SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — San Bernardino gunman Syed Rizwan Farook got into a heated argument with a Jewish coworker about religion two weeks before the mass shooting that left 14 people dead on Wednesday.

Farook got into a verbal altercation at work with Nicholas Thalasinos, with whom he regularly discussed politics and religion, according to Kuuleme Stephens, a friend of Thalasinos, who told the Associated Press that she called Thalasinos while he was arguing with Farook.

Stephens told the Associated Press that while on the phone with Thalasinos she heard him say that Farook “doesn’t agree that Islam is not a peaceful religion.” She heard Farook counter that Americans don’t understand Islam, and Thalasinos responded by saying “I don’t know how to talk with him,” she said.

Thalasinos was a Messianic Jew who was passionate about pro-Israel causes. According to his wife, did have a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment and regularly ranted against it on Facebook.

It is not know if the attack was linked to the argument. But when Farook left the Christmas gathering at the social services center on Wednesday, he was reportedly in an “angered state,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
