01:00You can tell the boss that these jewels came from one of the oldest families in the country.
01:23They're tough to get hold of, and I want plenty of jack for them.
01:27You're doing all right, ain't you?
01:28All you gotta do is get the stuff.
01:30Where would you be if we couldn't find a market for it in the States?
01:34And where would you be if I didn't handle the Russell stock?
01:36Well, trading gab isn't getting us nothing.
01:38I'm rolling.
01:42You tell him what I said anyhow.
01:43Sure.
01:44I'll tell him.
01:45And I never saw her from that day to this.
01:56See you later, Ben.
02:26Well, why didn't you get here before sunup?
02:51I've been expecting Whiskey Wiley.
02:53He ought to be here now.
02:54McGee, Miss Fegner, and careful.
02:56One just loaf around and drift off easy.
02:58Well, maybe they're smart, and maybe it ain't.
03:01McGee says he wants more jack for that bunch.
03:03Well, he does, does he?
03:05You tell him if he ain't satisfied with this setup, get somebody else to peddle this stuff.
03:10All right.
03:41I know what I'm talking about.
03:55Eh?
03:56Now you listen to me.
03:57I said I'm working for Blackie here.
04:00Eh?
04:01I said I'm working for Blackie here.
04:04Oh.
04:05I thought you said you were driving the team for a trading post.
04:09Well, I am.
04:11Don't make sense.
04:13How can you be driving the team and working for Blackie at the same time?
04:17Well, don't you see that...
04:19That enough, Whiskey.
04:20Go on now.
04:21Now listen to me.
04:22I want to see Blackie.
04:23I want my money.
04:26Got him across to McGee last night.
04:28What about the sheriff?
04:29Steered him over watching the Triple X outfit where nothing happened.
04:32Whiskey's out there shooting off his mouth.
04:33Dark again, huh?
04:34What's he saying?
04:35Better come out and see for yourself.
04:40You know, partner, I got a chance to buy a trading post.
04:45That's why I want my money.
04:48You're going to spend it all in one place, you say?
04:51No, no.
04:52I got a chance to buy a trading post.
04:54Look, you put them up about six foot and run five strands of fire,
04:57they'd almost be hog tight.
04:59I said I got a chance to buy a trading post.
05:03How high?
05:04Ah, good.
05:05What if you want to build a place for it?
05:08Get behind the bar.
05:09I'll take care of him.
05:12Knock, sir.
05:14When Whiskey gets out of town, you know what to do.
05:17All right, buddy.
05:35How many times have I told you to stay sober on the job?
05:37Now get out of here.
05:38Come on.
05:39Get out.
05:44What's the matter, partner?
05:45This town doesn't seem to be very sociable.
05:48I'll get even with you for this.
05:52You know, that ain't a very smart way to treat your customers.
05:56Oh, move on.
05:57What'd you say?
05:58I said get out.
06:00What?
06:01Heard me.
06:04Come on.
06:10Why don't you come out and fight like a man?
06:13Eh?
06:23Business doesn't seem to be so good at the palace.
06:26Customers all coming out.
06:27Nobody going in.
06:29You're coming in, ain't you?
06:30And I'm buying the drink.
06:32Jackie.
06:40Have you forgotten that you promised to take me to your new plane?
06:43No, I know I'm a little late, sweet, but I didn't forget.
06:45Now you run along to the stable and tell me it's the buck forward,
06:47and I'll be right along.
06:50I'll be waiting.
07:02Come on in.
07:06What do you have?
07:07Sarsaparilla.
07:09Sarsaparilla?
07:11Just getting to town?
07:13Yep.
07:14Looking for anyone in particular?
07:16Oh, no one in particular.
07:18If I can find the right kind of a spread, I might settle here.
07:21Here's your sarsaparilla.
07:23Thanks.
07:24Well, here's looking at you.
07:26Here's looking at you.
07:33Oh, uh, was that the missus outside?
07:37Why?
07:39Couldn't help but notice the brooch she was wearing.
07:41What's the matter with it?
07:42Nothing.
07:43It's quite a rare piece of Mexican jewelry.
07:45Yeah?
07:46How do you know?
07:47I've seen quite a lot of it in my travels.
07:50She wouldn't happen to have the maid to it, would she?
07:53Why?
07:54I've got a girl that would like to have one just like it.
07:57Yeah, there's no maid to it, brother.
08:00As you just said, you've seen a lot of it in your travels.
08:03I'd suggest you do just that.
08:06Travel further south if you're looking for a spread.
08:09This is mostly mining country around here.
08:11Thanks.
08:23Yes, that could be.
08:25But down in my country, they treat you like a man
08:28until they find out different.
08:30Up here, they throw you out to start with.
08:33Yeah, and you're just about as sociable as the rest of them.
08:59How long have you been in Mesa City?
