My name is Loren Hutchins and I am a photographer from Seoul.
When you’re traveling, there are times when you want to enter into other peoples’ daily lives.
Times like these, I take the subway to Dongmyo Market.
This place has hosted a market since 500 years ago.
As more people gathered around the market it became one of Seoul’s tourist attractions through word of mouth.
A Flea Market that sells antiques and used goods open up here, almost like a scene right out of a movie.
In Korean, there’s a saying, “There’s everything except the ones that are not” Do you know this phrase?
From various electronics to used clothing, there’s everything in this place.
It really means this place sells that many various types of goods.
“How much is this?”
“2,000 Won?”
“Hello. What is this called?”
“Hahoe Mask? I’m trying to buy a gift for a friend.”
Some are buying memories and some are making new memories through my stories embedded in those memories.
Near Dongmyo market, there is another market just over a bridge.
It’s called Hwanghwak Market.
At one time it boasted nationwide popularity.
Now it has become a second hand market that mainly sells used electronics.
While walking through the market, a specific store caught my attention.
It’s a place that sells rare used cameras.
It’s full of cameras that seem older than I am.
In the market, every item has its story, and through time, that story remains as history and culture.
A daily life travel story started with a light heart.
It’s pleasant to see another side of Seoul through the market scenery that held its remnants of the past after all this time.
