▶ Women Under the Uthmani Khilafah as Seen Through the Judicial Records of the State

This video is part of the global campaign entitled,"Women and Shariah: Separating Fact from Fiction" organised by the Women's Section of the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir.

The lives of women under the Uthmani Khilafah has for many centuries been an issue of contention and controversy. Orientalists and other Western writers -- past and present -- have described the lives of women under Islamic rule in Turkey as one of servitude and low status, where they were despised, sold into marriage, and chattels of their husbands. They claimed that women were unable to manage their own property and wealth, and deprived of many basic rights, including the ability to seek justice through the courts.
It challenges this narrative of the lowly status of women under Islamic rule and the Islamic Shariah laws by presenting examples from judicial registers of Sharia courts throughout the Ottoman Khilafah and providing a glimpse of the lives that women led and the rights they enjoyed under Islamic rule.
