the left eye,
29:41above the left eye.
29:42I hate to say it, but it was inevitable.
29:45Stop, stop, stop.
29:46That's happening.
29:47Almost all of his fights.
29:56Hernandez has to be careful with those wide shots on the inside.
29:58They are very easy to counter for Lara.
30:01One, two, three, two, three!
30:08Well, we talk about the cuts of Hernandez.
30:09He was cut over his right eye in the fight
30:11against DeMarcus Corley.
30:12He was cut over his right eye against Nicklin Lau.
30:15He was cut over his right eye against Roberto Garcia.
30:18Cut on the forehead against Ben Tacky.
30:20Cut into the right eye.
30:21Tell me what you want me to stop.
30:22Against Carson Jones.
30:24Cut over the left eye against Anthony Montoya.
30:26Cut over the right eye against Jesus Soto-Canaz.
30:28Hope he has good insurance.
30:30Or a lot of band-aids.
30:32Yeah, that's it.
30:34He's red above the eye.
30:35And we look at the show stats halfway through this fight.
30:38Jabs, well, I said Hernandez hasn't landed too many.
30:41Three of 97.
30:43And not that many jabs either for Lara.
30:46It's really been a power-punching type fight,
30:48and Lara's just a little quicker, landing more.
30:51Not necessarily to the body.
30:53Hernandez's best punch has been not hooked to the body.
30:55But in total connects, you see Lara with the advantage,
30:57and he's up four rounds to one on my card.
30:59And on mine.
31:04This fight's scheduled for 10 rounds.
31:08And a very important fight, really, for both men,
31:10because for Hernandez, almost the last hurrah kind of fight.
31:13And for Lara, a fight that can really plunge it right into the middle
31:16of a very, as we've said several times,
31:20and we'll continue to say, a very competitive one
31:22of the four-part division.
31:25Oh, exactly right.
31:26I mean, he's ranked in the top 10 by all the alphabets,
31:28so he can get a title shot at any time.
31:30He had a good, solid body shot by Lara.
31:45One of the things I really like about Lara is he seems able to adapt
31:50to the guy he's fighting.
31:51Yeah, he's certainly doing that in this fight, I believe.
32:00Nice combination.
32:01These are thudding shots, and it's really snapping back
32:04Freddy Hernandez's head.
32:05Starting to bust him up a little bit, too.
32:08The left hand and a nice spin-out move, too.
32:31Very talented
32:34And again a left hand
32:40Right over the wire
32:42Hernandez
32:43Yeah, Hernandez starting to take a real pounding
32:47You might say, why is Lara
32:48Why has he scored a KO?
32:50I mean, Andre Berto took Hernandez out in one round
32:52But you know what? Sometimes fighters just get stopped
32:54There's nothing on Hernandez's record
32:56Other than the Berto fight to suggest he has a weak chin
32:58No, that's right, especially early in a fight sometimes
33:01The fighter comes in cold
33:02All of a sudden there's a class knockdown
33:03You can't recover
33:05Wow, that right hand by right hand has just missed
33:13Yeah, it did just miss
33:14And Lara had his left hand down to the side
33:16Watch your head, watch your head
33:22I'm not sure what that was
33:27That was a jumping headbutt
33:30I would have thought that he's taking the point away from that
33:33Well, he's got Freddie aggravated
33:35He's ready to just use the four-letter word
33:37Now we'll see how Freddie fights man
33:43Not everybody fights well
33:44With their man
33:45Well, it did get the crowd's attention
34:00It got Hernandez's attention
34:01And Freddie's speaking in Spanish
34:04But I think what he's saying is stand still and let's fight
34:07Exactly
34:07That is what he did
34:15You saw Hernandez make that motion of it
34:17Like he jumped in over his head
34:18That's exactly what he did
34:19It was a foul
34:31Action from round six
34:36Hernandez missing with two shots
34:38Because Lara's defense is using his feet
34:41Stepping back out of range there
34:43Look at the balance
34:43That takes perfect balance to do what Lara did there
34:46Slip a punch, pivot
34:47And what was that?
34:48It was a left hook, a right hook, and a butt all at the same time
34:52I'm really not sure what it was, to tell the truth
34:54And I don't blame Freddie Hernandez for being upset
34:56Here it is again
34:57One, two, three, go
34:59I still don't know what it was
35:01I think maybe he was trying to initiate a clinch
35:04Could that be?