09:01Well, I've been here long enough to find out
09:03that we ought to trail that old man, Whiskey Wiley.
09:06He knows more than I have been able to find out.
09:09Although, I did learn that he's working for a trading post
09:12northeast of here.
09:13He didn't go northeast.
09:15He headed west into the canyon.
09:17Well, I don't know.
09:18I've never seen him before.
09:20Well, I've never seen him before either.
09:22Well, I've never seen him before either.
09:24Well, I've never seen him before either.
09:26He headed west into the canyon.
09:28I think it's best that you meet up with him.
09:30After being thrown out of the saloon,
09:32he'll talk to you freely.
09:33I'll be close by.
09:34That's a good idea.

11:57The killer back there is finished.
11:59This unfortunate old fellow is too.
12:01Well, what are our plans now, son?
12:03Well, to begin with,
12:04I want you to take this wagon into the trading post
12:06and land the job as a driver.
12:07But not until morning.
12:08That'll give me a chance to get set myself.
12:10Well, I'm going to tell the owner.
12:11You can figure that out on the way.
12:14Whistle.

13:11I wish, Benita, it could always be as peaceful.
13:14Like Pito's song.
13:16I wish so, too, Joe.
13:19You know how worried I am about you being out here
13:21all alone at night with just the old squaw?
13:23We won't be alone.
13:24Whiskey will be coming along shortly
13:26with the supply wagon.
13:27But Whiskey's so old.
13:29He's no help in times like these.
13:31The rustler's reading the answers right and left.
13:33Suppose those hombres took a notion
13:35to raid this place some night.
13:37There's nothing I can do about it, Joe.
13:39I couldn't close up and leave my friends the Navajos
13:42with no place to trade.
13:44You could marry me.
13:46And, well, we'd find somehow to keep the post open.
13:50At least I'd know you had a home at the ranch and you were...
13:53You've gone over that so often, Joe.
13:56You wouldn't be happy with that kind of an arrangement.
13:58Neither would I.
14:00Perhaps some day someone will come along and buy this place.
14:05I told Whiskey when he was in Mesa City today
14:07to put out the word that I wanted to sell.
14:10When that happens, honey, we can get married, can't we?
14:14You know, waiting around for years
14:15can be growing on me anyhow.
14:19Pedro, go home now.
14:21Very good supper.
14:23Gracias, señorita.
14:25Your song is very good, too, Pedro.
14:27Gracias, señorita.
14:28Adios.
14:29Adios.
14:30Pedro, you knew the ranchers put up reward money
14:33for the information about the rustlers.
14:35Si, I know.
14:36I look out.
14:38Adios.
14:39Adios.
14:44My foreman must have gone right over to the ranch from Mesa City.
14:47Maybe he ran across Whiskey in town and is riding back with him.
14:50Not Steve Rowland.
14:51He likes to travel fast.
14:53You know, he's one of the best foremen I've ever had.
14:56It was a smart idea of his to ride over to Mesa City
14:58to see Sheriff Halloway.
15:00If you ask me, as the United States Marshal,
15:02you should look for help.
15:03I suggested it to Steve the other day, and he laughed at me.
15:06Now, honey, you don't like Steve because he's a little rough.
15:10He didn't mean nothing except Washington's a big place
15:13and it's got lots of troubles.
15:15He doesn't got time for little folks like us.
15:20Watch yourself, honey, and adopt for strangers.
15:23I will.
15:24And I can always ring the bell and bring Mama D's son up from the Pueblo
15:27if I have any trouble, so stop worrying.
15:30Hello and love never stops worrying.
15:32Good night, honey.
15:33Good night.
15:54I wonder what's happened to Whiskey.
16:11He's never been this late before.
16:13Maybe he's drunk again.
16:15No, he promised me he wouldn't.
16:18Wiley, boss.
16:24Who is it?
16:26Jack McKenzie, ma'am.
16:27I'm a stranger in these parts.
16:29Are you Miss Bain?
16:30Yes, but I don't cater to strangers knocking on my doors
16:33this time of the night.
16:34I was hoping you might allow me to rest my horse
16:36and get some sleep.
16:37In the morning, I'd like to talk over some business with you.
16:40Business?
16:47Thank you, ma'am.
16:53Just a minute.
16:54Explain what you want.
16:56I don't blame you for being cautious in an open country like this,
17:00but all I want is just a place to sleep.
17:02You said you had some business to talk over with me.
17:04What is it?
17:06I heard in Mesa City today that you wanted to sell this place.
17:09Well, I might be interested if you'd give me a couple of days
17:13to look it over.
17:14I do want to sell, but to a party that the Navajos will accept, too.
17:17That's right, miss.
17:19That's what I meant by looking the place over.
17:21I'd like to get acquainted with them, too.
17:23That is, if we can make a deal.
