00:00 Good morning Rio Grande Valley coming to you live right now from Yuccas, La Jolla.
00:10 Questions comments feel free to go ahead and chime in on there during the demo process.
00:15 I'm going to go ahead and let the floor come to Ms. Elizondo as she demonstrates the long
00:22 hair haircut today.
00:23 Hi everybody.
00:24 My name is Ms. Elizondo and I am actually going to...
00:31 Alright I think we lost connection so let me go ahead and restart again.
00:35 My name is Ms. Elizondo and we're going to be doing a quick demo on a very simple haircut.
00:39 It's a long layer haircut.
00:40 It allows the client to keep most of their length if they want it.
00:44 It allows the client to keep their weight but also have a lot of movement where they
00:47 can style it flat iron, blow dry or a curly.
00:50 It is a five step process, very simple.
00:53 Our model here has allowed us to cut a little more than the one inch so we are cutting about
01:00 maybe three inches and then we're going to go ahead and start doing it.
01:03 So make sure you prep up every client that you have by doing a shampoo, cleansing the
01:09 hair and preparing it by combing it at natural fall.
01:12 Natural fall is actually where the hair falls naturally.
01:16 It's just very simple that if we comb the hair opposite of where it's going it will
01:24 do it a different direction so it will actually not allow it to shave or style gracefully.
01:32 So we're going to go ahead and how do we know where the natural fall is at?
01:35 You just kind of shake the hair a little bit and see where the hair falls naturally and
01:40 that's where we start cleaning it up.
01:42 Our haircut which is a long layer and it has a square edge will start very simple.
01:48 Now before we start let's go ahead and make sure that everybody is connected, invite all
01:52 your friends.
01:53 Like I said everybody is welcome to join us, get a little heads up of what we do here in
01:58 Yuccas La Jolla and make sure that you hashtag after sharing and liking our post that you
02:03 hashtag beautify.
02:05 So we have here our model, we have prepared her with a proper shampoo for cleansing.
02:12 We have gone to where the highest point of the head is which is also known as the apex
02:17 and how do we determine that is by placing our comb where it lays completely flat and
02:21 parallel to the floor.
02:22 That is where our section is which at this moment is right here.
02:26 Every client, every canvas that sits on your chair actually has a different apex.
02:31 They might have a little bit more forward, a little bit more backward.
02:35 So just make sure that allows you to understand where the hair flow goes, if it's going to
02:40 go down, sideways or forward.
02:42 So we have determined that her apex is about maybe 3.5 inches away from her perimeter area
02:48 in the front.
02:49 That and then we will subsection where it comes down from the apex to just in the middle
02:56 right a little bit slightly off the middle of the ear.
03:00 So we are going to go ahead and stop there.
03:02 That allows me to have a lot of movement and prevent any gaps from this area where we have
03:07 no hair.
03:08 Okay, so that's going to give me ample weight on that.
03:12 Now it tells us right here, long layer step number 1A and long layer step number 1B.
03:21 We are going to utilize and create, I know that a lot of times we understand that when
03:26 you do the haircut first and then you style the perimeter area, I'm going to ask everybody
03:31 to step outside the box and start with the perimeter area designing the haircut.
03:36 And the way I like to do it and it simplifies things is always stand behind your section.
03:41 You're going to comb straight down and you're going to take the length that's desired.
03:46 At this time, like I said, we were going to take a little bit more than 3 inches and I
03:50 always start in the middle, straight.
03:53 Make sure that if you're standing behind, there should be no reason for the angles of
03:57 the hair to go different.
03:58 If you're standing behind, comb it straight and just cut straight across, cutting the length.
04:05 Now you can either move to the right or to the left and that gives you a lot less room
04:10 for mistakes.
04:11 So, again, I am not combing the hair towards the middle because that is not a natural fall
04:16 and it will distort how the hair will flow.
04:19 I will go in with a natural fall and take my sections to where I am just cutting past
04:26 my second knuckle to make sure that I have consistency and a systematic way of cutting
04:33 hair.
04:34 I am not cutting past my second knuckle and I am moving with my section.
04:41 This is what we know as a traveling guide.
