00:00The 108th edition of the Giro d'Italia got underway today in Albania, the first time this country has ever hosted the Giro d'Italia and with a testing stage at that, from Durez, the second biggest city in Albania, to a finish in the capital city Tirana, with a few complications on the way.
00:23Tom Pidcock and Egon Bernal, Antonio Tiberi, among a number of star riders making their way to Albania, including Wout van Aert, one of the favourites for the stage, along with Paul Manier and a bunch of other fast men who might fancy their chances.
00:39Primoz Roglic and Jai Hindley for Red Bull Border Hansgrohe are one of five riders in the peloton to have won the Giro d'Italia in past editions.
00:47They rolled out of Durez and out onto the 160-kilometre stage one course.
00:56Took a while for the attacks to go, but after five kilometres, a breakaway group of five riders had formed, including Alessandro Vere, Silva Monique, Taco van der Hoorn, Alessandro Tonelli and Manoeli Tarozzi of VF Group Bariani.
01:09Combination of three different teams controlling the breakaway, they went through the first intermediate sprint of the day with Alessandro Tonelli on the front for Polti visit Malta.
01:19And then shortly after that, it was the second intermediate sprint and this time Manoeli Tarozzi of VF Group Bariani took the maximum amount of points.
01:26Onto the big category two climb of Grazen then and behind in the peloton, Juana Iuzo, the victim of an innocuous looking crash and chasing back on as they wound their way up the 13-kilometre climb.
01:42Holding the breakaway at a tight distance, a couple of kilometres from the top then, it was Alessandro Tonelli who attacked to try and go clear.
01:48He was caught though and pegged back and in the end, Silva Monique of Cofidis, the Belgian climber, had enough in the locker to win the big climb of the day and to take 18 points and a firm grip on the King of the Mountains competition.
02:02On the long descent then, Alessandro Vere of Arkea B&B opened up a gap on the other riders from the original breakaway.
02:11But he was eventually joined by them as they lined themselves up on the flatter roads and the approach to the Red Bull Kilometre.
02:17An innovation at the Giro d'Italia with six bonus seconds, four and two respectively, for the first three riders over the line.
02:25And it was Tarozzi who picked up the six bonus seconds ahead of Tonelli.
02:30Then with 40 kilometres to go, the remains of the breakaway was swept up as they headed towards the first of two ascents of the Category 3 Surrell climb, a testing climb of some seven kilometres.
02:42Over the top of that, they'd already thinned the group down as they passed through the finish line and back out onto the circuit one more time for the final ascent of the Surrell climb.
02:52Lidl Trek riding for Mads Pedersen, firmly in control of the bunch.
02:56Then Israel Premiutek decided to take it up with Nick Schultz.
03:02In the meantime, some of the sprinters, including Caden Groves, was dropped.
03:04Watt van Aert looking very vulnerable close to the top, but somehow fighting his way back to regain his position in the bunch.
03:11Giulio Ciccone took Mads Pedersen and Matthias Vacek of Lidl Trek over the top of the climb and down into the descent in a much diminished group that was no bigger than about 30, 35 riders at this point, including Watt van Aert and Mads Pedersen.
03:28Keeping the pace high on the descent, a horrible crash then.
03:32A few riders brought down, but none worse than Mikel Lander of Sudar Quickstep, who suffered horrible injuries and was sadly stretched away and off the race seeking medical attention.
03:42And van Aert stuck to the wheel of Mads Pedersen.
03:45A brilliant lead out from Matthias Vacek and now he opens up his sprint.
03:49Now Mads Pedersen goes.
03:51Van Aert fighting for room on the barriers.
03:54Down the middle though, an attack from Ante Marche Wonti, but it's Pedersen who's going to hold off van Aert.
03:59Is he? Van Aert! Runs it mighty close, but Pedersen holds off the challenge of Watt van Aerts.
04:05Celebrations all round from Lidl Trek.
04:16He made his way to the podium to pull on the Malia Rosa as winner of Stage 1, head of Watt van Aerts, and Urluis Aula in third place.
04:24The Malia Rosa then defendable, probably, for Mads Pedersen tomorrow in the individual time trial.
04:33And he also leads, after one stage, the Malia Ciclamino competition ahead of Watt van Aerts.
04:39Siva Monique had enough points to hold off the challenge of Lorenzo Fortunato.
04:44He's the king of the mountains.
04:45And Francesco Pusato, with his fourth place finish, is the first white jersey of this year's Giro.
04:49The Malia Ciclamino
05:01The Malia Herald
05:03The Malia Ciclamino