17:26But I reckon that can wait till morning.
17:29Well, I guess it'll be all right.
17:32Mama D, get some blankets.
17:35Thank you, ma'am.
17:37Good night.
17:43Good night.
18:06Oh, it's you, Steve.
18:07Joe didn't think you'd be coming by this way this late,
18:09so he went on home.
18:10Who's the stranger?
18:11I'm letting him put up in the stable for the night.
18:13Oh, you are, huh?
18:14Senor.
18:19Blanket.
18:20Thank you, Mama D.
18:23Steve Rellen.
18:26Good night.
18:27Good night.
18:28You're not bedding down here, stranger.
18:31But you are piling on that horse and coming along with me.
18:34Steve Rellen, you put that gun away and mind your own business.
18:37Let him go ahead, miss.
18:38I want to hear what he has to say.
18:40You know what we think a stranger is loafing around in this range, Benita?
18:43And I think the ranchers will be mighty interested in questioning this one.
18:47Did you say ranchers?
18:48Yeah, who else would be interested in the wrestling going on around here?
18:51It seems to me you're doing an awful lot of talking in front of this young lady.
18:55And I'm backing that talk up, too.
18:57Steve.
19:03I'm sorry, miss, but there was no other way.
19:21He got just what he deserved.
19:23Pick up that gun.
19:30Now, Steve Rellen, you get back to your own range business
19:32and leave my affairs alone.
19:34Mr. McKenzie is here to buy this post.
19:47Now you go and worry Joe about your being here.
19:50Joe Raskins is the owner of the Circle J outfit.
19:54Steve Rellen is his new foreman
19:55and thinks he can boss everybody else's business.
19:58You forget that and get your rest, Mr. McKenzie.
20:00Thank you, ma'am.
20:01Good night.
20:02Good night.
20:23Found Knox dead laying in the road.
20:25Yeah?
20:26And no sign of Whiskey Wiley.
20:28Blackie's out of town with Rose.
20:30That dame again and that's all he thinks about.
20:32Another thing, I came by the post
20:33and found Benita putting up a stranger for the night.
20:35Calls himself McKenzie.
20:37I tried to take him, but he's tricky and he's fast.
20:40But he won't get off so lucky the next time I meet up with him.
20:42Benita says he's buying the place and ordered me off.
20:45Where's Joe?
20:46He rode over to Triple X.
20:48Where's your boys?
20:49Waiting for me up in Box Canyon.
20:51Now we gotta work fast.
20:52Round up the rest of that cattle and get them across.
20:54McGee will be waiting for you.
20:55See Joe in the morning.
20:56Now you know what to say and meet me up here alone.
20:59I'll get you.
21:07We're finished.
21:14That was a mighty fine breakfast.
21:16Gracias, senor.
21:17Oh, by the way,
21:18who is the George Bane out there on the sign post?
21:20Little boss.
21:21The bigger brother is died.
21:23Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
21:28Mama D, you're some cook.
21:31Gracias, senor.
21:32Muy buen hombre.
21:38Thanks for the nice breakfast, Miss Bane.
21:40Mama D goes with the post too, Mr. McKenzie.
21:43Well, that's an added inducement.
21:47You've got a lot of nice pottery here.
21:49We own a lot of that.
21:52This is an odd piece of Indian work.
21:54It is, but an Indian didn't make it.
21:56It was made by a white man.
21:57A white man?
21:58You mean a squaw man?
22:00No, he lives alone in an old hogan
22:02near the mouth of the Box Canyon.
22:04He's called Tough Harsh, but he's more peculiar than tough.
22:07Peculiar?
22:09He doesn't like people.
22:10He doesn't talk to them very much.
22:12He learned to make pottery from the Navajos
22:14and keeps pretty busy at it.
22:16Well, he sounds kind of interesting.
22:18I think I'll ride over and have a look at him.
22:25Goodbye.
22:26Miss Whiskey's coming in a wagon.
22:34That's about fine.
22:36She's my wagon man and helper, Mr. McKenzie.
22:43It looks like my wagon, but not my helper.
22:54Madam, are you the boss of this outfit?
22:57Yes, where's my driver?
22:58What happened to him?
23:00I'm sorry, ma'am.
23:01You'll have to speak a mite louder.
23:03Where's my driver?
23:04What happened to him?
23:06He's in the back of the wagon.
23:07He's dead.
23:08Shot clean through the heart.
23:10Dead?
23:11No, no, querida.
23:12A loca.
23:14Ven, hijo.
23:16Ven.
23:19No, I found him about halfway out of Mesa City, about sun up.
23:24Looked like he might have been dead quite a spell.
23:26Maybe it happened yesterday.
23:28Why?
23:29Who would want to kill Whiskey?
23:31I don't know, ma'am.
23:33Who are you, stranger?
23:35Go again, Bob.
