Transcript
00:00This is the range country, where the pounding hooves of untamed horses still thunder over
00:08mountains, meadows, and canyons.
00:11Every herd has its own leader, but there is only one fury, fury, king of the wild stallions.
00:18And here in the wild west of today, hard riding men still battle the open range for a living.
00:23Men like Jim Newton, owner of the Broken Wheel Ranch, and Pete, his top hand who says he
00:28cut his teeth on a branding iron.
00:30Fury!
00:31Fury!
00:32Why all this fury is, that's the one human voice he's learned to love and obey, the voice
00:45of the boy who once saved his life, Jim Newton's boy, Joey.
00:55Here's a mutual trust and affection that everyone can understand, especially a woman like Helen
01:12Watkins, Joey's school teacher and unfailing champion.
01:17Now kneel down and let me get on you.
01:25And there they are together, a great wild horse and the only person on earth who can
01:30ride him, Joey and Fury.
01:35Take it easy.
01:46Yeah, I think he smells something.
01:47Give him his head.
02:04Doesn't a fence mean anything to you, mister?
02:30Oh, I'm sorry.
02:31I was trying for a shortcut to those hills over there.
02:33Well, those hills have been there a long time.
02:35What's your hurry?
02:36Oh, they're a hot spot in the new uranium map issue today.
02:38I was hoping to beat the rush.
02:40By cutting your way across my ranch and letting my stock run loose, huh?
02:43Oh, I was going to mend the wire as soon as we went through.
02:45But those horses beat us to it.
02:47I'll take your word for that.
02:48Now turn your rig around and get back on the road.
02:50It'll take me two days that way.
02:52I'll be too late to stake a claim.
02:54It'll take me two days to round up those horses.
02:56Now get going.
02:57That way.
03:00And if I don't?
03:01Well, if you don't, the sheriff will meet you on the other side of my property.
03:04And cutting a fence in this country will cost you 60 days.
03:21What's the matter, Joey?
03:22Nothing, Jim.
03:23I was just wondering.
03:25As long as the fence was cut, would it have hurt to let them go through?
03:28If I let them go through, then I'm inviting all the other prospectors to go through, too.
03:32They save time, but I lose horses.
03:34I didn't think of that.
03:35It was a question of property, too.
03:37Rules and regulations.
03:38I didn't make them, but I live by them.
03:40So do you.
03:41So should everybody else.
03:43Come on, let's get the fence fixed before we lose more horses.
04:06Hold still, Fury.
04:17You're the most stickless bronc I ever broke in in all my life on the range.
04:21How many wild broncs have you broken, young man?
04:24Only him.
04:25And he's not really broke yet.
04:27I'm the only one who can ride him.
04:29You must be quite a horseman.
04:31Well, Jim and Pete ride a lot better, but they can't ride Fury.
04:35He won't let them.
04:36Is that so?
04:38Is Mr. Newton around?
04:39No, sir, but he'll be back any minute.
04:41He and Pete are out getting the horses.
04:43The uranium hunters let loose.
04:45Oh, yes, of course.
04:46I heard there was a strike.
04:47Do you mind if I wait around till they get back?
04:50They're back now.
05:02Gentlemen to see you, Jim.
05:04Mr. Newton?
05:05That's me.
05:06I'm Bob Ford from the welfare department.
05:08Oh, yes, of course.
05:09Judge Blake said you were coming over.
05:11Joey take care of you, all right?
05:12He sure did.
05:13Good.
05:14You'll stay for lunch, won't you?
05:15Thank you, I will.
05:16Good.
05:17Come on along.
05:30What's the matter, Joey?
05:31Aren't you hungry?
05:32No, sir.
05:40Fury's calling me.
05:41May I be excused?
05:42Mm-hmm.
05:49Poor kid.
05:51How they all lose their appetites when I show up.
05:54But it'll come back all right as soon as he finds out that I didn't come here just to make trouble for him.
05:58Well, I'm glad to hear that myself.
06:00You had me a little bit worried.
06:01Well, contrary to popular belief, we welfare workers are not horned devils.
06:06This is just a routine checkup.
06:08We make them periodically on all custody cases to see how the boys are adjusting themselves to their new environments.
06:13Oh, well, if that's all there is to it, then you can write off this case as of now.
06:18Joey's doing fine.
06:19I hope he can stay here for good.
06:21Does that settle it?
06:22Well, not quite.
06:25You see, the decision of the department as to extending your guardianship for another year will depend pretty well on my report.
06:31And for that, I'll have to ask a lot of pretty nosy questions.
06:34Fire.
06:35Well, first of all, let's get one thing settled.
06:37Why can neither of you ride Fury?
