William Branham claimed that he was "God's Voice" to the people. As adherents to Branham's Manifest Sons of God doctrine, his followers willingly accepted him as an authority both existing scripture and newly invented scripture through his "Spoken Word”, which was recorded and sold through members of his campaign team. Branham was the prototype for others, such as Jim Jones, who through the same doctrines claimed to have "Spoken Word".

According to Branham, when his “Angel of the Lord moves down, it becomes a Voice of God to you.” This, he said, was not his own commandment; Branham claimed that even his statement saying that he was “God’s voice” came from God. So who could deny it?

When William Branham’s son, Joseph Branham, began his transition to become the central figure of the “Message” cult, Joe tried to re-establish and reaffirm this doctrine. According to Joe, William Branham — not Jesus or the Bible — was the “absolute”. And every word Branham said — which happens to be sold at his Voice of God headquarters — is “thus saith the Lord”.
