HOLLADAY, UTAH — A police officer was killed while responding to a car crash in Salt Lake County, Utah and another was injured in a shootout with the suspect following the accident.

The shooting took place after 18-year veteran Unified police officer Doug Barney were responding to a traffic accident in Holladay on Sunday morning.

Officer Barney spotted a man and a woman leaving the scene of the crash but as he approached the duo, the man, later identified as Cory Lee Henderson, fired a single shot, striking him in the head. Barney died later at a hospital, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Other officers encountered Henderson on a nearby street shortly afterwards which led to an exchange of gunfire. Henderson was killed during the shootout, while another officer, Jon Richey, was shot three times. He was wounded in the legs and torso, the Tribune reported.

The woman who allegedly left the scene of the crash while Henderson remains at large. Police have identified her as a person of interest.
