00:00 The ICJ is known as the World Court, right?
00:02 So states go head to head there.
00:03 And Ukraine has brought this case, as you said, back in 2017.
00:07 But they've been haggling over whether this court has jurisdiction.
00:10 That has lasted till now.
00:11 Now we're finally getting to the meat of the case.
00:14 Now, two treaties have been violated, according to Ukraine.
00:17 One is the Treaty on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
00:21 That's about the elimination of Ukrainian language education in Crimea.
00:26 And also the Mejlis, a parliament representing the Tatar minority in Crimea.
00:33 That was disbanded.
00:34 And they say that is violating that treaty.
00:36 But most of all, it is about financing terrorism.
00:39 As you said, there are Russia backed groups operating in eastern Ukraine.
00:44 That's what Ukraine alleges.
00:45 And of course, the main thing that they're trying to get accountability for
00:48 is the shooting down of MH17.
00:50 That's, of course, that airliner that was shot out of the sky in July 2014,
00:55 killing all 298 people on board.
00:58 There has been a court case about that here in the Netherlands.
01:00 Four people were found guilty and implicitly,
01:04 the court even said that Russia was responsible.
01:06 But Ukraine has been trying to get responsibility
01:08 accounted for in the international stage for this for a very long time.
01:12 And you have to see this ICJ case in that context.
01:15 Now, today, we're going to hear from Ukraine.
01:17 Then on Thursday, Russia gets its turn.
01:19 And then next week, we have two more court dates and then the court will deliberate.
01:23 Now, the ICJ is not a fast moving vehicle.
01:25 This is likely to take months.
01:27 But I spoke to someone, they said they are hoping to get a result
01:30 before the end of the year.