04:43 We travel with it, making sure that we have a straight line or what we know as a zero
04:49 degree cut.
04:50 Once I have done this, I will move to the opposite side and do the same thing.
04:55 I am cutting not past my second knuckle, going straight ahead.
05:02 Now make sure that you invite everybody in.
05:04 Make sure that you tell your friends that this is going on.
05:07 Tag them on our post and make sure that you hashtag beautify on this haircut.
05:14 Andrea, Esther, Amanda, Linda, thank you for joining us at this time.
05:19 So, once again, if you do have any questions, feel free to go ahead and ask Ms. Elizondo
05:24 so we can go ahead and get clarification on today's demo of the long layered cut that
05:29 is being done here at Yucas La Jolla.
05:31 Yes, ladies, welcome.
05:32 Thank you for joining us.
05:33 Now I have designed the back part of it.
05:36 Remember that the back part of it holds the most amount of hair.
05:39 So we have created that weight line.
05:42 When we are going to do the front, which is step number 1B, the shoulder is usually on
05:50 our way.
05:51 And if we don't get the shoulder out of the way, we create a little bit of lifting.
05:55 We don't want that.
05:56 So just a little tip for people that are doing haircuts out there, move their hair to the
06:00 side, get that shoulder out of the way.
06:03 And again, at natural fall, I am not doing the over direction of the hair.
06:08 I am doing a natural fall, getting that shoulder out of the way and utilizing.
06:12 And if you make sure that your fingers are parallel to the floor.
06:16 Don't cut past your second knuckle.
06:19 Hi Lorena, thanks for joining us today.
06:22 Hi Lorena.
06:24 Thank you for joining us.
06:25 Welcome.
06:26 And we will be doing the same exact technique on the opposite side.
06:30 I will move my head opposite so that I clear the shoulder.
06:34 And again, I am not over directing the hair back or forward.
06:38 I am coming straight at a natural fall.
06:41 Hi Leila.
06:42 Hi Monica.
06:43 Thanks for joining us.
06:44 Hi Lorena.
06:45 Thanks for joining us again as well.
06:46 And once again, folks, if you are watching this, definitely go ahead and share our video.
06:51 Do #Beautify.
06:53 Also, our first of 100 live viewers.
06:55 Once again, if you do the hashtag and share, you will be entered into a drawing for a free service here in our salon as far as cut style.
07:06 Alright, so we are done with our perimeter area.
07:11 We have created what is called a square length.
07:15 That is a zero degree haircut.
07:17 And that is what is going to give it the most amount of bulk weight and movement on the bottom part of it.
07:22 Step number two is going to be taking a section from the apex to the front of about half an inch.
07:30 We will take about half an inch straight across.
07:33 And that is just to make sure that we determine our perimeter or our guideline.
07:40 What I am going to do is this will determine how short my layers will be.
07:45 And you comb it straight up.
07:48 Straight up.
07:50 Now, on our consultation with our client, we determined that we were going to make sure that her layers ended up more or less around her collarbone.
07:59 So this is how much I will be cutting based on the consultation that we did with her.
08:04 Every time that we do a client, we should at all times do a consultation and make sure that both clients and stylists understand and are speaking exactly the same language.
08:14 So that there is no miscommunication and we always exceed customers' expectations.
08:20 So at this time, this is about how much I am going to be cutting.
08:23 And I am going to cut straight parallel to the ceiling.
08:27 Again, never cut past your second knuckle.
08:30 Go straight up.
08:32 If there is short hair like her that she has fringed, don't worry about it.
08:36 It will drop.
08:38 That means that we are maintaining that length.
08:40 So I have determined that this is going to be, and if we look at it, as soon as I drop it, it comes down to where her collarbone is at.
08:48 This area right here, anywhere from the cranial ridge and the flat of the head up, this is where all the movement happens.
08:55 This is where you design.
08:57 This is where you carve in any movement that you want.
09:00 Any textured movement that you are excited to have the client have a look at.
09:06 So by determining that, we know that this is going to allow me to have volume, movement.
09:12 Once I have determined that, then our step 2B is still on the flat of the head on the top, but we will get about 2 inches of a rectangle.