35:04Could be
35:05But
35:05Keep it clean, keep it clean
35:10There it was again
35:15That was a serious one
35:16One point
35:20So this time we will take a point away
35:22And now blood gushing
35:24One point, headbutt
35:24One point, headbutt
35:25From above the right eye
35:27Of Hernandez
35:29Let's go
35:31And Barry, I'll tell you if anything
35:33According to what I saw live
35:35I thought Hernandez actually initiated that
35:39Might have, he might have
35:40I thought I saw his head go forward
35:45Now that cut is in a position where it really could affect the fight
35:49You can see it wipe the blood away from his eye
35:56Left hand from Lara
35:58Hernandez a little out of control right now
36:01Yeah, I think he's battling a combination of emotions here
36:04He's angry, yet he's also worried about those cuts
36:06They go in the distance
36:09Well, Freddy Hernandez a lot more experience than Lara
36:11They're going to bring the doctor in here
36:13And it's a pretty nasty cut
36:16This wave is all right
36:22They say he's okay
36:25Watch your head
36:27Hernandez face just a mask of blood right now
36:35That's a right hand by Lara
36:42I think Lara's doing the right thing now, Barry
36:46It's like a basketball game
36:48He's taking a little air out of the ball now
36:49Smart, letting Hernandez's emotions calm down
36:53And not doing anything silly
36:55Yeah, I just got a pot shot of him
36:57Stick and move
36:57And not get hit
37:01Yeah, he's in control
37:03Watch your head, watch your head
37:09I got a white suit on
37:11I don't want any of this above us
37:12I hope you have a good dry queen
37:14I bet
37:14Watch your head, watch your head
37:25Watch your head, watch your head
37:27Hernandez trying, but not a lot on those punches
37:29He hasn't really figured out Lara yet
37:31Other than the hook to the body
37:33That has not been a single effective punch
37:35That Hernandez has gone through again and again
37:37Yeah, I think that's right
37:38I think that's credit to Lara
37:39He's giving it a lot of different looks
37:41Watch your head, watch your head, watch your head
37:41Three, stop punching
37:42Stop punching
37:43Punch
37:44Power punches
37:49Power punches
37:49He's 143-80
37:51Even though Hernandez has been far busier
37:54That speaks a lot about Lara's defense
37:55Watch your head, watch your head
37:57Watch your head
37:58Watch your head
37:59All right, you're standing on the move now
38:08And Hernandez's corner
38:09And he gets out of there
38:10Ten seconds
38:11Five seconds remaining
38:12No, no, no, no
38:14No, no, no
38:15Get off his neck
38:16Break
38:18Break
38:19Time
38:20Come on, man
38:26Look
38:27You gotta stop boxing
38:28How are you with me?
38:29How are you with me?
38:30How are you with me?
38:31Freddie like that, Freddie?
38:33Yeah
38:35There you go
38:37There you go
38:38Jason
38:39Put it all on the line, Freddie
38:50There have been a lot of butts in this
38:52There's a low blow by Lara
38:53In addition to the butts
38:54Stop
38:55Freddie Hernandez has been complaining
38:56Okay
38:57But
38:58But
38:59I think the last butt you're gonna see
39:00That one
39:01That one was the bad one
39:02That opened the cut in between the eyes of Hernandez
39:04Yeah
39:06Lara a little reckless there too
39:08Initially I blamed Hernandez for that final butt
39:10But
39:11Both guys really
39:12Hitting the way in the middle there
39:13That's why I would have taken a point of one
39:14Right there in the middle
39:15Yeah
39:16Can't get me that
39:17I'll let it go
39:18But if that thing opens up more
39:19And it's locked in his eye
39:21That's the problem, okay?
39:22Okay
39:23I'll let it go for now
39:24Watch it up later
39:25Watch it up later
39:26Oh
39:27Get it up
39:28Get it up
39:29Get it up
39:30Get it
39:31Get it
39:32Get it

39:52Get it
39:53Get it
39:54Get it
39:55Get it
39:56Get it
39:57the cuts not just the punch and he's got more cuts than he does jabs connecting exactly that's
40:05a problem you know he got all riled up after one of those uh butts but then that emotion left him
40:11quickly and sort of drained and now freddie and indes is taking a beating again with those left
40:15hands by the other yeah lara has been in absolute control of this fight for probably the last three
40:20three and a half rounds
40:27andrews or rather uh did lose a point in the last round
40:5068 64 with that point
40:55yeah four points on my part exactly the same hard to picture in any way it could be uh drastically
41:03different but yeah that's the optimal words
41:09can't see it this fight
41:13i think i've said that to you before and been wrong and you've said it to a lot of other partners over the
41:18years have been wrong too don't lean your head well that's right there you just saw the one punch
41:24hernandez has been pretty consistent with throwing that left hook around the right elbow of lara but he
41:29hasn't been able to land that right hand that knocked out chop chop poorly and you need that right hand
41:34against the south head don't lean your head don't lean your head
41:41you need that right hand that's right there's still absolutely game all the while his face
41:48just really gets busted up
41:50and the amateurs they have a rule you have to keep your gloves in front of your head
41:56but yeah lara certainly has not done that all night long and hernandez blinking badly now yeah that cut
42:03caused by the last hit caused by the last hit that's really bothering because it gets into his eye
42:12break break
42:16and lara's just kind of having his way here now
42:32those were all very sparring punches by hernandez
42:36it's a good effort from freddie but again lara sees all the punches coming
42:42you know i would think when you look ahead for lara
