*BALCONYTV MELBOURNE - DAREBIN MUSIC FEAST SPECIALS 2012*

PRESENTED BY CASSIE WALKER

DOMINIQUE - Nineteen-year-old singer songwriter Dominique is the kind of artist that can capture your full attention within seconds of hearing one of her songs. Exposed to music from young age, Dominique was first taught to play the piano by her grandmother and over the years has developed a sound and song writing ability that is well and truly her own.
"My Grandmother was a piano teacher and a singer, she gave myself and all 3 of my sisters piano lessons every Tuesday after school. It was a way to regularly see my grandparents and to also learn a great life skill. I used to hate it back then. I never practiced and I think that disappointed my parents and grandparents quite a fair bit, but having to learn piano for the sake of AMEB exams kind of killed the fun a bit for me. However eventually I picked up the piano again when I was 16 and started teaching myself songs that I could play and sing along to at the same time. The first song I taught myself how to play on the piano was 'The Scientist' by Coldplay. I think this is where I realised that writing music and lyrics wasn't something that only these people on my television screen and radio were capable of, and so I started writing originals of my own. I think the first song I ever wrote was called 'Music's Like Home For Me' or something like that."

Citing artists such as Alanis Morisette, Coldplay and Florence & The Machine as her main influences, Dominique describes her song writing process as: "always occurring in the most inconvenient places, at the most inconvenient times. It'll be three in the morning and I'll get an idea, but be way too cold and tired to get out of bed. Or I'll be on a train during peak hour or something. That's when my phone is my best friend. I'll just type the words down and softly sing a melody into my phone and record it so I don't forget it!"

Dominique's songs are all personal and honest in nature, allowing listeners an insight into the inner workings of her mind. The songs featured on her debut EP are all packed with powerful vocals, soaring harmonies and emotion packed lyrics that are sure to resonate with a wide audience.

Dominique is now set to take on the local music scene after being signed to youth run record label Decibels Records. Throughout the recording process Dominique has worked with the likes of Jimi Maroudas (Eskimo Joe, Kimbra), Tim Coghill (Matt Corby) and Greg Arnold (Things Of Stone And Wood) to produce an EP that reflects her astounding and unique talent.

"The recording process was crazy and definitely some of the longest days of my life! But as soon as we'd finished all the recording and I had my first day off in nearly 2 months - I immediately missed it. My favourite thing about this entire recording progress was getting to work with people I adore and admire. Tom Hutchens had been an artist I had wanted to sing with ever since I'd first heard his voice, so having him feature on this EP was very exciting for me. I was also lucky enough to have the insanely talented Tim Coghill drum in all tracks on the EP. He's worked with one of my favourite Australian Artists, Matt Corby, playing drums in his band and on tour. Also having Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood) as my mentor throughout this entire process as well as having him play guitar, bass and organ on the EP, has been a life-changing experience. I have learnt so much from Greg, and owe him a life time supply of good vibes!"
Big things are in store for Dominique in the future, watch this space.
Dominique will be releasing her self-titled EP along with Mansion, Alaska at the Decibels Records Artist Showcase and Release Launch, Northcote Town Hall as part of the Darebin Music Feast on Friday 28 September.
