00:00 more or less speak to our reporter Karis Garland standing by in Ancy. Hello to
00:03 Karis. Understandably the day after this attack a lot of unanswered questions,
00:08 some shock, some anger, some grief. Tell us more about the mood where you are.
00:14 Well the atmosphere here, we're actually standing in the playground where the
00:20 attack took place and it's fair to say the atmosphere is very heavy, very
00:25 somber. You might be able to see behind me a lot of people have actually come
00:29 to to lay flowers, soft toys and balloons in honor of the victims. I think the
00:37 overpowering mood here is just shock and incomprehension. I spoke to some people
00:43 earlier who, well there was a grandmother and a mother of a 22 month old child,
00:48 the same age as one of the victims, so obviously I think it was very easy for
00:54 them to put themselves in the shoes of the families of the victims here, very
00:58 visibly upset, visibly moved. I spoke to another man who says he's from Ancy, he
01:04 knows this park very well, he says he comes here with his grandchild very
01:08 often. This is where his grandchild learned to play and he said you know it
01:13 broke down in tears saying this could very well have been my own my own
01:17 grandchild. So I think it's a very somber mood here today and we've also got a
01:21 very significant, well a fairly significant police presence obviously
01:25 ahead of Emmanuel Macron's arrival. He will be arriving here in Ancy after, as
01:30 you say, visiting victims in Grenoble. And Karis, given that mood there, a lot of
01:37 anger, a lot of people wanting justice and wanting to know more specifically
01:41 about what happened. What have we learned a day after this attack? Yeah actually I
01:49 mean some of those conversations I had with residents here did understandably
01:54 go off into how could this have happened, what are the motives behind it. Of course
01:59 we don't know a lot at this stage. As you say the investigation is still
02:03 ongoing. We know that the police custody of the suspect has been extended. That's
02:09 after no, he did not talk overnight, he didn't give the police any
02:14 information. He was due to have a psychological exam this morning, Friday
02:20 morning. We do know however that the the attack took place and he wasn't under
02:25 the influence of any alcohol or drugs. As you say the prosecutor said that
02:31 there's no, at this stage, of the apparent terrorist motive. We know that the
02:36 suspect arrived in France last October and requested asylum here in France in
02:43 November. We also know that that request was denied just five days ago. That's
02:48 because he already had refugee status in Sweden. The Interior Minister said that
02:53 his refusal for asylum in France was a disturbing coincidence. Obviously we
03:00 don't know more on that. We know that politicians have reacted expressing
03:05 their condolences for victims. But also this has reignited debate about
03:10 immigration in France and in Europe. We'll have to see where those debates
03:14 take us in the weeks and days to come. And of course we did see a small protest
03:21 of extremists last night here. All right Carice, thank you very much. Carice Garland
03:25 reporting from Annecy.