06:44Well, the funny thing is that we can't.
06:46I bet Fury's thrown Pete and me 10 times apiece.
06:49Well, how do you account for that?
06:51Well, I tell you, I reckon Fury's never heard of your welfare department.
06:55He just took it on himself to adopt Joey permanent-like.
06:58And I don't want to be around when anybody tries to bust him loose.
07:02I wouldn't either.
07:06Why do these welfare workers always have to come snooping around?
07:09Always checking up on people.
07:11I think I done something wrong.
07:30Hey, nobody's supposed to be in the bunkhouse.
07:33Fury?
07:46Hey, what are you doing?
07:48You're stealing something.
07:50No, honest, I'm not.
07:51You are, too.
07:52What'd you get?
07:53Nothing, I tell you.
07:55I know you.
07:56You're the uranium hunter's kid.
07:58How come you're still around here?
08:00My dad went down to a pond to get some water for the radiator.
08:03The rattlesnake bit him.
08:04Gee, that's bad.
08:06Where is he now?
08:08We camped in a shack over in those hills.
08:11I know the place.
08:12Dad did what he could for himself.
08:14But when I woke up this morning, he was real bad.
08:16He's getting worse and worse.
08:18And I came over here looking for help.
08:20Come on, I'll take you to Jim.
08:21He'll know what to do.
08:22No, not him.
08:23He'll probably have me arrested.
08:25You wouldn't say that if you knew, Jim.
08:26Come on!
08:27No, please.
08:28My dad's dying.
08:29Why don't you lend me a horse, and I'll ride for a doctor?
08:32I got no right lending horses to strangers.
08:35Then you go get a doctor.
08:37OK.
08:38But first, I'll take you to your dad.
08:40Let's hurry.
08:41Where are the horses?
08:42We'll ride double.
08:43And Maya will cure it.
08:44Come on.
09:15It's worse.
09:18It wasn't like this when I left.
09:21He doesn't even know we're here.
09:23Gee, he needs help real bad.
09:29He's dying.
09:31I'd better hurry and get the doctor.
09:33Wait.
09:34Won't you need some money?
09:36I'll tell Doc Fulmer it's an emergency.
09:40Maybe he'll trust us.
09:41Well, here.
09:42Take this anyway.
09:45$20?
09:46It's from what I took back there, from the pair of pants.
09:51Pete's money.
09:52And you told me you didn't take anything.
09:56You see why I had to take it.
09:59Well, I guess a fellow might do most anything
10:02to keep his father from dying.
10:05I guess a fellow might do most anything
10:07to keep his father from dying.
10:09Anyway, I don't think Pete will mind.
10:11When he finds out what the money was for, I'll be right back.
10:35Come on.
10:36Come on.
10:37Come on.
10:38Come on.

11:07Doc Fulmer.
11:15Dear Doc Fulmer, please come quick.
11:35Your's, very, truly, Joey Newton.
12:01Hello, Joey.
12:02Where's the fire?
12:03What's the best thing for a rattlesnake bite?
12:04Doctor, I reckon.
12:05Doc Fulmer's out.
12:06But I left a note for him.
12:08Yeah?
12:09When did it happen?
12:10Last night.
12:11He's awful sick.
12:12It's pretty late for medicine.
12:13But if he ain't dead yet, this will keep him going until the doctor gets there.
12:17Now, look.
12:18You have him swallow two of these every hour.
12:21Thanks.
12:22Here's your money.
12:23And I'll telephone and locate Doc Fulmer for you.
12:26Hey!
12:27Hey!
12:28You're forgetting your change.
12:32And that's the way it's been ever since.
12:35Joey's a great kid.
12:37Sounds wonderful.
12:39Now I have just one more official bit of business.
12:42I'd like to check his room.
12:43Oh, that'll be a pleasure.
12:45It couldn't be neater.
12:46Come on along.
12:54See?
12:55And it's always this way.
12:56I make Joey really toe the mark about keeping things in order.
13:27Well?
13:29Is it past inspection?
13:32Well, I'd like it better if there was a shirt or a shoe that wasn't just so.
13:36Like a boy's room should be.
13:38Well, you mean it's, uh, it's too neat?
13:41Well, it's a little like an institution.
13:43You know, a boy who feels completely at home must slip up once in a while,
13:46leave something out of order.
13:48I ought to know.
13:49I've got two of my own.
13:53Well, maybe I have been pouring it on him a little bit.
13:56Jim!
13:57Oh, Jim!
13:59What's wrong, Pete?
14:00I've been robbed.
14:01I was just down at the bunkhouse.
14:03My layout's all messed up, clothes chucked around,
14:05and then money missing from this pants.