09:22 How is it, well, how am I supposed to get a ruler or something?
09:26 Make sure that you can utilize your thumb.
09:29 This is about an inch.
09:31 And inch from the middle, inch to the back.
09:35 So we get our 2 inches.
09:37 Straight across to the back.
09:39 What is this going to do for us?
09:41 Remember, the top part of it is going to be our movement, our texture, our volume.
09:48 And this is the section, and if you want to get a close up, Erin.
09:55 This is the section that I'm working on.
09:57 Tilt your head a little bit.
09:59 This is the section that I'm going to be working on.
10:01 This is where the most volume, movement, texture, everything is going to be happening.
10:06 Now on this section, as you look at my board, it's going to be moving forward.
10:11 And it's going to end up with a square cut.
10:13 That means if she would for any reason be standing head and heels up, she will have a straight cut right here.
10:23 But remember, the curvature of the head entitles you to have a straight line, but when it drops, it will be.
10:30 You will notice that my guide is right there.
10:33 My fingers are parallel to the teely, and I will cut across.
10:39 Whoever is joining us, thank you.
10:41 Make sure that you share this post and hashtag on the comments, beautify.
10:46 Ask me any questions that I can answer for you at this moment, I'm more than happy to do.
10:54 Okay, so I am cutting straight across.
10:56 I am not over-directing the hair back or forward, it's coming straight up.
11:02 Right there.
11:04 I'm going to cut straight across.
11:07 I drop this.
11:10 I don't see it.
11:12 Thank you.
11:14 Alright, so half and half subsections, and I get a slight piece from my previous one just to be working with the same guidelines.
11:25 So if you look at it, I can see that was the guideline that I created right in the middle.
11:29 I'm coming straight up.
11:32 Again, I am not over-directing.
11:34 Now, one of the questions that I usually get asked is, "Is this a 90?"
11:38 Not necessarily, because the curvature of the head means that a 90 I would have to pull with the curve.
11:44 And what I'm doing here is just pulling straight up and creating that block.
11:50 You will see once we start.
11:54 Alright, we do apologize for the disconnection and the buffering.
11:59 Sometimes the weather does that for our networks, but we're back on and we're continuing here.
12:07 I'm doing exactly the same thing.
12:09 I'm coming forward.
12:11 I'm going to be cutting.
12:12 Why do I get a half and half subsection?
12:15 That gives me the security that I will always be getting the hair straight up and not over-direction.
12:24 And the last part of it is actually the fringe area.
12:29 And then I just go back and verify that there is no long hairs, which at this case we do have some.
12:35 So we have--basically, you have done about 75% of the hard work right now,
12:41 which is determining your perimeter area, determining the texture that you want,
12:45 and how much volume and movement that you're going to determine, how short of it.
12:50 And step 3A is going to be very--
12:56 Okay, so we have done that.
12:58 We have done step 1A and B, step 2A and B, and now we're going to go ahead and start with step 3A.
13:05 Now, remember, we have systems the way we teach our students how to do a hair cut,
13:11 and our systems actually guarantees our students to be able to replicate the cut every single time.
13:17 Our systems are determining the length, getting their stationary guide, their apex,
13:23 and now it has become a little bit more easier because now what I'm going to do is connect point A to point B.
13:31 Okay, depending on the length of the client that we're working with, it'll be the angle that we have.
13:37 Because you have haircuts that need to be--even though they're short,
13:41 they need to be connected to the length without having lines of demarcation.
13:45 So our long layer tells us that once we establish that--why?
13:50 Because that actually explains why sometimes your hair flips out one way and in the other,
13:56 because we have cut it differently.
13:57 So what we're going to do here with our lovely model is going to start our back connection to it,
14:05 but make sure that you guys comment here #beautify and share.
14:10 Once we have that, we have--okay, so now we are going to connect.
14:20 I always work from my apex. This is where most of the movement happens.
14:24 So right here I will get just about half an inch of a section.
14:30 Again, I only grab about half an inch of a section because that gives me a lot more control.
14:36 I'm going to comb straight up.
14:40 If you look at my board over here, it shows you how it's combing straight up without having to round up the head.
