EVACUATION RESUMES

Improved weather conditions on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022 allowed rescuers to resume evacuation efforts and search for possible victims after Mount Semeru, the highest volcano in Lumajang district east of Java province, erupted, triggered by monsoon rains. The volcano spewed thick columns of ash more than 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet) into the sky on Sunday, Dec. 4, 202, blanketing villages and nearby towns with falling ash that blocked the sun. No casualties have been reported.