42:46i can see where a lot of people would not want to fight him and i guess it's really out of respect
42:50he's a very difficult guy even if you beat him he's hard to look good against
42:55still to come of course our main event also in the 154
42:59pound division k-9 cornelius k-9 bundridge
43:04against cory spinks bundridge having knocked spinks out the last time they hooked up manny stuart in
43:09the background they're very familiar face been working at crock gym with bundridge and
43:14well thanks man cory spinks says i'm in better shape than i've been in years
43:18who's that guy behind cory there i know that guy yeah that's his daddy leon
43:23I'm all toothed up
43:38Cory Spinks boy he's relaxed of course you'd expect that from a guy who's had 330 plus rounds of professional boxing
43:46yeah
43:51this is between both of you round nine
44:00ten round fight
44:16oh
44:22large guy will not talk about his defection from Cuba it happened in Brazil
44:29the Pan Am games and he wound up
44:32in Germany buried a German woman who speaks German and Italian he speaks Spanish
44:39and he's learning English
44:46you lean in with your head both of you
44:49and it is back to the body
44:51and yesterday Barry we both saw Lara for the first time I've seen him smile at the fighter meeting
44:55yeah he's got to do more of that he's got to sell himself a little bit more his personality
44:59and he's a very sellable guy I think
45:04and that defection that was the second time he tried to defect
45:07first time he had to go back to Cuba and they kept him off the all-way to lipids
45:10that's the only reason he doesn't have a gold medal
45:14was a world champion as an amateur
45:21and he's just having his way with Freddy Hernandez now
45:24he's not landing the jab but he is landing enough right hooks
45:27so that he's not a one-handed fighter
45:29he's not a one-handed fighter
45:30freak freak
45:31oh
45:32oh
45:34oh
45:35oh
45:36oh

46:05oh
46:06oh
46:07oh
46:08oh
46:20no doubt I mean his winning I say win over Paul Williams he lost the fight
46:24but in reality clearly that he was top five and he's definitely top five a lot
46:35of swelling over the left
46:50all right baby that's the way to box that's the way to box okay go ahead go
46:57ahead come out hey that's all put your hands up put your hands up
47:08last round all right baby looking good looking good looking good hey just boom
47:24boom okay
47:38strategy I would think they can offer in front of Hernandez's corner go out
47:44there do the best you can yeah really
47:48study effort give another number of parts of the fact that we know the blood is
47:52going into the line
47:56he's gonna go he's gonna fight he shaved
48:08I said don't do that Joe stats Hernandez has thrown a hundred and forty more
48:20punches in this fight but he's not winning it no he's not back is losing it
48:27lopsidedly I would have to think
48:31really ever since that last but that opened the most serious cut he's done
48:36it's nothing yeah
48:39watch it watch your hands in here
48:42there's a counter-punching ability
48:45good short right hand by Lyle
48:54the crowd wants to uh wants Hernandez to make one final run
48:58don't lean in with your head freak
49:00well I think the spirit is willing here
49:03good right hand counter right hand as Hernandez lunged in
49:06good right hand counter right hand as Hernandez lunged in
49:18Lyle's been incredibly effective too very high connect percentage
49:22well he's never going to be the busiest fighter but if you put a guy in with him who's aggressive
49:29he's going to bring out the best in Lyle
49:33he's extremely sharp in this shot of course got a guy in front of him who slowed down appreciably
49:39safe to say that uh flowers cruising to the finish line and Hernandez is crawling to the finish line
49:54and he's just broken it
49:57oh
50:06those painted areas when first station got sauna
50:09I've seen them be very dangerous
50:11The best remedy for that, I remember former Showtime executive for a night coke on the, yeah, something about it actually makes it a little less slippery.
50:24Imagine what it does to your stomach.
50:28Now I was punching right hook, another head cut from underneath with his punches, he's doing what he wants right now.
50:43Five seconds remaining in this one and I don't believe the outcome is in any doubt, it's over.
50:52Long night for Freddy Hernandez.
50:57As we look at Lara Barry, you and I called a fight where Ronnie Shields trained another junior middleweight, Jamal Charlo, a few nights ago.
51:05It should be almost illegal that Ronnie has two fighters in the same division, one so young and the other a veteran, both so good.
51:12That's really true, it also says stuff about Ronnie Shields.
51:15Yeah.
51:16Veteran, trainer, very good, very good with young fighters, knows how to bring a fighter along, and there is a look of a beaten man.
51:22Wow.
51:23That is some picture.
51:26You don't look like that after playing an NBA game or a major league baseball game.
51:31No, you don't.
51:32You really don't.
51:33I don't know what he's gonna feel like tomorrow morning.
51:35Not a pretty sport, is it?
51:36No.
51:37That's the face of a winner.
51:41That's the face of a winner.
51:42There we go.
51:43Let's take a look at the final show stats here, Steve.
51:48Well, I think Hernandez's face tells you a lot more than any numbers would hear, but what's interesting is that he threw 150 more punches, landed, what, 110 fewer punches than Lara did.
52:02Lara 44% connect rate.
52:05As Barry said, a high connect rate.
52:06He picked his shot beautifully, punched a little bit to the body.
52:09Only thing we didn't see much of today was the jab.
52:11Has 64% connection on power punches.
52:16And we take you up to Jake Gutierrez.
52:18Let's make it all official.
52:19Here's Jake.