14:50 So I have my section. Make sure you clean it.
14:54 And I will start from the center to the ends so that I can have that nice flip naturally,
14:59 even when she doesn't blow dry or flat iron her hair.
15:03 But look at it. This is my guideline right there,
15:08 and I want to make sure that I respect her length, which is right there.
15:12 So I am respecting her length.
15:15 Right here I have my guide from my apex area, which is right there.
15:22 I will do an angle to maintain weight.
15:26 What kind of an angle am I going to do depends on the length.
15:29 On her, it's going to be just a slight angle so that I can connect the layers from the top.
15:36 I can come up and cut straight across,
15:39 or I can go under and just do closing on my shears slightly as I slide up.
15:47 So the only part of it that I close is about a centimeter, and I am sliding my hand with it.
15:53 That allows me to connect my shortest layer to my longest without having any lines of demarcation.
16:00 I always start in my center for control.
16:03 And then I'm going to move either to my left or to my right, whichever one is easier for you.
16:07 But make sure that if you're cutting from the center to the ends,
16:11 you do exactly the same thing all around your head.
16:14 That way you have the same flow and movement from it.
16:18 So we're going to move with that.
16:20 While I do that, ladies and anybody who's joining us, gentlemen, make sure that you share our post.
16:28 You comment #Beautify for a chance to win a free haircut with a style
16:33 here at the University of Colorado, College of Arts and Sciences in La Jolla.
16:37 Again, I have my guide area right there, and I'm going to cut straight up.
16:47 What I do is with my elbow. I am not tiptoeing with my elbow.
16:52 I just get that angle that I need.
16:57 Cutting it, you notice that some of the hair is falling off to the bottom.
17:01 That's because we are respecting and maintaining her length.
17:06 And if you start looking at it, you start seeing the flow of the layers connected all the way with weight at the back.
17:14 Because a lot of times when we have a client with very thin hair,
17:19 if we cut too many layers, that thin ends on the perimeter at the bottom will end up being a little bit thinner than normal.
17:29 So right here, I'm coming down to right behind the ear.
17:33 This is my section, my guide, and this is my length.
17:37 So I'm going to go ahead and just do the same angle that I'm doing,
17:43 which is about a 45, but we're doing it upside down.
17:48 Any questions so far, ladies?
17:51 Anybody out there have any questions with regards to today's demo cut of the long layer?
17:57 Please go ahead and feel free to chime in.
18:00 And now I have done my right side. I will do my left side.
18:05 If you are doing a haircut, make sure that the moisture on the hair is exactly the same.
18:12 We have to remember that when hair is wet, it stretches almost double its size.
18:17 When hair is dry, it stretches very about half its size.
18:21 So you don't want to have dry spots. You don't want to have wet spots.
18:25 So if you're going to do a dry cut, do it all dry.
18:27 If you're going to do a wet cut, make sure that the moisture keeps consistent
18:31 so that the stretching of the hair is exactly the same.
18:35 Again, even if I comb it straight down, you will not be able to notice where the layers are at.
18:40 You're going to see that there's layers once I move on to the hair and I see the layers.
18:46 But because of the way that we're using that angle and blending,
18:50 we are going to be able to notice that the haircut is just flowing.
18:54 You can see where the layers start, but you don't know when they're ending.
18:58 They just flow naturally together.
19:01 So I'm going to do my left side.
19:04 Some sections of about half an inch.
19:07 And again, I started on the apex, worked my way down to the ends.
19:11 And that's the way I'm going to go all around the head.
19:14 On haircuts, ladies and gentlemen, basically it is very...
19:19 Every haircut that we do on a person is completely different because they all have a different head shape.
19:25 You have to be aware of the head shape that you're working with
19:29 and also the hair texture that you're working with
19:32 because when they go home, they have to be able to replicate the look that you've done in the salon.
19:37 A lot of times they ask you, "Can I take you home with me?"
19:41 because they have a hard time replicating the look and they love the way you leave their hair.
19:46 Well, when we do it properly and we teach our clients,
19:49 it is part of our training here to teach and educate our clients
19:53 how to replicate the look so that every day they look completely groomed.
