PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN
Although this band is very different now to how it was when I first started it and has had numerous line-up changes along the way; I wanted to use this space to reflect upon the journey so far as all of the experiences gained and people I have met along the way have all helped form important parts of this band.

Having trawled through the many pieces of paper containing song ideas, lyrics, set lists and diary entries that I found, I believe that Dinky started around the middle of the year 2000. Although there was no physical band at this point, I had begun writing some new songs that has passed the mom test (song ideas my mom would be heard singing days after I had played them her, which is how I gauged whether I should continue working on them) that I wanted to record under the moniker Dinky.

In January 2001 my best friend and songwritting partner, Paul Chapman sadly passed away. His creativity always motivated me and his inspirational words still resonate in my head today. I used music to express my thoughts and feelings at the time and as a result I started to feel a new confidence in song writing.

A few months later I felt ready to connect my ideas with a band and so I was joined by Wayne Moseley on Bass and Scott Whitten on Drums. Later in the year Henry Summers completed the line up on Keyboards. We spent the rest of the year rehearsing, writing new songs and playing live.

At the start of 2002 we begun recording some songs which would eventually form an EP entitled: Shimmy Shake a Go Go. The recording sessions were very turbulent as the tracks ended up being re-recorded in 3 different studios as we struggled to find the right sound. Commitment levels started to drop as we werent playing live or writing any new material and after 10 months in and out of studios, we still hadnt recorded anything we felt happy with. However a deadline was set in place for the EP as I had booked a backpacking trip around the world for early 2003. We hurried through and completed the EP but I was never happy with the final product so I now refer to the EP as Shimmy Shake a Demo as it seems more fitting to view it as a collection of ideas that would one day find a proper home.

I spent most of 2003 travelling and when I came back to the UK I had no desire to continue playing music. I brought a half-size Spanish acoustic guitar for my adventures thinking that I would be able to write all about my experiences away. However I found it increasingly hard to write songs and articulate all of the incredible experiences happening around me and became disheartened very quickly. Towards the end of 2004, Scott was back in contact and encouraged me to start up the band again so we recruited his brother Jim Whitten on Bass, turned the amps up to 11 and started to make some noise again.

On a beautiful summers day in 2005 we recorded a three songs with Gavin Monaghan and Andy Taylor at Magic Gardens Studios. I added some new overdubs to one of the songs from Shimmy Shake a Demo and these fours songs formed the first proper Dinky EP: I did it for the Stories I could Tell.

After a year of more writing, playing live and promoting the EP, I was eager to record a follow up. So on another beautiful summers day in 2006 we recorded three songs for a new EP to be called Lullabies for Insomnia. The songs were mixed and produced by myself and Andy Taylor. Although I consider the recordings which came out of these sessions to be some of the best music Ive ever recorded, the EP was never printed as prior to the sessions, Scott felt it was time to move on, so these recordings would be the last thing we did together as a band.

I performed solo for the next year and around mid 2007 Dinky started up again with Mark Gredzinski on drums and Wayne Moseley, from the original line up, on bass. A short while after Tony Carter joined us on Guitar.

Although the band has changed so much over the last 9 years I felt it was important to keep writing and recording under the same name as it seemed right to continue with an identity. Over the last few years we have mainly been writing new material and occasionally surface for some live shows. It feels the strongest it has ever been and it feels good to be making music again!
