Time for Mexican Mondays again to put a little spice into our DM group.
In 1935, Narcisco Martinez and Santiago Almeida made their first recordings. Martinez is recognized as the father of the Tex-Mex (Tejano) conjunto. In the lower Rio Grande Valley, conjunto means group, and group means an accordian, bajo sexto 12 string Mexican guitar, and a string bass. A strip of land from Laredo, Texas/Nuevo Laredo, Mexico to Brownsville, Texas and north to Corpus Christi, Texas between the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers is neither US nor Mexico, but has evolved into its own little country with its own Spanglish language. US President Obama is afraid to go there to see what is happening on that border.
But you don't have to be. Come take a trip to the south Texas cantinas for some dancing and entertainment by the local ladies. Apologies to urban Spanish speakers for the title. It did not have the same meaning in the 1930s. One of the south Texas ladies, shown at 1:10 was the famous Juanita Dale Slusher from Edna, Texas, near San Antonio. Juanita was the famous Candy Barr, stripper, adult magazine model, and at underage 16, in 1951, the first porn queen. I believe that 15 minute movie may have been titled My Tale is Hot. In her defense, she was a modest stripper, never removing her cowboy hat or boots. Trouble followed her like a magnet~she was even directly involved in the JFK assassination through her boyfriend, Jack Ruby. In 1984, Texas Monthly magazine listed her, alongside Lady Bird Johnson as one of history's perfect Texan women.
Martinez' inspiration for his new style music was from the polkas, waltzes, and schottisches of the Czech and German settlers of the area. The La Cuquita Polka is a perfect example of Martinez and Almieda's fast paced Tejano style music which outran the slower paced waltzes and polkas of the local European immigrants. This record was made by the same studio that recorded last week's Carmen Y Laura Un Rato No Mas.
