At least 12 passengers were killed in the TransAsia GE235 plane crash yesterday, February 3, 2015, near the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. The ATR-72 turboprop aircraft with 58 passengers on board was apparently flying from Taipei to the offshore island of Kinmen when it crashed into the Keelung River after hitting and slightly damaging a bridge during its fall. Air Traffic Controllers lost contact with the plane at 10:55 local time (02:55 GMT).
The fuselage is now half-submerged in the Keelung River and lying on its side. Officials say 16 people have suffered injuries, with some taken to the hospital for immediate treatment. Thirty people remain unaccounted for, and are still awaiting rescue. Out of the 58 people on board 53 are believed to be passengers and five are crew. Thirty-one of the passengers are tourists from mainland China.
