FROM S.K.'s TERRACE IN CR PARK
Indigo Children is Sanchal Malhar's recording project, wherein he writes and produces the music which is then recorded and performed live featuring an extended line up, which currently consists of Jaidev Rishiyoor, Nikhil Rufus Raj and Sahil Mendiratta.
"We make music to shake your body to. We think of it as surf music, or simply, rock n roll music."
Indigo Children has been part of the Indian circuit since 2004 in different incarnations. They first found recognition playing pubs and college fests around India. These gigs brought them Nation-wide attention among the underground rock scene and built the foundations for a fan-base.
In spirit, Indigo Children are a collective of musicians whose forefathers were part of the struggle for independence from the British, a subset of which was the 'Blue Mutiny' in Bengal (1861), when farmers rebelled against the zamindars and the government and refused to farm the indigo crop which they were made to grow by force for the sake of profit for European indigo planters.
In the modern times, we in India still haven't attained liberation from foreign oppression. The music is an expression of freedom from that bourgeoisie mentality of the urban enslaved-to-money city folk. We'd like to see a resonance between the blue mutiny of 1861 and the current global movement for spiritual liberation.
We heard Zack de la Rocha when he cried, 'what does the billboard say, come and play, come and play, forget about the movement'.