14:07How much?
14:08$20 bill.
14:09Well, maybe you misplaced it.
14:11Well, I don't keep my diggings as neat as Joey does,
14:13but I don't hang my pants on the floor like a found this.
14:16None of the hands back from the range?
14:17Ain't been a soul around all morning.
14:19Did you ask Joey if he'd seen anyone?
14:21He ain't here.
14:22He's rode off on Fury.
14:24Joey was here all alone when I arrived.
14:26Are you suggesting that Joey took that money?
14:28He wouldn't do that.
14:30I certainly hope you're right.
14:32I know I am.
14:33I'd bet this ranch on it.
14:52Where's the doctor?
14:53He was out, but he'll be here.
14:55I got some medicine at the drugstore.
14:57This'll help him.
14:58Get some water.
15:06Getting kind of late.
15:07Past time for Joey to feed the stock.
15:09Pete'd like him to miss that.
15:12Didn't Joey ever give you and Jim anything
15:14to worry about before?
15:15Sure, but nothing like this.
15:17Them times, he was a good man.
15:20Them times, he always seemed to get himself in a fix
15:23trying to get people out of trouble.
15:25Maybe it's the same way this time.
15:28Well, I've called all Joey's friends.
15:30None of them have seen him.
15:31Don't you think we'd better get saddled up
15:33and start hunting for him?
15:34No, no hurry.
15:35I have a hunch he'll be showing up here any minute.
15:37If he does, are you going to ask him about the money?
15:39No, not a word.
15:40And I don't want anyone else to either.
15:43If Joey knows anything about that money,
15:45he'll tell me himself without being asked.
15:47That's the way it's always been between us,
15:48and I'm not going to change it now.
16:09The medicine's done him some good.
16:11He can sit up.
16:15Dad!
16:17Come on, get him back to bed, Joey.
16:19Get him some more medicine.
16:20Yeah, but he sure weighs a lot.
16:32He isn't breathing very much.
16:35I'd better get Jim.
16:36The doctor may be too late.
16:38Please, Joey, don't leave me.
16:40Gee, Larry, Fury could get him.
16:44Fury?
16:45But he's only a horse.
16:46Sometimes that horse acts like he went to school.
16:49You watch!
16:53Fury, I want you to do something real important.
16:56Go back to the ranch and bring Jim here.
16:58You understand?
16:59Bring Jim here.
17:00Come here.
17:11Hello?
17:17Yes, this is Jim Newton.
17:19I've been waiting here all afternoon for Joey
17:21to come back for his change.
17:22His change?
17:24Yeah, $20 bill.
17:26Say, anybody out your place get bit by a rattlesnake?
17:29What no not here why I see he didn't say where he was going
17:38All right, well, thanks, mr. Jessup people pick up the money goodbye
17:46Joey had the money. All right, but it was for somebody else
17:50He tried to get doc Fulmer and then he bought some snake like remedy at the drugstore
17:54Are you telling me Joey really had my $20 bill? Well, it looks like it, but I'd still bet that he didn't take it
18:00I'll take half your bet anytime. Let's saddle up and go looking for him. I'd like to go along if you don't mind
18:05Glad to have you. I hope you've got a kind-hearted and tolerant horse. I'll get my boots and Levi's
18:13What about that welfare fella he's a smoothie can he get Joey took away from here
18:20Nobody's gonna take Joey away from me. Not without an act of Congress

22:19All right, Jim, oh doc what's happening
22:22Well, Joey here did a sort of Paul Revere's ride to get me so as I could treat. Mr
22:27Marsh for a rattlesnake bike. He wanted to pay the $18
22:32You want to tell me about the money Joey
22:34Do I have to even if I pay it back out of my allowance paying it back doesn't all of the fact that the money
22:40Was stolen
22:41Even if it was only borrowed are you admitting that you actually took the money?
22:48Answer me
22:51Please mr. Newton I can't let Joey take the blame. He didn't steal the money. I did
22:57He didn't even know I had it until we got here and that's when you borrowed it to get help from. Mr
23:02Marsh, yes, sir, and Larry only took it to get a doctor now gentlemen
23:06Let me tell you something whether the money was borrowed or stolen

23:14Joey
23:16Thanks for backing me up all the way along the line
23:19Well, let's get back to the ranch. I don't think Pete's gonna want to bring any charges charges

23:30Well, thanks Jim for your hospitality and your cooperation I'll be running now
23:34Well, not without at least a hint of what's on that report. I hope don't worry about that. You came through a hundred percent. I
23:41Came through you don't think I ever had any doubts about Joey. Do you know my only worry was you whether you had the necessary?
