00:00 Prince George is all grown up
00:04 On Friday, Prince William and Kate Middleton released a new photo of their oldest child
00:08 ahead of his 10th birthday, which falls on July 22.
00:12 And the young royal looks just like his dad in the new snap.
00:16 The photo was taken at Windsor Castle earlier this month by Millie Pilkington and shows
00:21 the future King of England looking relaxed as he sits on stairs while resting his arms
00:25 on his legs.
00:27 In the snap, George rocks a blue and white striped shirt, blue pants and brown suede
00:31 shoes.
00:32 But it's his ear-to-ear smile that steals the show.
00:38 Prince George is Kate and William's oldest child.
00:41 They also share 9-year-old Princess Charlotte and 5-year-old Prince Louis.
00:45 It's tradition for the Prince and Princess of Wales to release a photo of their child
00:49 ahead of their birthdays.
00:51 When they were younger, the portraits gave royal fans an opportunity to see the kids
00:55 grow up.
00:56 But George has been attending more royal outings with his parents as of late.
01:01 DailyMail.com's Turley Langston chatted with Access Hollywood about Prince George, giving
01:06 some insight on his personality and how he is already embracing his future as the King
01:11 of England.
01:12 "George does know that he's going to be the future king.
01:16 Now obviously the older he gets, the better his understanding of what that really means
01:22 becomes.
01:23 However, he was told for the first time around his seventh birthday.
01:28 William and Kate are understood to have sat him down for a fairly frank conversation.
01:33 Now at seven years old, you're not really going to be able to understand the weight
01:37 and responsibility that you're facing as a future monarch.
01:41 But they did explain to him that his role as a future king means that he will live a
01:46 life of service and duty.
01:48 They explained to him how important the role is to the British people and the fact that
01:54 it is one that is really about giving back to the public.
01:59 And from what we understand, he's grasping that more and more every day.
02:04 And I think you've seen it in his public appearances.
02:06 He's really relaxed into the different official engagements that he's been doing.
02:12 When we saw him in his official role at King Charles's coronation, for example, he looked
02:17 confident.
02:18 He knew exactly what he was doing.
02:20 And even though he was the youngest person to take on an official role during that ceremony,
02:26 he mastered it.
02:27 He did it with such confidence and grace.
02:30 And I think that that's a really wonderful indication of how he's going to be as he really
02:35 matures into the role of future king.
02:38 We've been seeing George out and about quite a bit lately.
02:40 Is that a deliberate choice and why?
02:42 It is a deliberate choice on the part of William and Kate, but it's also a natural one.
02:48 As any parent out there knows, the older your child gets, the more mature they get, the
02:54 more opportunity you give them to kind of hang out with the adults, as it were.
02:58 So when George was a very young boy, they didn't feel that it was fair to him to expect
03:03 him to attend all of these different events, to sit there calmly and politely with his
03:08 hands folded in his lap.
03:10 And just like you see with George's younger brother, Louis, who doesn't get to go to all
03:14 of the same events that George and Charlotte do, it was exactly the same thing with George.
03:19 Now that he's a bit older, now that he understands more how he's supposed to behave in public
03:25 when the world's eyes are on him, William and Kate feel much more confident taking him
03:30 out and about and giving him an opportunity to kind of flex his future king legs, as it
03:35 were.
03:36 But I think they've also done it in a really masterful way.
03:40 We know that George loves sports.
03:42 So William and Kate have taken advantage of all of those wonderful public engagements
03:46 in a sporting arena in order to introduce George more to that life of kind of being
03:52 in the spotlight.
03:53 You know, he was at Wimbledon very recently.
03:55 He was at the cricket with his dad.
03:58 He's been to many a football or soccer game.
04:00 And those are things that he really enjoys and also places where he feels as though he
04:05 can relax.
04:06 We've seen him kind of cheering and screaming and rooting for his favorite team.
04:10 And that's a really great indication to the public of how William and Kate are balancing
04:16 allowing him to be a normal boy, but also slowly introducing him to what it really means
04:22 to be a public-facing member of the royal family.
04:25 That's great.
04:26 And what kind of child is George?
04:27 You touched on his interests.
04:28 We see how he's been embracing them.
04:30 But how would you describe his personality?
04:33 I think it's best described by someone who actually spent time with him at a private
04:37 club in London who said that he is much more cautious than his two siblings.
04:44 Charlotte and Louis tend to be the more boisterous siblings who rush forward, who make energetic,
04:49 excited, you know, kind of gestures and all of that kind of stuff.
04:53 Now, that's not to say that George is shy.
04:55 I think that that's a wrong image that has been painted of him.
05:00 I think he's more reserved than Charlotte and Louis.
05:03 I think that he tends to be a little bit more thoughtful than the two of them.
05:09 And that will be a combination of two things.
05:11 A, his natural personality.
05:13 We can't all be boisterous, extroverted people.
05:16 But also because he does have more responsibility on his shoulders, both as the oldest sibling,
05:24 but also as the future monarch.
05:26 And you saw that dynamic with William and Harry.
05:28 You know, Harry garnered this reputation for being the loud, crazy joker, while William
05:33 was always the more reserved one.
05:35 Yes, that had to do with their differing personalities.
05:38 But behind the scenes, we know that William's a joker.
05:41 He knows how to have a good time.
05:42 The same can be said of George.
05:44 When he's in a relaxed, private environment, he's known for being very cheeky.
05:48 He's known for being a little bit mischievous.
05:50 And he's known for kind of really having a great, boisterous time when he's away from
05:55 prying eyes.
05:56 And I think that's a lesson that he's kind of learned more and more over the years.
06:01 And that's why he's kind of got this image of being reserved and, you know, a little
06:06 bit scared of the cameras.
06:07 That's not the case.
06:08 It's just that he knows that when he's in public, he has to act a certain way.
06:13 And he can't necessarily run around scrapping with the other kids because he's a future
06:18 king.
06:19 That's a great point.
06:20 Now, in what ways would you say he takes after William?
06:22 And which ways does he take after Kate?
06:24 I think he takes after William in his stoicism.
06:28 You know, when he's in public, he's very much the kind of calm, collected leader of his
06:34 siblings.
06:35 Now, interestingly, Charlotte has really formed a reputation for herself as being the one
06:40 who's kind of telling off her brothers.
06:41 You know, she's always the one saying to Louis, "Don't you do that.
06:44 Don't you make those faces."
06:46 But both of George's siblings take guidance from him on how to behave in public.
06:52 They look to him as being a leader in a very quiet but very reassuring way.
06:58 We also know that George is intensely protective over both Charlotte and Louis, which I think
07:04 is something that William exhibited with Harry when they were younger.
07:08 Now, as far as Kate is concerned, George has absolutely taken after her incredible athleticism.
07:16 We know that he has formed an incredible fondness for so many different sports.
07:21 And that's really something that he's learned from his mother.
07:24 Kate is an incredible athlete.
07:26 We've seen her master all kinds of different sports over the years.
07:29 You know, she's played tennis with Federer.
07:30 She's been sailing.
07:32 Whenever she and William compete against one another, she is always the one who comes out
07:36 on top.
07:37 And I think George is very much the same as his mother in that regard.
07:52 (upbeat music)