23:36Who are you?
23:37Not so loud.
23:40You know, my name is Hopkins, Sandy Hopkins.
23:43I just come up from Texas.
23:45I was running the freight outfit of my own,
23:47but so much grief attached to it,
23:49I made up my mind to sell it and come up here
23:51and try and get a job.
24:00Where in blazes were you last night?
24:02I stayed at the Triple X Ranch.
24:03Why?
24:04What happened?
24:05Plenty.
24:06Rustlers cut our new fence and run off the whole bunch.
24:08Somebody must have spotted us when we moved them in there yesterday.
24:11I'm sorry, Joe, but we ain't got enough riders to be every place.
24:14There's something else you ought to know.
24:16It's got me puzzled.
24:17What?
24:18When I dropped by the post early last night,
24:20Benita was putting up a stranger.
24:22A stranger?
24:23Yeah.
24:24I got suspicious and was gonna turn him into the ranchers for questioning.
24:28But Benita stopped me.
24:30She's a kind of a handsome cuss.
24:32I guess he's pulling the wool over her eyes plenty.
24:34Anyhow, she run me off.
24:36Told me to mind my own business.
24:43You know, miss, if you'd be looking for a driver now,
24:45I'd like to apply for the job.
24:48He looks like he's honest.
24:50He brought your wagon in with all the store goods.
24:54What'd you say?
24:56If you want the job, I guess you can have it.
24:58Oh, you don't say.
25:00Well, thank you, miss.
25:04You can unload the stuff and bring it inside.
25:06What's that?
25:07You can unload the stuff and bring it inside.
25:09I'll get it done right away.
25:11I'll give him a hand.
25:12Thanks.
25:20Looks like we're doing all right up to now.
25:22So far, so good.
25:34Check with me tonight when I get back.
25:36All right.
25:44This is Benita.
25:45She inside.
25:49Just put it down anywhere, Mr. McKenzie.
25:57Who are you?
26:01You'll have to come again, bub.
26:02I'm a little hard of hearing.
26:03Who are you?
26:04Oh, I'm Sandy Hopkins, the new driver for this outfit.
26:10How often do you have to get your supplies?
26:12Oh, about once every month.
26:14Well, where do you deliver your pottery to?
26:16Mesa City, the same place I pick up my supplies.
26:18I see.
26:23Joe!
26:24Are you the stranger who put up here last night?
26:26Yes.
26:27Get him up.
26:28You're going to do some explaining.
26:30Who you are, where you're from, and what are you
26:32doing in this part of the country?
26:34You're coming along with me, stranger.
26:36Sure, I'll go with you, if that's what you want.
26:39I'm sorry to cause you so much trouble, Miss Bain.
26:46You better take care of this before somebody gets hurt.
26:50No, Joe, wait.
26:52I want to visit the man who makes pottery for this girl.
26:54So keep your eyes open and meet me like I said.
27:11I understand all that, Joe, but I just
27:13can't believe that Mr. McKenzie had anything to do
27:15with that rustling last night.
27:16How do you know he didn't slip out of the barn
27:18last night when you were asleep?
27:19I didn't go to sleep until late.
27:20And besides, Mr. McKenzie came here to buy this place.
27:24To buy the place?
27:26Very funny.
27:27Where did he hear about it being for sale?
27:29In Mesa City, through Whiskey.
27:32You said Whiskey was killed on his way here.
27:35Don't you see, honey, you can't take chances with strangers
27:38at all these days.
27:39When rustlers are operating like this load on us,
27:41they just don't stop at rustling, do they?
27:44No, I guess not.
27:45I'm so mixed up and worried.
27:47I wish you wouldn't take so many chances, Joe.
27:49I don't trust this Steve, even if you do.
27:51Now get that out of your pretty head.
27:53If that stranger shows around here again,
27:56send the death man after me.
28:40There's a stranger coming this way.
28:42Get back and lay low.
28:51Howdy.
29:05Howdy.
29:10Are you Mr. Harsh?
29:11Yes, I'm Harsh.
29:13Since you know my name, I reckon you know I don't like folks,
29:16especially strangers, coming around my place.
29:20My name's Jack McKenzie.

29:32Maybe Miss Bain forgot to tell you
29:34there's secrets about making this pottery,
29:36and I don't want anybody to know them.
29:38I don't aim to go into the pottery business, Mr. Harsh,
29:41so your secret is safe.
29:44But I am planning on buying the trading post,
29:47so I'll be handling some of this pottery for you,
29:49that is, if Miss Bain and I can get together.
29:52There ain't gonna be no more pottery
29:55because I'm closing up.

30:57to take care of him in his territory.
30:59Now we got a deaf guy to worry about,
31:01and a stranger called himself McKenzie.

32:36It leads right down to Harsh's Hogans.
32:38All right.
